Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Kansas City Chiefs Betting Pick & Prediction 11/4/24

It will be Kwang Hyun Kim for the Redbirds and Ryan Weathers for the Friars as San Diego is slotted in the -125 range with a total of 7 at the <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/us/">top US sportsbook</a></strong> BetUS.

Let’s take a look at the only night game on the board for Sunday and see if we can find a good bet.
<h2><strong><u>St. Louis Cardinals</u></strong></h2>
The Cardinals did not get a very good start from Adam Wainwright on Saturday. With Kwang Hyun Kim not able to work very deep into games, the Cardinals will have to hope that he is efficient with his pitches against a very tough San Diego lineup. The Padres have one of the highest walk rates in baseball, but Kim has only walked 17 batters in his 62 MLB innings.

Kim has only thrown 23 innings over his five starts, but has a 2.74 ERA with a 2.37 FIP. He’s seen a nice strikeout rate increase and it seems pretty legit based on his swinging strike rate and just the overall improved quality of his stuff. Remember that Kim, an import from the KBO, got to spend his first season in a new country dealing with the pandemic and probably an even higher degree of isolation with things closed and the weird schedule for the baseball season.

The Cardinals offense is a below average unit once again, but this is a group doing a better job of making more hard contact than in past seasons. St. Louis entered Saturday’s game with a 95 wRC+ and didn’t make many strides in terms of improving that number, but they have made better contact this season and should see some positive regression as we go forward.

It wasn’t on display in Saturday’s game, though a lot of balls were hit over fielder’s heads, but the Cardinals do grade as one of the better defensive teams in baseball. That should always be a factor in your handicapping, especially with a guy like Kim, who has seen a nice K% bump, but that could regress at any time.
<h2><strong><u>San Diego Padres</u></strong></h2>
Saturday’s offensive explosion should not have come as a big surprise. When you look at the Padres, there are a lot of things that you notice, including their contact quality as a team and how they’ve underachieved badly in light of it. San Diego is a team that makes a lot of hard contact, but has ranked in the bottom five in batting average on high-velocity batted balls.

When that does come around and gets up to where it should be, the Padres are going to be quite a juggernaut. They already have one of the best bullpens in baseball, which is almost a nightly advantage for them. It has simply been about the offense, how much production the Padres can find, and then how the starting pitching does in terms of working deep into the game or at least minimizing the damage.

Ryan Weathers has done a phenomenal job of limiting damage. He’s allowed just two runs on nine hits in 22.1 innings of work. He’s provided an enormous lift for a Padres team that expected to have Adrian Morejon and others on the front lines. Instead, Morejon had to have Tommy John surgery. Mike Clevinger was lost to the same procedure. Dinelson Lamet has spent time on the IL.

The Padres have needed Weathers badly and he has delivered. That being said, Weathers is something of a negative regression candidate with his .157 BABIP against and his 96.2% LOB%. Nothing against him, but nobody runs numbers like that in those two stats. More balls will find holes. The timing of those hits will have a lot to do with how soon Weathers allows more runs and sees those numbers change.
<h2><strong><u>Cardinals vs. Padres Free Pick</u></strong></h2>
Give me the Padres here in this one. San Diego stock is rising and it is a good time to buy. The Cardinals look to be a bit of an overachiever to this point in the season. San Diego could very well have the better starter, but definitely has the better lineup and the better bullpen. That is more than enough for me to lay this price in the -125 to -130 range.

<p>The Pittsburgh Steelers (5-5-1; 4-7 ATS) got embarrassed by the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday, suffering a 41-10 defeat as 3.5-point road underdogs. The Steelers extended their winless streak to three games, and everything started with Ben Roethlisberger’s absence due to COVID-19 in Week 10 that led to a disappointing 16-16 home tie against the hapless Detroit Lions.</p>



<p>After a heart-breaking 41-37 loss at the Chargers in Week 11, the Steelers laid an egg against the surging Bengals. They allowed 31 first-half points in another abysmal performance by their injury-depleted defensive unit, while Big Ben went 24-of-41 for 263 yards, a TD, and a couple of interceptions.</p>



<p>Pittsburgh’s offense is a mess, but surrendering 41 points for the second straight contest is even a bigger problem for the Steelers, who desperately need a win this weekend. With T.J. Watt on the COVID-19 list, things have just gone from bad to worse, as Joe Hadden (foot) and Robert Spillane (knee) are already listed as doubtful to play against the Ravens.</p>

<p>I’m expecting the Steelers’ defense to improve after a couple of awful displays, but without Claypool in the lineup, Pittsburgh’s offense lacks a deep threat that is necessary against this Baltimore defense. The Ravens will control the clock and run the ball as much as possible, so I lean the favorites to cover. Pittsburgh has just allowed 198 rushing yards to the Bengals (5.2 per carry).</p>

However, Gallen has a disappointing 5.61 ERA over his previous six outings.</p>



<h2><strong>The Phillies desperately need to get back to winning ways</strong></h2>



<p>The Philadelphia Phillies are slowly but surely losing the pace in the NL East title race. They were 63-32 following Tuesday’s defeat to Tampa Bay, trailing four and a half games behind the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.</p>



<p>The Phillies have dropped nine of their previous 13 games. During that stretch, they’ve compiled a 4.10 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a .228 batting average against. On the other side of the ball, the Phillies have been a complete disaster, posting the worst batting line in the majors by far (.187/.278/.329).</p>

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 wound up being another worst-case scenario for the drivers near the cut line. Austin Dillon, who does sit 14th in points now, won last week at Texas. That marks two weeks in a row that a driver outside of the playoff picture hawked a win. It was Cole Custer at Kentucky and now Austin Dillon at Texas. Dillon was 16th in points before the win, but Custer’s win would have left him out of the top 16 if the playoffs started last week.

Now, Dillon, who is +6600 to win this week, has secured a playoff berth.
<h3><strong><u>How They Stand</u></strong></h3>
The drivers that make it into the final eight will have a lot on the line for the second Kansas race, which will come October 18. That will be the first of three races in the Round of 8 portion of the playoffs.

At present, the top eight drivers are Kevin Harvick, Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., and Aric Almirola. That sure is a lot of representation for Ford in the top eight, as the first spot belongs to Harvick from Stewart-Haas Racing and the next three spots belong to the Team Penske crew. Almirola also runs a Ford for Stewart-Haas.

Almirola is the only one of the eight without a win, but he is safely in the playoffs anyway. The other drivers with wins are Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon, and Cole Custer. The others firmly in the playoffs are Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Matt DiBenedetto, and Clint Bowyer.

Jimmie Johnson sits precariously in 15th place with 427 points. Right now, he sits just two points ahead of William Byron for what amounts to the last playoff spot because Custer, who is 22nd in points, had that win at Kentucky.

As mentioned, Kansas is a twice-a-year stop. It is actually a pretty popular race destination with the Hollywood Casino, who owns naming rights for the playoff race, just in front of the track and it is a short drive on I-70 from either Kansas City or St. Louis to get to the race. Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, fans will not be on hand.

That is a shame because this is one of the quainter NASCAR tracks with capacity under 50,000. It is a standard 1.5-mile tri-oval with turns between 17-20 degrees and a pretty flat backstretch. The track opened in 2001 and has hosted events since that inaugural year, but picked up this second race in 2011.

In 2019, there were only seven cautions and there were only six cautions in 2018. There were 15 cautions in 2017 and the race was red-flagged for about 28 minutes. Hopefully the weather cooperates on Thursday night.
<h3><strong><u>The Odds Board</u></strong></h3>
Kevin Harvick is +400 this week and your race favorite. Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. are +600 and then Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch are +650. Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney are +800 and then Joey Logano is +1000 and Aric Almirola is +1200. Per usual, there is a big gap after that.

We are looking at some lengthy droughts among those top contenders, though. Harvick has only gone two races without a win and has five straight top-five finishes, so his favorite role is very much justified. Elliott has been priced like a superstar most of the year, but he hasn’t won in 10 races since he won the second Charlotte race after the restart.

Truex only has one win this season and only two additional top-five finishes. Hamlin has gone just three races without a win, but has finished outside the top 10 in all three. Busch doesn’t have a win yet this season and only has one in his last 39 starts.

Keselowski hasn’t won since Bristol and Logano hasn’t won since Phoenix. Blaney’s only win came at Talladega, but he was the best last week at Texas with the most laps led and two stage wins. Almirola doesn’t have a win, but strung together all five of his top-five finishes before finishing eighth and 10th in the last two events.

The pricing structure in NASCAR seems a little off right now. Drivers are largely priced on reputation. In fairness, a lot of these guys can win any week, but they haven’t been. We’ve seen some off-the-board winners the last two weeks.

It sort of brings up a philosophical discussion with NASCAR. Which matters more? Track history or recent form?
<h3><strong><u>Kansas</u></strong><strong><u> Form</u></strong></h3>
Admittedly, I don’t know. Harvick has two wins, two seconds, and a third over his last 10 races at Kansas, but has also finished outside the top five in four of his last five starts. Overall, he has eight top-five finishes and 15 top-10 finishes in 28 starts.

Kyle Busch has a win and six total top-five finishes in his last nine starts at Kansas. He was third in the playoff race last year and second in the playoff race in 2018. His win came in this race back in 2016. If you’re looking for him to end the drought, though, he only has one win in 24 races here and only seven top-five finishes.

His brother, Kurt, was fourth in the fall here last year and seventh in the first race. He doesn’t have any wins here, but four top-five finishes in 28 starts.

The results are kind of spread around here. Johnson and Harvick have three wins apiece, but Johnson’s last Kansas win came in 2015. Matt Kenseth, Truex, Keselowski, Hamlin, and Logano are the only other active multiple winners here.

Elliott has probably had the highest rate of success with a win and four total top-five finishes in just eight starts. He also has five total top-10 finishes. He won the fall race in 2018.

Truex swept these two races in 2017, was second and fifth in 2018, and then 19th and sixth in 2019. Truex just hasn’t shown enough consistent speed this season and really since Furniture Row Racing got swallowed up officially by Joe Gibbs Racing to be worth taking at +600.

Despite the 1.5-mile length of this track, we’ve seen results that have been all over the place. Even though the price isn’t great relative to the recent results, Chase Elliott makes the card this week at +600. He’s been strong in his starts here.
