<p>Baseball bettors get a little bit of a respite on Thursday with a smaller card than usual as teams enjoy an off day or endure a travel day to head into the weekend. One game with some division implications is the matchup between the Cleveland Indians and the Minnesota Twins.</p>



<p>Jean Carlos Mejia will give it another go for the Indians, who have run out of actual starting pitchers on the MLB, and Jose Berrios will counter for the Twins. <h2 id="h-cleveland-indians"><strong><u>Cleveland Indians</u></strong></h2>



<p>It is very easy to focus on what the Indians don’t have right now instead of what they do. This is and has been one of the top bullpens in baseball for most of the season, anchored by a strong 1-2 punch in the late innings with James Karinchak and Emmanuel Clase. That has to be viewed as a weapon for the Indians in virtually every game, especially against a team like the Twins that has a bullpen that ranks near the bottom five in both ERA and FIP.</p>



<p>The Indians have also been a pretty solid defensive team this season, which has come in handy with the lack of starters and all of the balls in play coming from the replacements. While the defensive metrics show a league average kind of unit, it sure feels like they’ve been a lot better than that, especially compared to past teams.</p>



<p>The Indians offense has been slightly better lately thanks to some weaker competition, but this is still a unit that ranks 22nd in wOBA at .299. The Indians put a lot of balls in play, but have been a major laggard in the BABIP department at .267. That is one of the lowest in baseball. It is unfortunate because the Indians are 12th in Hard Hit%, which is pretty respectable all things considered.</p>



<p>It would be great if they could unlock some of that offensive potential because they might need it with Jean Carlos Mejia on the hill. Mejia has a 6.11 ERA on the season, but has a 3.67 FIP and a 3.70 xFIP. Mejia has fallen victim to quite a bit of bad luck, as his LOB% sits at just 52.1%. He has respectable K/BB numbers, but has allowed a .294/.368/.588 slash with men in scoring position.</p>



<p>Mejia just allowed six runs on seven hits to the Pirates in his last start on June 18. He’ll be on a little bit of extra rest here, so we’ll see if that helps. He has allowed 12 runs on 16 hits in his 12.2 innings as a starter.</p>



<h2 id="h-minnesota-twins"><strong><u>Minnesota Twins</u></strong></h2>



<p>Jose Berrios is worth watching closely in this start. Berrios saw a huge spin rate decrease in his last start down in Texas. He allowed three runs on six hits with six strikeouts over six innings in that start. Berrios now has a 3.56 ERA with a 3.57 FIP on the season in his 83.1 innings of work. The right-hander has sustained last season’s strikeout increase and has cut down the walks. He has a career-worst 9.8% Barrel% on the season, so the command is still a little bit of a work in progress.</p>



<p>As mentioned above, Berrios will need to give the Twins some length, as the bullpen has been putrid this season. That has been a strength in recent seasons and Rocco Baldelli’s aggressive managing has allowed that bullpen to be an even bigger weapon. This season, Baldelli probably has nightmares about having to go to his relievers.</p>



<p>The Twins pitching staff has been a hindrance as a whole this season. Minnesota’s offense ranks second in Hard Hit% at 42.3% and went into Wednesday’s off day eighth in wOBA at .323. The Minnesota offense has not been the problem this season to say the least. The Twins have hit 107 homers, which is just off the pace set by the Giants, and they’ve set themselves up well with the bats.</p>



<p>Things in baseball do have a way of evening out and the Twins are 6-2 in their last eight one-run games after starting just 5-9 in that department. It was a big part of their early season struggles, a byproduct of both the bullpen and the starting staff’s inability to allow the team to pitch from in front. Things have stabilized, but the Twins are still a last-place team in the division.</p>



<h2 id="h-indians-vs-twins-free-pick"><strong><u>Indians vs. Twins Free Pick</u></strong></h2>



<p>This is a pretty big line for a last-place team against a second-place team, which is a pretty telling indicator of what the markets think of the Indians. Cleveland is the biggest overachiever per the alternate standings metrics, as BaseRuns lists Cleveland more like a 33-38 team. BaseRuns has the Twins at 34-39, for what it’s worth.</p>



<p>Still, this is a big number in this game. The Indians offense has been pesky and persistent and the Tribe’s bullpen is better than that of the Twins. It’s just a matter of whether or not Mejia can keep the team in the game while Berrios is out there. I think that can happen.</p>

Why do these numbers matter? Home runs don’t happen on ground balls. Home runs are typically pulled. Exit velocity allows the ball to travel farther. Launch angle helps because a 105 mph line drive with a 10-degree launch angle isn’t getting out of the ballpark. Hitters will obviously make adjustments to the batting practice format and won’t be getting breaking balls and all of the usual things from a game, but you’d still like a guy with strong swing mechanics that doesn’t need to change a whole lot in order to accommodate this contest.

There have been 3,691 home runs this season. Per Statcast, 2,129 have been pulled. There have been 3,100 that have been pulled or hit to the middle of the field. Guys that have oppo power are great and can surely put on a show like Aaron Judge did back in 2017, but it’s a hard way to go about winning a Home Run Derby.

As mentioned, lefties inherently have an edge with the lower wall in right and center. Righties will have a tougher time pulling home runs, especially on balls they get under a little bit to the big part of the park. That makes it tough for me to like most of the righties, but one I do like is Matt Chapman. Chapman isn’t as much of a pull hitter as most of the field, but he has a very high barrel rate and the highest exit velocity on fly balls and line drives. The +900 price tag isn’t bad either. He’ll be one of the two bets I make for this tournament.

The other will be Joc Pederson. He’s no Cody Bellinger, but the Los Angeles Dodger hits the ball really hard and has the highest Pull% in the field. Pederson is 14th in HR/FB% and has the 20th-lowest Oppo%. The wind could be blowing in from right, so that will help a guy that has a higher pull rate with hip rotation that will likely allow him to drive the ball into the corner of the ballpark, which is more protected from the weather conditions.

So, I’ll be looking at Chapman (+900) and Pederson (+500) as outright winners.

<strong><u>Matchups</u></strong>

<strong>Alex Bregman (+120) vs. Joc Pederson (-150)</strong>

Man, I really do love Alex Bregman, but his Pull% is down quite a bit this season. He also draws the unfortunate matchup of being a righty against a lefty in a place that does have a pretty big park factor swing. Bregman’s barrel rate is down this year and that really does concern me in an event like this where it’s all about hitting the barrel.

He put on a hell of a show last year as one of my picks, but came up short in the first round. I’d expect him to come up short here as well.

<strong>Pick: Pederson (-150)</strong>

<strong>Pete Alonso (-175) vs. Carlos Santana (+145)</strong>

Carlos Santana is one of my favorite Indians of all-time, but he’s outgunned here. Santana has always been a guy that hits a lot of ground balls to the pull side. I’m worried about his ability to elevate in this format. I’m certainly worried about it against a pure power hitter like Alonso. Alonso is a guy that I think can tire himself out in a tournament like this, which is why I don’t have him among my picks to win, even though so many metrics point in that direction.

<strong>Josh Bell (-210) vs. Ronald Acuna Jr. (+170)</strong>

If you want to discuss pure, raw power, Acuna Jr. may have the most of it in this event. He may be second to Alonso, but Acuna can really swing it and has serious power to all fields. He reminds me a lot of Manny Ramirez in that regard. The problem for me with taking the upset here is that Acuna does showcase that power to all fields. That’s not how you win the Home Run Derby. You need to make it as easy as possible by hitting to the small parts of the park.

Furthermore, Acuna is going up against a lefty in Bell. Bell also has a lot of familiarity with his good friend and batting practice pitcher Jon Schwind. Bell is the favorite for a reason.

I do think that Acuna at +170 is a little bit too big of a number, but I don’t think it’s a necessary gamble.

<strong>Pick: Bell (-210)</strong>

<strong>Matt Chapman (+110) vs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (-140)</strong>

I like the underdog here, as you would expect with my suggestion to take Chapman. This is a hard event. Mentally, it is a challenge. Physically, nobody is worried about Vlad the Impaler Jr., but mentally, it can be real tough. We know Guerrero’s raw power is substantial, but he’s always hit too many ground balls for my liking. Maybe he can flip the switch here.

I wouldn’t be terribly surprised, but I don’t think people have any idea how good of a baseball player Matt Chapman is because he’s buried in Oakland. His defense may get the accolades, but he’s a terrific hitter with a really good barrel rate for a guy that hits his share of ground balls.

As the Denver Nuggets played the Los Angeles Lakers the other night, there were factors that came into play other than just scoring a straight-up win. It appeared as if head coach Michael Malone was more concerned with not overextending some of his better players. During what would be the critical time in the ballgame, Nikola Jovic was confined to the bench, along with Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr.

But Denver (46-25 SU, 33-34-4 ATS) got some encouraging results from their other people. And <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betanysports"><strong>BetAnySports</strong> </a>patrons who followed this game know that even though the Lakers had their principal people on the floor against a number of Nuggets reserves, the outcome was not decided until Kyle Kuzma drained a triple with four-tenths of a second remaining.

Of course there's a kind of risk involved with not putting your best foot forward in these games; that is, if getting a higher seed is one of your main objectives. For example, Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers (9 PM ET, at The Arena, on ESPN) could pull them to within a half-game of the #2 seed in the West, which means that a win against the Lakers - which could conceivably have been facilitated by keeping a couple of stars out there during fourth-quarter activity - would have made this a game where a victory could pull them even.

But toward what end? There isn't a whole lot of difference that the seeds make, once you get beyond the Lakers' opening round matchup against the #8 team (which is to be determined). The second place through seventh place squads are all pretty close to each other.

And Malone's attitude right from the start was that this was not going to be a blood-and-guts battle in the seeding games, but rather a bit of a mini-camp to get them in rhythm for the playoffs.

Denver isn't fully healthy either. They have been missing Gary Harris and Will Barton, both of whom are valuable parts of their ensemble. Jerami Grant also sat out the Laker game.

One of the things the Nuggets will have to address is how poorly they have been getting out to the perimeter to defend three-pointers. The Lakers, who have been bricking in the bubble, went 14 of 29 from downtown against them. This has been a problem all along, and sometimes that is going to happen when you put big lineups out there. Quickness and the ability to move out and then back inside the arc presents a bigger challenge for this team than, say, the Houston Rockets, who aren't starting any one taller than 6-7.

You have to wonder what Malone will do with Murray, who hadn't played at all since the pandemic break but went 39 minutes against Utah on Saturday. They don't want this guy killing himself before the games that really count.

Meanwhile, we should mention that Bol Bol, who caused a sensation after his first scrimmage game, is going through a learning curve. He has played 62 minutes in his first five games, with 25 points and 14 rebounds. He was guarding Kuzma, by the way, on that game-winning three-pointer.

So we talked about Malone's attitude toward these games. You'd have to imagine that Doc Rivers has a similar mindset, because if he was more serious about winning, his Clippers (47-23 SU, 39-31 ATS) would have a firm grasp on the #2 seed and would have gone better than 3-3 in the restart. But they don't, and they haven't.

Montrezl Harrell has come back to the team after a period of mourning following the death of his grandmother. Whether he'll play a lot of minutes right away is another question entirely. Rivers wants his team healthy for the playoffs. That's been his priority. In a game like this we imagine reserves will see a lot of minutes. To a considerable degree, the guys who get the most time are those who can defend - preferably multiple positions. The second unit guys don'[t do that as well. We're gravitating toward the OVER in this one.
