(**This maybe because it was a Monday and there was no horse racing). When I walked in the place looked a lot cleaner compared to Monmouth, especially the bathroom. At the front door of the betting room, there is a sign displayed with their operating hours. This might be because of the confusion bettors had regarding closing times previously.

The lighting in the betting room suggests that they are going for more of “night-club” feel rather than a traditional sportsbook. The betting windows are located directly across from a bar and there are plenty of big screens to watch games.

In terms getting a hold of the stuff you can bet on, they have the standard daily sheets for each sport that is available to be bet on, so you can see what their opening lines were. I will dive into the lines in the next segment. The up to date lines can be seen on three large monitors on the left-hand side of the betting floor upon entry.

The issue I have with these screens though is that they are not big enough to display all games within a sport at once, so you have to wait for the screen to cycle to the next page to see the late games. However, they do supply you with those mini-sharpened pencils for you to take notes and circle off the codes of your bets. There is a food court outside by the off-track betting area, but because I was in hurry I didn’t venture to buy any snacks.

I had mentioned that I will address the betting line vig in this segment so here goes. If you want to bet on baseball, they still have on average, a 25 to 35 cent vig, which compared an online book or even William Hill in Monmouth, is quite a rip-off. One thing I did notice with baseball as well is that, their totals all fell on a half run, which suggests that this place doesn’t not like to have pushes. My Angels-Padres over bet here was for 8.5 at +105, when I knew for a fact most books were offering the total at 8. From a betting angle I guess it provides for some middle opportunities in the future.

What I did notice though was the college football week one lines that were on their sheet all were pretty much within the 10-cent vig for the point spread. My guess is they are expecting more, or enough volumes on Saturday mornings to justify their idea of lowering the vig, compared a mostly light volume weekdays in baseball. Or they think the millions of FAU and ODU alumni will come out to support their teams.

But, who I am kidding, if the college football lines are going to be fair, then this place has an advantage for me compared to Monmouth or Atlantic City since I live in New York City. A 45-minute drives sounds a lot more pleasant than a 90 minute to Monmouth or a 2 and a half hour drive Atlantic City. Speaking of Atlantic City, I did mention I will write a review on them and I will try to make a trip out there before the end of the month. Some opt outs will mean a lot more than others. Take <strong>Mike Trout</strong> for example. In a 60-game sample size, can they Angels go 35-25 without the world’s best baseball player? Sure. It’s possible. Does it lessen the likelihood that they do? Most definitely. Trout’s wife is pregnant with their first child and she isn’t the only wife or girlfriend that is pregnant around the league.

We’re not even talking necessarily about the chances of getting the virus and subsequently giving it to the baby and the significant other. We’re talking about being quarantined for 14+ days having just become a father or becoming a father for the second, third, fourth, fifth, or 25th time, in the case of Philip Rivers (whose wife is not pregnant, as far as we know).

Dabbling in hypotheticals and getting out in front of the market could make some sense in these scenarios. There is a very sound and logical case to be made that the Angels would likely struggle without their best player. As bettors, we are constantly looking for information and are thinking about ways to process it. A guy like Trout is a big name. A guy like <strong>Mike Leake</strong> really isn’t. Leake was going to be the highest-paid player on the Diamondbacks roster this season. There could have been a forced justification to let him pitch based on that. His innings in a 60-game sample size were likely to be more harmful than helpful because he just isn’t a very good pitcher and the Diamondbacks have better options.

Not to be callous or make light of a challenging decision for these players, but some opt outs, like Leake’s, are going to be addition by subtraction. Some, like <strong>Felix Hernandez</strong> of the Braves or <strong>Joe Ross</strong> and <strong>Ryan Zimmerman</strong> of the Nationals, aren’t going to really move the needle one way or the other.

<strong>David Price </strong>opted out for the Dodgers, which is a bummer given that he was poised for a solid season in a great pitcher’s ballpark away from the AL East, but the Dodgers have more than enough pitching to compensate. How much does that loss mean? To the Dodgers, probably not much. But a pitcher of Price’s caliber would mean a lot more to another team.

<strong>Bryce Harper</strong>, who already has a young child and also a pregnant wife at home, eased some concerns about his availability over the weekend with a <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/JeffSkversky/status/1279783436316741632">video</a></strong> about his thoughts and his stance on the return to play.

However, something else to keep in mind here is that players could make decisions as the season is going. A nagging injury may turn into leaving the ballclub citing health concerns. A change in a family situation, like a positive COVID test for a son or daughter, could cause a player to rethink what his choice is.

Betting any futures market is going to be especially difficult with what these leagues are trying to put together and with how many hurdles and stumbling blocks there are going to be. In so many ways, this could come down to luck, not only because of injuries and illness, but because of the inherent variance of a 60-game season.

Remember, last year’s World Series champs were 19-31 through the first 50 games. It happens. The Mariners started 13-2 and would have been very well-positioned to go on a run.
