It would have seemed a longshot for the Portland Trail Blazers to elevate themselves to a playoff spot, but you couldn't blame some BetAnySports customers for giving them a better chance then the other Western Conference teams who were on the outside looking in at the bubble. After all, they were getting healthier. And they have a backcourt that matches just about anything else in the NBA when it comes to firepower.

But even the team's biggest boosters may not have figured how much firepower they'd really get. So as they enter the post-season as the eighth seed, much of the talk is about whether they can actually pull an upset over the #1 team in the West. And it makes things much more interesting as they get things going against the Los Angeles Lakers.

What Damian Lillard has been able to accomplish in the seeding games has been super-human. That's not an exaggeration. As this Portland team had to keep winning in order to keep playoff hopes alive, he responded with 112 points in two games, including a career-high 61-point explosion against Dallas, and you could only imagine what kind of eruption there might have been in the Moda Center.

The pressure was two-fold; not only were there the Memphis Grizzlies ahead of them, which meant that they might have to sweep a two-game play-in, but they also had a rampaging Phoenix Suns team on the charge, as they won all their games.

Ultimately, the Blazers overtook Memphis for seventh place, beat the Grizzlies in the play-in, and after going 6-2 in the bubble, are considered to be a "dangerous" squad for the Lakers to face.

Where Lillard - and for that matter, his backcourt mate, CJ McCollum - become an even bigger problem than normal for the Lakers is that Los Angeles is missing Avery Bradley and Rajon Rondo, who are potential defensive stoppers. The Blazers are better up front than they were before the work stoppage, and it's the possibility of balance that will bring even more of a challenge to the favorites. Jusuf Nurkic is one of the more talented centers (offensively speaking) and Zach Collins was welcomed back from injury. But Collins is going to have to sit out early in this series.

Could it be that Carmelo Anthony has a last hurrah in him? He can still score 20 on any given night, but this isn't a team that is starved for that kind of production.

What they will need is a defensive solution, especially against LeBron James, who may not be the leading scorer for the Lakers, but is still the focus of the offense. You can count on them trying different people with different looks against him. Anthony doesn't necessarily provide answers in that regard, but they'll throw somebody like Nassir Little at him as well. They'll go small on occasion with Gary Trent.

But they may also go big. Collins' absence will give Hassan Whiteside extra minutes, and let's not forget that when he is right, he is a premier rebounder (13.5 per game) and shot-blocker (2.9 per contest).

Because Lillard is simply red-hot, the Blazers have the possibility of being in every game. They may win one or two in this series, taking advantage of the Lakers' absences in the lineup.

NBA Picks & Predictions -- Blazers Look Like a More Well-Rounded Crew Now

The importance of the bowl season greatly varies from program to program. Some schools have had lots of opt-outs and complete no-shows already this year. Other programs are thrilled to have the opportunity to play another game. Ball State and San Jose State should be two of those programs.

They’ll square off in the Offspeed Arizona Bowl from Tucson on Thursday December 31. San Jose State has grown into a 9.5-point favorite with a total of 64 in this matchup between the Mountain West Conference champ and the MAC champ at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a>.

We’ll break it all down in this one and suggest a pick or two on the second-to-last game of 2020.
<h3><strong><u>Ball</u></strong><strong><u> State</u></strong><strong><u> Cardinals</u></strong></h3>
We’ve had way too many bowl games this season when motivation questions and looming opt-outs ruled the day. Ball State is simply worried about what’s in front of them and that is the Arizona Bowl. This is a program that hasn’t played in a bowl game since 2013. That was a loss to Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. Ball State is 0-7 all-time in bowls.

That means that this program can do something it has never done before. Fifth-year head coach Mike Neu faced long odds in the MAC Championship Game against Buffalo and his team prevailed 38-28 to win as a 12-point underdog. It was the biggest outright upset win for the Cardinals since Week 7 of the 2011 season when they upset Ohio as a 14.5-point pup. They also upset Toledo in what was a double-digit dog role earlier this season at some sportsbooks.

There are a lot of reasons why bettors have opted to back the other side. Ball State did get some fine QB play from Drew Plitt with a 16/6 TD/INT ratio and a completion percentage approaching 66%, but the Cardinals will be without leading rusher Caleb Huntley, who opted out to prepare for the NFL Draft. Tye Evans is a step down with 4.6 yards per carry to 5.5 for Huntley. Huntley had half of the team’s 12 rushing touchdowns.

The biggest reason why Ball State has been bet against is because bettors are worried about their statistical profile. They were outgained on a yards-per-play basis over the course of the season with 5.82 yards per play on offense and 6.05 yards per play allowed on defense. In fairness, Ball State was a run-heavy team, so that skewed things a little on offense, but the pass defense was not great and allowed a lot of chunk plays. Ball State allowed 24 pass plays of 20 or more yards in just seven games.

<h3><strong><u>San Jose</u></strong><strong><u> State</u></strong><strong><u> Spartans</u></strong></h3>
From early on, it felt like San Jose State could be considered a team of destiny. While the ceiling was a Mountain West Championship and a decent bowl game, they looked the part from day one. They went 7-0 straight up and had six ATS wins, depending on the line you had for the UNLV game on November 14. They paired an excellent and dynamic offense with a spectacular defense. San Jose State amassed nearly 6.9 yards per play on offense and allowed just 4.84 yards per play on defense.

Both marks ranked in the top 15 nationally. A strong case could be made as well that the Mountain West Conference was clearly superior to the MAC, so a +2 YPP differential in the harder of the two conferences would certainly be enough justification for a line move up from -7 to a line approaching -10 at some places.

Nick Starkel posted a 16/4 TD/INT ratio with a 65% completion rate in his first season after transferring from Arkansas. Tyler Nevens wound up one of the best backs in the nation on a per-carry basis with 8.1 yards per pop and Bailey Gaither is probably the best receiver you’ve never really heard of in college football. He has a great chance to play at the next level, much like his head coach Brent Brennan did.

Like Ball State, bowl appearances are hard to find for San Jose State. They haven’t been in one since 2015 and only have three since 1990. Last season, SJSU went 5-7 to fall one win short of a bowl, but lost games by three to Nevada, two to Hawaii, and three to UNLV. This has been a long time coming for the seniors and other upperclassmen with this program.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
It’s nice to finally have a bowl game where we can just look at the black and white. So many bowl games have had so many grey areas on the motivation side. In this one, both teams are extremely happy to be playing another game and each team has the chance to do something special that will stand out in program lore.

Tucson, Arizona is also at a little bit of elevation, measuring around 2400 feet above sea level. San Jose State should be better equipped for that because of the conference they play in.

One really key metric here is sacks. Each team played seven games. San Jose State allowed seven sacks. Ball State allowed 24. The Spartans had 22 sacks in their seven games and Ball State had 16. Add in the yards per play difference and the relative strength of the two conferences and you can see why SJSU has taken the money.

I’ll look that way as well, with a San Jose State squad that is well-coached and has the far superior defense.

<h5><strong>“More Like One in a Million”</strong></h5>
So you’re telling me there’s a chance! Kyle Busch has won this race six times in his career. For good measure, he’s won the fall Xfinity Series race four times. That’s 10 career wins at the Xfinity/Nationwide level at ISM Raceway for one of the sport’s all-time greats.

He’s in the field this week and he’s a -140 favorite. While this isn’t the biggest price we’ve seen on Busch for an Xfinity Series race, it is still pretty eye-opening. Busch’s win last week was his 93rd career Xfinity Series win in 346 races. In other words, he’s won more than a quarter of them and a lot of them in recent years.

That being said, Busch only won once in his seven starts last year. He didn’t waste any time this year, but last season, though he did lead the most laps in two races he didn’t win, he was only 1-for-7. He was 5-for-10 in 2017 and 10-for-17 in 2016. He also led the most laps in three races that he didn’t win.

Maybe he returns to his 2017 and 2016 levels of dominance. Maybe he doesn’t. The odds this week certainly suggest a return to past form.
<h5><strong>The Other Hopefuls</strong></h5>
Christopher Bell, who won the fall race last year, is +375. Justin Allgaier, who won this race back in 2017, and Cole Custer are +750. Tyler Reddick is +1150. Nobody else is lower than +2750. Bell really is the class of the Xfinity Series once again this year. Allgaier is the crafty vet and a perennial threat. Custer’s inconsistency makes it tough to fully buy stock in him this season.

Reddick’s prices are too influenced by winning the finale at Miami-Homestead last year. Aside from his two wins to begin and end the season, he only had five other top-five finishes. Maybe that’s good enough with this year’s crop of drivers, but he won’t get the nod from me in too many write-ups this season. He did win the second stage last week at Las Vegas, but also finished 15th.
<h5><strong>ISM Need-to-Knows</strong></h5>
This dogleg oval features different banking in the four turns and checks in at 1.022 miles in length. Some reconfigurations were done to the track over 2017 and 2018 and last year’s fall race was the first one on the inverted course. Most races tend to run pretty smoothly here, but the average speed in the 2017 race was just 91 mph, so that was a race with a lot of cautions and a lot of problems. Things got back to normal a bit for last year’s race, which Brad Keselowski won.

This is the second race in a row in drier conditions, so the teams should have a better idea of tire wear and all of those sorts of issues. Early in the season, we’ve seen a lot of problems with pit crews, pit penalties, and just an overall uncertainty from a lot of teams. As the season goes along, we should see some sandpaper taken to those rough edges, but it’s still the early part of the season, especially for Xfinity Series teams, who didn’t have the luxury of the Clash or the Duels to get ready.
<h5><strong>Supra-stars</strong></h5>
I wondered aloud about how Busch would do last week going from the Camry to the Supra. It didn’t seem to bother him at all. Toyota is 2-for-2 so far in non-restricted races, with Bell’s win at Atlanta and Busch’s win at Las Vegas. Brandon Jones had two top-five finishes before finishing 28th last week.

Outside of that, Chevy has had a lot more Xfinity Series success than Cup Series success thus far. Custer, who is second in points, runs a Ford, but Michael Annett won the NASCAR Racing Experience 300 in a Chevy. Tyler Reddick, John Hunter Nemechek, and Allgaier all run a Chevy. Noah Gragson, who ran third last week at Las Vegas, is also driving a Camaro. Austin Dillon was fourth last week in a Camaro.

Toyota looks to have a leg up on the field overall, but Chevy is its closest competitor in the Xfinity Series, which is a major departure from what we see right now in the Cup Series.
<h5><strong>Picks</strong></h5>
Finding somebody other than Kyle Busch to win this thing is a chore, but it is not a long-term winning strategy to lay prices in stock car racing. Bell is the best of the bunch for points drivers and he would likely be +175 or so if Busch wasn’t in the race. There’s some value on him this week.

Justin Allgaier is the only other play I’d look to make. Allgaier has been fourth, first, and second in this race and has led the most laps each of the last two years. Hold a +375 and a +750 and hope one of those guys knock off Busch.
