The Safeway Open is an event tailored to hardcore gamblers and DFS players. The star power is gone, as most of the game’s best sit out in anticipation of the U.S. Open next week. Instead, we get a lot of younger players and guys eager to get a win in a full-field event and pick up those important things like money and entries into major tournaments.

These are higher-risk, higher-reward types of events. Even the top guys on the salary board or the odds board are inconsistent and hard to trust. This is a week in which you probably want to take some gambles. We always look down the board at some value options, but that seems especially relevant this week.

Salaries are from <a href="http://bangthebook.com/s/draftkings"><strong>DraftKings</strong> </a>as we take a look at the Safeway Open DFS value picks:

<strong>Maverick McNealy ($7,300) – </strong>This is an event that has really put an emphasis on making putts. The course is short, which means that everybody has a great chance at GIRs, whether they hit the fairways or not. The poa annua putting surface is likely to decide a winner. Maverick McNealy is a great putter. McNealy finished ninth in SG: Putting last season and actually had a couple of top-10 finishes after the restart. In a field like this, McNealy has a lot of upside, especially if the flatstick is in form. He grew a lot as a player last season, so I wouldn’t let his 52nd, 63rd, 52nd stretch at this event cloud your judgment too much.

<strong>Troy Merritt ($7,100) – </strong>Troy Merritt is a guy that looks like a pretty good fit for this course and this event. Merritt was fourth here two years ago and also finished 15th back in 2017. He, too, had a couple top-10 finishes and was a respectable 30th in The Northern Trust before bowing out of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Merritt was 41st in driving accuracy last season and 23rd in SG: Putting. While this course is short and the rough is not overly penal, Merritt can still play fairways and greens have lots of birdie looks once he gets to these tough surfaces.

<strong>Chesson Hadley ($7,000) – </strong>Chesson Hadley is probably my favorite pick this week as a value play. These are tough poa annua putting surfaces and a lot of guys really don’t like to putt on them. One of the strongest parts of Hadley’s game has been proximity to the hole. He tied for 4th with Emiliano Grillo, who is a past winner here. Hadley was also 22nd in driving accurady during the season. Hadley squandered a lot of those short putts last season, but he was 23rd here. He was third three years ago. At this price point, he is definitely worthy of consideration.

<strong>Kristoffer Ventura ($7,000) – </strong>Kristoffer Ventura looked like a different player after the restart. He finished 21st, MC, 19th, and 37th and wound up finishing fourth in SG: Putting for the season. The rest of Ventura’s game certainly needs some work, but the 25-year-old third-year pro wound up being on the plus side is SG: OTT and 11th in birdie average. Ventura was the less-heralded teammate of Viktor Hovland and Matthew Wolff at Oklahoma State, but his game is growing as well. This isn’t a bad course for him because it is a forgiving track and he’s very good with the putter.

DFS Golf Picks: The 2020-21 Safeway Open

The Safeway Open marks the beginning of the PGA Tour season. That’s right, folks. The 2020-21 season is here and we haven’t even had the U.S. Open or the Masters in 2020 yet. Like everything else, the golf world has had to change its plans, but the Safeway Open is still being held in California at the Silverado Resort and Spa.

This is the weakest field we have seen since golf returned with the Charles Schwab Challenge back on June 14. It makes sense, as the U.S. Open is next week and the FedEx Cup Playoffs just finished up in Atlanta. Oh, yeah, and this is “only” a $6.6 million purse.

In any event, it’s a golf tournament that we can handicap, so we’ll do that with the odds from <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/mybookie"><strong>MyBookie Sportsbook</strong></a> and our first full-field event in a few weeks.

There not a lot of household names in the field, but enough guys that were playing well going into the FedEx Cup Playoffs to give this event a good bit of intrigue, especially in betting and DFS circles. Odds for the full field are down below our preview:
<h3><strong><u>The Field</u></strong></h3>
The field is light on big names, that’s for sure. Guys like Jordan Spieth and Sergio Garcia are on hand in hopes of getting back on track heading into next week’s major. Phil Mickelson also returns from his Champions Tour cameo to play in his home state.

Two-time champion Brendan Steele is once again in the field and so is Kevin Tway, who won in 2018. Cameron Champ, the reigning champion, is not.

Emiliano Grillo is also a past winner here and he was playing well down the stretch of the previous season. These are the types of events where you want to look for some young guys that are emerging, like Doc Redman and Maverick McNealy. This remains the only win for Grillo and was the second win for Champ. Two of Steele’s three career wins are here. This is an event for guys that don’t have a whole lot of wins.
<h3><strong><u>Course Profile</u></strong></h3>
This is a pretty short par 72 coming in at 7,166 yards on the North Course. Historically, this hasn’t totally been a ball striker’s course like most of the ones that we have seen recently. The putter really comes into play here. The shorter distance brings a lot of players into the mix, though there was a higher emphasis on SG: Approach last season. Kyle Stanley led the field in SG: APP, but missed the cut. The next seven guys all made the cut and three finished in the top 10.

The longest par 4 on the course only plays 456 yards, so we have a chance to see some low scores on the par 4s this week. The par 3s are a little more challenging and two of the three par 5s are 16 and 18, so coming home on Sunday could be interesting.

Based on the layout of the course, driving accuracy and putting, with a lot of sloped greens, will be the key metrics this week. These are poa greens and players have complained about how rough of a ride their putts get on the way to the hole. Proximity to the hole looks to be key as well.
<h3><strong><u>Yay or Neigh?</u></strong></h3>
With our horse for course section, let’s look at some guys that have had success here. This event is happening a couple weeks earlier, so the course could play a little different, though temperatures look to be in the 60s in Napa, so that could leave some pretty normal course conditions.

As you would expect with the usual fields of this event, we don’t have a ton of consistency. Phil Mickelson missed the cut last year, but was 17th, 3rd, and 8th prior to that. Brendan Steele has the two wins in 2016 and 2017, but he has finished 60th and 53rd the last two years. Kevin Tway has a win, a MC, a 52nd, and a 62nd the last four years. That’s why he’s 200/1 as past winner.

Harold Varner III has played well here and had a pretty good end to the season after the restart. He’s finished in the top 20 in three of the last four years, including 17th and 14th the last two years.

It’s California, so you know Brandt Snedeker has played well. Sneds was the runner-up in 2019 and was 17th last year. He was also 17th in 2016 before a two-year hiatus from this event.

Troy Merritt missed the cut last year, but was 4th in 2019. He was also 15th in 2017. Similarly, Luke List missed the cut last year after finishing 4th in 2019. Martin Laird was a MC victim last year and was 46th in 2019, but he was 17th in 2018, 8th in 2017, and 3rd back in 2015.

Hunter Mahan was 17th in 2019 and 13th in 2018 but skipped last year’s event. Like I said, not a whole lot of consistency here on the whole.

This is a flawed field, but we are seeing some guys here that don’t really play here that will be interesting to say the least. Sergio basically never plays this event. He’s in pretty poor form, though. Jordan Spieth hasn’t played the last five years here. Erik Van Rooyen, who was a popular pick for some events prior to the playoffs, is also making his first start here. Shane Lowry also doesn’t play this event and he is here. Course form is up for debate most of the time anyway, but this week, it seems to matter even less.
<h3><strong><u>Stats Handicap</u></strong></h3>
We’re starting a new season, so everything gets wiped clean, but we can still look back at the 2019-20 season to see what happened. There isn’t a ton of equity in shortening the course here, but the rough is also pretty thin, so not hitting the fairway won’t hurt the big bombers all that much. Still, these are narrow fairways and the short grass is always preferable to the thicker cuts.

Harold Varner III is on the card this week. He’s played well at Silverado and was a top-10 player in SG: T2G during the last PGA Tour season with names like Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, and Scottie Scheffler around him. Varner did not putt well at all last season, but he’s had good finishes here, which would imply that he’s done well enough on the poa to be dangerous. He was also T-56th in proximity to the hole, so maybe he can make life easier on himself.

Doc Redman makes the card this week at 35/1. Redman was tied for seventh in proximity to the hole last year. He’s one of the best ball strikers in the field. The problem has been his putter and that worries me on these poa annua greens, but Redman can go flag hunting at an event like this and make life easier on himself. He was T-13th in driving accuracy during the last PGA Tour season. He was also top 40 in SG: Tee-to-Green. So long as he can sink a few putts, I like him a lot here in this weakened field.

Redman will be the shortest play for me. Without elite players in this field, this one is ripe for a long shot. Lucas Glover is an interesting player at 66/1. He really fell apart late with four missed cuts, including an exit from the playoffs in The Northern Trust, but the stats looked good for a while. I don’t think I can trust him this week after losing some money on him in matchups and outrights when he was playing better, but I think he’ll be a popular pick.

Instead, I’ll look at a couple different guys in that range. Chesson Hadley is one of them at 80/1. Hadley was 22nd in driving accuracy last season and T-4th in proximity to the hole. He struggled badly with the putter, so he didn’t take advantage of those good iron and wedge shots, but he was third here back in 2018 and 23rd last year. Maybe he likes the poa. Maybe he likes the course. Whatever the case, he fits the profile for me as a guy that can hit fairways and get close to the hole.

Two putters I’m looking at this week are Troy Merritt at 80/1 and Kristoffer Ventura at 90/1. Merritt was 23rd in SG: Putting during the season, but also 41st in driving accuracy. Ventura was fourth in SG: Putting. He isn’t the most accurate driver, but this is an event where you can be pretty average in a lot of categories but putt well and come away win some good finishes.
<h3><strong><u>Picks</u></strong></h3>
Varner, Redman, Hadley, and Merritt are the guys that make the cut as pre-tournament wagers for me.

It should come as no surprise that Georgia is favored to win. They have won the division for the last three years with relative ease. But it may be a little surprising that they are favored as much as they are with the offense practically having to get rebuilt.

Defensively, they are in great shape, but their offense is a huge question mark.

Florida, on the other hand, comes into the season with fewer question marks. With the surprising emergence of Kyle Trask at quarterback last year, the offense should be in good shape. They have some key positions to fill but have guys on the roster capable of stepping up.

Defensively, they had one of the better units in the country last year. While they did lose a few key players off that squad, they should still be in good shape for this season.

Kentucky has been an emerging program in recent years and should be an entertaining and competitive one this year. But it may be too soon to think they can win the division and earn a trip to the conference title game.

Tennessee will enter the season with a ton of buzz after finishing last year on a six-game winning streak. But they are in the tougher of the two divisions and will need a lot of guys to elevate their games to compete with Georgia and Florida.

As for South Carolina, Will Muschamp will be coaching for his job this year. With the roster he has coming back, there is a good chance he may lose it. Unless he strikes gold with a few new starters this season, it is hard to see South Carolina winning the division.

Missouri rolled the dice by hiring Eli Drinkwitz away from Appalachian State after he led them to a 12-win season last year. While he did a remarkable job with the Mountaineers, it is not easy to see him doing the same with Missouri this year. He’ll need a season or two to build the roster first.

Vanderbilt may be doomed from the start. Derek Mason had some real talent on last year’s squad but failed to get enough out of them. Unless he can get the team turned in the right direction, he may be out of a job come January as well.

So—who should you bet on?

Georgia has too many question marks to bet on them at those odds. Florida is the safe bet and, realistically, the best choice by far. It shouldn’t even be considered a two-team race; the SEC East is Florida’s to lose.

Is Bryson DeChambeau the future of golf?

I can appreciate this emergence of DeChambeau because he is a very intriguing story, and to me, creates additional interest in the game.

Of course, DeChambeau hardly came out of nowhere. He has won the NCAA title and the U.S. Amateur - in the same year - and even before he decided to re-make his physique he had achieved a world ranking of #5.

That wasn't enough. When he saw people in Vegas last year he told them he'd be looking like a different person, and boy, did he.

DeChambeau put on somewhere between 35-40 pounds of muscle, and it was purposeful, as he went from 34th on tour in driving distance to first. It really is shocking how different he looked. And one can understand that there was some skepticism on the part of other players.

They test for PED's in golf, but you can sense that not everybody is a believer. And let's face it; when you see an athlete with a "before and after" like that, it is naturally going to bring up some questions.

I'm not sure how much of that involves other players just "hating" on him. Some of them weren't believers even before this "transformation."

But I am fascinated nonetheless.

I think I'm always fascinated by people who are taking a more scientific, sophisticated approach. And you can draw a rough analogy with this and the advent of analytics in baseball, where the implementation of it gave teams like the Oakland A's edge.

As you may know, DeChambeau,a physics major at SMU, is a devotee of a book called "The Golfing Machine," written by someone named Homer Kelley, who wasn't even a pro golfer, and was treated accordingly by the so-called golf establishment when it was published back in 1969. Nonetheless, it developed a cult following.

What kind of surprises me is that although there are quite a few teaching pros who are certified by the company Kelley founded and instruct pupils on the "single-plane" golf swing, not a lot of touring pros use it. Steve Elkington, a former PGA champion, comes to mind, but the practitioners are few and far between. Generally, they don't believe. And DeChambeau was told that his approach wouldn't work on the tougher courses.

Obviously it has.

Some guys take blades of grass and toss them in the air to see which way the wind is blowing, here's a guy who's measuring things like current air density and factoring that into how far he is going to hit his shot.

And it doesn't hurt if you can massacre the ball either. DeChambeau's philosophy is that the longer you can hit it, the better chance you're going to have.

Incredibly, DeChambeau hit just 23 out of 56 fairways on the week. That's 41%, and usually that would be fatal for anyone playing a U.S. Open, let alone at a course like Winged Foot.

But it wasn't, was it?

So for his next major he'll be headed to Augusta, where it really pays to be long, and the fairways are very wide, with the rough not nearly as much of a factor as it is at other world-class courses. In other words, to the extent DeChambeau was penalized at all for errant drives at Winged Foot, he'll be penalized even less in the Masters.

So he's doing the logical thing. The scientific thing.

He's making himself even bigger. Or at least that's his intention.

He intends to arrive at Augusta National anywhere from 10-15 pounds heavier than he is right now. He will do it by gaining about a quarter-pound a day. I'm confident he'll be as precise as possible in doing that.

“I think I can get to 245,” he told reporters. “It’s going to be a lot of working out. I don’t think it’s possible – it may be, I don’t know."

I don't know either. But I think it's going to be quite an interesting story line - right up there with Tiger Woods defending his title (yeah, it's been a while, but he's the last Masters winner). Oh, and the fact that there are probably a lot of players who still don't think his bulking up is "legit" and will be rooting against him.

Yeah, I get some of that too. DeChambeau does seem to come off as a bit of an arrogant prima donna.

But a prima donna who's going to hit the ball a mile. At +1000, I'm in.
