<h4>Why the Bills Will Win</h4>
Josh Allen has thrown for exactly 4,000 yards through 14 games, with 30 touchdown passes against nine interceptions. He also has run for 383 yards and eight more scores. Devin Singletary and Zack Moss have combined for 1,060 rushing yards and five touchdowns, but it’s the passing game that has taken off for the Bills this year. Stefon Diggs has 111 catches for 1,314 yards, and Cole Beasley is just 50 receiving yards from joining Diggs in the 1,000-yard club for 2020.

The defense has also taken off in Buffalo since the first third of the season. Jordan Poyer is the team’s leading tackler with 117 total tackles (85 solo). Mario Addison, A.J. Klein and Jerry Hughes have combined for 14 ½ sacks. The Bills have covered in six games in a row overall, but have only covered once in their last six AFC East contests. Interestingly, the road team has covered in 21 of the last 31 meetings between the Bills and the Patriots, showing the close nature of the rivalry (as well as the Patriots’ recent dominance in Buffalo).
<h4>Why the Patriots Will Win</h4>
The Patriots have picked up some surprising wins this season, most recently with a 45-0 shellacking of the Los Angeles Chargers three weeks ago. However, teams have figured out the limitations of the New England offense, as Cam Newton has only 2,381 passing yards and a dreadful 5:10 TD:INT ratio. Jarrett Stidham has come on in limited action but has not been able to pry away the starting job. Damien Harris and Sony Michel have combined for 995 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and Newton has contributed with 489 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground, but the Pats have not been able to get offensive traction consistently.

On defense, J.C. Jackson has been a beast in the secondary, snagging eight interceptions. Chase Winovich and Adam Butler have combined for 6 ½ sacks. Adrian Phillips leads the team with 101 total tackles (70 solo). The Patriots have covered four in a row as a home underdog. If you like the Patriots here, you see Bill Belichick pulling more coaching wizardry out of his bag.
<h4>The Final Word</h4>
The Bills have overcome challenge after challenge since an early two-game losing streak to Tennessee and Kansas City, and their combination of offense and defense make them a tough stop for anyone. I see the Patriots keeping this close before Buffalo pulls away late.

MNF Betting Odds & Pick: Buffalo Bills vs New England Patriots

Liberty and Coastal Carolina were supposed to play back on December 6. The game was canceled because of COVID issues with Liberty. We were instead treated to maybe the single best college football game of the season between Coastal Carolina and BYU.

Liberty and Coastal now meet a few weeks later in the Cure Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Coastal Carolina is -7 with a total of 59.5 at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a>. This line opened lower than 5 and peaked as high as 7.5, but has since fallen back down onto 7 with varying juice. The Chanticleers were unable to play last week’s game against Louisiana because of COVID concerns, so there is some uncertainty as to whether or not all hands will be on deck.

Let’s take a look at this one and handicap the two sides of the coin.
<h3><strong><u>Liberty</u></strong><strong><u> Flames</u></strong></h3>
Liberty had an excellent regular season. The team’s lone loss came against NC State, but the Flames did cover the number as a four-point underdog in the one-point loss. Hugh Freeze has certainly proven his coaching chops again with the Flames, who have scored 39.4 points per game. The only time they were held under 30 was that loss to NC State.

Liberty has outscored the opposition by nearly 19 points per game, but it is important to put into context the schedule that the Flames played. They did beat Virginia Tech and Syracuse on the road, but their other wins are Western Kentucky, FIU, UL Monroe, Southern Miss, Western Carolina, and UMass.

While that strength of schedule is certainly questionable at best, it is worth noting that Liberty played to or exceeded expectations based on the betting odds in nearly every game. They outgained the opposition 6.72 to 5.00 in yards per play over the course of the season. That is dominance.

Malik Willis missed a game with COVID, but the Auburn transfer was sensational this season. He posted a 20/4 TD/INT ratio while completing 64% of his passes. He also led the team with 807 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. This is a Liberty team that had 18 plays of 40 or more yards and 10 plays of 50 or more yards. They moved it in chunks and Willis was the leader of a dynamic offense that wants to achieve the same things that Coastal Carolina does.

<h3><strong><u>Coastal Carolina Chanticleers</u></strong></h3>
A big key to the success for each of these teams has been the ability to play keep away. Liberty possessed the ball for 33:10 on average. Coastal Carolina possessed the ball for 34:15 on average. For the Chanticleers, that ranked fifth nationally and first among teams to play 10 or more games, of which there weren’t many. For frame of reference, Army was second on the list of teams with 10 or more games in that regard.

Grayson McCall took excellent care of the football with a 23/2 TD/INT ratio during the season. He also completed 69.3% of his passes as a redshirt freshman out of Indian Trail, NC. The Coastal offense under the guidance of head coach Jamey Chadwell uses a ton of pre-snap motion to get defenders confused and moving and likes to run a lot of misdirection. It helped running back CJ Marable to 844 yards on 162 carries in the regular season with 12 rushing scores. McCall had six rushing scores of his own.

It also doesn’t hurt that Coastal Carolina is +21 in sack margin. They put the opponents behind the chains and they stay ahead of them, so they have been able to do an excellent job getting third-and-shorts while forcing opponents into third-and-longs. Not surprisingly, the Chants rank fourth in the nation in third down conversion rate.

Liberty ranks 13th, though, so this will be a game predicated on early-down success and how likely these teams are to convert those third-down chances to stay on the field. Liberty ranks 13th defensively as well, while Coastal Carolina is 38th, but Liberty’s strength of schedule ranks 140th per Jeff Sagarin. Coastal Carolina ranks 106th.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
The first time these two teams were supposed to play, the line was in the 4 or 4.5 range and then started getting bet up when Liberty was reported to have COVID issues. It eventually got all the way to double digits before the game was called up. This line does give Coastal the benefit of the doubt with the win over BYU and also likely factors in how Liberty hasn’t played since November 28.

On the other hand, these two teams are strikingly similar. They both control the ball. Both have mobile quarterbacks, though Willis is a better runner than McCall, while the CCU product is the better passer. They are well-coached teams.

Add it all up and seven looks like a few too many points.

The final UFC event of 2020 is cause for celebration. What Dana White has achieved this year with the top mixed martial arts promotion on the planet has been nothing short of remarkable. White and UFC officials found a way to make it all work with no fans and with fight cards just about every weekend.

With that being said, quite a few veterans are on the main card for UFC on ESPN+ 41 at the UFC Apex. Also known as UFC Vegas 17 or UFC Fight Night 183, the main event will feature Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson against Geoff Neal. The card also includes Jose Aldo, Marlon Vera, Marlon Moraes, Rob Font, and Anthony Pettis among other experienced fighters.

<h4><strong><u>Carlton</u></strong><strong><u> Minus (+260) vs. Rick Glenn (-310); Total: 2.5 (-225/185)</u></strong></h4>
Carlton Minus is actually a Plus here as the underdog for his lightweight fight against Rick Glenn. Glenn has not fought since November 30, 2018, so it has been a longtime since we’ve seen the once UFC regular in the cage. He fought three times in 2017 and twice in 2018 before this recent long layoff. Even with the long hiatus, Glenn is more than a $3 favorite against Minus, who lost his UFC debut on August 22 with a very uncompetitive showing against Matthew Semelsberger. Glenn should win, but who wants to lay that price?
<h4><strong><u>Cody Durden (+133) vs. Jimmy Flick (-153); Total: 1.5 (-130/100)</u></strong></h4>
The original date for Cody Durden vs. Jimmy Flick was a couple of weeks ago, but Durden had pink eye and couldn’t fight. The line is roughly about the same at this point. Durden fought to a draw in his UFC debut back on August 1 as a big underdog. Flick got a contract from a September DWCS performance. Flick’s ground game looks strong and Durden looked to be more of an upright fighter in the draw against Chris Gutierrez. Flick should get this one to the ground and get a tapout. You could take Flick by submission to cut down on the modest vig here.
<h4><strong><u>Jamie Pickett (+245) vs. Tafon Nchukwi (-285); Total: 1.5 (-115/-115)</u></strong></h4>
Cameroon native Tafon Nchukwi knocked out Al Matvao back on September 8 and that was enough to get him a UFC contract to take on Jamie Pickett. These are two knockout artists, as Pickett has nine career KO/TKO finishes and all four of Nchukwi’s fights have ended in that manner. Pickett, a two-time fighter on the DWCS, has never been knocked out in 15 professional fights. We’ll see if that streak comes to an end here. Based on the side and total for this fight, that seems like the most likely outcome. Pickett is the biggest fighter with more reach. The underdog might not be a bad option here in a fight likely to end quickly and violently.
<h4><strong><u>Aiemann Zahabi (+165) vs. Drako Rodriguez (-190); Total: 2.5 (-225/185)</u></strong></h4>
Remember Aiemann Zahabi? Frankly, you probably don’t. The 33-year-old Canadian debuted with a win over Reginaldo Vieira on February 19, 2017. It was Vieira’s last pro MMA fight. After that, Zahabi lost to Ricardo Ramos nine months later and then Vince Morales 18 months later. He’ll take on Drako Rodriguez here, one of many DWCS finds on the undercard. Rodriguez forced a submission of Mana Martinez back on September 8 to get his shot. The KOTC veteran lost to Tony Gravely in 2018 for his only career loss. Gravely is a veteran fighter and a full-time member of UFC now. That’s not bad. In other words, Rodriguez is probably underpriced here at -190 and this might be the best bet on the card.
<h4><strong><u>Deron Winn (+138) vs. Antonio Arroyo (-158); Total: 2.5 (-125/-105)</u></strong></h4>
When it comes to size mismatches, you won’t see many like this. Antonio Arroyo stands 6-foot-3 and Deron Winn is 5-foot-6. this will be a catchweight bout at 195 pounds with Arroyo a clear favorite. Winn beat 6-foot-1 Eric Spicely in his first UFC fight, but then lost to Darren Stewart and Gerald Meerschaert following a big step up in class. Arroyo is a step back down towards Winn’s level. This is only the second fight under contract for Arroyo, who was on DWCS twice and then lost to Andre Muniz back on November 16, 2019. Winn, while the shorter fighter that will have a tougher time getting inside, might be more of a live dog than people realize.
<h4><strong><u>Dalcha Lungiambula (+215) vs. Karl Roberson (-255); Total: 1.5 (-145/115)</u></strong></h4>
Karl Roberson and Dalcha Lungiambula were supposed to fight last week at UFC 256, but Roberson popped a positive COVID-19 test. The fight will now take place on this card. Roberson remains a big favorite, as bettors and oddsmakers seem unconcerned about any effects from the virus. One would think that it could hurt the cardio a bit, but this fight isn’t projected to go all that long anyway.
<h4><strong><u>Pannie Kianzad (+132) vs. Sijara Eubanks (-152); Total: 2.5 (-415/315)</u></strong></h4>
Could this be the last UFC fight for Sijara Eubanks? The 35-year-old is just 7-5 in her career with only two knockout wins. After starting out well in UFC, she’s lost three of her last five. Every UFC fight has gone to a decision. She’s just not an exciting fighter and the promotion is making lots of cuts. Pannie Kianzad has won two in a row since losing her first contract fight to Julia Avila. It would be wrong to say that this is a torch-passing fight, as Kianzad s a veteran of 19 fights to Eubanks’s 12, but she is the bigger fighter and the one trending up at 29. The underdog looks set up for success here.
<h4><strong><u>Alex </u></strong><strong><u>Morono (+195) vs. Anthony Pettis (-230); Total: 2.5 (-215/175)</u></strong></h4>
This is a weird matchup for Anthony Pettis. After fighting the likes of Donald Cerrone, Nate Diaz, and Stephen Thompson over his last four fights, he now faces Alex Morono. Morono had a nice win over Rhys McKee back on November 14, but he did go 15 minutes and doesn’t really seem like the type of fighter that would get matched up with Pettis. On the other hand, the 33-year-old Pettis needs a win pretty badly. Beating Cerrone is almost ceremonial at this point. Pettis should get it, but I can’t help but wonder if his UFC days are numbered.

<h4><strong><u>Marcin Tybura (-102) vs. Greg Hardy (-118)</u></strong></h4>
No total was posted at time of writing for this heavyweight fight between Marcin Tybura and Greg Hardy. Tybura is 3-0 in 2020 after a really tough 2019. He’s gone the full 15 in each of his last three fights and seems to have really matured as a fighter with a different approach to his fights. Tybura turned 35 back on November 9, but he’s found a second wind to his career and his veteran knowhow could be tough for Greg Hardy.

Hardy lost to Alexander Volkov last November. His wins have predominantly been against fighters with a similar experience level that he can bully and push around. Tybura isn’t that kind of guy. Stylistically, this looks like a bad matchup for Hardy against a patient fighter willing to bide his time. This looks a lot like the Volkov fight on the surface. The main difference is that Tybura isn’t 6-foot-7, but he also has a better submission game.

<h4><strong><u>Gillian Robertson (-110) vs. Taila Santos (-110); Total: 2.5 (-165/135)</u></strong></h4>
Gillian Robertson and Taila Santos have had to be flexible recently. Robertson was originally set to fight Andrea Lee last week, but that fight was canceled. Santos was fighting Montana De La Rosa two weeks ago, but a positive test from MDLR’s camp put that fight on hold. Now the two will fight each other.

Robertson beat Poliana Botelho back on October 17 for her fourth win in five fights. Since joining UFC, she’s really taken everything up a level and her only loss came against super-prospect Maycee Barber. Santos has also had quite a bit of success. Her only loss came a couple fights ago against Mara Romero Borella by controversial split decision. She beat Molly McCann back in July for her first fight in 17 months. To be honest, this fight is really close to call, but the -165 on over 2.5 seems light. Santos has never been finished and Robertson has gone deep into the third in her last two.
<h4><strong>Pick: Over 2.5</strong></h4>
<h4><strong><u>Rob Font (+130) vs. Marlon Moraes (-150); Total: 2.5 (-130/100)</u></strong></h4>
Rob Font hasn’t fought in over a year. The situation was similar last December, as Font went 358 days between fights. He beat Ricky Simon by unanimous decision. This will be his first fight since December 7, 2019 when he steps into the cage with Marlon Moraes. Moraes’s lone appearance in 2020 was a bad one, as Cory Sandhagen knocked him out on October 10.

The 32-year-old Moraes has struggled lately. He lost to flyweight turned bantamweight Henry Cejudo last June. Then he won a narrow split decision over Jose Aldo before the Sandhagen TKO. Font isn’t the most active of UFC fighters, but when he does get in the cage, he is a constant aggressor. In the smaller UFC Apex cage, Moraes may have issues with the length and the forward push of Font. This is a fight that looks ripe for an upset.
<h4><strong>Pick: Rob Font</strong></h4>
<h4><strong><u>Khaos Williams (+112) vs. Michel Pereira (-132); Total: 1.5 (-125/-105)</u></strong></h4>
This is probably the most interesting line of the card. Khaos Williams has two very, very impressive knockouts in 2020 over Alex Morono and Abdul Razak Alhassan. The optics and the hype would suggest that Williams is the play at plus money. Pereira has also lost two of his last three fights. The 27-year-old is 2-2 in the UFC, but really hasn’t faced anybody with the power of Williams.

This will be a really exciting fight, however long it lasts. The line would imply that Pereira is the right side, but I have a hard time convincing myself of that. It is worth noting that Williams did take a big jump to the UFC and Pereira is a different kind of matchup for him. Maybe the easier thing to do here is expect a quick finish.
<h4><strong>Pick: Under 1.5</strong></h4>
<h4><strong><u>Marlon Vera (+123) vs. Jose Aldo (-143); Total: 2.5 (-215/175)</u></strong></h4>
Jose Aldo needs a win to stop the bleeding. His most recent fight was a loss to Petr Yan for the vacant bantamweight title. That marked three losses in a row for Aldo, who was on at the top of the UFC mountain. He’ll take on Marlon Vera in this fight, a fight that was set up a little over a month ago.

Vera beat Sean O’Malley last time out, but O’Malley suffered an injury early in the fight was badly hampered by it. While that win buys some recognition, Vera really needs this win over Aldo, a fighter who seems to be on a downward trajectory. The price seems a little bit optimistic here on Aldo to return to form. It’s entirely possible that the abuse of his last three losses has simply taken a toll.
<h4><strong>Pick: Marlon Vera</strong></h4>
<h4><strong><u>Stephen Thompson (-101) vs. Geoff Neal (-119); Total: 4.5 (110/-140)</u></strong></h4>
This is a huge opportunity for Geoff Neal. The 30-year-old has seven wins in a row after his XKO loss to Kevin Holland and we’ve all seen where Holland’s career has gone since. Neal hasn’t fought since he knocked out Mike Perry back on December 14 because of some health scares. In fact, things got so tight financially for Neal that he had to go back to his waiter gig to make some money. You won’t find a fighter more motivated for an opportunity like this one.

Wonderboy Thompson should be plenty motivated, too. This is his first fight since November 2 of last year when he beat Vicente Luque to stop a two-fight losing streak. Thompson, now 37, is not the fighter or striker that he used to be. It’s a big reason why Neal is the favorite here in this fight and why he should be victorious in this bout.

For the Chargers, the first meeting with the Raiders was gut-wrenching, as they thought they had scored a touchdown on the game's final play, only to see it overturned. The result was a 31-26 defeat, one of five in which they were beaten by five points or less. That game, which was played on November 8, represented a 300-plus-yard effort by rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who has 25 TD passes on the year.

The consensus is that head coach Anthony Lynn is going to be fired at season's end. Some of what's happened has been out of his control, but he has been cited for blowing things in the end game. But if there is something important that has been salvaged out of this wretched campaign, it's that the Bolts have a quarterback they know they can go forward with.

The original thought about Herbert was that he was going to sit for a while as Tyrod Taylor kept the seat warm. That didn't last long; Taylor was dislodged by a punctured lung that happened as a result of a botched medical procedure. So you might say that in the development of Herbert, the team is ahead of schedule.

Herbert has had one attempt shy of 500 in just twelve games, and part of the reason for that involves injuries in the backfield. But one of the good signs is that Austin Ekeler is back and productive. He had 146 yards from scrimmage in last week's win over Atlanta - 79 rushing and 67 receiving. So more balance is quite possible.

So who's charged (pardon the pun) with stopping Herbert and Ekeler?

It seems there is enough of a problem with the Raider defense that Jon Gruden fired Paul Guenther as coordinator. Admittedly there have been a couple of experiences that have been embarrassing. In last week's 44-27 loss to the Colts, Indy had 456 yards, and ran over Silver and Black, with 6.8 yards a carry. The winless Jets had 206 rushing yards the week before, requiring the Raiders to get very lucky at the end.

Rod Marinelli has been named as the interim coordinator. He's been this team's defensive line coach, and was a coordinator in Dallas and Chicago, and worked under Gruden at Tampa Bay. BetOnline patrons may remember that he was also head coach of the Detroit Lions' 0-16 team in 2008.

Said Gruden: "We need somebody who has a different perspective, a different approach.” I found that interesting, as it implies that Marinelli and Guenther may not have been on the same page. It is also interesting that this "new approach" doesn't have much of a chance to take hold, with this four-day turnaround.

Currently Las Vegas is 26th in the league in yards allowed per drive and 28th in the red zone. They have allowed 4.7 yards per carry and 7.1 yards per pass. So we're not all that confident in their ability to keep Herbert "short," as he's been in his last three outings (5.15 yards per attempt).

Some of the Bolts' metrics don't resemble that which you may expect from a 4-9 team. They are seventh in that "yards per drive allowed" category. They have also forced punts on 40% of drives (third best) and three-and-outs 22.3% of the time (6th).

And while we could have gotten another laydown from them, after the 45-0 loss to New England the week before, they fought until the end against Atlanta, winning 20-17 at the gun, albeit after an interception of Matt Ryan with 30 seconds left.

This may also be worth noting - the Raiders have covered only nine of 29 games in the 2nd halves of seasons going back to 2017. Inasmuch as Las Vegas' "home field advantage" doesn't mean too much to us - heck, the owner won;t even show up for home games - we think the more judicious play here is to take the points with the CHARGERS.

The PNC Championship is probably a golf tournament that you had no idea was being played this week. It is a family affair, literally, at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Grande Lakes in Orlando, Florida.

It seems fitting that a family tournament would take place in a city like Orlando, but this is not at all like a trip to Disney. This will be a fun, lighthearted event, but 36 holes worth of bragging rights and a little bit of prize money is on the line.

The younger John Daly will start his collegiate career at Arkansas in 2021 and his old man can still hit a few shots and shorten the course off the tee. At +1000, the Daly family isn’t a bad bet to make. Some sources, including Golf Channel, had Little John as the 25th-best incoming freshman in the country.

<strong>Tom Lehman &amp; His Son, Thomas – </strong>Tom Lehman still swings it pretty good and his son Thomas played college golf at Cal Poly. It runs in the family with the Lehmans. Bernhard Langer’s success in this event shows that you don’t necessarily have to hit it a mile to win. This is a dangerous team at +1600.

You have to take the Langers at +750. Bernhard has won this event too many times and his son is a quality player in his own right.

The Johns of the Daly family at +1000 have to be another look. Those are the two teams I would look to play on, but it’s not like you need to make big bets on this. It’s a fun event and a fun tournament and should make for great viewing.

The UAB Blazers and the Marshall Thundering Herd have overcome a lot this college football season. Like so many teams around the country, long pauses because of COVID-19 have made for a disjointed season.

When all was said and done for the regular season, Marshall played eight games and went 7-1. UAB also played eight games and went 5-3, but just 2-6 against the spread. Only one of UAB’s losses came in conference play, so the Blazers wound up with a spot in Huntington, WV to take on Marshall in Friday night’s conference title game.

According to <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a>, Marshall is -4.5 with a total of 43.5 on the Conference USA Championship Game.

The Blazers did not play a game from October 31 to December 12. That final showing for the regular season was a 21-16 victory over Rice, as UAB failed to cover the touchdown spread. It did mark the return of quarterback Tyler Johnston, who is a far superior option over Bryson Lucero. That was Johnston’s fourth game of the season. He was rusty, going 9-of-18 for 217 yards, but he did throw a couple TD passes and took care of the football.

Johnston was only sacked once over four games and only threw one interception. Lucero threw eight interceptions and was sacked twice over his seven games. UAB protects the passer as well as anybody, but that still wasn’t enough for Lucero to take care of the football. All eight interceptions came in the last four games that he played.

This is a different UAB team with Johnston at the helm, but there are a lot of questions as to who will actually be available this week. Several players, including star running back Spencer Brown, missed time with COVID and did not travel with the team in that win over Rice. It is anybody’s guess who will actually return for this week’s contest, but line movement on UAB from +5.5 down to +4.5 suggests that the reports are positive.

The UAB defense has remained stout as ever. The Blazers are tied for seventh in yards per play against on defense with 4.64 and they are 12th in third down conversion rate against at 31.1%. This profiles as a low-scoring game and the defense that wins the day may end up hoisting the conference championship trophy.

<h3><strong><u>Marshall</u></strong><strong><u> Thundering Herd</u></strong></h3>
It is the Marshall defense that ranks first in the nation in yards per play allowed with 4.14. Marshall played one of the weakest FBS schedules in the nation, however. In fact, Marshall only played three teams with a winning record, one of which was Appalachian State in an impressive 16-6 win. The other two were FAU and Western Kentucky. Neither team had a good offense this season.

So there are a lot of questions about the quality of competition for Marshall. This is a team that ranks ninth in third down conversion rate on offense and ninth in third down conversion rate on defense, so the money down has been a big one for the Herd this season.

In their regular season finale against Rice, quarterback Grant Wells threw five interceptions. Wells did throw nine picks total on the season, but did so against 16 touchdowns. Marshall got good production out of him aside from that Rice game and has a matchup nightmare in tight end Xavier Gaines, who could play on Sundays next season. Marshall also ran for 4.7 yards per carry. This was a pretty efficient offense up until that last game.

Of course, the rub is that Marshall hasn’t played many defenses like this UAB unit. The inverse is also true that UAB hasn’t seen many defenses like Marshall. That’s why this is a game with such a low-scoring expectation.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
UAB money isn’t a big surprise. The Blazers had a really lofty perception in the betting markets in the early going, but Johnston’s injury led to turnover problems with Lucero and then COVID hit. The hardest part about backing UAB here is they’ve played one game since Halloween and it wasn’t the greatest of data points.

On the Marshall side, many have viewed the Herd as a regression candidate at several junctures throughout the season as a team that seemed to be overperforming relative to the stats and metrics. There are also those strength of schedule concerns, as App State wasn’t quite as good as past versions. Two of UAB’s losses are Louisiana and Miami (FL).

A little bit of equity has been lost here with the move from 5.5 to 4.5 and the low total, but UAB is still the play with Johnston back and what he means to this offense.

UAB vs. Marshall Conference USA Championship Game Pick & Preview

Our first bowl game is on Monday and it will feature the North Texas Mean Green and the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the Myrtle Beach Bowl on the teal turf of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

It is a little bit ironic that App State will play a bowl game on the same field where their hopes of returning to the Sun Belt Championship Game came to a close. In that game, App State was +3 against Coastal. In this game, App State is -21 against North Texas at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a>. The total on the game is 64.5 and has gone up a little bit since the opener of 62.

We’ll examine this one from both sides and find a play in the first of 28 bowl games.
<h3><strong><u>North Texas</u></strong><strong><u> Mean Green</u></strong></h3>
How watered down is this year’s bowl season? North Texas went 4-5, allowed over 41 points per game, and has made its way into the postseason of college football. The Mean Green went 3-6 against the spread and 6-3 to the over, with a combined 76.4 points on average in their nine games.

UNT’s wins were over Houston Baptist, MTSU, Rice, and UTEP and the most recent data point against the Miners came in a game in which North Texas was +3 in turnover margin, yet the Mean Green only won by two points. North Texas has had a rotation at quarterback with Austin Aune and Jason Bean. Aune got the start against North Texas and threw five touchdown passes on 16 completions. He only has a 54.6% completion percentage, but does have a 13/4 TD/INT ratio.

Bean is the running quarterback with a 12/4 TD/INT ratio. He’s only completed 53.2% of his passes for 880 yards, but has 43 carries for 336 yards. We should see some creativity from the UNT offense in the last hurrah for the season. The UNT offense ranks 14th in yards per play heading into bowl season.

Unfortunately, the defense ranks 113th in yards per play against with nearly 6.6. North Texas did outgain opponents on a per-play basis this season, but only had nine takeaways in nine games and finished -5 in turnover margin, even with that +3 in that last game. That means that the Mean Green defense only had five takeaways in eight games prior to the UTEP matchup.

Turnovers are what could keep this game close, as App State had 17 of those in 11 games.

This isn’t where App State wants to be. The ceiling is pretty low for Sun Belt teams in general in terms of bowl destinations, but App State is accustomed to playing for the conference title and winning it. The Mountaineers actually had two losses in conference play this season, which came against the two best teams in the conference in Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.

This hasn’t been as polished of an App State team as we are used to seeing, but the defense still ranked top 20 with fewer than five yards per play allowed and the offense still averaged more than six yards per play. The problem is that App State struggled badly against quality foes, averaging just 4.84 yards per play against teams with a winning record.

Quarterback Zac Thomas had a 19/11 TD/INT ratio during the regular season. He completed just shy of 65% of his passes, but the interceptions proved costly. Over the previous two seasons, Thomas threw 613 passes and only had 12 interceptions. He goes into this game with 11 on 275 attempts.

Whether Thomas’s struggles have had something to do with it or not, former offensive line coach turned head coach Shawn Clark relied heavily on the run game. App State had 506 carries for 2,679 and 22 rushing touchdowns with a group effort led by Camerun Peoples and Daetrich Harrington. North Texas allowed 5.45 yards per carry during the regular season, so we should see a heavy diet of the run here as well.

App State’s defense was not the problem in the team’s three losses. In fact, the Mountaineers only allowed 5.03 yards per play in losses to Marshall, Coastal Carolina, and Louisiana. The offense only mustered 4.9 yards per play.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
App State fits the bully role pretty well for the most part, though the Mountaineers failed to cover -17, -35.5, -28.5, -21.5, and -18.5 during the regular season en route to a 2-9 ATS record. They’ve usually been good in that department, but it hasn’t worked out this season.

With a quick turnaround for a bowl game, the offenses should have the most success here and the move on the over makes a lot of sense. That’ll be the official pick here, as App State has been untrustworthy as a big favorite.

On defense, Cincy, which ranks 30th in that Sack Percentage category, is going to be challenged as well.

As you probably know, Carlos Dunlap, who was one of the Bengals who was very unhappy, is not a part of the defense anymore, having been dealt off to Seattle. And the Bengals were unable to put much heat on Ben Roethlisberger the first time around, with only six "pressures" in 46 dropback situations. The result was a 333-yard day in the 36-10 Steeler victory (November 10).

As bad as the Bengals have been, they have hung in there on a lot of occasions in spite of being undermanned. In fact, during Taylor's tenure, thirteen of Cincinnati's losses have been by eight points or less.

And the second-year head coach, a former quarterback at Nebraska, does have his fans.

"He's an awesome coach," says Burrow.

But would Joe Brady be even more awesome? Burrow knows about the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator already, obviously. And Brady has, despite Carolina's 4-10 record, reportedly drawn a lot of interest from teams who are perhaps looking for the next Sean McVay.

Taylor was thought to be that guy, having been a colleague of McVay's, but many players have found him "uncommunicative," and there have been complaints about his assistants speaking with "abusive" language toward them, sometimes with racial overtones. That doesn't help when you're trying to recruit free agents. It's what has led players like Dunlap to seek greener pastures.

And let's face it - when you have a 4-24-1 head coaching record, as is the case with Taylor, you don't exactly take all the leverage in the world into an evaluation.

It is tough for us to imagine Cincy getting much offense going with Finley. So laying the points with the Steelers is probably the only way to go, although we wouldn't make a big plunge. The "team total" for the Bengals is worth exploring. At the moment the price is -115 on an "Under 13" for them, and if you have absolutely no faith in the offense, you could even get +240 that they'll score seven points or less. Consider that Cincinnati has tallied 50 points over the last five games, and that one of the touchdowns they've scored came on a kickoff return.
