That is especially true of the futures market for player awards. We’re talking about probably 10-12 starts for all of the starting pitchers. We’re talking about maybe 225 or so plate appearances for the MVP candidates. We’re talking about a lot of individual variance.

As we look at some MLB player futures markets in the lead-up to the season, which starts on Thursday July 23, you’ll want to keep that in mind. Many people, myself included, have said over and over again that taking short prices and/or chalky futures is probably not the way to approach this season. Over 162 games, the best will be the best more often than not, but over 60 games, a lot of different possibilities come into play.

Futures are especially tricky to play this season because relatively modest injuries are going to wipe out big chunks of the season and positive COVID tests are going to take away two weeks, if not more, in most cases. Each future is an exercise in hunting for the best price or the best value, but futures this season, more than ever, are also an exercise in hoping for the best.

Harlond Beverly and Abdi Bashir Jr. each added 15 points, with Beverly shooting 63.6% from the field. Daniels scored 8 points in the 3rd quarter, while Trae Young and Johnson each added 8 points in the 4th.</p><p>Despite a rough 1st quarter where the Hawks gave up 39 points, they bounced back with a stellar defensive effort in the 2nd, allowing just 11 points. They held the Wizards to 25 points in the 3rd but struggled again in the 4th, giving up 42 points. Overall, Atlanta allowed 117 points but still managed to secure the win.</p> <p>The Hawks held the Wizards to 40% shooting from the field, including 34% from three-point range, where Washington made 15 threes. The Wizards also went 16/21 from the free-throw line. Atlanta recorded 40 defensive rebounds, gave up 13 offensive boards, and added 10 steals and 10 blocks.</p><h3>Will the Trail Blazers Exceed Expectations at Home?</h3><p>Portland improved to 5-8 on the season with a 106-98 win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday. The Trail Blazers, who were +10 point underdogs, not only pulled off the upset but also covered the spread. The total points for the game were 204, falling short of the 219.5 O/U line.</p> <p>After trailing 33-23 at the end of the 1st quarter, Portland turned things around by outscoring Minnesota 25-15 in the 2nd. The teams were tied at 76 going into the 4th, but a 13-0 run helped the Trail Blazers pull away, as they outscored the Timberwolves 30-22 in the final quarter.</p><p>Shaedon Sharpe led the Trail Blazers to a win over the Timberwolves, scoring 33 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. He shot 52.2% from the field, hitting 3 threes at 30% efficiency. Donovan Clingan added 17 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 60%, while Dalano Banton contributed 13 points and 5 assists, hitting 57.1% of his shots.</p> <p>Portland shot 45.8% from the field and 36% from three, making 9 threes in the game. Sharpe scored 13 points in the 4th quarter, while Clingan added 8 in the 3rd. Banton and Scoot Henderson also played key roles, with Banton scoring 5 points in the final period and Henderson adding 8 points in the 2nd quarter.</p><p>After a rough 1st quarter, the Trail Blazers tightened up defensively, allowing just 15 points in the 2nd quarter and 22 in the 4th, holding the Timberwolves to 98 points. Atlanta Hawks vs Portland Trail Blazers Betting Pick & Prediction 11/17/24

UFC Vegas 9 is set for Saturday night at the UFC APEX, but a lot of the fights that people were looking forward to have been moved to other events. As a reminder that COVID-19 is still alive and well, multiple fights have been affected by the dastardly virus. Ricky Simon and Nicco Montano were forced from the card. Maryna Moroz couldn’t secure a travel visa because of restrictions.

On the plus side, we do get the rescheduled fight between Ovince Saint Preux and Alonzo Menifield after OSP tested positive for the virus a few weeks ago. That is not the main event on the card, though. That spotlight belongs to Alistair Overeem and Augusto Sakai with a heavyweight main event on what is slated to be a card with nine fights.

As always, we’ll take a look at all of them. We’ll do that this week with odds from <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/mybookie"><strong>MyBookie Sportsbook</strong></a> to change it up a little.

Hunter Azure opens up the card as a -225 favorite in the bantamweight division against Cole Smith. Azure lost his biggest fight to date against Brian Kelleher by knockout. That brought the promising prospect down a peg and now he’ll be forced to work his way back up the division by proving himself in matches like this. Smith is 1-1 in his UFC career, but he hasn’t fought in nearly a year. He’s +185 and this fight is lined at 2.5 and over -245. Three of Azure’s last four fights have gone the distance. He should win and is a money line parlay piece.

Undefeated Alexander Romanov squares up with veteran Marcos Rogerio De Lima in the heavyweight division. Romanov is 11-0 in his MMA career, but this is his UFC debut coming over from Eagles FC. Romanov is a -135 favorite with +105 on the takeback for Rogerio, who scored an impressive KO win over Ben Sosoli back in February. The 35-year-old is 2-1 as a heavyweight, with his lone loss coming to the much taller Stefan Struve. Romanov is a smaller heavyweight at just six feet tall and I think that helps Rogerio de Lima. I like the +105 dog here.

Viviane Araujo slots in on short notice to fight Montana De La Rosa this flyweight fracas. Originally, Maryna Moroz was set for this fight, but she had problems securing a travel visa and Araujo answered the call. The notice isn’t really that short, as the decision was made August 12. Araujo is a -185 favorite here with ample prep time against De La Rosa, who to her credit, has won four of her last five fights. Araujo has not fought since a disappointing loss to Jessica Eye back in December. The line suggests a bounce back, but De La Rosa may be a feisty underdog in a fight expected to go the distane with -265 on over 2.5.

Long-limbed middleweight Andre Muniz finds himself a +135 underdog against Bartosz Fabinski in what is his second official UFC fight. The two-time Dana White Contender Series fighter beat Antonio Arroyo last November, but this is definitely a step up against Fabinski, who just beat Darren Stewart when the two participated in a one-off CWFC bout. Dana White wanted the fight for himself, but COVID-19 put the kibosh on that. Fabinski’s win over Stewart was his most impressive win to date, so you hope there’s no letdown at -165, but you never know. He should win here, as this is a step up in class for Muniz. This will be a very technical fight, as Muniz prefers to win by submission and Fabinski likes the ground and pound. Whichever fighter gets top control will win and that should be the more experienced Fabinski.

<strong>Jalin Turner (+130) vs. Thiago Moises (-160); Total: 2.5 (+120/-150)</strong>

Jalin Turner is just 2-2 since he bloodied and battered Gleidson Cutis on the Dana White Contender Series. He drew a tough first opponent in Beneil Dariush and lost, but he’s beaten Callan Potter and Joshua Calibao, which took place back in February. Now Turner draws Thiago Moises, a fighter that also has a loss to Dariush to his name.

Moises scored a “name” win over Michael Johnson last time out, but Johnson’s best days are very much behind him. This line does feel a little bit inflated off of that last performance, but Turner has also been something of a disappointment in the UFC after how impressive he was on the way to the big stage. Turner does have a huge size edge here as he is the taller, longer fighter. With the smaller UFC APEX Octagon, that size advantage for Turner could be magnified even more, especially with some of the knockout power he has shown recently. I’m on the dog here.

<strong>Pick: Jalin Turner</strong>

<strong>Kevin Natividad (+185) vs. Brian Kelleher (-225); Total: 2.5 (-115/-115)</strong>

Brian Kelleher had to fight under some very difficult circumstances last time out. He fought the emotionally-charged Cody Stamann, who had just lost his younger brother the week prior. Kelleher lost the fight by unanimous decision. By no means did he punt that fight, but the fight certainly had a different dynamic. Kelleher should be in a bounce back spot here now against UFC debutant Kevin Natividad.

Kelleher was originally set to face Ricky Simon and would have likely been a decent underdog in that fight, but one of Simon’s cornermen tested positive for COVID, so he was removed from the card. Natividad hasn’t fought since July 17. He was fighting in LFA, which is a solid promotion, but Kelleher has a lot more experience at the top level and he needs a win after that Stamann loss. This feels a lot like the Hunter Azure fight, except Kelleher is a clear favorite. He’s fighting a young guy that has shown promise, but isn’t really ready for a fight like this.

<strong>Pick: Brian Kelleher</strong>

<strong>Zelim Imadaev (-115) vs. Michel Pereira (-115); Total: 1.5 (-150/120)</strong>

This is the biggest fight of Zelim Imadaev’s career. The 25-year-old left Russia with a perfect 8-0 record. Most of his wins came in FNG. He’s 0-2 in his UFC career with losses to Max Griffin and Danny Roberts. Those are two solid fighters. He certainly hasn’t gotten that cupcake fight that we’ve seen some UFC debutants and promising prospects get. This is not a must-win fight for his UFC future, but he needs this one. He needs that first win.

The 26-year-old Pereira had 31 fights under his belt before he got his UFC shot, so he has been a very busy fighter. At least until COVID. Pereira was DQ’d in his last fight back in mid-February and suffered his second straight UFC loss. Pereira was easily in line for the win over Diego Sanchez when he landed an illegal knee on his vulnerable opponent. The two have a common opponent in Roberts, who Pereira knocked out in his debut. He’s kind of a wild card in his fights. He badly missed weight against Tristan Connelly and then had the DQ last time out in a fight he was clearly winning. Until Imadaev proves something at the UFC level, it has to be Pereira, but this is a tough fight to call.

<strong>Pick: Michel Pereira</strong>

<strong>Ovince Saint Preux (+100) vs. Alonzo Menifield (-130); Total: 1.5 (-130/100)</strong>

In full disclosure, this fight was supposed to take place two weeks ago at UFC Fight Night: Munhoz vs. Edgar, so let’s look back at what I said then:

Ovince Saint Preux has lost three of his last four fights. His only 2020 showing was a split decision loss in kind of a bland fight against Ben Rothwell. Neither fighter landed a ton of strikes, but Rothwell controlled the fight and won by enough on the stat sheet to get the win. OSP is fighting for the 39th time and it does feel like the 37-year-old is running out of tread on the tires to a degree.

Alonzo Menifield is looking to bounce back from a loss to Devin Clark. It was his first non-finish in his career and his gas tank was not up to par in that fight. He had won all but two of his fights in the first round by stoppage. That is really the key to this fight. If Menifield can finish it early, as he has so many other opponents, he’ll be in great shape. If not, OSP’s cardio could be enough to get the win in the third round or by decision.

Menifield has the higher upside, but a live bet on OSP late might not be a bad idea if the fight isn’t over before then.

Now, as this fight goes off with OSP freshly removed from having COVID-19, you have to wonder about how this goes for him. Many athletes that have had the virus have spoken about lingering issues. Initially, as you can see, I felt like OSP would have a chance in the later rounds with his cardio. Now I don’t think that’s the case. It’s entirely possible that he was fully asymptomatic or whatever else, but he hasn’t really been able to train the same. He can’t be the sharpest version of himself and he’s already on the backside of his career.

I liked Menifield then and I like him even more now.

Augusto Sakai only has one loss to his name. Alistair Overeem has 18, but the 40-year-old has also been a UFC fixture for a long, long time. Sakai has four UFC fights and a Dana White Contender Series appearance. We’ll see what he does here against one of the legends of the sport. To this point, Sakai has been impressive with five wins in his last five fights. He’s won twice by decision and three times by knockout.

You can knock Overeem out. It has happened 14 times in his career. This fight will be a great test for Sakai’s takedown defense. Overeem has 17 career submission wins. None of Sakai’s 17 pro fights have ended in a submission, but the amazing thing is that Overeem hasn’t had a submission win in almost 11 years. Sakai has never been knocked out. Unless Overeem is going to turn back the clock here, then I don’t know if standing and throwing with Sakai is the right call.

Overeem is the best of the old guys that Sakai has fought, but he’s had enough to get wins over Blagoy Ivanov and Andrei Arlovski by decision. I feel like he’s being disrespected a little bit here. Overeem nearly went the distance with Jairzinho Rozenstruik and knocked out Walt Harris, so he’s got a little extra bounce recently. This looks like a great fight, but a really challenging handicap. I’m not sure who to take here, but Sakai at the plus price seems like the better value.

After four successful cards at Fight Island, the UFC returns home to Las Vegas and the APEX facility for UFC on ESPN+ 31. The main event will feature Derek Brunson and Edmen Shahbazyan to finish off a card with 11 fights.

Fighters from the United States did not fare well in Abu Dhabi for one reason or another, but the fact that they will be back on American soil could serve them well this weekend. This fight card is set to start at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday August 1 and you’ll need ESPN+ to see the main portion of the event.

We’ll take a look at odds from <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a> and break down all 11 matches on the card, including some extra detail on the five main card bouts.

Action starts in the bantamweight division with -320 favorite <strong>Chris Gutierrez</strong> against UFC newcomer <strong>Cody Durden</strong>. Not to be confused with Tyler Durden of fictional <em>Fight Club</em> fame, Cody Durden is the last-minute replacement for Luke Sanders. He last fought on July 18 with a first-round knockout in NFC, so this is an extremely quick turnaround on short notice for the 11-2 fighter. Gutierrez is 3-1 in his official UFC fights after losing to Raoni Barcelos at the TUF 28 Finale. He should move to 4-1 here as Durden skips several levels of competition to get to UFC.

<strong>Timur Valiev</strong> is another UFC newcomer as he gets set to face <strong>Jamall Emmers</strong>. Valiev, however, is -170 for his fight. The former WSOF fighter actually has just two losses to his name and one of them was to Gutierrez. He’s won six in a row and is getting quite a bit of respect in the odds here, even though Emmers is the taller fighter. Emmers lost his UFC debut back at UFC 248 right before the shutdown. Valiev lost his debut fight over a decade ago and then had that split-decision loss to Gutierrez. Maybe the 30-year-old does indeed make a good first impression here.

Two names that are a lot more familiar to UFC fans are <strong>Eric Spicely</strong> and <strong>Markus Perez</strong>. They’ll meet at 185 pounds here. Spicely’s return to UFC did not go well with a loss to Deron Winn back on June 22 of last year. He had won twice in CES to get back, but it looked like the same old Spicely in his return. Perez is just 2-3 in UFC since joining the promotion. He is -200 to even up his record in a battle of fringy UFC guys. Spicely might need this fight to salvage another contract down the line.

<strong>Ray Borg </strong>is a -235 favorite against <strong>Nate Maness</strong>, even though the underdog has a six-inch height advantage and a big reach advantage as well. Maness is making his UFC debut with a major step up in class and the 29-year-old draws Borg’s strong ground game. Borg has lost three of his last five fights, but he’s lost to Demetrious Johnson, Casey Kenney, and Ricky Simon. Maness isn’t on that level. This looks like a match to get Borg back in the win column.

Let’s see if the career renaissance continues for <strong>Ed Herman</strong>. Herman lost three fights in a row and five of seven before winning his two most recent contests against Patrick Cummins and Khadis Ibragimov. He is +145 to make it three in a row when he takes on <strong>Gerald Meerschaert</strong>. This is a quick return for Meerschaert, who was knocked out by Ian Heinisch just under two months ago. This is actually his third fight of 2020 already, which is rather amazing given that there has been a global pandemic. Meerschaert has lost four of six, but finds himself at -170 here. That seems to say a lot about Herman, no?

The last fight on the prelim card brings us <strong>Frankie Saenz </strong>and <strong>Jonathan Martinez</strong>. Saenz is fighting for the first time in over 16 months. He was last seen getting knocked out by Marlon Vera. Martinez lost at UFC 247 to Andre Ewell to snap a modest two-fight winning streak. That was the third loss of his career. Martinez is a -253 favorite here over Saenz with a heavily-juiced total on the over. The 39-year-old Saenz probably doesn’t have too many fights left in him and a beatdown here could accelerate that retirement process.

Initially, Trevin Giles was going to face Jun Yong Park, but travel restrictions because of COVID-19 have kept both Park and Da Ung Jun at home. Now Giles will draw Kevin Holland, who just got switched on to the card a little over a week ago. Holland is still the big favorite north of $2.

Giles got back in the win column against James Krause back at UFC 247 in February, but it was not an inspiring performance. Holland is back after knocking out Anthony Hernandez just 39 seconds into their fight on May 16. He got caught by Brendan Allen in a submission, but Holland has been very impressive in his UFC bouts otherwise. Giles doesn’t have a great ground game. Holland is the better striker. That is why we see the big favorite role here and the chalk should hold up.

<strong>Pick: Kevin Holland</strong>

<strong>Bobby Green (+131) vs. Lando Vannata (-151); Total: 2.5 (-275/215)</strong>

Bobby Green has gone the distance in each of his last four fights. Twice he has won unanimously and twice he has lost unanimously. He’ll now take on Lando Vannata in a fight very much expected to go to the cards. Green survived a slam takedown from Clay Guida last time out to pick up the win, as he was the far more accurate and aggressive striker.

Vannata is coming off of a loss to Yancy Medeiros before the pandemic shut everything down. He’s 2-2-1 over his last five fights and has gone the distance in four of those. That’s why we have this big -275 price tag. Vannata wasn’t any more active than Medeiros, he was just more accurate. That fight was kept virtually upright for both guys. Green is a more versatile fighter and should be just as active as Vannata. This looks like a good spot to roll the dice on an upset.

<strong>Pick: Bobby Green</strong>

<strong>Randy Brown (+151) vs. Vicente Luque (-176); Total: 1.5 (-165/135)</strong>

Randy Brown and Vicente Luque could very well give us the best fight of the night. Each of Brown’s last three fights has ended in a finish and he has been the victor in the last two. He got Warlley Alves to tap out and knocked out Bryan Barberena. It has been a good way to bounce back from losses to Niko Price and Belal Muhammad. Brown is 12-3 in his career with 12 of his 15 fights ending in some kind of stoppage.

Vicente Luque is giving up some size here. Brown has four inches on the favorite, but that hasn’t altered the odds too much, as Luque is still a comfortable favorite. Luque is a hard worker and that aggressiveness is expected to be a factor in this fight. His win over Niko Price last time out at UFC 249 was a vicious barrage and a big step in the right direction for the 28-year-old. Luque now has 10 knockouts and has only tapped twice. Brown hasn’t fought in a while, but Luque was able to stay sharp with that May fight. This one will have fireworks and has strong Fight of the Night potential, with Luque coming out on top.

<strong>Pick: Vicente Luque</strong>

<strong>Jennifer Maia (+132) vs. Joanne Calderwood (-152); Total: 2.5 (-400/300)</strong>

The only women’s fight on the card is the lead-in to the main event, as Jennifer Maia takes on Joanne Calderwood. Calderwood draws the favorite role here with wins in three of her last four fights, but this is her first fight in 2020. She last won by split decision over Angela Lee at UFC 242. It will be about focus here for Calderwood, who may have a bigger shot down the line against Valentina Shevchenko. Shevchenko is not ready to come back yet, so Calderwood wants to stay sharp against Maia.

This could be a “be careful what you wish for” scenario for Calderwood, as she has a lot to lose here. Maia is a dangerous opponent, as evidenced by wins over Roxanne Modafferi and Alexis Davis last year. She also lost to Katlyn Chookagian, a fighter that Calderwood also lost to at UFC 238. Calderwood should win here and she’s supposed to win here, but this is definitely a dangerous fight for her to take. She’ll have to be focused.

<strong>Pick: Joanne Calderwood</strong>

<strong>Derek Brunson (+260) vs. Edmen Shahbazyan (-310); Total: 1.5 (-115/-115)</strong>

This looks to be a bad matchup for 36-year-old Derek Brunson. He has a much more extensive resume than Edmen Shahbazyan and more fight IQ, so that could serve him well in this one. He’s coming off of a very efficient effort against Ian Heinisch at UFC 241, but that was way back in August of last year. He’s fought the best that this division has to offer and has held his own.

Shahbazyan has not, but the potential is oozing from the 22-year-old. Since making a statement on the Dana White Contender Series two years ago, Shahbazyan has won four times in UFC matchups, including the last three by first-round stoppage. Brunson has been knocked out five times, though the last two have been legends in Israel Adesanya and Jacare Souza. Shahbazyan has a long way to go to be discussed among those guys, but there is a reason why he draws a name opponent in Brunson here and this is a chance to put him over in hopes of a bigger fight in the fall.
