The Sharks were underdogs on the puck line and the total was set at 6.5 goals, but the combined 5 goals fell short of that mark.</p> 

<p>The Sharks took a 1-0 lead early in the second period, but the Canucks responded with three unanswered goals. Colorado Avalanche vs San Jose Sharks Betting Pick & Prediction 12/19/24

NASCAR moves out of the Carolinas and into Bristol Motor Speedway for the Food City Presents the Supermarket Heroes 500 on Sunday May 31. It will be 500 laps around the .533-mile perfect oval in Thunder Valley for the first of two scheduled races at Bristol. The next race is set for September 19 during the Cup Championship Playoffs.

Chase Elliott finally got his much-deserved win on Thursday night in the Alsco Uniforms 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It was another strong night for Chevy with three finishers in the top five and they’ll hope to continue those recent trends here at NASCAR’s version of The Colosseum.

It will be very strange to see Bristol Motor Speedway empty. It ranks in the top-10 in the world in capacity, but there will not be a soul in the stands as NASCAR continues to observe the rules and regulations of government officials regarding mass gatherings and social distancing.

Once again, there will not be any qualifying or practice for the race. NASCAR has decided on a different process for setting the starting grid than what it previously used with the inverted top 20. Now NASCAR will divide the field into thirds based on points and then do a random draw. The first two rows are all Ford cars with Brad Keselowski, Aric Almirola, Joey Logano, and Ryan Blaney starting first through fourth.

The usual suspects are at the top of the betting board this week. Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliott, etc., etc. The fact of the matter is that this is Kyle Busch’s race to lose. The Busch of Joe Gibbs Racing has won this race in back-to-back years and has five career wins in this race. He is also a three-time winner of the Night Race, which is traditionally in August, but will now be pushed back into September.

Basically, this is a boom or bust race for Busch. He either wins or finishes well off the pace. He was 35th and 38th in 2017 and 2016. He was 29th in 2014 after missing the 2015 race due to injury. Other than his five wins, he has one top-five finish in this race. So, it’s his race to lose. He doesn’t always win it, but if he stays clean and in the race, he typically does. He’s a very short price at +400, but he deserves it.

JGR teammate Denny Hamlin won the Night Race at Bristol last year for the second time. He’s actually never won the spring race at Bristol. He was second on Wednesday night and already has a couple of wins this season. He’s definitely going to be a factor in Sunday’s race and the price point isn’t all that bad at +775, even though he’s the third choice.

This does seem like Toyota’s race to lose. It wasn’t Busch in 2015 or 2016, but it was Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards. Chevrolet had three wins last decade, two of them by Jimmie Johnson. Ford only had one and it was Carl Edwards. That is Ford’s only win since 2004. Ford has done better in the night race with back-to-back Joey Logano wins in 2014-15 and Kurt Busch’s 2018 win. Chevy only has one win in the night race dating back to 2004. That was Harvick in 2016.

This will be the first true short track race of 2020. Phoenix has been the shortest at just over one mile. It will be interesting to see how the drivers adjust, particularly with no practice or qualifying. Things are going to be a whole lot tighter than they have been. I would expect some crashes in this race. It is worth noting that most of the winners and top-five finishers have been some of the sport’s best drivers, so long shot prices may not be the best option here. Even though chaos is possible, the sport’s best are going to prevail in small, tight quarters.

Kurt Busch is a persistent factor at Bristol. He was the runner-up in this race last year and won Stage 2 in the night race before finishing ninth. Both Busches are worth betting this week, as you can get Kurt at +1600.

Ford hasn’t had many wins here, but has been a factor with stage wins and spots in the top five. This is a week to fade Chevy. Whatever you want to bet from a winner standpoint is up to you, but fading Chevy in some group matchups, with the exception of Chase Elliott and Kurt Busch, makes a ton of sense.

With that in mind, we’ll be looking at going against guys like Jimmie Johnson, William Byron, Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon, Tyler Reddick, and Matt Kenseth. You don’t have to be involved in Group Matchups with all of these guys, but some will be worth going against as those prices get posted market-wide.

<p>The Los Angeles Angels enjoyed an off day on Thursday before heading up to Seattle to take on the Mariners. The M’s enjoyed their Thursday as well, salvaging the series finale against the New York Yankees on the back of a strong pitching performance from Logan Gilbert.</p>



<p>They’ll hope for another good one from Marco Gonzales as this weekend set between AL West rivals gets underway. A top-five Angels offense will try to conquer the tough hitting conditions of T-Mobile Park and also give Alex Cobb some run support in one of three 10 p.m. ET start times on July 9. The Angels are a road favorite in the -125 range with a total of 8.5 at <a href="https://www.bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/jazzsports/">Jazz Sports</a>.</p>



<h2 id="h-los-angeles-angels"><strong><u>Los Angeles Angels</u></strong></h2>



<p>That was not a typo in the intro. The Angels have a top-five offense in Major League Baseball. The craziest part is that Anthony Rendon is having one of his worst seasons as a professional and Mike Trout has not played a game in about two months. Shohei Ohtani, Jared Walsh, and others have been carrying the load for Los Angeles and it is a force to be reckoned with.</p>



<p>The Angels are also the most potent team in baseball with runners in scoring position. They’ve even upped the ante by being even better offensively over the last 30 days, which is the period that encompasses most of the foreign substance crackdown.</p>



<p>The problem is that what the Angels have done defensively and on the pitching side has really cut into their offensive successes. Using the all-encompassing Def metric at FanGraphs, the Angels are the second-worst defensive team in baseball with -29.3 fielding runs. Only the Tigers are worse.</p>



<p>The Angels also went into Thursday’s off day with a bullpen that ranks just barely outside the bottom 10 in the league and a starting staff that has an ERA of 5.21. The starters have been the unfortunate casualty of the horrific team defense, as the ERA sits at 5.21, but the FIP sits at 4.26. Angels hurlers have deserved a better fate, but the fielders have let them down.</p>



<p>Alex Cobb has fallen victim to the defense a lot. Cobb has a 4.60 ERA, despite a 2.58 FIP. His LOB% sits at 57.7% and his BABIP sits at .331, even though his contact metrics look just slightly below average. Cobb has a 27.3% K%, far and away the highest of his career, which seems to be almost of out necessity with such a bad defense behind him.</p>



<h2 id="h-seattle-mariners"><strong><u>Seattle Mariners</u></strong></h2>



<p>The Mariners entered play on Thursday with the second-highest K% in baseball, so we’ll see if they can put enough balls in play off of Cobb to make the Angels defense work. Seattle has been a respectable offensive team on the road, but the poor hitting conditions of T-Mobile Park make it very difficult for an offense that tries to hit fly balls for doubles and home runs.</p>



<p>The ball just doesn’t carry well in Seattle, even with the use of a humidor. The Mariners have had the lowest wOBA and some of the worst home stats in the league just about all season long. They have the lowest batting average in baseball. Yet, the Mariners have a winning record. How could that be possible?</p>



<p>Well, Seattle has the best record in baseball in one-run games at 19-8. The Mariners also entered play on Thursday with a .271 batting average with men in scoring position and the fourth-highest wOBA in baseball in that split. They don’t get a lot of hits, but they’ve certainly made them count, running a .343 BABIP with RISP. To be fourth in wOBA with RISP, but also have the highest K% in the league is extremely hard to do.</p>



<p>Marco Gonzales has a 5.82 ERA with a 5.98 FIP in his 51 innings of work. Based on his contact quality against, he has an 8.50 xERA. Gonzales has allowed 27 barreled balls in his 10 starts, which is an obscene number. He has done that in 155 batted balls. For reference, Gonzales allowed 31 barrels in 657 batted ball events in 2019 for a career high.</p>



<p>His Hard Hit% against is 45.8% and he has allowed 13 home runs in just 51 innings. Gonzalez has had two separate stints away from the club. He came back on July 3 and allowed seven runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings the Rangers, including three home runs. He simply has not pitched well and this feels like a throwaway season with a prolonged IL stint from April 27 to June 1 and then another period away from June 20 to July 3.</p>

<p>The Angels have far and away the better offense here in this one and also have been a very potent lineup against left-handed pitching. The scariest part about the numbers for Gonzales is that he’s basically been just as awful at home as he has on the road. Righties own a .440 wOBA against him. Cobb has gotten unlucky because of the Angels defense, but he faces a lineup that strikes out a lot here and that should help his cause.</p>

The thing about Bowling Green is that they have not been able to stop the run for quite some time. Over the last three seasons, they have given up 5.6, 5.9 and 6.1 yards per carry. In the early going, that figure is 5.6 ypc, and we would hesitate to characterize that as an "improvement."

When you allow almost 3000 yard son the ground, as they did last season, there is going to be cause for alarm even under normal circumstances. But this atmosphere is potentially extraordinary. That's because they'll have Jaret Patterson staring at them from the other side of the line of scrimmage.

Patterson is not just the best back in the Mid-American Conference; he may just be on the short list of premier running backs in the country - a pre-season All-American.

Last year Patterson ran for 1799 yards and 19 touchdowns. He's cruised to 210 yards thus far in Buffalo's first two games. But even with those numbers down, don't get the wrong idea; he can shred this Falcon defense, which has been quite pliable no matter who the coach has been, or how many returnees they've had on the front seven.

And Patterson does not act alone; Buffalo truly has a two-fisted ground attack, when you consider the talents of Kevin Marks (6.4 ypc), who topped 1000 yards last season.

There is nothing wrong with Kyle Vantrease either. The junior quarterback has thrown just three interceptions in 217 attempts after taking on the starting role last season. And he hit big against Miami of Ohio, throwing for 345 yards.

Meanwhile, QB Matt McDonald, who followed first-year head coach Scot Loeffler to Bowling Green, has completed 14 of 50 passes, with a pair of interceptions. It's been ugly. Under Dino Babers, BGSU was known for its up-tempo style on offense. At BC, Loeffler's unit under Steve Adazzio was largely run-oriented. That's the direction where Bowling Green will have to go.

But Buffalo's defensive line is seventh nationally in Adjusted Line Yards allowed, if you like that kind of thing, so they are likely to get the Falcons both going and coming.

Some really big games are on the college basketball betting board for Wednesday January 6. It’s usually hard to pick a game to hone in on, but we love to try and support the mid-majors here at BangTheBook, so that’s what we’ll do with this spotlight preview.

That game is UNC Greensboro on the road at Wofford. There is some bad blood in this rivalry and these are two teams that go about their business in very different ways. Wofford is -2 with a total of 139 at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a> in this SoCon battle of powerhouse teams. This is a game that could have some big implications down the line in terms of conference tournament seeding.

Let’s take a look at this matchup and find a play for the game.
<h3><strong><u>UNC Greensboro Spartans</u></strong></h3>
A lot of teams feel pretty spiteful about how the 2019-20 college basketball season finished, but UNC Greensboro’s season was over several days before COVID-19 had a say. The Spartans lost three straight games to end the year, including a 10-point loss to underdog Chattanooga in the SoCon Tournament.

Over the course of the season, Greensboro and Wofford, who did not reach the same heights that the Terriers did in 2018 when they were under serious consideration for an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament, played two highly competitive games. Wofford won 98-92 in double overtime and Greensboro returned the favor in overtime with an 83-79 win.

The 2021 version of the Spartans have not yet shown the same offensive upside as recent teams. Despite the best commit of Wes Miller’s era in Jarrett Hensley, the Spartans only rank 299th in eFG% on offense. They are only shooting 26.3% from distance and that is a big reason why the team is off to a 5-4 start and a 0-1 record in conference games.

Hensley has barely played and didn’t even see the floor against East Tennessee State in the conference lid lifter last weekend. The Spartans are still doing well on the offensive glass, but haven’t converted those chances into points or free throw attempts often enough. Defensively, Greensboro has played very well, but they also rank 334th in free throw rate against.

The defensive numbers have also been propped up by playing really well against some bad offensive teams. Against the better team they’ve played, the Spartans have performed below their season averages, including 1.06 points per possession allowed to ETSU last game.

<h3><strong><u>Wofford Terriers</u></strong></h3>
There are red flags all over Wofford’s profile as well. Imagine a team sitting at 5-3 that is shooting 37.6% from 3 and 58.3% from 2. They are top-50 in 3P% and top-20 in 2P% and yet they’ve gone 3-3 against Division I competition. Defensively, Wofford has been a mess against D-I opposition. Richmond, Coastal Carolina, Texas A&amp;M, and Samford all scored at least 1.11 PPP. Fortunately, because of Wofford’s offensive prowess, the Terriers have been able to win a few of those games.

Somehow Wofford, a team that is shooting 46% overall from the floor, is just 56-of-96 from the free throw line. Senior leader Storm Murphy is 22-of-26, so the rest of the team is just 34-of-70. Wofford’s offensive style is predicated on shooting threes. Their 58.6% 3P Rate is the highest mark in the country, meaning that almost three-fifths of their shots are three-point attempts.

This is the second season under Jay McAuley. Mike Young moved to Virginia Tech after Wofford’s 30-win season in 2019 and he’s off to a fine start with the Hokies. McAuley, who did start his tenure without seniors Fletcher Magee and Cameron Jackson from the best Wofford team in program history, carried forward the program’s offensive style of shooting a lot of threes.

The Terriers play at a slow tempo and this looks like a game that will be played at a pretty slow rate around 66 or 67 possessions. Last season’s games required overtime, but were still only played to 86 possessions in 2OT and 76 possessions in 1OT, with the fouling that comes with close games at the end.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
So we have two really different teams. Wofford chucks a ton of 3s and has success with them. Greensboro shoots a pretty high number of triples, but does not shoot them well. UNCG is a much stouter defensive team, but they do foul a lot. The question is whether or not Wofford can make those free throw attempts.

In looking at this game, it is a tricky handicap because most of what UNCG does well, Wofford does not, and vice versa. Wofford is the team with the higher ceiling. Winning with defense in the SoCon is tricky. It is an offensive league tailored towards teams that can shoot. For now, the team that is better in those two areas is Wofford.
