<p>Both the Cardinals and Pirates will be looking to pick up a win in today's NL Central matchup, as the Cardinals are 2nd in the division with a record of 53-48, while the Pirates are 3rd at 51-50. Today's forecast in Pittsburgh calls for broken clouds and temperatures in the upper 60s.</p>

<p>First pitch from PNC Park is set for 12:35 PM ET, and MLBN will be televising this matchup. Matthew Liberatore is starting for the Cardinals, while the Pirates are going with Martin Perez. St. Louis is the slight money line favorite, and the over/under line is currently 8.5 runs.</p><h3>ST. <p>Pittsburgh wasted a good outing from Paul Skenes, as he gave up just two earned runs in 8 1/3 innings of work. Ryan Fernandez got the win for the Cardinals out of the bullpen, and Ryan Helsley got the save. Lance Lynn started for St. Louis, giving up two earned runs across five innings.</p>

<p>Nolan Arenado was the difference for the Cardinals, as he homered twice, scored three times, and finished with two RBIs. Jack Suwinski also had a two-hit game for St. Louis. As for the Pirates, their top hitter was Bryan Reynolds, who went 2/4.</p><h3>Cardinals Records & Stats</h3><p>St. Louis is 53-48 overall and trails the Brewers by five games in the NL Central. The Cardinals are 16-15 against other teams in the division and have a chance to pick up a game on the Brewers as they take on the Pirates today. So far, they are 26-22 at home and 27-26 on the road.</p>

<p>As the road favorite, the Cardinals have gone 10-6 this season, and they are 28-23 when favored overall. <p>St. Louis will be looking for Alec Burleson and Nolan Gorman to continue their strong seasons at the plate. Brendan Donovan is also a threat in the lineup, as he has gone deep nine times and is batting .269.</p><h3>Pirates Records & Stats</h3><p>Pittsburgh is 51-50 overall this season and is 7.0 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central. So far, they have gone 16-15 in divisional games. The Pirates will host the Cardinals today, and they are 25-26 at home this season.</p>

Pablo Tamba contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds, shooting 55.6% from the field.</p><p>UC Davis put on a defensive clinic, holding their opponent to just 53 points on 35% shooting from the field. The Aggies were particularly effective at defending the three-point line, where they limited their opponent to just 5 made threes on 23 attempts, a 21% success rate.</p> <p>Even though their opponent shot 46% on two-point attempts, UC Davis sent them to the free-throw line 24 times, where they converted 20 of those attempts. Long Beach State Beach vs UC Davis Aggies NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 1/11/25

Learning how to bet the ponies just might be the only way to get your gambling fill during the coronavirus outbreak. To this point, just about everything except for the horse racing circuit has shut down. It may only be a matter of time, we’ll have to wait and see, but there is no time like the present to familiarize yourself with betting on horses.

Last week, we took a look at the <a href="http://bangthebook.com/2020-rebel-stakes-betting-odds-picks-preview/691383/"><strong>Rebel Stakes</strong></a>. I opted to skirt the favorite Nadal, who essentially went gate-to-wire for the win, going off as a 4/5 favorite. It was a very impressive performance for the favorite and also for the place finisher, Excession, who started slow at the back of the back, made a huge push up the rail, and nearly had enough to take down the favorite in the muck and mud.

This week, we’ll take a look at two big races coming up down at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The first is the Fair Grounds Oaks. This is part of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks, which is a series of filly races that generally precedes the first Friday in May. Unfortunately, with the Kentucky Derby pushed back to September, the Kentucky Oaks is now the first Friday in September.

Nevertheless, we’ve got the Grade 2 TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks this week, which is a 1 1/16 mile race. Serengeti Empress, the winner of last year’s Kentucky Oaks, was the seventh filly since 2000 to win the Fair Grounds Oaks and then the Kentucky Oaks, so this one could be predictive for when we get to Churchill Downs.

This is the first race in the second leg of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks series and it looks to be a race for second place. The favorite, <strong>Finite</strong>, was listed as the 3/5 morning line favorite. Finite also drew the outermost post position, so the race to the front should be unabated.

Let’s look at the six horses in the field and put together a profile:

<strong>Antoinette – </strong>Antoinette comes in off of her first win, which came in the Tepin Stakes at Aqueduct. The daughter of Hard Spun went 1 1/16 miles in 1:38:87 for a strong time to hold off I Dare U and Quality Heat. I Dare U was actually the even money favorite in that two-year-old filly race. Antoinette stalked the pace for most of the race before sliding down at the rail to beat I Dare U over the final furlong and a half. And she just scampered to the victory in her dirt debut.

This will be her first race since then for legendary trainer Bill Mott. Interestingly, Alvarado was in the irons on Stretchthestory, who went off at 23/1 in that race. It was a patient and calculated ride from Joe Bravo. Will Alvarado take the same tact? If so, will Antoinette have the speed in a stronger race, particularly to chase down Finite?

<strong>French Rose – </strong>French Rose comes off the shelf for the first race in nine months after a couple of maiden special weight (MSW) races at Santa Anita. This seems like an odd choice for J. Keith Desormeaux to bring this filly all the way from California to run in a race where she seems to have no chance. There must be a method to the madness.

Local rider Mitch Murrill will also be the one trying to get French Rose to the board. Murrill will also ride Sonneteer for Desormeaux in the New Orleans Classic, a 4+ race that precedes the Louisiana Derby. Sonneteer would seem to have a better chance in that race than French Rose has here.

<strong>Tempers Rising – </strong>The third favorite on the board comes from the camp of Dallas Stewart. Julian Leparoux will be in the irons for this powerhouse team that has had a couple of underwhelming finishes at Fair Grounds to this point. Tempers Rising finished fourth in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes back in February and third in the Silverbulletday Stakes in January. In fact, Tempers Rising has yet to win a race.

The daughter of Bayern, who won the Breeders’ Cup Classic back in 2014, has run at 1 1/16 miles twice in her career. The distance shouldn’t be a factor for her, but she has been bested by Finite twice already, so making the board is a possibility, but winning the race does not seem to be. Her familiarity with Fair Grounds and the cohesiveness of Stewart and Leparoux could really help in the quest for second.

<strong>Bonny South – </strong>Another excellent team here as Brad Cox and Florent Geroux team up once again with Bonny South. We don’t have a whole lot of data points for Bonny South, but we have one and it was impressive. In her allowance race at Oaklawn last month, she beat Shedaresthedevil in a sprint to the finish. Shedaresthedevil just won the Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn back on March 7.

There are some additional layers to Bonny South being in this race. We could have seen Taraz in the Fair Grounds Oaks. She won the Martha Washington Stakes at Churchill Downs and the Letellier Memorial at Fair Grounds, but suffered a catastrophic injury during a workout last month and had to be euthanized. It was reported that Taraz was going to run the Honeybee Stakes and not this race, so perhaps Bonny South was built better for the distance all along.

Cox is having some tough luck of late. An injury to Mr. Monomoy, thought to be a solid Derby contender, has put him on the shelf. One other note here is that Cox is also the trainer for British Idiom, who finished second to Finite in the Rachel Alexandra. It is a different ownership group, but Cox very much knows what he is up against.

<strong>Stop Shoppin Tammy – </strong>We don’t know much about Stop Shoppin Tammy except that she is the daughter of Tapit and that she is good enough for Corey Lanerie to assume the mount. Lanerie has a full dance card on Saturday with a full day of racing, but it is rare for Lanerie to pair up with Philip Bauer.

Stop Shoppin Tammy finished fourth in her maiden at Saratoga last year before coming to Fair Grounds for a win in her maiden there in mid-February. She went gate-to-wire in that one and comes in with a little momentum here off of a terrific workout time. She is also on Lasix for the first time, so we’ll see how that goes for her.

<strong>Finite – </strong>Finite isn’t just the likely winner of this race, but she could very well win a race or two in the Grade 1s, whenever that may be. The Kentucky Oaks won’t be until September. We’ll see when the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes that precedes the Preakness and the Acorn Stakes that precedes the Belmont will be run, but Finite should be ready.

Finite won the Rachel Alexandra on this very track by nearly five lengths last month. She beat Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner British Idiom in that race and has won five straight races overall. She’s won the Golden Rod Stakes and the Rachel Alexandra at this distance, so she won’t be bothered by that. This will also be her third race at Fair Grounds along with the Silverbulletday, which she also won.

<strong>Picks</strong>

So, who do we take alongside Finite? There are only six fillies in the race, so we want to be somewhat selective after Finite in an exacta or a trifecta. The horse that I prefer for second is Bonny South. Brad Cox knows fillies. Even with Taraz, prior to her tragic passing, and British Idiom in his group, Cox pointed Bonny South to this race. Munnings is the sire of both Finite and Bonny South and it should be a Munnings 1-2 finish.

Antoinette and Tempers Rising are both of interest in exotics. Antoinette’s excellent time in the Tepin Stakes came with a really strong close. Tempers Rising is a Dallas Stewart filly and even though she hasn’t had the results, we know he’s solid with the girls. I’m still finalizing my card with regards to the exotics, but will play Finite and Bonny South together and separately.

The Thundering Herd were -8.5 favorites going into the game and covered the spread with the 12-point victory.</p> <p>Marshall led 45-35 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 36-34 in the second half. The game’s total points of 150 fell just under the O/U line of 152.5.</p><p>Marshall's offense was clicking in their last game, putting up 81 points with a 50% field goal percentage. They hit 38.5% from beyond the arc, connecting on 10 of 26 attempts, and their effective field goal percentage was 59.3%. The Thundering Herd also pulled down 17 offensive rebounds and dished out 19 assists.</p> <p>Nakavieon White led the way with 22 points, shooting 70% from the field, while Mikal Dawson added 21 points, hitting 5 threes at a 50% clip. Nate Martin was nearly perfect, shooting 6 of 7 and grabbing 13 rebounds, and Dezayne Mingo contributed 17 points and 7 assists.</p><p>Marshall's defense struggled, giving up 69 points while allowing the opposition to shoot 50% from the field. They were particularly vulnerable inside, where they conceded 60% shooting on two-point attempts.</p> <p>From beyond the arc, Marshall's defense allowed 10 threes on 26 attempts, a 38% shooting rate. They also sent the other team to the line 27 times, where they hit 17 free throws.</p><h3>Will the Dukes Make it Happen at Home?</h3><h3>James Madison Dukes Recent Game/Games</h3> <p>The Dukes fell to 7-8 on the season after an 86-66 road loss to Appalachian State on Saturday. Entering the game as +1 underdogs, they not only lost but also failed to cover the spread. The Dukes grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and shot 77.8% from the free-throw line.</p><p>James Madison's defense struggled in their last game, giving up 86 points while allowing the opposing team to shoot 53% from the field. The Dukes allowed 18 two-point baskets on 35 attempts, a 51% shooting rate.</p> <p>From beyond the arc, James Madison's defense gave up 10 threes on 17 attempts, with the opposing team shooting 58%. They also sent the other team to the free-throw line 28 times, where they made 20 free throws, shooting 71%.</p>

On the other hand, Camacho has lost four of his last five fights, including a loss 41 seconds into his fight against Justin Jaynes back in June. The 31-year-old Camacho could very well be out of the UFC soon and maybe after this fight if he doesn’t show well. There are better parlay pieces and better fights down the board to be sure.

<strong>Alan Patrick</strong> and <strong>Bobby Green</strong> look ripe for a decision with a total of 2.5 juiced at -245. Green is the -251 favorite to win the fight over Patrick, who has not fought since October 6, 2018. Green has had a really nice 2020 with wins over Clay Guida and Lando Vannata, both by decision. Each of the last seven fights for Green has gone the distance, hence the heavy over juice. Patrick hasn’t fought in so long that it probably doesn’t matter, but three of his last four have gone 15 minutes. Green by decision makes the most sense here, as you have to wonder about Patrick’s gas tank with nearly two years away at 37 years old.

Amazingly, that previous fight isn’t the most likely to go to decision among the men’s fights. It is this lightweight fight between <strong>Roosevelt Roberts</strong> and <strong>Matt Frevola</strong>. Frevola’s last three fights have gone the distance, but each of the last two for Roberts have ended in submissions with one win and one loss. Roberts is the -119 favorite and Frevola is the -101 underdog with the over 2.5 juiced up to -270. Roberts has beaten inferior competition lately and Frevola seems to be about his equal, but the early influential money has come in on Roberts. He is the longer fighter and size has mattered at the APEX, which is a smaller Octagon than the standard. He does deserve the nod, but this is not a fight I’d be excited to bet.

<strong>Julia Avila</strong> has looked good in her two UFC fights. She beat Pannie Kianzad in her debut at UFC 239 and then stunned Gina Mazany with a first-round knockout just 22 seconds in back on June 13. Here she’ll square off against <strong>Sijara Eubanks</strong>, who beat Sarah Moras by decision back on May 13. The 32-year-old Avila is -300 in this fight, which has been influenced by her most recent fight, but Eubanks is just 6-4 in her MMA career and has dropped two of three. Eubanks was supposed to fight Karol Rosa last weekend, but Rosa had issues with the weight cut. Avila’s scheduled opponent last week, Nicco Montano, tested positive for COVID-19. Both fights are making a late change, but Avila is the one to pair with Barberena on a parlay that’ll pay around -118.

<strong>Matt Schnell </strong>and <strong>Tyson Nam</strong> will send us into the main card. Nam has been bet to a -118 favorite with the early action on this flyweight fight. Nam has 10 knockouts to his name, which is a good number for a flyweight. He won his first UFC fight last time out with one of those knockouts over Zarrukh Adashev. Schnell is more of a known commodity with a lot more UFC experience, but Nam has gotten the early action and that stands out about the 36-year-old. Schnell’s last three fights have ended in a first-round stoppage. Under 2.5 at -120 is my favorite pick here. The smaller Octagon increases that chance as well.

<strong>Kyle Nelson (+185) vs. Billy Quarantillo (-220); Total: 2.5 (115/-145)</strong>

You basically have to bet somebody with the name Quarantillo in 2020, right? Billy is the favorite here at -220 against Kyle Nelson in the featherweight division. By the time this one gets going, Nelson will have gone 357 days between fights. He knocked out Polo Reyes in easily his best UFC appearance to date. He’s 1-2 in the UFC now after that win. Quarantillo has improved to 14-2 in his career with two UFC wins, but he hasn’t really fought anybody of value in Jacob Kilburn and Spike Carlyle. Neither guy has had a UFC appearance since.

Quarantillo is the much more aggressive striker between the two and the smaller cage dimensions should probably help him in this fight. It should also help the under, which is priced a little strong at -145, but that is probably justified. All three of Nelson’s UFC fights have ended in a stoppage.

<strong>Pick: Under 2.5 (-145)</strong>

<strong>Ed Herman (+195) vs. Mike Rodriguez (-230); Total: 1.5 (-125/-105)</strong>

Another big favorite here as Mike Rodriguez takes on Ed Herman in the light heavyweight division. Herman had a resurgence in 2019, as the now 39-year-old beat Patrick Cummins and Khadis Ibragimov to improve to 26-14 in his career. This will be his first fight in 2020, which could be part of the reason why the line is so high. Herman lost his three fights before the two wins, which is probably another contributing factor. He’ll turn 40 on October 2 and has a lot of fight miles to his name.

It is hard to figure of what Mike Rodriguez is. Since his win over Jamelle Jones on one of the earliest Dana White Contender Series broadcasts, Rodriguez has cone 2-2-1 in UFC. He lost to John Allan, but Allan tested positive after the fight and the loss was taken off of Rodriguez’s ledger. He did have an impress win over Marcin Prachnio last month and maybe that is the springboard that he needs.

Still, this line looks too high. Herman may not be in his prime anymore, but he’s got a lot of fight IQ and Rodriguez hasn’t fought many veteran fighters.

<strong>Pick: Ed Herman</strong>

<strong>Roxanne Modafferi (+275) vs. Andrea Lee (-325); Total: 2.5 (-400/300)</strong>

No, that isn’t a typo. This line implies that the fight goes the distance 80% of the time. It is extremely challenging to handicap Roxanne Modafferi. She scored that huge upset win over Maycee Barber back in January, but we did come to find out that Barber tore her ACL during the fight. Modafferi followed up that huge win with a loss to Lauren Murphy in a fight that was not very competitive back in June.

Andrea Lee also has a loss to Murphy on her resume. That came at UFC 247 in February before everything shut down. About the only certainty here is that the judges will be needed. The last five fights for Lee have all gone to decision in her UFC career. Five straight have gone 15 minutes for Modafferi and two of her TUF 26 fights went the distance in the semis and the finale. This price is a little high for Lee, but she likely wins and does so by decision. There are better fights to bet on.

<strong>Pick: Andrea Lee</strong>

<strong>Ottman Azaitar (+118) vs. Khama Worthy (-138); Total: 1.5 (-130/100)</strong>

Undefeated Ottman Azaitar will put that unblemished record on the line as an underdog against Khama Worthy. The money has been very one-sided on Worthy to this point. Azaitar knocked out Teemu Packalen in his UFC debut in what represented a big step up in class following more than a year on the sidelines. Eleven of Azaitar’s 12 fights have ended in a stoppage.

Yet, he isn’t getting a lot of love here against Worthy. The 33-year-old has gone 2-0 since joining the UFC with wins over Devonte Smith and Luis Pena. Worthy is the bigger fighter in the smaller cage and that is probably part of the handicap here. Also, Packalen is just 1-3 in his four UFC fights and that was his first fight in 30 months. The move on Worthy looks legit and very sharp in nature and I won’t disagree with it.

<strong>Pick: Khama Worthy</strong>

<strong>Michelle Waterson (+105) vs. Angela Hill (-125); Total: 4.5 (-280/220)</strong>

Michelle Waterson and Angela Hill meet in the main event of UFC Vegas 10. The 34-year-old Waterson has lost her last two fights, both by decision. She lost to Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Carla Esparza. There is no shame in either one of those losses. Waterson was originally supposed to fight Hill three weeks ago, but the fight was pushed back by Waterson for personal reasons. She’s ready to go now, though.

Angela Hill is coming off of a loss of her own to Claudia Gadelha. It stopped a three-fight winning streak for Hill, who is just 12-8 in her career. She was 6-2 when she joined the UFC, so she’s been a .500 fighter. Waterson has a strong ground game with nine career submissions. Hill needs to win by decision. She’s had a couple of knockout wins in the UFC, but only has five stoppage wins to her name. If Waterson can control the ground, she can control and win the fight that is expected to go 25 minutes. The mild upset is the pick here.

The Houston Astros have taken the first two games of this week’s four-game set from the Boston Red Sox. That means a win on Wednesday would secure a series victory and Houston is favored to do exactly that on June 2.

It will be Nick Pivetta and Framber Valdez to start this one off and bettors have spoken and spoken loudly about that pitching matchup with a 20-cent move in favor of the Astros, who are now listed in the -145 range at <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/mybookie/">MyBookie Sportsbook</a></strong> with a total of 8.5.

Let’s look deeper into this matchup and see if the line movement is correct.
<h2><strong><u>Boston Red Sox</u></strong></h2>
The Red Sox have had an impressive season so far, but they’ve also played one of the weakest schedules in the American League. Boston has yet to play the Yankees. The Red Sox did sweep Tampa Bay in a three-game series, but that happened a while ago before the current version of the Rays burst onto the scene. This has been the first series against Houston. Boston only played two interleague games against Atlanta and has not played a talented Washington team.

Stepping up in class to face the Astros has not gone well this week, as Houston owns a 16-3 edge in runs in the series. The Red Sox offense has been non-existent in this series and a reversal of fortunes for the pitching staff has taken place. We’ll see if they can right the ship for the last two games, but this felt like a long time coming given the schedule.

The Red Sox offense is starting to drop back a tiny bit, as Boston now ranks fifth in wOBA. They’ve been passed recently by some other teams and are starting to feel the effects of the low BB% that they’ve had all season long. They’ve been aggressive swinging the bats and have hit for a lot of power, but walks are guaranteed baserunners and a 7.1% BB% ranks among the lowest in the league.

Many would also say that the Red Sox have been fortunate on the pitching side. Nick Pivetta has a 3.86 ERA with a 3.41 FIP in his 53.2 innings of work. Even with the good returns of this season, Pivetta has a 5.22 ERA with a 4.47 FIP throughout his career. His HR/FB% is 16.7% over 460 MLB innings, but sits at just 6.8% this season. There are a lot of skeptics out there about his stat line, especially with a high walk rate, and we’re seeing the voices of those skeptics today.

The Red Sox do have one of the league’s better bullpens this season, as they rank sixth as a unit in fWAR and seventh in FIP. That has been a strength for the team and one that could come into play here if they can actually keep this one competitive or have a lead.
<h2><strong><u>Houston Astros</u></strong></h2>
The Astros seem like a team capable of turning it on and off this season. Houston has played very well for long stretches, but was also swept by the Rangers in a weekend set not that long ago. They’ve played better here of late while getting challenged by the Dodgers, Padres, and Red Sox during a tough stretch of the schedule. It seems like they just need that additional competitive fervor to get through these games at times.

Houston’s offense has been good all season long, but the Astros are now knocking on the door of being the best offense in baseball. By wRC+, they are. By wOBA, they rank second. Houston’s power production has improved of late and they’ve spent all season riding one of the lowest K% marks in baseball, so they’ve put a ton of balls in play with great success.

Houston still sits a half-game back of Oakland, even though the Astros have the only positive run differential in the division. They’re outscoring opponents by 1.2 runs per game. By Pythagorean Win-Loss record, the Astros should lead the division by five in the win column and eight in the loss column over the Athletics. Instead they trail because baseball is weird like that.

Framber Valdez gets the call tonight for Houston. The left-hander made his season debut last week against the Padres and went four innings with a solo homer and two walks over 18 batters. He struck out four. Everything looked fine for Valdez, though his velocity was down a little as he keeps building up his arm.

The concern is that Valdez might go 4-5 innings today, which means another big workload for an Astros bullpen that is a major weakness this season. The Astros rank in the bottom five in FIP and have one of the worst bullpens in baseball by fWAR. They’ll have to score some runs and play from in front here if they want to have a chance.
<h2><strong><u>Red Sox vs. Astros Free Pick</u></strong></h2>
The total has been bet down a little bit from 9 to 8.5, but I’d be looking for the over here. Valdez is not going to work deep into this game, which means a steady dose of Astros relievers. Pivetta is a guy that has some walk rate issues and will also give up home runs and hard contact. He’s definitely overachieved this season. Rather than lay the -145 price with Houston’s bullpen getting half or more of the outs, let’s look over instead.
