<h2>Arizona’s free fall continues </h2>



<p>The Arizona Wildcats (0-6; 2-4 ATS) are riding a horrible 18-game losing streak following a 34-0 defeat at the Colorado Buffaloes this past Saturday. They allowed just a couple of field goals in the first half, but the wheels fell off in the third quarter when the Buffaloes scored three touchdowns.</p>



<p>The Wildcats tallied 280 total yards and surrendered 365 in a return. They had 31 totes for 127 yards, while freshman QB Gunner Cruz went 13-of-22 for just 82 yards and an interception. Cruz suffered a season-ending thumb injury, so freshman Will Plummer finished the game for the Wildcats, who have already lost sophomore QB Jordan McCloud (knee, ankle) for the season.</p>



<p>In four appearances this season, Plummer has tossed for 380 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, completing just 50.7 percent of his passing attempts. The Wildcats are scoring only 14.0 points per game (tied-129<sup>th</sup> in the country) while surrendering 32.0 in a return (tied-105<sup>th</sup>).</p>

Covering an 18-point spread will be a tricky job for Washington, no doubt, but I cannot back this Arizona team that has lost three straight contests by 18 or more points.</p>



<p>The Huskies have some serious offensive problems, too, averaging just 115.2 rushing yards per game (107<sup>th</sup>). At least, their defense has been solid, and I’m expecting the Huskies to get things going against the Wildcats’ run D that surrenders 202.2 rushing yards per game (112<sup>th</sup>).</p>

Baseball bettors will be looking to start the weekend on a high note with 15 games on Friday. Fourteen of them will be under the lights, as the lone day game features the Pirates and Cubs. Our focus will be on the latest of the 15 games, as the San Francisco Giants get together with the San Diego Padres at beautiful Oracle Park.

The Giants are a home underdog here in this matchup between Blake Snell and Anthony DeSclafani. San Francisco is in the +125 range and San Diego is in the -145 range at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bookmaker/">Bookmaker Sportsbook</a> with a total of 7. We’ve seen a lot of low totals in baseball this season and this one certainly makes sense given the pitching matchup.

Let’s see what this NL West rivalry has in store for Friday night.
<h2><strong><u>San Diego Padres</u></strong></h2>
Getting a day off before a Blake Snell start is a very important thing. Snell has not been working deep into games, which means that the bullpen is called upon to get some big outs. Snell has only worked 25.2 innings over his six starts. They’ve been good starts with a 3.51 ERA and a 3.61 FIP, but a high strikeout rate and a high walk rate have led to a lot of deep counts.

Snell has struck out 37 and walked 15 on the season. He’s only allowed 23 hits, though his contact management numbers have gone down a bit. He’s already allowed seven barreled balls. He allowed 12 last season and that was a lot, given that he allowed 13 in 107 innings in 2019. Snell’s Hard Hit% is up to 37.5%, which is disappointing to see after such a big bump from 2019 to 2020 in that department.

Remember that the Tampa Bay Rays traded Snell, seemingly in his prime. Many felt it was financially motivated, but they may have seen these decreases in command coming.

The Padres offense has actually been bad this season. Despite a boatload of talent, San Diego entered Thursday’s off day sitting 23rd in wOBA at .298. They’ve actually walked a lot and have one of the lower strikeout rates in baseball, but have not hit for any power. They’ve only hit 30 home runs and have a .355 SLG on the season.

Manny Machado is off to a slow start. Tommy Pham is off to a horrible start. Ha-seong Kim is having issues adjusting to MLB pitching. Jurickson Profar has been bad. All of that has overshadowed good starts to the season from guys like Trent Grisham with a .361 wOBA and a 149 wRC+ and Fernando Tatis Jr., with a .401 wOBA and a 134 wRC+.
<h2><strong><u>San Francisco Giants</u></strong></h2>
Regarding offensive struggles, I present the San Francisco Giants. The Giants are actually 10th in wOBA and have a 99 wRC+, so they’ve been right around league average, but the one-year blip at Oracle Park seems to be a thing of the past. The Giants have a .313 wOBA at home with a .235/.332/.380 slash. San Francisco batted .272/.352/.485 at home last season with a .356 wOBA.

The baseball is playing way different than it did last season, but the Giants are back to normal at home now, so that proved to be a one-year outlier. While the Giants have worked around it this season and have spent more days in first place than anybody thought possible in a division with the Dodgers and the Padres, it is still something to think about as we go forward with this season.

Anthony DeSclafani is off to a fantastic start for the Gigantes. He’s worked 36 innings over six starts with a 2.00 ERA and a 3.10 FIP. There are some clear regression signs in the profile, like a .229 BABIP and an 87.2% LOB% to go with a 44.4% Hard Hit%, but hard contact has not been nearly as hurtful to pitchers this season as it has been in the past. DeSclafani is inducing a lot more ground balls than normal, a byproduct of some pitch location adjustments made by the Giants.

DeSclafani is on track for a career year in the swinging strike department and he’s also pumped in more first-pitch strikes than ever before. As long as he keeps pitching ahead and getting those whiffs, he should be able to mostly sustain this early-season start.
<h2><strong><u>Padres vs. Giants Free Pick</u></strong></h2>
The Giants have been able to win a lot of games in spite of a bottom-five bullpen. The Padres are fourth in bullpen FIP and the Giants are 27th. The Padres are fifth in bullpen ERA. Be aware of that if you are betting the full game here.

As erratic as Snell has been this season, and as short as his starts have been, he’s only allowed more than two runs once, including his two starts against the Giants. DeSclafani has not allowed more than three runs in a start. With the way Oracle Park is back to playing this season, the under looks like the way to go here.

After winning the first two contests of a four-game set against the Marlins, the Padres fell apart in Game 3. Their bullpen yielded five earned runs in the top of the ninth inning, while the Padres’ offense finished with just five hits.</p>



<p>Excluding Sunday’s closer at Petco Park, the Padres have scored only 15 runs over their previous five outings while posting a terrible .172/.289/.267 slash line. On the pitching side of things, the Padres have registered a 3.56 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and .216 batting average against.&nbsp;</p>



<p>MacKenzie Gore is expected to take the hill Monday, and the 23-year-old rookie is 2-0 with a sparkly 1.71 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in four starts and 21 innings of work in 2022. Last Wednesday, Gore tossed 5.2 innings in the second game of a doubleheader against the Guardians. The southpaw took a no-decision, allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks in a 6-5 defeat at Cleveland.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

The Rays, meanwhile, pushed the Astros to the brink, forcing Justin Verlander to go on three days rest in Game 4 and Gerrit Cole into action in Game 5. At this point, Verlander looks like the Game 2 starter and Cole looks like the Game 3 hurler. That would mean Zack Greinke in Game 1 and probably Wade Miley in Game 4, though we’ll have to see how that all plays out for AJ Hinch’s ballclub. It does mean that neither Cole nor Verlander will get three starts if the series goes seven games. That’s a win for New York.

You’ll find different opinions as to whether or not sitting around for several days is good for the Yankees. They didn’t have to play. They didn’t have to risk injury. They saved bullets from their starters and relievers. On the other hand, players are accustomed to playing. The only multi-day break from Opening Day until the final day of the regular season comes during the All-Star Break. Aside from that, players get a day off here or a day off there. The Yankees have to flip the switch, on the road, against a tough competitor in Zack Greinke on Saturday October 12, after having eliminated the Twins on October 7.

The Astros are favored in the -175 range for this one, with the Yankees in the +155 range. It’s fair to wonder what this line would have been had Verlander and Cole not been used in the ALDS, but this line has already come down a little bit as it is.

As storied as the Yankees are with their 27 championships, this is the first time since 2009-10 that the Yankees have made back-to-back ALCS appearances. Of course, they’ve only missed the playoffs four times since 1995, but it hasn’t been as easy in recent years. The Yankees have not made a World Series appearance since 2009. That’s what they will be going for in this series. The last time the Yankees went 103-59, they won the World Series. So there’s that.

In all seriousness, given the hellacious set of injuries this team overcame, a case can be made that this is the most battle-tested Yankees team in recent memory. This team lacks the starting pitching of past great teams, but the bullpen is exceptionally talented and this offense is outstanding. New York’s 943 runs were the most since the 2007 season.

The Astros are out to win their second AL pennant in three years. They won Game 1 in the ALCS against the Red Sox last season, but then lost four straight and watched the Red Sox win the trophy that they won in 2017. Houston’s 107 wins were the most in franchise history and a case can be made that this is one of the best teams ever, especially with some of the midseason acquisitions and call-ups. This is a really special group and this is a team that has won 311 games over the last three seasons. This Astros bunch also set a franchise record for runs scored. Last season, Houston set a franchise record for fewest runs allowed in a full season.

As has been my motif throughout the postseason, I’ll run through my three keys for this series:

Ironically, in the categories where the Astros and Yankees are not 1 &amp; 2, the Twins are usually one of the teams in between and the Yankees just got rid of them in three games. The primary difference is that Minnesota’s pitching staff is nowhere near Houston’s. With that being said, the Yankees have to hit in this series. I don’t know how, but they need to.

The Yankees were third in wOBA against right-handed pitching during the regular season and tied for second in SLG. They’ll see a ton of right-handed pitching for the Astros. The only regular lefties in the Yankees lineup are Brett Gardner and Didi Gregorius. Four lefties, if you include switch hitter Aaron Hicks, remain on the disabled list.

If we look more specifically at R vs. R plate appearances, the Yankees were second (to the Astros, of course) in wOBA at .349. Of course, they were also 16th in K%. A .323 BABIP and a lot of power production overshadowed the strikeouts.

I wouldn’t expect a lot of fastballs from Astros pitchers in this series, but it is worth pointing out that the Yankees led the league in wOBA at .318 in terms of righty vs. righty plate appearances ending on an offspeed pitch or breaking ball. The Astros were second, as you would expect. The Yankees also led all of baseball in R vs. R plate appearances that ended in a fastball at a wOBA of .385.

If there is a right-handed-heavy lineup that can overcome the hardships of facing Greinke, Verlander, and Cole for six of the potential seven games, it is the Yankees.

And that’s what they will have to do. It goes without saying that it would go a long way to winning this series if the Yankees could slow down the Astros bats, but that seems like a herculean task.

 	<li><strong> A Bullpen “Boone”</strong></li>
</ol>
The Yankees bullpen worked 13.1 innings and allowed just three runs against the Twins. The walks could’ve been a problem with seven of those, but 16 strikeouts helped. Perhaps most importantly, the Yankees starting rotation worked 13.2 innings and only allowed four runs and four walks. They struck out 19. Masahiro Tanaka was plenty good enough in five innings and Luis Severino managed four shutout frames. James Paxton struggled.

As you can see, the Yankees got almost as many outs from their relievers as they did from their starters. That is very likely to be the case in this upcoming series. Tanaka threw 83 pitches. Paxton threw 86. Severino threw 83. Paxton faced 20 batters in Game 1. Tanaka faced 19 batters in Game 2. Severino faced 17 batters in Game 3.

What do all three of those starts have in common? The Yankees starters did not see the middle of the order a third time. Paxton may not have even been pushed as far as he was in Game 1 had it not been the first game of the series.

The New York bullpen is going to be pushed to its limits in this series. That’s nothing new. The Yankees ranked 26th in number of plate appearances with a starter facing a batter for the third time. The Angels, Rays, Brewers, and Blue Jays were below them. The Yankees did use some openers like those other teams, but this is a team that also fully understands how good its bullpen is. After all, the Yankees allowed the fourth-highest OPS against at .906 in those third time through plate appearances. (For what it’s worth (a lot!), the Astros had the lowest OPS against in those spots at .642)

This is one example of why not playing more than three games against the Twins could be very beneficial for the Yankees. Their bullpen is in good shape. They have multi-inning options like Luis Cessa, Jonathan Loaisiga, JA Happ, and CC Sabathia that they can roster in this series. We’re also extremely likely to see an opener at some point in this series, as James Paxton really isn’t “pitch on three days rest” caliber with his injury history. Neither is Tanaka or Severino.

The bullpen is going to play an extreme role in this series. I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility to say that this group will have to get upwards of 125 outs in this series, if not more, between starters leaving early and an opener game. These are the guys that you would want to face the Astros. Four Yankees relievers ranked in the top 35 in FIP among 158 qualified RP. Zach Britton didn’t, but he had an ERA under 2.

Not all bullpens are created equal, as we know, but the Astros ranked fourth in OPS in their first plate appearances against a reliever. The Yankees were fifth.

The Astros bullpen is solid, but top-heavier than the Yankees unit. Roberto Osuna, Ryan Pressly, and Will Harris have been great all season long. The rest of the relievers have had their moments of struggle and strife. The long ball was a problem for several relievers, including Osuna at times. Chris Devenski was left off of the ALDS roster, due in large part to his home run issues. Josh James either gave up a home run, a walk, or finished with a strikeout. Brad Peacock struggled badly in 11 relief innings.

This is the one area where the Yankees have a concrete advantage. The Astros lineup is better overall and the rotation is decidedly better. The Yankees bullpen is deeper. As we know, that can be the difference in a playoff series.

 	<li><strong> Versus Verlander</strong></li>
</ol>
How the Yankees fare against Justin Verlander could very well decide this series. Gerrit Cole is the best pitcher on the Astros and the toughest matchup for the Yankees. Obviously Zack Greinke is solid in his own right and has the luxury of going righty vs. righty in most of his plate appearances, but he’s pitched to more contact with the Astros after coming over from the league where pitchers hit. The Yankees have the chance at getting to Greinke because their high K% against righties shouldn’t be as much of a factor.

Verlander, though, is the key. He’s the fly ball guy of the bunch. He’s the one that allowed 36 regular season home runs. The Astros could have the chance to make both of his starts at Minute Maid Park if he pitches Game 2 and Game 6, which would provide a big boost, as the park factor there is much better than the park factor at Yankee Stadium. The <strong><a href="https://www.theringer.com/2019/10/11/20909336/playoffs-new-ball-juiced-home-runs-dodgers-will-smith-lcs">postseason balls</a></strong> could help, too.

The Yankees led all of baseball in runs scored, but were 20th in plate appearances with a runner in scoring position. The Astros were second in both runs and PA with RISP. Even in a short series, it is impossible to overstate how much the long ball means to the Yankees. Fortunately, it’s hard to string innings together against the Astros and guys like Verlander and Cole. Unfortunately, altered baseballs could limit the power production. The Yankees manufactured quite a few innings with 23 runs in three games against the Twins and only five home runs, but the Twins pitching staff wasn’t in the same stratosphere as Houston’s.

That means taking advantage of Verlander and his prowess for giving up the long ball. Greinke is pretty good at limiting them. Cole actually has a higher HR/FB% than Verlander, but he gave up seven fewer HR and he gave up 12 to right-handed batters, whereas Verlander surrendered 17.

From a line value standpoint, the Yankees are worth considering here. They are not as good as Houston in every facet of the game, but the bullpen is enough of a potential equalizer to consider the +155 or so price tag. Aaron Boone will manage aggressively. His starters will not see the lineup a third time through. How the Yankees put together enough outs from their relievers to outlast the Astros remains to be seen, but they have enough relief weapons to figure it out.

If the Yankees can steal Game 1, you’ll get a better price on Houston, even with Verlander and Cole coming in Games 2 and 3. If the Yankees can’t get Game 1, the Astros will be a much, much greater favorite, since that will require the Yankees beating Verlander twice, Cole twice, or one start from each at the very least.

I do think that the Astros move on. I also think that the winner of this series wins the World Series. I think the line is a little bit heavy on the Astros.

Rather than lay the -175 with Houston, I’d just go ahead and take Houston to win the World Series at the best price you can find in the +125 or +130 range. They’ll be a substantial favorite over either NL team. The same can really be true of the Yankees in the +250 range.

For my money, no offense to Cardinals and Nationals fans, this is the World Series.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have never been part of a conference. They’ve played a lot of big games as an Independent program and a national powerhouse, but to say that the game on November 7 against the Clemson Tigers is up there with some of their other marquee matchups is an accurate statement.

This is not a College Football Playoff elimination game by any means for Clemson, but it would be for Notre Dame if they are unable to upset DJ Uiagalelei and Dabo Swinney in South Bend. The line has bounced around in the “dead zone” between -4 and -6 throughout the week, as bettors are trying to figure out what Trevor Lawrence’s absence means to the line.

<a href="http://bangthebook.com/s/bovada"><strong>Bovada Sportsbook</strong></a> is among the operators at -6 with a total of 50. <a href="http://bangthebook.com/s/bookmaker"><strong>Bookmaker Sportsbook</strong></a>, known for taking sharper action than some of their colleagues, is sitting on -5.5 with the total at 50.5.

The fact of the matter is that there is a great unknown in this game and that is Uiagalelei. The freshman heir apparent to the QB throne in upstate South Carolina came all the way across the country from California to play for the perennial power. He’s got excellent size at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, but it is fair to wonder how big and bright the moment is here for the kid. After all, he had 19 career pass attempts, 11 against The Citadel, before stepping in on short notice last week because Lawrence contracted COVID-19.

Uiagalelei was 30-of-41 for 342 yards with a couple touchdowns and a rushing score. He had six carries for 25 yards. DJ’s bruising size could be a weapon for Clemson down the line, but don’t expect to see the big man carrying the mail a lot here with even bigger questions down the depth chart in Lawrence’s absence. If nothing else, a spotlight game of this magnitude is a great lid-lifter for some of the games he’ll be expected to play in when Trevor Lawrence is a member of the New York Jets.

As smart quarterbacks do, Uiagalelei relied heavily on Travis Etienne in his first game. Etienne ran the rock 20 times for just 84 yards, but had seven catches for 140 yards. Getting Etienne 20+ touches a game sure seems like a recipe for success and he’s been used more as a receiver this season.

While the numbers ended up being impressive for Clemson, they did trail Boston College 28-13 last week prior to outscoring the Eagles 21-0 in the second half. That won’t fly against a much better Notre Dame team. We’ll see if it was nerves or an off half for the defense of Brent Venables or what.

While Uiagalelei, Etienne, and the offense will get a lot of the talk, it may be the Clemson defense that has to prevail here. The undefeated Irish have enjoyed a 7/1 TD/INT ratio from senior signal caller Ian Book, also a California native. Kyren Williams had led a ground game with 5.1 yards per carry on the season. Williams has 5.7 yards per pop and seven of the team’s 18 rushing scores. Book has been an effective scrambler with five rushing touchdowns on his 51 attempts.

The problem for Notre Dame in this game, however, is that they rank 32nd in yards per play. While Clemson’s offense only ranks 24th, a noticeable drop from last season’s fourth-place mark in that department, moving the ball methodically without big plays is a tough way to upset the #1 team in the country.

When we think back to how Nick Saban’s teams lost, it would be to teams that had fast, athletic skill players and quarterbacks that could improvise like Johnny Manziel or Bo Wallace. While Book has run around a little, he’s not a dual-threat guy. While the Fighting Irish are good, they are not Ohio State or last year’s Clemson team. They are not even the 2017 Clemson team.

Notre Dame is 11-32-1 ATS since 1994 against teams that finish in the AP Top 10. It’s a large swath of time, and there haven’t been a lot of those games lately, but the Fighting Irish are a solid, non-elite team. Athletically, they don’t stack up with the SEC and ACC teams. Whether that is a byproduct of higher admission requirements or geography, these are games they lose because they are simply out-talented.

My expectation is that this game plays out the same way. Notre Dame runs a pretty traditional offense and you can’t go one-on-one against the players in the Brent Venables defense and win enough of those battles. If the crowd noise was cranked to 11 and Uiagalelei was making his first road start in a hostile South Bend environment, that might be an equalizer. It won’t be, so it isn’t.

Clemson is the play.
