The Dallas Cowboys, who have suffered through some attrition at the quarterback position, will be making another move in that regard on Sunday, as Garrett Gilbert appears to be the guy who is taking the reins for them.

It's a daunting task on Sunday, as the 'Boys will face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the last unbeaten team in the NFL. This one goes off at 4:25 PM ET at AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, TX.

And I was wondering whether that would have prevented him from getting injured. Go figure.

Ben DiNucci was put in a rough spot as he had to start against Philadelphia last week. And the rookie, who really needed to spend a couple of seasons just learning the ropes, wasn't really prepared to get in there. So in order to try and save the season for a team that, believe it or not, is not out of the picture in the mediocre NFC East, Dallas will hand the ball to Garrett Gilbert, son of former NFL QB Gale Gilbert, who started his career at Texas and wound up in a more wide-open offense at SMU.

This is now seven teams for Gilbert, although he has thrown only six passes in NFL games. He may have found himself a little a couple of seasons ago with Orlando in the Alliance of American Football, as he led that league in passing yards and passer rating. But for the most part, he's been a backup and/or practice squad player.

We may have been a little more comfortable with Cooper Rush (recently signed off the Giants' practice squad) getting this start. McCarthy kept offensive coordinator Kellen Moore around after he was hired, and Rush played under Moore's system, so he knows it. Naturally we don't discount that we could see him at some point.

The offensive line is once again, as it has been lately, of the patchwork variety. Rookie Terence Steele is playing right tackle, and Tyron Smith is out. Zach Martin is back, and that's good,but head coach Mike McCarthy doesn't want to move him around just to fill a hole. That might make things even worse. So yea, Gilbert will feel pressure.

Pittsburgh's sack rate is the highest in the NFL. They are the only team in the league that has held opponents under 60% completions, and they also get the other team off the field quicker than anybody (allowing average 2:29 time of possession per drive). So unless Dallas can establish a run game (with that OL, difficult), it's a long day.

<p>The Saturday MLB card features a lot of night games and some really interesting pitching matchups. One of those will be in Chicago, where Jake Odorizzi and the Houston Astros take on Lucas Giolito and the White Sox. Houston drew first blood in the series to improve to 5-0 against the Pale Hose in Friday night’s game. Will we see the same in tonight’s contest?</p>



<p>The White Sox are in the -110 range with a total of 8.5 for this one, so it looks like every bit of a coin flip in the eyes of the oddsmakers at <a href="https://www.bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/mybookie/"><strong>MyBookie Sportsbook</strong></a>. Let’s see which side has the advantage.</p>



<h2 id="h-houston-astros"><strong><u>Houston Astros</u></strong></h2>



<p>A neat and tidy 7-1 win felt like a continuation of the first half for the Astros. They scored more than enough runs to win the game and got a fine pitching performance from the starter. It was Lance McCullers that fired seven innings with 10 strikeouts against two walks in the victory.</p>



<p>Houston improved to 56-36 on the season and 43-22 against teams .500 or better. No other team in baseball has more than 37 wins in that split. The Astros were unable to widen their AL West lead, as Oakland walked off Cleveland, but every win pushes the Astros closer to a return to the postseason.</p>



<p>It is basically elementary at this point with the way that the Astros are playing. Houston has the best offense in baseball and 1.8 more fWAR than any other group of position players according to the FanGraphs calculation. Houston’s league-leading 19.1% K% has been a huge boost offensively, leading to a .339 wOBA and a 119 wRC+. Both marks lead the league by a fair margin.</p>



<p>Jake Odorizzi will hope to benefit from some of that run support. The 31-year-old has a 3.61 ERA with a 3.44 FIP in his 47.1 innings of work this season. Since returning from the IL on May 29, Odorizzi has a 2.29 ERA with a 2.84 FIP in seven starts. His first eight innings this season were rather ugly, but he’s been terrific since coming back, including just three earned runs allowed over his last five appearances. He hasn’t allowed a home run since the fourth inning of his June 9 start against Boston.</p>



<h2 id="h-chicago-white-sox"><strong><u>Chicago White Sox</u></strong></h2>



<p>The story is much different for the White Sox this season. They’ve beaten up on bad teams to be in first place in the AL Central, but have struggled when they’ve stepped up in class. The White Sox are 16-25 against teams .500 or better. That winning percentage ranks 21st in baseball. They are 38-11 against teams with losing records, but that does not help against the Astros.</p>



<p>Last night’s loss dropped the ChiSox to 31-15 at home. They are 23-21 on the road. Chicago is 18 games over .500 and 30-15 against the AL Central, so you can see exactly how they’ve built their eight-game lead in the division.</p>



<p>Injuries have played a big role offensively for the White Sox since before the season. Eloy Jimenez went down right before the regular season began. That lone loss was enough to overcome, but as the season has gone along, the White Sox have dealt with injuries to Luis Robert, Nick Madrigal, Jake Lamb, and the most recent big one is with Yasmani Grandal.</p>



<p>The White Sox are still fourth in fWAR and boast a top-five offense through it all, but they would certainly like the injury bugs to go away and bother somebody else.</p>



<p>At least the rotation has remained in tact for the most part. That includes Saturday starter Lucas Giolito, who has a 4.15 ERA with a 4.00 FIP in his 104 innings of work. Giolito was probably expected to have a better season and be talked about like the way people are talking Carlos Rodon and Lance Lynn as Cy Young contenders lined just behind Gerrit Cole. The home run has been Giolito’s bugaboo with 18 of those in 18 starts.</p>



<h2 id="h-astros-vs-white-sox-free-pick"><strong><u>Astros vs. White Sox Free Pick</u></strong></h2>



<p>Giolito probably deserves a better fate this season. His 3.58 xFIP is suggestive that his home run total should regress a little bit. He’s struck out nearly 30% of opposing batters, though having a high strikeout rate against the Astros isn’t really an advantage. Odorizzi has been throwing the ball really well lately and the White Sox lineup looks like a shell of what it should.</p>

Astros vs. White Sox Free Pick & Betting Prediction 07/17/21

<p>Major League Baseball returns on Friday night with a full slate of games. Action was supposed to return on Thursday, but the Yankees are dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak, one that includes Aaron Judge, who was just at the All-Star Game in Denver, so it will be interesting to see if any other teams are affected.</p>



<p>Let’s start with a spotlight preview for the game on the South Side of Chicago, where the White Sox and Astros fire up a weekend three-game set. We’ll see Lance McCullers for the road favorites from Houston and Dylan Cease for the home dogs from the Windy City, as the Astros are -120 at <a href="https://www.bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline/"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a> with a total of 8.5.</p>



<h2 id="h-houston-astros"><strong><u>Houston Astros</u></strong></h2>



<p>The Astros were the only team in baseball to have a full-fledged All-Star Break. While the other 29 teams sent at least one representative to the Mile High City, Houston did not. That is because the Astros that were selected for the game opted not to go. That meant extra rest for Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley, Carlos Correa, and Ryan Pressly, though Correa was recently placed on the COVID-19 IL.</p>



<p>Correa seems unlikely to be activated by tonight, so the lineup will be without him and also Alex Bregman, who is nearing a Triple-A rehab assignment. Even without those two, this is still a strong and potent lineup that ranks first in wOBA at .339. Correa is having an MVP type season, so his bat will be missed, but Houston’s low K% leads to a lot of balls in play and a lot of chances with men in scoring position.</p>



<p>The Astros turn to Lance McCullers Jr. in this one, as he takes the hill with a 2.94 ERA and a 3.64 FIP. McCullers does have an elevated walk rate this season, but has overcome that with a solid strikeout rate and a high ground ball rate to have a lot of success. McCullers has made 14 starts and worked 79.2 innings, the most for him since 2018. He missed the entire 2019 season with Tommy John surgery.</p>



<p>McCullers is on a week’s worth of rest, which is something we have to contend with coming out of the Break. Guys will not be on their normal routines, so it can be something of a guessing game to determine who will be sharp and who will not be. McCullers had allowed nine runs in five starts since June 15 after returning from the IL.</p>



<h2 id="h-chicago-white-sox"><strong><u>Chicago White Sox</u></strong></h2>



<p>If the White Sox want to be taken seriously, they’ll need to start winning games like this. Chicago is doing what the Indians did for years by beating up on bad teams at a high enough rate to win the weak AL Central Division. The White Sox go into this game at 38-11 against teams with losing records, but just 16-24 against teams .500 or better.</p>



<p>That includes a four-game sweep at the hands of the Astros, who outscored Chicago 27-8 in that series down at Minute Maid Park in June. Chicago won five in a row heading into the Break and has the third-highest win percentage in baseball, but good teams have been a problem.</p>



<p>Chicago’s offense is a M*A*S*H unit to some degree. Yasmani Grandal, Nick Madrigal, Eloy Jimenez, and Luis Robert are all sidelined. Grandal is the latest in the line of injuries as a big loss both offensively and defensively. Jimenez has started a minor league rehab assignment and will serve as a solid Trade Deadline addition for the White Sox.</p>



<p>Through it all, Chicago is third in wOBA at .332 and has provided a lot of run support for starters like Dylan Cease. Cease gets the call after Lance Lynn and Carlos Rodon both represented the White Sox at the Midsummer Classic, though Rodon did not pitch in the game. Cease has a 4.11 ERA with a 3.68 FIP in his 92 innings of work. He’s struck out 29.5% of batters faced and has walked 9.8%, his first BB% under 10% at the MLB level.</p>



<p>Cease has struggled since June 1, though, with a 5.53 ERA and a 4.15 FIP. His June 1 start was ugly, though right before the MLB memo about foreign substances. Cease has experienced decreased spin rates, but has pitched well against the bad offenses in that span. Against the Astros and Twins, though, Cease has allowed six earned runs in those starts.</p>



<h2 id="h-astros-vs-white-sox-free-pick"><strong><u>Astros vs. White Sox Free Pick</u></strong></h2>



<p>The White Sox opted to keep Cease on his regular turn, as he just pitched Sunday, so there is a chance that he will be sharper than McCullers. There is also a good chance that Cease, whose spin rates have declined of late, fails to match up with the Houston starter. The Astros offense is in better shape now without the injuries and Cease’s best weapon, the strikeout, is mitigated by Houston’s league-leading K%. It’ll be the Astros here.</p>

Three different players scored for St. Louis, with Colton Parayko leading the way with two goals.</p><p>Colton Parayko led the way for the Blues with two goals, including his third of the season at 7:27 in the second period. He also added his fifth assist on Pavel Buchnevich’s empty-netter, which was Buchnevich’s fourth goal of the year.</p> <p>After a scoreless first period, the Blues found the net three times in the second, with Jordan Kyrou contributing his third goal of the season. St. Louis took 24 shots on goal and recorded 14 giveaways.</p><p>Defensively, the Blues gave up the first goal just 5:25 into the game and another late in the 3rd period, but they held Toronto scoreless for a stretch of over 40 minutes, which allowed them to build a 3-1 lead. Jordan Binnington made 35 saves with a 94.6% save percentage, while the defense recorded 17 hits and 3 takeaways.</p><h3>Are Florida Ready for a Home Win?</h3><p>With a 4-2 win over the Stars, the Panthers improved to 20-11-2 this season. The Panthers added two more in the third period, including Greer's goal at 17:28.</p><p>After giving up two goals in the second period, the Panthers' defense shut down the Stars in the third, leading to a 4-2 victory. Spencer Knight made 23 saves with a 92% save percentage, while the defense recorded 8 takeaways and 22 hits.</p>
