Welcome back! Remember when the season “ended” 3 weeks ago? Well… It is back! This week players head to The Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia for A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. The new schedule has pushed this long time event into what is called the “Swing Season,” which basically encompasses every event from here until the normal start of the season in January. While for the most part the big names will take these events off, I love them as they feature a bunch of guys who just gained their card through the Korn Ferry Qualifying. For handicapping purposes, The Greenbrier provides some nice historical data as this has been a mainstay on tour for quite some time. Before we breakdown Old White, lets recap the Tour Championship

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP</strong></span>

The end of the 2018/29 season has been more than amazing for readers as Rory McIlroy closes his starting stroke gap to cash his 8/1 Outright recommendation, making 3 straight winners for the article. His season was spectacular and without Brooks going absolutely crazy in Majors, Rory would have been a shoe in for Player of the Year honors. I thoroughly enjoyed the new format for the Tour Championship as it paired the players who have been most successful this season together, all fighting for that $15 million prize. Now all the points are reset and the next think you know you will be reading a Masters Preview article.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>COURSE PREVIEW</strong></span>

Old White TPC has some pretty interesting immediate history. In 2016 Old White and 3 other courses were flooded with water covering up to 6 feet in depth. This obviously resulted in the canceling of that rendition of the event, but it also led to a remodel of the course which needed complete reseeding. The resulting course didn’t change much in terms of playability tee to green but the contours on and around the greens are different substantially changed. Players this week will see a classic, tree lined design where any type of player can win.

The course is set at a resort (you will see falconry commercials this week, bet it!) within a National Park “high” up in the Appalachian Mountains, 2000 feet above sea level. This provides a nice advantage for the shorter hitters who can add 10-15 yards onto their drives. The fairways here are wide and the greens are large so this typically turns into a putting contest, making it rather difficult to handicap.

It has been some time since we have seen most of the guys making up this field. Many of them were toiling on the Korn Ferry Tour trying to secure their card, or hanging out at their local country club after being cut early from the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The course lends itself to a multitude of skill sets being successful with its wide fairways and large greens and the fact that form stats are rather old at this point means there is a certain grasping at straws effect when it comes to a statistical analysis this week. Strokes Gained Approach will of course be a staple of my model but I may put a little more credence to putting as opposed to normal weeks. There are only 2 Par 5s at Great White, which is a good thing to note for anyone looking to live bet the event, and it is paramount to score well on them. Ultimately, this is the quintessential week where a “pray and spray” method for outrights will yield the most success and that will be reflected in my full card below. You will also see that I allocated less than my usual 2 units, I plan to enter into the post round market rather than dedicate the full unit amount pre tournament.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>THE PLAYS</strong></span>

<strong>Scottie Scheffler +5650 –</strong> If we are going to dip into the recent Korn Ferry graduates, why not the guy who earned the only fully exempt PGA Tour Status (including a PLAYERS invite) by finishing on top of both the Regular Season Points List as well as the Finals 25 Points list that combined the final three events of the Korn Ferry Finals. Scheffler bagged nine top-10 finishes during the season including a win, then to close the season he won the first Korn Ferry Finals event and parlayed that effort into a T11 and T7 in the subsequent two events. The former University of Texas standout is an absolute ball striking machine, coming in 15th in driving distance and 4th in greens in regulation on the Korn Ferry Tour. Scheffler did manage to qualify for the U.S. Open, barely missing the cut, but proved he could compete in his limited 2018/19 PGA Tour appearances making all 3 cuts. All signs point towards a jump forward with Scheffler, and I am more than happy to get out in front of the market on a guy who absolutely has the game to find himself in the winner’s circle.

<strong>Brian Harman +5750 –</strong> For anyone who listens to the FORE! Profit Podcast that I co-host with Haven Brown they know my disdain for Harman’s game. A short hitting, inconsistent iron player is not the typical guy I back. However, when there is a lack of quality form stats and the field is as weak as it is here, I typically align myself with players who have shown the ability to close out a tournament. Harman fits this bill with his two PGA Tour wins, but also showed some decent form to end the year. What stands out most is his ability to drive the ball straight as he has gained strokes off the tee in 8 of his last 10 showings. This is difficult to do considering his length and Harman will benefit greatly from the altitude adding distance to his drives. Harman has always been a streaky putter and the fact he will live in the fairway with shorter than usual irons in should equate to excellent green in regulation numbers, giving him a chance if he can get the flat stick going. In a field made up of few guys with winning experience, I’ll take a vet who has proven he can close at 50/1 or better.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>THE MATCHUPS</strong></span>

<strong>1u Cameron Tringale (+100) over Brenden Grace –</strong> In a field full of newcomers, it isn’t surprising to see Tringale high up in my model. His last time out, he was abysmal and that looks to be driving his price down. Prior to a hiccup at the Northern Trust, Tringale was 10/12 on made cuts in 2019 behind a solid all around game. Most importantly though Tringale is a solid putter gaining a full stroke on average per round over his last 10 round. Making putts will be absolutely paramount this week as most players will not struggle to find fairways and greens. Grace is the exact opposite here, showing terrible form to finish off the season where he finished higher than 48th only once since THE PLAYERS. His struggles are predominately on the greens where he he is giving up a stroke and a half per round on average over his last 10 and 20 rounds. In what is sure to be a putting contest, I will take the proven entity that is Tringale’s flat stick over the streaky Grace who has shown very little form in 2019.

<p><strong>Astros dropped a big lead in a loss to the Phillies</strong></p>



<p>The Houston Astros suffered their first postseason defeat this year even though it didn’t look that way in the opening few frames in Game 1 of the World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Houston was 5-0 up after the first three innings, and when the home fans thought that it was going to be an easy win to open the World Series, the Phillies responded and won thanks to J.T. Realmuto.</p>



<p>Kyle Tucker opened the scoring with a solo homer and then added a three-run homer to give his team a 5-0 lead. However, the Astros were in an inferior position since Philadelphia took over and the home team’s batters couldn’t score for the remainder of the game. Justin Verlander struggled in his start as he allowed five runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks over 5.0 innings. Still, he got a no-decision, while Luis Garcia took a loss.</p>

Both pitchers are phenomenal in the postseason so far, but I am giving a slight advantage to Framber Valdez, who has solid numbers against the Phillies’ batters. In his lone start against Philadelphia this year, Valdez allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings to get a win. After last night’s poor pitching from Justin Verlander, I expect to see a much better showing from Houston’s No. 2 here.</p>

<p>Framber Valdez with a 1.42 ERA and Zack Wheeler with a 1.78 ERA have been magnificent in the postseason and they are clearly the best playoff pitchers of their respective teams this year. Given that Valdez allowed just a .135 BA to the Phillies’ batters in his career, I expect him to have a quality start. Wheeler allowed only five runs in four playoff starts and managed to fire shutouts in two of them. Under is 6-0 in the Astros’ last six games with the total set at 7.0-8.5, while Under is 6-2 in Houston’s previous eight games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.</p>

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Diego Padres Betting Pick 09/22/19

College basketball regains the spotlight on Tuesday night with another week over in the NFL. It is a very busy betting board for December 15 and there are a lot of games to pick from and put in the spotlight. We’ll do that with a Big 12 battle between Kansas State and Iowa State in the 9 p.m. ET window on ESPNU.

At present, it looks like it could be a down year for these two programs, but success in the Big 12 is certainly hard to come by on an annual basis and a lot can change as the games get played.

Iowa State is -8 with a total of 137 at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a> in what is the conference play opener for both teams.

Let’s take a look at how both teams stack up and handicap the game:
<h3><strong><u>Kansas</u></strong><strong><u> State</u></strong><strong><u> Wildcats</u></strong></h3>
UMKC and Milwaukee. Those are the only two wins for Kansas State this season and those wins were by four points and one point, respectively. Bruce Weber’s team already has four loses on the season, including a 13-point loss to Fort Hays State a week ago. The other losses were Drake, Colorado, and UNLV.

It has been about as bad of a start as you can get for the Wildcats. Generally speaking, teams that lose in glorious fashion to a lower-division team wind up having a little bit of betting value because everybody just dismisses them and their chances of doing anything of consequence after such an embarrassing moment.

While it’s true that allowing 1.113 points per possession to Fort Hays State is pretty unforgivable, there would seem to be only one way to go. It wasn’t an impressive win over Milwaukee by any means, but at least Kansas State pulled the game out to roll some positive feelings into conference games against Iowa State and Baylor.

Kansas State ranks 275th in eFG% defense in the early going at 55.5%. That is not at all what we are used to seeing from Pearl teams and especially not for teams from Manhattan. The Wildcats have been able to cover up a few problem areas by shooting 38.3% from 3 on the young season and by attacking the offensive glass well, but this is a deeply-flawed team that most people probably forget was 3-13 in Big 12 play last season.

Xavier Sneed ran out of eligibility and Cartier Diarra moved on. The Wildcats are trying to rely heavily on freshman Nijel Pack, one of the better recruits that Weber has gotten to commit. He’s shooting 54% from 3, but under 35% from 2. It is hard to go through growing pains together with a freshman at the helm.

<h3><strong><u>Iowa</u></strong><strong><u> State</u></strong><strong><u> Cyclones</u></strong></h3>
Iowa State has only been able to play three games. If the game against in-state rival Iowa is any indication, the Cyclones have some defensive problems, too. Iowa scored 1.457 points per possession in Friday’s 105-77 win. Imagine this, Iowa State scored 1.068 PPP and still lost by 28 in a game that was only played to 72 possessions. That loss, coupled with an offensive outage against South Dakota State, doesn’t seem to be factored too much into the line for this one.

Iowa State’s lone win was over Arkansas Pine Bluff, thought to be one of the 50 worst teams in the country this season. The Cyclones have not been getting to the line. They’ve been awful on the defensive glass. They haven’t been paying attention to the details and the little things.

Maybe getting into rhythm will help. Iowa State played on November 29 and then December 2, but went nine days between games before the Iowa blowout. Every team has had hurdles and challenges at the outset, but Iowa State’s inconsistent schedule can’t have helped.

The departure of Tyrese Haliburton has not helped. Haliburton was easily the most efficient offensive player for the Cyclones last season and their top defender from a steals standpoint. This was a bad defensive rebounding team last season and they had to rely on forcing turnovers because they struggled badly in the halfcourt.

With Haliburton gone, holdover Rasir Bolton and Troy transfer Javan Johnson have picked up the offensive slack, along with three-time transfer Jalen Coleman-Lands, who was most recently with DePaul. Lands is 18-of-35 from the floor.

Like Kansas State, it seems easy to forget when teams have a down year. Iowa State was just 12-20 last season and 5-13 in conference play. Right before everything shut down, the Cyclones were bounced from the Big 12 Conference Tournament by Oklahoma State.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
This seems like a pretty lofty number for Iowa State to cover. Neither team has played well at the start of the season, but this should be a lower-scoring, ugly type of game. Neither team has excelled defensively and both teams are trying to find some offensive continuity.

Kansas State’s losses have been more egregious than Iowa State’s in the minds of the oddsmakers and the betting markets, so this line looks inflated.
