The Heat, as the defending Eastern Conference champion, has been something of a disappointing entry. But the Spurs might be a bit of a different story, as they have been in a transition phase, which coach Gregg Popovich has, by all accounts, handled nicely.

Derrick White will be out of this game for San Antonio with an ankle injury, while the Heat will once again be missing Victor Oladipo (he's only played four games for them) with Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn, Tyler Herro (who's been an off-the-court problem for them) and Andre Iguodala listed as "day to day."

San Antonio's last game was a wild one, as it won a 146-143 overtime decision over the Washington Wizards. DeMar DeRozan had 37 points, with Dejounte Murray adding 25 and Keldon Johnson 21. They committed only six turnovers in the 53 minutes of play. Also, not one member of San Antonio's starting five made a three-pointer.

That's the more telling stat; San Antonio has attempted more two-point shots than any other team in the NBA. They have also taken fewer three-pointers than all other teams but one. All told, the Spurs have taken just 32% of their shots from beyond the arc.

We mention this because in the last meeting between these teams, which took place just a week ago, the Heat held the Spurs to just 34 points and 29% shooting in the second half on the way to a 107-87 victory. Miami forced San Antonio to take 35 shots from long range - that was 45% of their attempts.

And that is not an accident. The Heat's defensive scheme has coerced opponents to take fewer two-pointers and the second most triples of any team in the league.

So in other words, their design was very successful in making the Spurs do what they DID NOT want to do on offense. And that is a formula for success.

<p>That’s just one situation that this team is known for. They don’t have cheap at-bats, they’re well managed and they play good defense. They’re sixth in Runs Saved and have committed just four errors as a team this season (tied for fifth-fewest).</p>



<p>According to first baseman Luke Raley, he believes that this team already has good chemistry and they’ll continue to be dominant for that very reason. And Quentin Grimes is also starting to fulfill his potential. The 6 - 5 swingman started every game as a true freshman at Kansas, which is not an insignificant feat. But the general feeling is that he under-achieved there. Now he's averaging over 17 points per game.

Tulsa is almost completely impotent from three-point range, hitting only 27.6%. And they are one of the worst teams when it comes to converting free throws as well (65.3). So they are going to have to pursue a game inside the arc, but we don't see any real advantages for them there.

The Bills have, in fact, gone to the air on 60.2% of their plays, which does not indicate overload, but definitely a less conservative approach than Sean McDermott had been used to taking.

And why not? Josh Allen, who's been taking lessons from passing guru Jordan Palmer (yes, brother of Carson) and simply learned a lot while taking his lumps over two seasons in the league, blossomed in 2020, with 4544 yards and 39 touchdown passes. And what is extraordinary is that while he covers a lot of ground (throwing 8.5 yards on average beyond the line of scrimmage), he also has a 69% completion rate, which compares favorably with that of counterpart Philip Rivers (26th among NFL QBs in 'Intended Air Yards').

And with the addition of Stefon Diggs (listed as questionable, but should play), he's got a receiver that was arguably the most productive in the NFL (127 catches, 1532 yards). Then add the likes of Cole Beasley, the short-range guy (967 yards) and speed demon John Brown, and you have an offense that might be as threatening as any, with only a couple of exceptions.

Indianapolis is not one of those exceptions. Rivers does not have receivers who get down the field and stretch a defense like the Bills do. TY Hilton used to be one of those guys, but not any more. What the Colts have to do is kill the clock. And that means heavy doses of rookie Jonathan Taylor, who appears to be peaking right now (253 yards last week). But we doubt that the Colts are going to win simply by running the ball, even though Buffalo has allowed 4.6 yards per attempt. The Bills could stack up against the run, and even though it is a small sampling, the results show that when Rivers has to throw the ball 40 or more times, Indy loses (three out of four, in fact).

And now let's talk about the Colts' perceived edge on the defensive end for a second. We could see that fundamentally this team was very sound. But we also knew that the schedule was going to get more challenging as the season progressed.

In the first nine games of the season, Indy gave up just 17.8 points per game. Over the last seven games, that average was 26.4, and that's quite a jump.

And if you want to look at some advanced metrics, when it comes to yardage allowed on a per drive basis, the Colts and Bills are only one place apart in the NFL rankings. And for what it's worth, it's Buffalo that is ahead in that category.

Because of this slide on defense, the Colts played nine games over the total. And the Bills have just been an "over" team all year (10-4-2 to that side). That's one way we'll go.

But we also see the Colts having a problem trading here, even if Frank Reich is able to come up with an industrious game plan. So we would lay the points as well, as Allen shows he's learned some lessons from last year's collapse in the overtime playoff loss to Houston.

There may not be a starting lineup that brings more defense to the table than the Clippers do. Aside from Leonard and George, they've got a certifiable pest in the backcourt in Patrick Beverley. And perhaps not enough people are paying attention to the man in the middle.

Now think about the fact that both Williams and Harrell have scored more than 18 points per contest, and you know that if these guys can't take their "A" game onto the court, that will leave a void against an opponent that can put points on the board the way the Mavs can.

So while the Clips may have that element that should be able to mitigate what Dallas does well, it would not surprise us if they had a little more trouble than anticipated on their way to the next round.

NBA Playoff Preview -- Clippers Must Get on Defensive vs. Mavericks

If you listen to a lot of the speculation, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs might join the Clemson Tigers in the four-team college football playoff, regardless of the result of Saturday's game between them. These two programs have mat in an SEC title game and national title game in recent years, but they have not met in the regular season since 2015. Alabama has notoriously gotten a break from SEC schedule-makers, so they've usually been able to avoid the big boys outside of their own division.

There is no question that the loser here will have their work cut out for them. They go at it in Tuscaloosa at 8 PM ET.

Alabama is ranked second in the nation by the Associated Press. Georgia is third. And the wild card here is the status of Nick Saban, who tested positive for the coronavirus this week and needs three negative tests, spaced appropriately, in order to patrol the sidelines this week. We don't have confirmation of anything as of this writing.

I would doubt they're going to play pinball this week.

No team in the country this season has held its opponents to fewer yards per play than Georgia (3.5). And they played against three teams from the SEC (Arkansas, Auburn, Tennessee) who will probably wind up in some kind of bowl game.

Being able to throttle Auburn, holding the War Eagle to just 216 yards and a couple of field goals, got the attention of a lot of people, although that result probably meant more then than it does now.

We don't know if we can say that this is Alabama's best offense. But this will be a test of it. Mac Jones is setting the world on fire right now; he is completing 80% of his passes and is averaging 13.3 yards per attempt. That's pretty crazy. He has put the ball in the air just 83 times and has thrown eight touchdowns. In the early going, 'Bama is averaging 560 yards a contest.

Jones is a guy who can take this team downfield; last year, for instance, he averaged over 18 yards an attempt when throwing the ball more than ten yards beyond the line of scrimmage. This year he is 72% with 21 yards an attempt. And when you expand that to the 20 yards-plus category, the average is 37 yards an attempt . That's not only phenomenal. It is the characteristic that forces the defense to construct their game plan completely differently.

Yet Alabama has found time to run the ball, doing it 52% of the time. And that's important. Of course, when you have Najee Harris, you'll be okay doing that. He's averaging 3.6 yards per attempt after contact and had 206 yards vs. Ole Miss. Georgia gives up 1.5 yards per rush. So it's a battle.

I think the bottom line in this contest is that Georgia, which was dominated by the LSU offense last year, may not be in a position to trade. And trade is what they may have to do.

Yes, they have glittering defensive stats, and that includes an opponents' 28% on third down. But the attacks they have faced are pedestrian compared to the one Alabama offers. The challenge the Tide presents is that they will make you cover the whole field. Georgia will have to have those safeties ready to cover deep, because Jones' performance has been out of this world in that respect, and it's so unusual that it counts for an awful lot here. But then, up the gut or to the outside, Harris can burn you too.

Georgia QB Stetson Bennett, who surprisingly won the job in fall practice, is a capable game manager but maybe not a dynamic passer yet. And the Bulldogs don't have the kind of running game that bruises opponents, as they have almost constantly had in the recent past.

We appreciate everything Kirby Smart can do, and he has scared Saban in the past, but he had better offensive weapons in those games. A lot of defenses are great, but Alabama has the ability to make enough big plays that they are going to be one score (at least) better in the end. BAMA
