Old Dominion just fell 38-17 to Middle Tennessee. The defense let the Blue Raiders eat up the clock by rushing for 147 yards on 35 attempts, along with one rushing TD. Asher O'Hara put up a solid showing in the win for Middle Tennessee, recording 78 rushing yards on 14 attempts. For Old Dominion, Hayden Wolff completed 39-of-65 passes for 321 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Robert Washington (44 rushing yards on nine attempts, one TD) spearheaded the running game while Aaron Moore (14 receptions, 194 yards, one TD) and Marcus Joyner (six catches, 44 yards) led the pass-catching corps in the loss.

Charlotte has run the ball on 61.1 percent of its offensive possessions this year while Old Dominion has an overall rush percentage of 53.1 percent. The 49ers have produced 208 rush yards/game (including 177 per game versus Conference USA opponents) and have 23 scores on the ground this year. The Monarchs are logging 90 rushing yards per game (71 in conference) and have 13 total rush TDs.

It appears that the 49ers may have the more disruptive lines up front. Their offensive line has yielded only 38 sacks while the D-line registered 19 sacks. The Monarchs, on the other hand, have allowed 32 sacks and their defense has forced only 22 sacks.

Saturday provided plenty of drama and we’ll have some very intriguing games on Monday as a result, but we’ve got second round action on Sunday to get through first and a lot of good games on the docket. One such matchup will be the game between North Texas and Villanova in the South Region.

It is interesting, isn’t it, that Villanova beat Winthrop and North Texas beat Purdue in overtime and this line is smaller than Purdue’s number against UNT in that first round game. Are we sure that Villanova is an underdog on a neutral to Purdue? Is it because of the Collin Gillespie injury or something else?

Regardless of the reason(s), Villanova is -6 at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bookmaker"><strong>Bookmaker Sportsbook</strong></a> with a total of 126.5 in what is expected to be a low-scoring affair.
<h3><strong><u>North Texas</u></strong><strong><u> Mean Green</u></strong></h3>
Grant McCasland outcoached Matt Painter. The Mean Green won four games in four days in the Conference USA Tournament to get in and then rode that wave to a 78-69 win over Purdue in Saturday’s first-round action. The Boilermakers had 20 offensive rebounds to just eight for North Texas, but failed to capitalize on enough of those chances to win.

North Texas may not withstand another big disparity on the glass like that, but it is far less of a worry in this one taking on Villanova. The Wildcats are not a great offensive rebounding team anyway. Will that help North Texas’s hopes of advancing? It certainly could, especially if they are able to hold the Wildcats to 36% from the floor like they did the Boilermakers.

One concern for UNT here is that they scored 1.175 points per possession against Purdue and it’s not like there were a ton of free throws in the game, despite the overtime period and how games get extended at this time of the year. North Texas didn’t have many offensive performances like that in league play or in the conference tournament, scoring just .898 PPP against LA Tech and .944 against Western Kentucky in the title game. That game was 48-48 going to overtime.

Another concern for UNT is that Villanova is second in the nation in TO%. Forcing turnovers was a big part of the Mean Green’s success with a TO% that ranks 55th in the nation at 21.2%. That means they’ll have to rely heavily on a defense that held the opposition to 44.7% from the floor over these first 27 games. Opponents are also only shooting 31.5% on threes.

North Texas has the defensive prowess to not only hang around, but possibly win another gritty type of game. You just wonder if this team offensively can take advantage of what is a weaker Villanova defense than we’ve seen in past years.

<h3><strong><u>Villanova Wildcats</u></strong></h3>
I hammered this point on ATS Radio and in other previews for March Madness, but a lot of people were ready to discard Villanova after the loss in the Big East Tournament to eventual winner Georgetown. Given the Hoyas’ performance against Colorado, I guess you can see why. However, the Hoyas were 23-for-23 from the line in that game and won by a point. Villanova did nothing wrong in that game really except for that.

Life without Collin Gillespie wouldn’t be easy, but Jay Wright had Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Jermaine Samuels, and Justin Moore to rely on in his absence. Robinson-Earl was the star in the Winthrop win with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead four Wildcats in double figures. Wright figured it out, as good coaches do.

Winthrop, though, was not a great defensive team. The Eagles were fine, but a weak strength of schedule and some mediocre shooting stats against gave Villanova a real good chance and one that they did in fact take advantage of in Friday’s game. This will be a much stiffer defensive test for the ‘Cats.

Like I mentioned, Villanova takes tremendous care of the basketball. They’re also 55th in 2P% at 52.9% and 104th in 3P% at 35.1%. Villanova won’t get the extra possessions that Purdue got on the offensive glass, so the Wildcats will need to make shots. Will they make enough of them in Gillespie’s absence here?

Perhaps a bigger question, as the spread sits at 6, which is right in late-game fouling range, will the Wildcats be able to salt away the game without Gillespie, who led the team with an 83.3% success rate at the line.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
This should be a lower-scoring game with two teams that rank in the bottom 40 in adjusted tempo and a North Texas team that plays tenacious defense. On the other hand, Villanova ranks 246th in 3P% against and 201st in 2P% against, so North Texas has the chance to make some shots here.

Add in the potential for some late-game fouling and two teams that shoot the three pretty well and I’m looking at the over. Bankers Life Fieldhouse has actually been the best of the venues to the under to this point, but that seems like small sample size noise more than anything.

A binding agent was applied to the oval track and we’ll have to see how that plays out. The main straightaway was part of the Grand Prix race, but the turns were not. Drivers have gotten some practice and qualifying reps, but we’ll have to see how they run with everybody on the track.

<h5><strong>What’s Happened So Far?</strong></h5>
We haven’t covered the IndyCar Series season to date, but this is the sixth race of the race. We’ve had five different winners. Josef Newgarden opened with a win in St. Petersburg. Colton Herta won in Austin. Takuma Sato won in Birmingham, Alabama. Alexander Rossi won at Long Beach. Simon Pagenaud won the Indy Grand Prix.

Newgarden is the points leader with 184. He finished 15th in the Indy Grand Prix to give up some of his lead to Dixon, who is second with 176 points. He hasn’t won yet, but has finished second three times in the five races. Rossi and Pagenaud are tied for third with 147 points. Sato rounds out the top five.

Indy 500 co-favorite Will Power is sixth and hasn’t finished higher than third this season. Sebastien Bourdais is seventh, with Graham Rahal, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and James Hinchcliffe rounding out the top 10.

The Indy 500 is unique in that it is the first oval track race of the season. The next one will be at Texas on June 8.

<h5><strong>The Big Board</strong></h5>
As mentioned, Will Power is one of the favorites this week. Pole sitter Simon Pagenaud is the other early in the week with odds of +750. It seems like IndyCar has an enhanced probability of mechanical failures and wrecks relative to NASCAR, so the favorites are higher priced and the middle guys are priced accordingly.

After Power and Pagenaud, Ed Carpenter, who was the second-fastest in qualifying, is listed at +840. So is Alexander Rossi. Points leader Josef Newgarden is fifth at +850. This will be Carpenter’s first race of the season. Rookie Colton Herta is +1100, with Spencer Pigot at +1300 and Scott Dixon at the same price. Helio Castroneves is +1500. Everybody else is +2000 on down.

<h5><strong>Road vs. Oval</strong></h5>
One of the things that makes the Indy 500 so interesting is that a lot of open-wheel racers excel on road courses and struggle on oval courses. As exceptional as Scott Dixon has been in his career, his only win in this race came back in 2008. Dario Franchitti and Dan Wheldon are the only multiple winners in this race dating back to 2004. Helio Castroneves won in 2009 and also won in 2001 and 2002. He is the only active three-time winner of the Indy 500. AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr., and Rick Mears all won four times.

Newgarden has 11 career wins, but only three have come on ovals. He won at Iowa, Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, and Phoenix with one win per season from 2016-18. Dixon has one win, two seconds, and a third in the Indy 500. He did win at Texas last year for the second time in his career and he has various oval wins at Phoenix, Kentucky, and Homestead-Miami, but he’s also been a lot more proficient on road courses.

Pagenaud hasn’t finished better than sixth in the Indy 500. He did win on the oval at Phoenix in 2017, but that is his only oval win. He was second at Texas last year and third two years ago. Rossi won his first Indy 500 in 2016 and that is his only traditional oval win. He does have a win on the Tricky Triangle at Pocono. He starts from ninth, but he’s not a bad bet this week.

Illinois native Carpenter qualified second for the race, but he’s had the pole position three times in the past with finishes of 10th, 27th, and second. It’s hard to like his chances, even with the good pole spot. Herta, a 19-year-old rookie, won the Indy Lights race last year prior to the 500 and actually finished second in points last season. He had a win at Daytona earlier this year in the SportsCar Championship. He might be one of the better oval racers here, but he’s young and that has shown the last three races with finishes of 24th, 23rd, and 23rd.

<h5><strong>Picks</strong></h5>
So who do we take this week? Will Power is having a rough season, but he has two career wins at Pocono and has two wins, a second, and a few pole positions at Texas. He likes this track, with three Indy Grand Prix wins and last year’s Indy 500 win. He’s a co-favorite at +750, but that’s just fine with me.

Tony Kanaan’s best days are behind him, but he’s got a balloon price at +2650. Kanaan, who even ran in the Xfinity Series a bit, won this race back in 2013. He had top-five finishes in 2016 and 2017. He hasn’t had much success the last few years, but he’s run well on the oval at Texas and also won in 2014 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana on the oval. He’s a decent long shot pick and a good matchups bet.
