You may have heard by now that Super Bowl LV is on Sunday February 7. You may have even heard that the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are this season’s two participants in the battle for the Lombardi Trophy. You may have even heard that Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady are the quarterbacks for their respective teams.

By the time SBLV kicks off, you’ll have Super Bowl fatigue. It’s a given. Every single matchup, every single angle about this game goes under the world’s largest microscope at some point. That isn’t a slight about the game or about the coverage. It’s simply that the last football game of the year gets a lot of scrutiny and a ton of attention.

It also gets a lot of scrutiny and a ton of attention from bettors and bookmakers. As a general rule, this is the sharpest line of the year. Actual bets and actual dollars shape the betting markets. Oddsmakers put up a number and the subsequent betting action makes the number what it is by smoothing out all of the rough edges.

This year’s line was particularly easy to set because these two teams just played in Week 12. Kansas City won the game 27-24 as a 3.5-point favorite. The total closed 56 and the box score suggests that there should been more than 51 points. The teams went 1-for-5 in the red zone and only scored 51 points despite 960 yards of offense.
<h3><strong><u>Super Bowl LV Betting Odds</u></strong></h3>
So what happened here? The line went up as Kansas City -3.5 and the total went up at 57, shaded to the over a little bit because of the first box score and also the fact that sportsbooks will be flush with over cash on a game of this magnitude with two well-known quarterbacks and lots of public investment.

A week out from the game, the line sits at -3 and extra juice on Kansas City at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a> with a total of 56. This line moved a little bit initially in favor of Tampa Bay and in favor of the under when it first came out. It basically hasn’t moved much since early last Monday. And it likely won’t move much.

Information is everything in the bookmaking process. The risk managers know that 3.5 is a buy point for Tampa Bay money and 56.5 or 57 are buy points for some sharper under money while waiting for the deluge of recreational bettors to pop in on the game beginning Friday or Saturday. It took mere hours for the sportsbooks to know exactly how the betting action was going to go here.

The one interesting thing about the Super Bowl odds is that the money line is often a point of value on the favorite. A lot of recreational bettors, either looking for rooting interest or seeing recent underdog trends, will “bet a little to win a lot” whenever possible. That means taking the plus money price on the underdog money line to win outright. Generally speaking, you wind up with a money line on the favorite that is lower than it typically would be relative to the spread on the game.

We haven’t seen that yet in this one because the books haven’t had to move much in that regard, but we could see Kansas City maybe hit -160 or so by kickoff. You’d generally see -165 to -175 with a three-point favorite otherwise.
<h3><strong><u>Kansas City</u></strong><strong><u> Chiefs</u></strong></h3>
The Chiefs are the road team here. This marks the first Super Bowl in NFL history when the host venue is also the home stadium of one of the participants. The Los Angeles Rams played at the Rose Bowl in Super Bowl XIV and the San Francisco 49ers played at Stanford Stadium in Super Bowl XIX. Those two teams were the closest we had gotten up until this point.

Frankly, though, with limited attendance because of COVID and the astronomical ticket prices associated with low supply and moderate demand, it shouldn’t be that big of a deal for the Chiefs. Honestly, if the Chiefs offense plays like it did in Week 12, I’m not sure anything will matter.

Kansas City racked up 543 yards on 72 plays and basically took the fourth quarter off. Kansas City fumbled inside the 10 with a chance to go up 24-0 in the first half. On the first drive, Andy Reid opted to kick a 19-yard field goal instead of going for it on fourth down at the one-yard-line. It very easily could have been a 28-7 game at half instead of the 20-7 game that it was.

The Buccaneers kicked a field goal on the opening possession of the second half and the Chiefs marched downfield to take a 27-10 lead. They didn’t score again and only had 38 yards on the next three drives as Tampa Bay had two turnovers and a touchdown. At the end of the game, the Chiefs got three first downs and burned 4:10 off the clock to secure the 27-24 win.

After the 75-yard touchdown drive, the Chiefs had 71 yards on their final four drives. Before they stopped trying, Kansas City had 452 yards on 51 plays. That was a story for the Chiefs throughout most of the season. They took a lot of fourth quarters off, much to the chagrin of bettors. Kansas City was a terrible ATS team during the season, even though they won several box scores in lopsided fashion.

The 543 yards in the first Tampa Bay meeting were a season high for the Chiefs. They dominated that game, but didn’t cover. They did the same against Denver in Week 13 and the same against the Browns in the Divisional Round.

Patrick Mahomes missed a game because the Chiefs sat everybody in Week 17. He finished the regular season with a 38/6 TD/INT ratio and a 66.3% completion rate. He was only sacked 22 times, which will be a key in this game. The defensive line for the Buccaneers may be the only hope of stopping this juggernaut of an offense. Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks from an escapability standpoint.

Nobody can match up with Travis Kelce and shut him down. If you try, Tyreek Hill will burn you. The numbers are really good for both guys. It would be overkill to list them. We all know it.

If there are flaws with the Chiefs, you’d point to the red zone defense first, which was the worst in the NFL in the regular season, allowing a touchdown 76.6% of the time. The other thing you would point to is the run defense. From a DVOA standpoint, the Chiefs rush defense was a bottom-five unit.

<h3><strong><u>Tampa</u></strong><strong><u> Bay</u></strong><strong><u> Buccaneers</u></strong></h3>
Can the Buccaneers exploit those two defensive weaknesses and make a real game of this thing? It sure is possible. The Bucs were seventh in TD% in the red zone with a bevy of weapons at the disposal of Tom Brady. You would think that with tighter windows and less zip on the fastball, Brady and the Bucs would have had some hiccups in the scoring areas, but they did quite well overall.

Brady wound up with a 40/12 TD/INT ratio for the season and completed 65.7% of his tosses. He’s had some ugly interceptions in the playoffs and has only completed 55% of his passes. He gave the Packers every chance imaginable to come back and win the NFC Championship Game, but the defense stood strong and the Packers had some drops and misfires.

Tampa Bay has won seven games in a row, including three games here in the postseason after only beating one playoff team (Green Bay) during the regular season. On the other hand, the Bucs trailed Atlanta big at halftime in Week 15 before turning things around. Minnesota left 10 points on the field in the kicking game in Week 14. The Lions quit in Week 16. The Falcons were no match in the rematch in Week 17 as they were playing out the string and the Buccaneers were vying for the fifth seed to get Washington in the first round.

Maybe some, possibly myself included, are being too hard on the Buccaneers. This was arguably the best run defense in the regular season. The Buccaneers had 25 takeaways in 16 games and have seven of them in three playoff games. Opponents only scored 1.89 points per drive against this Todd Bowles defense. The return of Vita Vea seemed to be a big help, even in limited action, as the Buccaneers sacked Aaron Rodgers five times and altered other throws with pressure.

The safety position is in the spotlight here for the home team. Both Antoine Winfield Jr. and Jordan Whitehead left the NFC Championship Game with injuries. They’ll be able to take full advantage of the extra week of preparation and likely play, but those are two huge injuries when talking about assignments with guys like Hill and Kelce.

Tampa Bay gets to the quarterback a lot. They had 48 sacks and 116 QB hits in the regular season. The concern here is that guys like Devin White, who was second on the team in sacks, might be needed more in a coverage or spy capacity. It will be interesting to see how Bowles, who excels as a defensive coordinator, plays it. The Bucs were third in Pressure% and fifth in Blitz% per Pro-Football-Reference during the regular season.

Offensively, the recent emergence of Leonard Fournette is a fascinating development. The play calling is what could be the separator and if there is too much Fournette from Byron Leftwich. The Buccaneers ran on first down 236 times for just 3.9 yards per carry. It was a big deal against the Packers, as they had very little early-down success, but converted a bunch of third downs to move the chains and score points.

On second down, the Bucs ran 105 times and passed 232 times. They only ran 26 times on third down and threw it 157 times. This is a very predictable play distribution for the Buccaneers. With two weeks to prep for the game, you know an elite planner like Steve Spagnuolo will focus on this quite a bit.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
One data point out of 18 or 19 may not be the best indicator of future performance, but it is really hard to look at the first meeting and not assume Kansas City does the exact same thing. The Chiefs left points on the field in that first meeting the red zone fumble and two short field goals.

The Buccaneers sustained some drives, but scored two touchdowns on drives of 75 and 73 yards in the fourth quarter when the game was all but decided. Maybe things go differently now and the Bucs have played really well since that Week 12 game. It still seems like Kansas City is the team to beat here and the -3, even at extra juice, seems like the side to take.

I’ll wait on the total and see if 57 comes around. While these are two great offensive teams and the yardage totals in the first meeting were very high, Spagnuolo and Bowles should both have excellent game plans here. I wouldn’t be shocked if we see a lower-scoring game. The Chiefs have struggled to score early in games and this one could be playing catch-up on the total throughout.

Air Force Falcons vs Northern Colorado Bears NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 12/16/24

A longstanding rivalry comes tonight on Sunday Night Baseball as the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals get together under the Busch Stadium lights to finish up their weekend set. It will be a matchup between Zach Davies and Adam Wainwright with the Cardinals in the -135 range at <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/jazzsports/">Jazz Sports</a></strong> with a total of 8.5 runs.

So far the teams have split the first two games, so we’ve got the rubber match tonight to consider. Let’s see which side will emerge victorious.
<h2><strong><u>Chicago Cubs</u></strong></h2>
The Chicago Cubs are right about where they’ve been ever since winning the World Series in 2016. Their offense has been decidedly league average or thereabouts, despite a lot of big names and guys that have high pedigrees. The Cubs enter play for this one ranked eighth in wOBA at .320, but have a 101 wRC+. With wRC+, a number of 100 is league average, so the Cubs are basically right there.

And that’s what we’ve seen the last several seasons. Chicago has one last kick at the can this season because impending free agents like Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Anthony Rizzo are all looking to go elsewhere, as the Cubs have become a dysfunctional front office with a billionaire owner crying poor. This group is playing for free agent dollars elsewhere, but also for one more crack at the postseason.

Bryant is off to an excellent start with a .307/.403/.607 slash and his trade value continues to skyrocket if the Cubs are not in the playoff picture as the July deadline approaches. Rizzo is off to a fine start as well with a .265/.377/.450 slash and more walks than strikeouts. Baez is also having a much better season than he had last year, especially in the power department.

Lately, as offense has crept up around the league, the Cubs have been part of that equation with a .342 woBA over their last nine games. They’ve cut down considerably on the strikeouts, as most teams have, and have had much better luck and better fortunes on their batted balls in play.

One guy not having a good season is Sunday starter Zach Davies. Davies has a 5.58 ERA with a 5.23 FIP in his first year with the Cubs. He, too, is an impending free agent. Davies has seen a massive drop in K% from 22.8% to 12% that also coincides with a big BB% jump from 6.9% to 11.5%. His Hard Hit% is also up to a career-high and his Barrel% is still concerning. Command and control have both faltered Davies this season.

Fortunately, the Cubs bullpen is much better than expected. The Cubs have a 3.10 ERA and a 3.62 FIP on the relief side over 177 innings of work. Chicago’s relievers have a high strikeout rate and a high walk rate, but they’ve kept the ball in the park and have stranded a high rate of runners.
<h2><strong><u>St. Louis Cardinals</u></strong></h2>
Despite making a lot more hard contact this season than in past seasons, the Cardinals offense still ranks in the bottom half of the league. Heading into this Sunday game, the Cardinals are 18th in wOBA at .306 and have a 95 wRC+, which means that they have been 5% below league average offensively. The Cardinals have one of the lower K% in baseball, but have just a .235 batting average to show for their efforts.

The Cardinals have a .304 wOBA at home. New Busch Stadium has never played as a great offensive ballpark. MLB installed a humidor there prior to this season and we haven’t seen too much of an impact on the offensive numbers as of yet. A lot of teams thrive in their home ballparks because their offenses are tailored to fit the dimensions or the conditions. That isn’t the case here with St. Louis, which is why a total of 8.5 is so interesting here.

Interestingly, when we break down this game, we see a Cubs offense that is well below average on the road. St. Louis has better road numbers than the Cubs. Obviously the Cardinals are at home here, so their numbers aren’t that important, but Chicago would be considered a better offense across the board, but what we see is the substantial impact that Wrigley Field has had on the Cubs. They aren’t at Wrigley Field tonight.

Adam Wainwright gets the call for the Cardinals in the series swing game. Waino has a 4.63 ERA with a 4.93 FIP on the season. He had a home run issue this year with nine of those across 46.2 innings of work. We’ve actually seen a few more strikeouts from him this year, but the homer has been his main problem. That being said, not surprisingly, Wainwright’s two worst starts have been on the road against Cincinnati and San Diego.

In 33 home innings, Wainwright has allowed just a .291 wOBA and has a 3.00 ERA. He’s allowed four homers at home and five on the road, despite pitching nearly 20 more innings at home.

The Cardinals bullpen is in the middle of the pack in a lot of categories. A high walk rate has been a big problem, but an emphasis on home run prevention has helped with the league’s lowest HR/FB% at 4.4%. All of St. Louis’s primary relievers worked yesterday to hold down a 2-1 win, so they’ll be pitching in a back-to-back situation tonight.
<h2><strong><u>Cubs vs. Cardinals <a href="http://bangthebook.com/mlb/">Free Pick</a></u></strong></h2>
Is this a spot where Davies can have some measure of success? The Cardinals offense is nothing special and the ballpark suppresses power and run scoring, even with the newly-installed humidor. We will have a lot of balls put into play tonight, which creates a high-variance environment, though the Cardinals are extremely good defensively and the Cubs are solid as well. It’s a tough handicap.

In the end, with what looks like a toss-up kind of game, the Cubs are at the plus money price and it seems like a 50/50 kind of matchup, so we’ll side with them in this one.

There are a lot of strategies when it comes to betting on sports. Some people take a high-volume approach because they feel like a lot of small edges add up to a much bigger advantage. Others bet a small number of games but a larger amount of money because they believe that one big edge is a better situation than a lot of small edges. Some people like to “chase the steam” and immediately follow along with the “sharp side”, based on line movement or the opinions of some of the industry’s most respected bettors. Others like to “fade the public”, which means that they will bet against the “consensus” opinion because the public loses over the long-term.

<a href="http://bangthebook.com/sports-betting-what-is-public-money/"><strong>Fading the public</strong></a> is also called contrarian betting. Technically, it doesn’t just have to be fading the public, because the public and the sharp side can sometimes be the same. It’s akin to playing the “Don’t Pass” line on a craps table. If you break down the house edges in craps, it’s actually better to play the “Don’t Pass” line rather than the “Pass” line. But, it’s hard to do that. Craps has a community feel. When everybody wins, everybody wins on the “Pass” line. Everybody is having fun. Who wants to be that guy that plays the small advantage to go against everybody?

It’s different with <strong>contrarian betting</strong> because you don’t have to look anybody in the eye when you are deliberately doing the opposite. The motto for a contrarian bettor would be, “It looks too good to be true”. Do this long enough and you’re bound to hear the phrase “public dog”. What this means is that the public, a group that collectively bets more favorites than underdogs, has found a team it loves that isn’t supposed to win the game. One of the best examples we’ve seen of this recently was the Green Bay Packers against the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship. The Packers were a five-point underdog most of the week, even though they had won eight straight games and Aaron Rodgers looked like a guy ready for a bust in Canton at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. As we know, the Falcons crushed the Packers and Atlanta wound up being the sharp side in that game. They also closed -6.5.

When too many people climb on board a team or an athlete in an individual sport, alarm bells start going off. Think about it. If you’re in a room with a lot of people, isn’t it a weird feeling when everybody agrees? Say you’re doing a group project at work or school and there are no dissenting opinions. Everybody is on the same page. Isn’t there that voice in the back of your mind that knocks on your skull and says, “Aren’t you missing something?”

Contrarian betting basically has the same type of mindset. The team that nobody wants to bet on is the team that the contrarian player is dying to bet on. There is a method to this madness. For starters, perception of these teams or individuals is very low. Because of this, oddsmakers often shade the lines a little bit on the team or player that everybody likes. It may be subtle, just an adjustment of the vig or a half-point here or there, but there’s already value built into the line on that undesirable betting option. For another thing, there’s probably going to be even more value on that side as betting action increases. The more action, the more the bookmakers need to adjust the lines. The more the lines adjust, the more value there is on the side that nobody wants to play.

Understanding bias is such an important part of being a handicapper. If the Milwaukee Brewers have lost seven straight games and were just beaten 11-2 by the Chicago Cubs, who is going to bet on them in the next game? The models for that game may have the Cubs listed as a -275 favorite, but oddsmakers open the game -300. The Brewers are playing the reigning World Series champions, have lost seven straight, and just lost by nine runs. Who wants to play them the next day? Throughout the day, the line climbs up to -340. Mr. Contrarian strolls up, dashing and debonair with his coiffed hair and designer suit, and plops a couple dimes on the counter on the Milwaukee Brewers.

Some people look at him and question his intellect. They’ll wonder whether or not he even cares about that $2,000, considering it’s less than his suit cost. But, Mr. Contrarian walks away knowing that he got 65 cents of value that should not have been there because nobody wanted to bet on the Brewers. The Brewers may win. They may not win. The one thing we cannot debate, however, is that Mr. Contrarian got the best of the number and that has proven to win more often than not over the long-term.

These are decisions that you are forced to make as a handicapper. It’s no fun losing and it’s no fun being an island, but it’s also not fun losing with everybody else. A lot of deep-pocketed professionals will subscribe to contrarian betting theories. It’s all about line value. It’s nearly impossible to get more line value than to bet on a team that nobody wants to bet on.

In this industry, we look for “buy points”. You try to buy low. You try to buy stock in a team that nobody wants to buy. Whether it’s simple variance or regression to the mean, those teams are generally going to improve. It’s harder to envision with a money line sport like baseball, but the Phoenix Suns aren’t going to get beat by 15 or more points every game over the course of a season. String together three or four of those losses and everybody throws that team away. Some bettors believe that is the time to buy.

The nice thing about sports betting is that there are a lot of approaches and a lot of ways to make money. Maybe contrarian betting doesn’t work for you. Maybe you don’t want to have to root for that bad team. Unders are usually the preferred total bets for professional handicappers. Why? Joe Public on his couch with a PBR tall boy and a bag of pork rinds is rooting for points. Oddsmakers and bookmakers know that Joe Public is rooting for points. It’s more fun to watch points. The percentage of <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sports-betting-what-is-sharp-money/"><strong>sharp players</strong></a> that oddsmakers and bookmakers are worried about is a lot smaller than the large percentage of public players that come in on the game no matter what. In a way, betting the under and the underdog are the simplest ways to be contrarian.

That’s not always the case. Sometimes the public will back an under or an underdog, in which case, sharp players generally go contrarian the other way. Sometimes, everybody is on the same page and a contrarian bettor will wait until close to kickoff, tip-off, or first pitch to get involved.

There’s no right or wrong way to handicap games, but there’s a wrong way to handicap the industry and that’s to not be aware of all of these different approaches and strategies. This is just one more for you to consider as you look to improve as a bettor and look to bang the books.

<p>Erceg is a worthy challenger in this fight, and he has proven that he has the skills to beat anyone. Fighting in his hometown will end up being a huge thing for Pantoga as that home crowd will give him an extra boost.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-aldo-back-in-co-main">Aldo Back in Co-Main</h2>



<p>Fans in Rio de Janeiro will get a nice treat on Saturday night as Jose Aldo will be making his return back to the Octagon. Aldo hasn’t fought in the UFC in nearly two years, but the odds suggest that he is going to fight well on Saturday night.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Jonathan Martinez is the slight favorite at -157 in this matchup of bantamweights, and he is on a trajectory to get a title fight soon. The home crowd will be going crazy for Aldo on Saturday night, but he has just taken too long away from the sport.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Martinez will make Aldo wish that he stayed retired as he will come away with a win in this fight.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There is a theme at UFC 301 as there are going to be plenty of top fighters from Brazil on the Main Card. Another of those top fighters is Vitor Petrino and he will be taking on Anthony Smith late in the night.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Smith looked like he was going to be a contender in the light heavyweight division, but he ran into some tough luck in his most recent event. That loss exposed some weaknesses in his fighting style, and Petrino should be able to take advantage of that in this one.&nbsp;</p>
