Illinois State Redbirds vs George Washington Revolutionaries NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 11/25/24

The 73rd NASCAR Cup Series season gets underway on Tuesday night with the Busch Clash and then continues on Thursday night with the Daytona Duels. We’ll take a look at the Daytona 500 in a separate article, but preview the Clash, the Duels, and the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season in this separate article.

The schedule looks a lot different this year and there are some team and rules adjustments that we need to tackle so that readers are ready for anything that gets thrown at them during the season.

We’ll start with the overall changes and then look at Tuesday and Thursday’s races.
<h3><strong><u>Schedule Changes</u></strong></h3>
NASCAR is trying to bring a more exciting product to its fans and viewers. Viewers have been bored with the standard 1.5-mile tracks where it comes down to the best equipment. This year, the drivers will run the Busch Clash on the Daytona International Speedway Road Course and the second race of the year, the Go Bowling 235, will be on the road course.

Homestead-Miami will follow as the third race of the year. The seventh race of the year will be the Food City Dirt Race at Bristol Motor Speedway, which has been transformed into a dirt oval for the first race at Thunder Valley. The second race will be the Night Race in the playoffs.

Other wrinkles include a race on the Road Course in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of the Americas on May 23. Nashville Superspeedway is a new track added to the rotation with the Ally 400 on June 20. There will be another back-to-back at Pocono on June 26-27. Road America, which has been used at the Xfinity Series level, will now be a Cup Series race on July 4 Weekend.

The race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be a Road Course race on August 15.

Dover is down to one date, with the Nashville date coming from one of the Delaware races. Kentucky Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway are not on the schedule, taking away a couple of 1.5-mile tracks. Atlanta Motor Speedway picked up one of the dates. Auto Club Speedway is not on the schedule because of COVID-19 protocols in California.

The All-Star Race has moved to Texas Motor Speedway, which now houses only one points race.
<h3><strong><u>Team &amp; Driver Changes</u></strong></h3>
Erik Jones is no longer with Joe Gibbs Racing. He’ll run for Richard Petty Motorsports in the 43 car. Bubba Wallace who was in the 43, is now in the 23 for 23XI Racing.

Ross Chastain will take over the Chip Ganassi Racing car that Matt Kenseth drove in his return last season.

Alex Bowman has moved behind the wheel of the 48, vacated by the retirement of Jimmie Johnson. Bowman is still with Hendrick Motorsports. Hendrick has also added Kyle Larson to its stable of drivers. He’ll drive the 88 of Bowman, which has been renumbered as the 5 car.

Clint Bowyer also retired. Chase Briscoe is now a full-time Cup Series driver in the 14 car for Stewart-Haas Racing.

As far as some crew chief changes, Chad Knaus has moved into an executive role for Hendrick Motorsports, so William Byron’s crew chief will now be Rudy Fugle, who comes over from Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Cliff Daniels, who was with Jimmie Johnson, is now Kyle Larson’s crew chief for Hendrick.

Ben Beshore is the new crew chief for Kyle Busch. Busch’s former crew chief, Adam Stevens, is now the crew chief for Christopher Bell.
<h3><strong><u>NASCAR Rule Changes for 2021</u></strong></h3>
NASCAR didn’t change much as far as the rules package. Darlington Raceway and Nashville Superspeedway will use the low downforce package.

Another rule change is that teams must run at least 16 points events with a short block sealed engine. The previous rule was 13.

Really, the majority of the changes for NASCAR have been related to the schedule. There is a new Next Gen Car coming in 2022, so it makes sense that NASCAR wouldn’t upset the apple cart too much this year.

The finale is at Phoenix Raceway again, so Kevin Harvick has to be the starting point for any handicap of the championship. Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin are also very worthy of sharing the co-favorite odds. It would be a surprise to see anybody outside of those three take down the title.

Those three drivers combined to win 21 of the 36 races last season. There are some new wrinkles to the schedule that could upset the balance of NASCAR, but those changes probably help Elliott and Hamlin because both are good road course racers. They may hurt Harvick, who is at his best on the oval tracks.

Brad Keselowski at +800 is about as far as I would go. NASCAR’s competitive imbalance makes it hard to take any long shots here. There really isn’t much value in holding your money into the month of November for a payout this low.

Ryan Blaney has the pole position for the 20-lap, 50-mile “All Out Sprint” with no points, but a big cash prize. The criteria for this year’s race was changed because qualifying was so limited last year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Busch Pole Award winners from the last five years, Busch Clash winners, Daytona 500 winners, Daytona 500 pole winners, playoff drivers, race winners, and stage winners are eligible, with only those that raced full-time last season. Hence the small field that we have here.

There are 14 turns on the 3.61-mile road course. It makes sense that Chase Elliott would be the favorite, as he has had plenty of road course success before. Rain has canceled this event several times before and rain is in the forecast virtually all week in Daytona Beach, so hopefully they can run this.

Elliott won the Go Bowling 235 last year on this track. Elliott won Stage 1 and then the full race. Denny Hamlin won Stage 2 and he’s the third favorite on the betting board. It is surprising to see Martin Truex Jr. listed second.

To me, Hamlin has some value at +800.
<h3><strong><u>Daytona Duels</u></strong></h3>
At time of writing, there were no odds on the Daytona Duels, but we can mention them quickly here. Joey Logano has won one of the two Duels each of the last two years. William Byron and Kevin Harvick are the others. It was Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott in 2018 and Elliott and Denny Hamlin in 2017.

The Duels are 60 laps each measuring 150 miles on the speedway track. The Duels set the starting grid for the Daytona 500, assuming they are able to be run, weather-permitting, so keep an eye on how this one goes.

The Phoenix Suns got balanced scoring in Game 1 and played a nearly flawless second half to jump out to a 1-0 lead on the Denver Nuggets. Bettors and oddsmakers took notice and certainly thought highly of the Game 1 effort, as this line has been bumped up to Phoenix -6 with a total of 222 at <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bookmaker/">Bookmaker Sportsbook</a></strong>.

Game 1 closed -6 after opening more like 4 or 4.5 at most places. Oddsmakers saw no reason to dispute what the market-moving money had to say about the first game, so the second game is lined exactly in that price range.

Let’s look at Game 2 and see if things will go any different for Denver.
<h2><strong><u>Denver Nuggets</u></strong></h2>
One thing that should go differently for the Nuggets is that Nikola Jokic should have a better game. The presumptive NBA MVP had 22 points, but was only 10-of-23 from the floor and only managed three assists. The Suns did a good job defending against him and he failed to get to the free throw line, so they did so cleanly as well.

The Nuggets actually only had six free throw attempts in the game to 20 for the Suns. Denver will need to be more aggressive and more assertive in the second game of this season. Aaron Gordon had a nice game from the floor with 18 points, but Michael Porter Jr. was just 6-of-13 and 3-of-8 from three. He was a big part of the reason why the Nuggets were able to outlast Damian Lillard and the Trail Blazers in the first round.

Porter didn’t get enough touches. It was almost as if the Suns figured that Jokic would get his and wanted to keep the supporting cast at bay. They seemed to lose Facundo Campazzo, who had 14 points, but if Campazzo is going to be forced to have that big of an impact, it means that something is not going well for the Nuggets.

Ultimately, Game 1 came down to two things. The first is that Denver didn’t defend well or communicate well enough on defense. The Nuggets allowed too many players to have too many clean looks. The second is that the Nuggets failed to get to the free throw line. The difference at the free throw line was 12 points. The difference in the final score was 17 points. Things could have gone a lot differently.
<h2><strong><u>Phoenix Suns</u></strong></h2>
The Suns have to be excited by the manner in which they won Game 1. Along with a .618 eFG% and a solid 13-of-34 night from beyond the arc, they won even though Devin Booker had the ball forced out of his hands. Phoenix played really unselfish basketball with 30 assists on 46 made field goals. Four players had 20 points, including the big 23-point night from Mikal Bridges, who was hit or miss in the first round.

Booker was 8-of-12 from the field for 21 points, so he was efficient with his scoring, but he deserves a lot of credit because he didn’t force the issue with his shot selection. Booker has a tendency to feel like he’s the only guy on the floor, which can lead to a lot of tough midrange jumpers. In Game 1, he was unselfish and it may have been his best all-around game of the postseason as a result.

It was also nice to see 11 assists from Chris Paul. Paul has dealt with some pretty uncomfortable aches and pains in the playoffs and has been on and off the floor. He had the 11 dimes, but also managed over 20 and was that calming, veteran presence that the Suns needed in their first game with heightened stakes.

What Phoenix did really effectively was what Denver tried to do. Nikola Jokic was forced into some bad, tough shots. That was the hope with Booker and the Nuggets defense, but Booker played a smart, sound game. We’ll see if Jokic is willing to spread the ball around more and make the Suns D work harder in tonight’s contest.
<h2><strong><u>Nuggets vs. Suns Free Pick</u></strong></h2>
The Suns have really found their stride in these playoffs. Maybe the Lakers weren’t fully invested and we know they weren’t fully healthy, but Phoenix played a strong game and everybody had a hand in what happened. A similar result in Game 2 will lead to a cover and the Suns have no reason to change what worked for them, whereas Denver may have to try something new that may or may not work.

Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles vs Marshall Thundering Herd NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 11/11/24

After a successful and spectacular pay-per-view card in front of a full complement of fans in Jacksonville, Dana White and the UFC head back to the UFC Apex training facility for this week’s UFC on ESPN 23 card with a main event of Dominick Reyes and Jiri Prochazka.

There were some questions as to whether or not White may host another event in Florida or maybe move one to Texas, but the event is at the Apex and will go down as UFC Vegas 25 in this historic and frustrating time. The next three Fight Night cards are at the Apex, with UFC 262 at the Toyota Center in Houston sandwiched in there.

Twelve fights are on the betting board for this one on Saturday May 1 and we’ll use the odds from <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a> to see what’s up.
<h3><strong><u>Felipe Colares (+117) vs. Luke Sanders (-137); Total: 2.5 (-140/110)</u></strong></h3>
Felipe Colares will try to break even on his first UFC contract in this matchup against Luke Sanders. Colares is 1-2 with a split-decision win over Domingo Pilarte and losses to Montel Jackson and Geraldo de Freitas by unanimous decision. Sanders, a longtime UFC fixture, returned from an 21-month layoff to lose to Nate Maness back in November by submission. The 35-year-old is a more aggressive fighter than Colares and the small Apex Octagon could play a role. I like Sanders to hold serve as a favorite.
<h3><strong><u>KB Bhullar (+195) vs. Andreas Michailidis (-230); Total: 1.5 (-135/105)</u></strong></h3>
KB Bhullar will look for his first career UFC win when he takes on Andreas Michailidis at 185 pounds on Saturday. Bhullar was 8-0 before making the leap to UFC, where he lost to Tom Breese by first-round knockout in his debut fight. It was his first fight in over a year, so maybe that played a role. Michailidis is also 0-1 with a KO loss in his UFC career that came at the hands of Modestas Bukauskas back in July. This honestly seems like a big number for Michailidis, who hasn’t done anything that stands out more than what Bhullar has done. The dog is worth a look here.
<h3><strong><u>Sam Hughes (+300) vs. Loma Lookboonmee (-400); Total: 2.5 (-300/240)</u></strong></h3>
The first of three women’s fights on the card features a big favorite in Loma Lookboonmee against Sam Hughes. Hughes has lost to the two best opponents she has faced. She lost to Vanessa Demopoulos last July in her first title fight and then lost to Tecia Torres by doctor’s stoppage in December. While Lookboonmee is only 2-1 in UFC and 5-2 overall, Hughes hasn’t done anything to warrant consideration here, even if she has a big size advantage in the fight. That said, -400 is a stiff price to pay.
<h3><strong><u>TJ Brown (+131) vs. Kai Kamaka (-151); Total: 2.5 (-200/160)</u></strong></h3>
After a winless 2020, TJ Brown is hoping to get back in the win column to start 2021. He’ll draw in against Kai Kamaka III in this featherweight fight. Brown got a contract from his Dana White Contender Series win over Dylan Lockard, but has disappointed since. Kamaka paid his dues in KOTC, Bellator, and LFA before getting his shot with a triumphant win over Tony Kelley. Unfortunately, a setback against Jonathan Pearce right after Thanksgiving has lowered his perception a bit. He was getting soundly beaten and dominated in that fight before eventually getting knocked out for the second time in his career.

This looks like a tough fight to bet, as Kamaka basically only wins by decision and the total is heavily juiced to the over. Most of Brown’s fights have ended in stoppages.
<h3><strong><u>Jonathan Pearce (+170) vs. Gabriel Benitez (-200); Total: 1.5 (-155/125)</u></strong></h3>
Jonathan Pearce, who put that beatdown on Kamaka, is up next against Gabriel Benitez. This is the third fight of Pearce’s contract and he’s 1-1 to this point with a loss to Joe Lauzon, but that emphatic win over Kamaka. Pearce is the bigger, rangier fighter here at six feet tall against the 5-foot-8 Benitez, but the smaller guy is the large favorite at -200. The ground game should be the difference here for Benitez. Pearce had takedown defense issues in the fight with Kamaka and Benitez has a much more polished ground game. He also has a lot of paths to victory with eight finishes, including one last time out.

The -200 price is a little bit big in some respects, but as a straight wager or a parlay piece, Benitez looks like a good one here.
<h3><strong><u>Randa Markos (+140) vs. Luana Pinheiro (-160); Total: 2.5 (-200/160)</u></strong></h3>
Things have not gone well of late for Randa Markos. She now has a losing record after her unanimous decision loss in November to Kanako Murata to fall to 10-11-1. She’ll try to get back to .500 here against Luana Pinheiro, a 28-year-old prospect making the leap up from the Contender Series. In her first fight in 361 days, she beat Stephanie Frausto to get a contract and her only career loss was an iffy split decision more than four years ago in her only AF fight.

The -160 price looks cheap here. While Markos is more experienced with a better list of opponents, she’s clearly finished in the UFC. Pinheiro is being gifted this matchup as a chance to get that first win and make some noise in a strawweight division that needs it. She’s a good parlay piece with Benitez.

<h3><strong><u>Luana Carolina (+235) vs. Poliana Botelho (-275); Total: 2.5 (-300/240)</u></strong></h3>
The women stay in the spotlight as the main card begins with Luana Carolina against Poliana Botelho. Carolina suffered her first UFC setback last July against Ariane Lipski in a submission loss. It seems like the type of loss that rocked market confidence in her because it was her first stoppage loss and also just an uncompetitive performance after a nice win over Priscila Cachoeira. The 27-year-old had won six in a row prior to that.

Botelho has lost two of her last three, but still gets the benefit of the doubt as the big favorite here. She lost back in October to Gillian Robertson after 18 months away from the Octagon. Was it the layoff or was it something more for Botelho, who turned 32 a couple months after that fight? I’m not sure, but one thing I am looking at here is the under 2.5 at +240 in this bout. Botelho has six career knockout wins. Carolina only has three stoppage wins out of six career victories, but she’s shown some good striking ability in her two UFC wins. It seems like a better gamble than a side here.
<h4><strong>Pick: Under 2.5</strong></h4>
<h3><strong><u>Cody Stamann (+215) vs. Merab Dvalishvili (-255); Total: 2.5 (-325/250)</u></strong></h3>
Cody Stamann accepted a very fast turnaround to fight Jimmie Rivera in July. It went as expected, as Stamann lost by unanimous decision. His win over Brian Kelleher was very emotional after the death of his brother and the quick turnaround proved to be too much. He should be in better physical, mental, and emotional shape here against Merab Dvalishvili, but still finds himself lined as a big underdog in the fight.

There isn’t anything overly exciting about Dvalishvili, who has won five straight, all by decision. He lost his first two UFC fights, but has rattled off five in a row now, including three in 2020. This is probably a better fight than the line suggests, as Stamann only has three losses and a draw to go with 19 wins, but Dvalishvili is 11-2 in his last 13 fights. He’s the pick here and maybe part of an open parlay or a parlay piece with Benitez and/or Pinheiro.
<h4><strong>Pick: Merab Dvalishvili</strong></h4>
<h3><strong><u>Krzysztof Jotko (+220) vs. Sean Strickland (-260); Total: 2.5 (-200/160)</u></strong></h3>
Krzysztof Jotko is back at it nearly one year removed from his win over Eryk Anders on May 16, 2020. Jotko has won three in a row to get back on track after a couple KO losses in 2017 and 2018. He doesn’t fight often, but when he does, there seems to be a lot of intrigue to his fights. The thing about the Anders win is that it doesn’t garner a lot of respect, as evidenced by this line.

It doesn’t hurt that Sean Strickland won two fights in impressive fashion at the tail end of 2020. His win over Jack Marshman came after nearly a two-year layoff and he won two weeks later over Branden Allen. Strickland showed that he still has a lot of quicks in that fight against Allen, especially with such a fast turnaround. None of his losses are particularly bad and he has a higher ceiling than Jotko. The -260 price is fairly cost-prohibitive here, but this feels like a chalky card.
<h4><strong>Pick: Sean Strickland</strong></h4>
<h3><strong><u>Dustin Jacoby (+127) vs. Ion Cutelaba (-147); Total: 1.5 (-105/-125)</u></strong></h3>
Dustin Jacoby has been a solid addition to the UFC roster. Jacoby actually made a couple appearances in 2011 and 2012 and lost in those UFC fights, but got another chance at redemption in August when he beat Ty Flores to secure a contract on the Contender Series. He’s won both fights since, with victories over Justin Ledet and Maxim Grishin. He’ll be drawing a really tough opponent here in Ion Cutelaba, but the reasonable line suggests that he’s gotten some helium with four straight wins, three of which have come under the UFC umbrella.

It doesn’t hurt that Cutelaba has struggled. He lost both 2020 fights to Magomed Ankalaev and also suffered a loss against Glover Teixeira in 2019. The thing about the Ankalaev losses is that he has been dominant. Those are less of a reflection on Cutelaba and more of a reflection on just how good Ankalev has been. Jacoby, while a great story, is not on Ankalaev’s level. This feels like a good bounce back spot for Cutelaba. If it isn’t, we can reassess. But I’m looking chalk again here.
<h4><strong>Pick: Ion Cutelaba</strong></h4>
<h3><strong><u>Cub Swanson (+133) vs. Giga Chikadze (-153); Total: 2.5 (-200/160)</u></strong></h3>
An underdog has to win at some point on this card, but I’m having a really hard time finding one. Maybe this will be the one. Giga Chikadze puts his seven-fight winning streak on the line against Cub Swanson. The 32-year-old scored a nice KO win over Jamey Simmons on the heels of four straight decision wins, two of which were split. While Chikadze has done what it takes to win, his fight against Simmons, which was on short notice against a UFC debutant, was the first time we really saw the striking power that gave him five knockouts before getting to UFC.

Cub Swanson is 37. His best days are in the past. At least he’s been back in the win column in his last two fights, but Kron Gracie and Daniel Pineda are not fighters that move the needle a ton. On the other hand, this will be Chikadze’s first fight against a highly experienced opponent with the cage IQ of Swanson. That could be problematic for a guy that hasn’t shown much finishing ability of late. I don’t love this pick, but Swanson’s +133 price is probably the better of the two sides.
<h4><strong>Pick: Cub Swanson</strong></h4>
<h3><strong><u>Dominick Reyes (+102) vs. Jiri Prochazka (-122); Total: 1.5 (-155/125)</u></strong></h3>
The main event of the evening comes from the light heavyweight division, where Dominick Reyes and Jiri Prochazka get together. Reyes has lost his last two fights, but he’s fought Jan Blachowicz and Jon Jones in those fights, so this looks a lot easier by comparison.

Prochazka was a star in Rizin FF for a long time and even the champion over former UFC champ CB Dollaway. His UFC debut was a spectacular one with a knockout over Volkan Oezdemir. Prochazka showcased all of his striking ability in that second round. Reyes also has a win over Oezdemir, but by split decision. You have a lot to unpack with this fight. Reyes has been challenged by the best the division has to offer. Prochazka took a long time to make the UFC leap and ultimately did so during the pandemic, so we’ve only seen one fight from him.

The main event looks to be far and away the best fight on otherwise lackluster card, but also one of the toughest to bet. Reyes has only been finished once, but we have a low total here. Rather than flip a coin on the winner, over 1.5 looks like the bet. Reyes should have a smart, patient gameplan here.
