Instead, sportsbooks can set a line, like -400 on the Cavs, where you would win $100 for every $400 that you bet.

The amount that you pay in vig will change the percentage of success that you need to break even. At the standard -110 vig for a regular spread bet, the break-even percentage is 52.38 percent. You would have be on the correct side more than 52.38 percent of the time to make money if you were betting the same amount on every game. If you took an added vig price of -115, you would need a 53.49 percent success rate to break even. The break-even rate changes with every variation to the vig.

In money line sports, some bettors have no problem betting -150 favorites. To break even betting -150 favorites, you need a success rate of 60 percent. In the above example with the Cavaliers and the Nets, assuming a -400 money line price, you would need an 80 percent success rate to break even.

Based on this concept of vig, let’s assume 10 bets, made with the idea of winning a $100 profit:

Out of these 10 bets, you have a 7-3 record. If we assume a wager to win $100 on each bet, the total amount bet is $1500. The amount won is $735. The amount lost is $680. You went 7-3 on your bets, but you only made a profit of $55 out of $1500 worth of bets. Why? Because of the vig. You lost a -350 play and a -215 play. That was a combined loss of $565.

Professional handicappers shoot for numbers in the 55 to 56 percent range over the long-term on spread wagers. Anything better than that is a very good living. Anything in the 53 to 54 percent range is very decent. Anything below is barely breaking even or worse. It’s still called gambling. There’s a lot of variance in sports outcomes.

The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, is one of the most important non-grand-slam tournaments of the season, both on the ATP and WTA Tours. The ATP 1000 outdoor hard court tournament attracted all of the top 32 players in the world, each of which earned an automatic bye into the second round.

With the exception of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who was shockingly eliminated in the Round of 32, things have mostly gone as expected with three of the same semi-finalists as the 2023 BNP Paribas Open.

Here's a look back at the early round results and a preview of what to expect this weekend.
<h2>Early Rounds Recap</h2>
Djokovic needed three sets to win his first match against Aleksander Vukic and looked surprisingly human in his third-round match against Luca Nardi. The Italian, who only earned a spot in the tournament as the lucky loser, beat Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Nardi lost in the fourth round to Tommy Paul, who is one of the four semi-finalists this year.

Paul will take on Russian Daniil Medvedev in one of the two semi-finals on Friday. Medvedev, a runner-up in last year's BNP Paribas Open, has dropped just one set while beating Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune, and Sebastian Korda.

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 3 and No. 2 players in the world, respectively, meet in the other semi-final. Sinner has yet to lose this season and could move into the world No. 2 spot with a win over Alcaraz, who won last year at Indian Wells. Alcaraz is coming off an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win over Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals, while Sinner beat Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-3 in the quarters.

<strong>Daniil Medvedev (-260) vs. Tommy Paul (+220)</strong>

Medvedev is 2-0 in two career matches against Paul and should improve to 3-0, despite the fact Paul is playing some of the best <a href="https://www.bangthebook.com/tennis/">tennis</a> of his career right now. The American won his second career ATP Tour title this season and also reached another final, but Medvedev beat him 6-2, 6-1 last September at the China Open in Beijing.

<strong>Carlos Alcaraz (+120) vs. Jannik Sinner (-140)</strong>

This will be the ninth match on the ATP Tour between Alcaraz and Sinner and they've split the first eight. Sinner, however, has won each of the last two matches, both of which were in 2023, and is a remarkable 16-0 this season. He won the Australian Open and ABN AMRO Open and has only dropped four sets in those matches. He's 2-2 in four career matches against Alcaraz.
<h2>Final Betting Prediction</h2>
While a rematch of last year's final at Indian Wells (Alcaraz vs. Medvedev) is entirely possible, it's hard to bet against Sinner right now. The Italian led his country to a Davis Cup victory in late 2023 and has been literally unbeatable since, going 16-0 in 2024. A Medvedev-Sinner final would be a rematch of the 2024 Australian Open final, which Medvedev lost after winning the first two sets. Should they meet, he would be especially motivated to get the job done.

Ben Simmons also contributed 12 points, with 5 coming in the 2nd quarter.</p><p>The Nets put together a strong defensive performance on Thursday, holding the Raptors to just 94 points. Brooklyn was especially effective in the 4th quarter, where they allowed only 18 points. Overall, the Nets limited Toronto to 39% shooting from the field.</p> <p>From beyond the arc, the Raptors hit 15 threes on 34% shooting. Brooklyn sent Toronto to the line 14 times, where they made 11 free throws. The Nets also recorded 38 defensive rebounds, gave up 10 offensive boards, and added 6 blocks.</p>

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>THE WGC-HSBC CHAMPIONS PREVIEW</strong></span>

This week the players head to China and the Sheshan International Golf Course for the World Golf Championship – HSBC Invitational. WGCs typically sit just behind major tournaments in terms of prize money and field strength. This final WGC event of the year is no different in terms of potential winnings, but due to it being situated in the swing season the field is considerably weaker than typical WGC events. With that being said we will see Rory, along with past champions Rose and Schauffele out of those in the Top 10 in the world. To be clear, this is by no means a weak field and is far stronger than the previous two Asian Swing events. Deki, Casey, Finau, Fleetwood, Reed and Scott round out a solid group of favorites. We will also see Spieth on a tree lined golf course which usually equals a nice week in head to heads. With that said, let's take a look at Sheshan International. It is also important to note that a lot of the players competing this week will be coming over from a Euro Tour season that has by no means shut down. Make sure you check current form from those events prior to staking any wagers against players who predominantly compete across the pond.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>COURSE PREVIEW</strong></span>

The Sheshan International course is a pretty standard par 72, measuring out at 7,261. Apparently ShotLink doesn’t exist during the Asian Swing, so strokes gained data from past renditions are not available. What is clear is that Sheshan will give up a ton of birdies as winning scores have come in anywhere from 14 to 24 under. The winners list suggests that a top flight player will be successful this week with Xander, Rose, Deki, Watson, DJ, Kaymer, Molinari and Phil being 8 of the last 9 winners. The course features 4 par 5s, all easy and reachable along with a drivable Par 4 at the 16th. The weather looks ton be dry, sunny and calm so I expect another week of low scores.

The greens here are Bentgrass and are, as stated in prior previews, the most preferred surface on Tour. Sheshan’s greens are slightly smaller than Tour average, without dramatic undulations that are often seen. They have played soft in past years, susceptible to approach shots and run anywhere form a 11.5 to a 12.5 on the Stimpmeter. While it is hard to predict who will have the hot putter week to week, it will be important to get it close in order to have plenty of birdie opportunities on these relatively easy greens.

The tree-lined fairways at Sheshan will require players to keep it in play, and the statistics from previous renditions suggest that it is harder to hit these fairways than the average Tour event. Once in the fairway on the Par 4s, players will be playing short irons and wedges into greens. This means length along with driving accuracy will be important over the 4-day no cut tournament.

I have to admit, without strokes gained data from the previous two Asian Swing events and form data due to few of these guys not playing much since the end of the 2019-20 Season this isn’t the worst tournament to take off. There is also zero chance that stops me from looking for a winner so onto the plays!

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>THE PLAYS</strong></span>

<strong>Corey Conners +6350</strong> – Conners notched a win this year way back in April at the Valero Texas Open and after a bit of a rough stretch seems to has regained his form. The thing I love most about Conners this week is that he has played in the previous two Asian Swing events, finishing 6th and 12th, meaning he is completely acclimated to the time change. Throw in a 13th at the Safeway prior to heading overseas and that is three straight T15 finishes. That 13th at the Safeway came on the back of gaining 5 Strokes on Approach and while there isn’t SG data available for his past two finishes, the fact that Corey is 7th on Tour in SG: APP in 2019 makes it easy to surmise how he came upon success the last two weeks. On a course where hitting it close is paramount, getting a previous winner this year at 60/1+ with those proven iron skills is too short a price to pass up.

<strong>Ian Poulter +7550</strong> – Sticking with the theme of recent success in Asia, Poulter is extreme value here. A 13th and a 16th finish the last two weeks for the multiple worldwide winner follows the same logic in respect to acclimation in Asia as Conners. While I am by no means a course history truther, when there is a lack of strokes gained data it is necessary to look closer and Poulter’s history at Sheshan is difficult to ignore. He has never finished outside the top 30 in this event (ignore his win here as it was at a different track), including multiple top 10s. Considering his price alongside

<strong>Erick Van Rooyen Top 20 +180</strong> – With a small 78-man field the Top 20 market is very much squeezed this but I’m happy to grab an absolute bomber at close to 2/1. Van Rooyen will absolutely gain strokes off the tee this week as he is one of the longest players in the world. His experience amongst PGA players this year is somewhat sparse, but between the Canadian Open, PGA, U.S. Open and British he has gained almost 15 strokes on approach. The issue is Van Rooyen sucks at putting, but if you’ve ever read here you know my soft spot for bad putters. If he brings his Major game to China, he easily has enough to compete with the best.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>THE MATCHUPS</strong></span>

<strong>2u Cam Smith (+100) o Jordan Spieth</strong> – I foreshadowed this play in the intro and Spieth on a course with trees is an auto fade. Spieth threw together a very respectable 8th in Korea at the CJ Cup event, a course where you can absolutely spray it off the tee. That was followed up by a 66th last week which basically equals DFL when you count all the auto exemption guys that got a spot in Japan. Given his finish it is no shocker that the Zozo penalized wayward drives. Spieth simply cannot find the fairway right now. Along with fairways, Spieth seems to be trying to find his game as a whole considering this is his 3rd appearance in a row, a scheduling situation usually reserved for the most fringe Tour players during the Swing Season. While Cam Smith is not the most exciting player to back in a head to head, there is a bit of solace to be taken in the fact that he finished 3rd in his last start and 13th in the start before that. That is what we have on Cam as his stats will now wow you, but this is must more a play on Spieth who seems to simply be broken off the tee.

Tyrese Maxey added 23 points, with 15 coming in the opening period, and Kelly Oubre contributed 22 points, shooting 80% from the field and hitting 4 threes at a 66.7% rate.</p> <p>Philadelphia shot 49.4% from the field, connecting on 12 threes at a 36.4% clip. Oubre and Maxey each made 4 threes, with Maxey shooting 36.4% from deep.</p><p>The 76ers put together a solid defensive performance, holding the Hornets to just 98 points on Friday. They also sent the Bucks to the free-throw line 18 times, where Milwaukee made 11. Cleveland finished with 11 steals but didn't record a block.</p>

Arizona State Sun Devils vs USC Trojans Betting Pick & Prediction 3/7/24

We’ve got another limited field this week for the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges. Only 78 players are in the field, as the top 60 from the FedEx Cup standings plus some top Asian players and some sponsor exemptions make up the field for the second event at Nine Bridges Golf Club. Justin Thomas won last year’s inaugural event, which was another effort by the PGA Tour to grow the game in Asia.

With next week’s WGC event in China, we’ll have 15 of the top 40 in the Official World Golf Ranking on hand, so this is a stronger field than what we had to work with in last week’s CIMB Classic.

We’ll dig down the board for some top value options for this event and for all the events this golf season.

<strong>Value Picks</strong>

<strong>CT Pan ($7,800) – </strong>Cheng-Tsung Pan played much better than his final line from the CIMB Classic would indicate. Pan had an eagle and 21 birdies to go along with nine bogies and a double. He was 12-under, but that was only good enough for 30th on a course where low numbers are an imperative. Pan was strong with his irons, but did struggle in a lot of other areas. Nine Bridges requires good iron play with a lot of well-protected greens. Pan struggled here last year, but he came on strong in the second half of the 2017-18 season with a couple of top-five finishes at the Wyndham and the Dell Technologies Championship.

<strong>JB Holmes ($7,500) – </strong>JB Holmes has been swinging it extremely well through two events to start the year. He was ninth at the Safeway Open at Silverado and then flew west to Malaysia to finish just outside the top 10 at the CIMB Classic with an 18-under that placed him 13th. Each of the last six rounds for Holmes have come in under 70 and he has 47 birdies through those last two events. Holmes did not play well at all here last year, but that probably gives us a little bit of value on a guy that is in solid form through two events.

<strong>Si Woo Kim ($7,400) – </strong>It couldn’t have been easy to go into the CJ Cup as a Korean player last year. Si Woo Kim was one of several in the field playing on home soil for the first time in a PGA Tour event. Si Woo struggled and finished tied for 44th. Now a year older and a year wiser, the 23-year-old comes in off of a solid top-10 effort at the CIMB Classic. Kim putted very well, but struggled to get to the green when he was supposed to. Perhaps he was looking ahead a little bit to this one. In any event, he still played well and those nerves should be tamed a bit for a second crack at this title on Jeju Island.

<strong>Whee Kim ($6,600) – </strong>Whee Kim did not excel last week at the CIMB Classic, as he finished tied for 59th, but he’s been able to play two events now. Kim has not played well off of the tee, but that isn’t a huge concern here at Nine Bridges because this isn’t a course about length or fairways. This is a course about hitting greens with tough approach shots. Kim was very good at that two weeks ago at Silverado and it saved him from some really bad numbers at TPC Kuala Lumpur. Everything else let him down. Also a South Korea native from Seoul, Whee Kim was fourth here last year. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him knocking on the door once again, even if he isn’t in tip-top form.

<strong>Cameron Smith ($9,000) – </strong>I’m going to keep pushing this guy until he wins an event and prices us out. Cameron Smith was not as good as I expected last week at the CIMB Classic, as he finished 22nd. That being said, he didn’t shoot any rounds over 69. He just didn’t make enough birdies to hang the kinds of numbers that players need at that event. Smith was third here last year and, as mentioned last week, he’s played very well in these Asian events and early in the season. He was third in two of the FedEx Cup playoffs events, which should have given him some confidence for the start of a new season.
