The New York Yankees extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 68-52 on the season following 5-3 and 2-0 victories to the Boston Red Sox in Tuesday’s seven-inning doubleheader (Wednesday night’s clash against the Sawx has been excluded from the analysis).



The Yanks are still five games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays, but they are tied with the Red Sox and Oakland Athletics for the wild-card spot. New York has won 13 of its first 17 contests in August, scoring 86 runs on a .255/.343/.418 batting line and posting a nice 2.89 ERA in the process.

The Yankees have done a solid job at the plate so far this month, while their pitching has been remarkable lately. New York’s relievers boast the lowest ERA in the majors in August (1.91), so I’m backing the Yanks to extend their good run of form.









The Total:



I’ve mentioned how good the Twins bullpen is at the moment, but Minnesota could easily struggle with depth. The Twins will have to start regressing at some point, though the Yankees’ offense doesn’t look like a massive challenge.



Betting on the hosts seems like a slam dunk, while the totals are a tricky wager. The Yankees are killing it on the mound, so the under should be the right move, but I don’t trust the Twins ‘pen despite its recent record.

Pelicans are on a losing streak again



The New Orleans Pelicans (30-31, 28-33-0 ATS) did bounce back from a ten-game losing skid with three consecutive wins but returned to losing ways and are now on a three-game losing run. The Pelicans returned home from a four-game road trip on which they suffered three defeats, including the latest one to the New York Knicks. New Orleans allowed even 73 points in the opening half at Madison Square Garden, and although they improved in the second half, it was far from enough to avoid a massive 128-106 loss. The Pels shot just 39.2% from the field and made only eight triples opposite the Knicks’ 19, while the hosts were also better in rebounds (54-39).



Brandon Ingram led the Pelicans with 19 points and four rebounds. Josh Richardson had 16 points, team-high four assists, and game-high four steals, C.J. McCollum scored 13 points with four dimes, while Jonas Valanciunas posted a double-double of 12 points and team-high ten boards.



PF Zion Williamson (hamstring) is out indefinitely, while PF Larry Nance Jr. (ankle) left the last game with an injury and is questionable to face the Magic on Monday.

While both teams are pretty close when it comes to defense and points allowed per game. New Orleans allows 113.8 ppg and Orlando surrenders 113.7 ppg, but the Pels are better offensively. They are scoring 114.7 points per contest, which is an average offense in the NBA, but that cannot be said for the Magic, who average 110.8 ppg – the third weakest offense in the league. Although they are playing without injured Zion Williamson, the Pels are still alive in the playoff race and I am backing them to return to .500 with a win on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Pick: Take the Pelicans at -1.5 (-133)



The Total



The Pelicans failed to score more than 110 points in each of their previous five games, and even though Orlando has a relatively good defense, I expect the hosts to bounce back offensively in this one. New Orleans will likely have to score at least 115 in order to get a win, and I am backing them to do it. It’s going to be a tight encounter, so we could have an interesting finish and overtime is also a possibility. Over is 6-1 in the last seven H2H meetings; Over is 5-0 in the Pelicans’ previous five games after allowing more than 125 points in their last game, while Over is 6-1 in New Orleans’ last seven vs. a team with a losing straight-up record.

Kevin Gausman will get the nod Tuesday, looking to get back on the right track. He’s been terrific for most of the season, going 14-6 with a 2.78 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 30 starts, but over his previous three starts and 18 innings of work, the 30-year-old has surrendered 10 earned runs on 21 hits and a couple of walks.



Last time out, Gausman took a loss in a 7-4 defeat to San Diego, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and a walk through five frames. He’s 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in four starts against the Padres in 2021 (24 innings pitched).



<h2>The Padres desperately need a win</h2>



The San Diego Padres lost at St. Louis 8-7 last Sunday and got swept by the Cardinals in a three-game series at Busch Stadium. It was their eighth defeat in the last ten games overall, so the 76-73 Padres trailed the bottom wild card in the National League by three and a half games.



San Diego has fallen apart on both sides of the ball lately. In the past two weeks, the Padres have recorded the third-highest ERA in the majors (6.03) to go with a 1.30 WHIP and a .245 batting average against. They’ve posted an underwhelming .231/.287/.326 batting line as well.



Joe Musgrove will take the hill Tuesday, and he’s 11-9 with a 2.99 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 28 starts and one relief appearance in 2021. The 28-year-old righty has registered a 4.15 ERA through his three starts in September, allowing a .871 OPS and .261 BABIP to his opponents.



Musgrove met the Padres last week and took a win in a 9-6 road victory, yielding three earned runs on five hits and three walks across six frames of work. He’s now 1-2 with a poor 6.75 ERA in three starts against San Diego in 2021.

Frankly, this game could easily go either way. Both teams are in a must-win situation, as the Padres chase the wild card, while the Giants are only one game ahead of the LA Dodgers in the race for the NL West title.



The Giants’ offense could make the difference, though you never know with this San Diego team. The Padres have struggled mightily at the dish lately, but they arguably have a ton of dangerous bats on their lineup.

The Padres desperately need a strong performance from Joe Musgrove, as their bullpen has registered a terrible 5.98 ERA and 5.74 FIP in the last two weeks of action. However, the Giants have owned Musgrove so far this term, so I’m backing the over on the totals.



The Giants bullpen has been doing a good job all season, and in the past two weeks, it has recorded a 2.92 ERA and 4.06 FIP. Still, Gausman hasn’t been at his best recently, and the Padres just have to score some runs if they want to come out on top.&nbsp;
