The Japanese pitcher threw for 5.2 innings against the Braves last year and recorded a 3.18 in a loss.



Atlanta will have a rookie pitcher Bryce Elder on the mound. His first-ever start in the MLB was decent, but he was credited with a win over Washington more thanks to his batters than his pitching. The 22-year-old righty finished the game with a 4.76 ERA over 5.2 innings, but the Braves’ batters got 16 runs in a massive 16-4 victory over the Nats. I expect him to struggle against San Diego’s hitters, who are better than Washington’s in every segment. It’s going to be an uphill battle for the Braves on Sunday, and I am backing the hosts to take this one.

The Total



These two teams are fun to watch, even though they are playing without their superstars - Ronald Acuna Jr. and Fernando Tatis Jr. Still, there are numerous All-Stars on each team, and I expect to see a high-scoring affair after these rivals failed to combine for more than seven runs in the last two H2Hs.



Although I am backing Darvish to improve from his latest start, I don’t think he will have an easy job here. He will surrender a few runs in the opening three or four innings, that’s for sure, because it’s not 2013 or 2020, when Darvish dominated. Elder is going to struggle against Machado, Hosmer, and Profar, so I am going with Over in this one.

Anyway, both teams have plenty of offensive weapons, so I’m backing the over on the totals. Also, the Cowboys’ defense cannot be trusted, and the Bucs certainly have a plan on how to smash it in the opening week.

In a year unlike any other, the Pac-12 has become a Man of the People. As the spotlight game here, we’ll break it down from both sides and also tip a cap to the Pac-12 for being everybody’s favorite conference for at least a day.
<h3>Cal Golden Bears</h3>
Cal is off to a 2-11 start in conference play. Nobody said this was going to be a good game, but it’s going to be a post-Super Bowl game, damnit, and that will get some attention. Opponents are firing away at 39.8% from distance against Cal, which is a primary factor as to why the team has played so poorly in conference action. It doesn’t help that Cal is shooting 33.6% on three-point attempts themselves and that they’re taking a three-pointer over 42% of the time.

If we look specifically at the numbers in the 13 Pac-12 games, Cal is 11th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 11th in adjusted defensive efficiency. The success rate on threes is a touch higher at 33.8%, but opponents have made 40.9% of their triple tries against Cal. Of course, they’ve also had great success on two-point shots as well with 52.7% of those going in the cylinder.

There are a myriad of problems with this Cal team. They don’t take care of the basketball relative to other teams in the conference. They are the conference’s worst free throw shooting team. It’s just pretty much all been bad for Mark Fox. This is only Fox’s second season in Berkeley, but things are off to a rather inauspicious start. Top recruit Monty Bowser has barely played and juniors Matt Bradley and Andre Kelly have been the only reliable scoring threats.

Bradley is the team’s top three-point shooter and Kelly is the team’s best finisher inside the arc. Cal has only topped 70 points in two conference games and won both of those. Otherwise, they’ve been held in check on the offensive side and don’t play nearly good enough defense to win low-scoring games.

<h3>Stanford Cardinal</h3>
Stanford has a very solid defense under head coach Jerod Haase, but the team has left some wins out there on the floor. The Cardinal rank 18th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency, but only sit at 11-7 and just 7-5 in Pac-12 play. Stanford, like Cal, struggles to take care of the basketball, putting a lot of pressure on the defense to get stops. Fortunately, the defense has gotten a lot of those stops, but Stanford doesn’t shoot many three-pointers and it sure seems like teams that are bombing away are the teams having the most offensive success this season.

Stanford is 313th in 3P Rate in the nation, which is probably for the best because the Cardinal have only made 31.3% of their three-point attempts. They are shooting 53% inside the arc, though, and have gotten to the free throw line a ton throughout the course of the season. They’ve also made the most of those free points by shooting 73.7% at the charity stripe.

Two-point defense has been the star of the show without the basketball for Stanford. Opponents are only shooting 45.1% on two-point attempts. That number does go up to 47% on two-pointers in conference play, but is still the third-best mark in league action. It is hard to fathom how Stanford is second in eFG% defense and third in eFG% offense in conference play, but just 7-5.

Basically, what has happened is that Stanford has won the games that they are supposed to win and lost the games they are supposed to lose. Stanford’s five losses are at Oregon, at Utah, at Colorado, at Arizona State, and at home to USC. The only semi-shocking wins have come in a sweep over Arizona.
<h3>Pick &amp; Analysis</h3>
These two teams just played in Berkeley on Thursday and Stanford won 70-55 in a game played to 67 possessions. Stanford’s two-point defense was on full display and Cal’s mostly inept offense was as well. I don’t see any reason to expect this game to be a whole lot different.

It is scary to play an under with a team like Stanford that gets to the free throw line a lot, but they are a deliberate team on offense and should get margin in this game again, which will allow them to hold the ball longer on second-half possessions.

I’ll look under 132 in this late game, but this isn’t a strong play. Just action because this is a seminal sports betting moment to have a game after the Super Bowl.

This season, David Pastrnak is not only the best Bruin, but he is the 4th best player in the NHL with 71 points (G38, A33), even 25 more than the next Boston player in that standings. Brad Marchand has 46 points (G 16, A 30) and David Krejci contributes 41 (G 12, A 29).



Jeremy Swayman (12-3-4) is slated to start between the sticks against Toronto on Wednesday. The 24-year-old is surrendering 2.34 goals per game this year with a .914 SV% and one shutout.



C Tomas Nosek (foot) and LW Jake DeBrusk (fibula) are out indefinitely and will not face Toronto on Wednesday.



Maple Leafs got an easy W at home over Washington



The Toronto Maple Leafs (31-12-7-1) responded to a 6-2 home loss to the Ottawa Senators with a comfortable 5-1 home victory over the Washington Capitals. The Leafs will now conclude their five-game homestay with a tilt against Boston, after which they’ll travel to Columbus and then will return home for a three-game stay. Toronto won five of the last seven games and is 3rd in the East with 70 points, 11 behind the Bruins.



Washington got to a 1-0 lead in Toronto, but the Maple Leafs answered with four goals in the second period and added one more in the final frame to secure an easy win. The hosts were quite accurate in front of the goals as they scored five goals from 27 shots. Michael Bunting and John Tavares led the team with two points apiece. This year, William Nylander (G 28, A 31) and Mitchell Marner (G 18, A 41) lead the Maple Leafs with 59 points each, Auston Matthews has 53 (G 25, A 28), while John Tavares chips in 51 points (G 21, A 30).

Boston is going through a rough patch but still has enough space to recover and remains atop the Eastern Conference. However, I don’t think the Bruins’ losing skid will snap in Toronto, considering the current form of both teams and the fact that the Maple Leafs won seven of the previous eight home games. Also, Toronto won four of the last five H2Hs at home, including each of the last three. Even without Matthews, the Leafs are a dangerous team and I think the Bruins will feel that on their own skin on Wednesday.

The Total



Although Linus Ullmark is the best goaltender in the NHL at the moment, Jeremy Swayman, who will likely start for the Bruins, is in excellent form right now and is allowed just 1.66 goals per game in January. That said, I don’t think the Maple Leafs will be fruitful in front of the goal like they did the last time out against Washington, and that’s why I expect a low-scoring affair. First-year head coach Andy Kennedy is putting in work in Birmingham. The former Ole Miss bench boss is in his first season with the Blazers and this team has a very impressive statistical profile, particularly on the defensive side. It is worth pointing out that UAB has played the 309th-ranked schedule in the country, but all you can do is play the teams in front of you and UAB has done that well.

The Blazers go into this game with an 11-5 record against the number and they’ve taken the early money here to bump this line down from +2 to PK. UAB is sixth in the country in TO% on offense and fifth in TO% on defense. Those two numbers have been a major key to the team’s success thus far. Opponents are also only shooting 29.9% on threes and just 43.8% on twos, as UAB ranks 33rd in the nation in Block% on defense.

It is a bit surprising that with such good defense and so many swats that the Blazers aren’t a bit better in the rebounding department, especially with the schedule. They are below average on the offensive glass and 83rd in ORB% against. At least they are doing well rebounding opposition misses because there certainly have been a lot of them. The Blazers come into this game ranked 10th in eFG% defense.

However, as KenPom notes, the Blazers have faced the 336th-ranked slate of offenses and there are only 347 teams playing this season. Conference USA is not a great league this season, so UAB has taken advantage of that, plus a weak non-conference slate, though they have beaten Rice and UTEP twice, with all of the wins coming by double digits.

<h3>Louisiana Tech Bulldogs</h3>
The Bulldogs represent the highest-ranked opponent of the season for UAB per Bart Torvik and also Ken Pomeroy. Louisiana Tech is a fringe top-100 team and a win here would likely elevate their profile a little bit more. After splitting last weekend with North Texas in Denton, the Bulldogs would love to defend the home floor a couple of times here in this back-to-back with the Blazers.

Louisiana Tech’s profile doesn’t fully align with UAB’s, but the Bulldogs have played the 173rd schedule per Torvik and 185th per KenPom. The Bulldogs have played a far tougher conference schedule. They have already played Marshall, Western Kentucky, and North Texas. UAB will only play North Texas to finish the regular season. That is a big reason why LA Tech has four conference losses to just one for the Blazers. Louisiana Tech split with Marshall, WKU, UTEP, and also North Texas, to go along with losses to LSU and Louisiana in non-conference action.

Overall, Louisiana Tech is 55th in adjusted defensive efficiency and 31st in eFG%. Opponents are only shooting 30% from deep and 46.4% on two-point attempts. In conference play, though, the Bulldogs, who, again, have played the tougher conference schedule, are first in adjusted defensive efficiency, eFG%, and 3P% defense. UAB is actually 11th in 3P% defense in conference action, which speaks to just how weak that non-conference schedule was.

The turnovers are likely to be the primary deciding point here. While UAB is tops in the conference in takeaways, Louisiana Tech is 11th. The Bulldogs defend exceedingly well in the halfcourt, but also rank ninth in 3P% on offense and eighth in 2P%. They get to the line a good bit and then only make 68.4% of their free throws when they get there. Louisiana Tech’s inefficiency on offense has been a contributing factor in both close wins and outright losses.
<h3>Pick &amp; Analysis</h3>
There are a lot of similarities between these two teams. Both are defense-first squads that have not played well offensively in conference action. The major difference is that UAB takes great care of the basketball and also does well to take it away. Because of that, we have our play for this game and it is the under 132.

UAB plays at a much slower tempo than LA Tech. If the Blazers are maintaining control of the ball and also taking it away, the game will be played much closer to the tempo that they want. Neither one of these teams bombs away from three. Neither team sets the world on fire at the free throw line. A foul fest at the end is a concern, but I like this handicap and the under is the play.

The 22-year-old center Elias Pettersson played just 26 games in 2021 and accounted for 10 goals and 11 assists. If he stays healthy, Pettersson will be a key guy for the Canucks this time around. Winger Brock Boeser led the way last season, tallying 49 points through 56 games (23 goals and 26 assists), but he’s questionable to play Wednesday against Edmonton due to an undisclosed injury.



<h2>Edmonton aims for its third straight playoff appearance</h2>



The Edmonton Oilers have struggled mightily over the last 15 years. Just three playoff appearances and a bunch of playoff losses for the Oilers in that stretch. Edmonton went 35-19-2 this past regular season and finished second in the North Division, but the Oilers got swept by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the 2021 Stanley Cup.



Centers Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined for a whopping 189 points last regular season, while defenseman Tyson Barrie added eight goals and 40 assists. The Oilers were seventh in the league in goals scored per game (3.27) and 12th in goals against (2.75).



During the preseason, Edmonton has recorded six wins and a pair of losses to Winnipeg 5-1 and Seattle 2-1 in overtime. The Oilers have conceded 17 goals in the process while scoring 26 in a return.

Mike Smith is expected to patrol the crease for the Oilers, and the 39-year-old veteran is 17-11-2 with a 2.69 against the Canucks throughout his career. Last season, Smith was 21-6-2 with an excellent 2.31 GAA and a .923 save percentage.

Thatcher Demko should guard the cage for the Canucks, and he’s 3-6-0 with a 3.04 against the Oilers. Last season, the talented 25-year-old goalie went 16-18-1 with a 2.85 GAA and a .915 save percentage. If Demko and Mike Smith put on a strong performance, we shouldn’t see a proper high-scoring affair even though both teams have some big guns up front.



Six of the last ten meetings between the Canucks and Oilers went in the over, but four of the previous seven saw five or fewer goals on the scoreboard.

After a successful debut with NFL Prop Bets, I’m back for the MLB season taking a slightly different approach to betting these games. You can find one of the most thorough daily MLB write ups here on this site from Adam Burke so I’ll be doing something a bit different.

Every weekend, I’ll be posting a play from Sunday Night Baseball looking along the edges for opportunities in the prop betting market. Some good bets can be found looking at 1st inning scoring, 1st five innings sides or totals and looking at individual player props. Let’s get creative and have some fun!

We struggled a bit in one week but that’s the start of baseball season for ya and we’ll bounce back. It wasn’t a bullpen blow up that cost us, but more so a case of men left on base. I figured the pitchers would struggle and we’ll see some runs, but that only partly came to fruition. My ‘1st inning run’ bet was a loser even though there were 5 walks allowed alone in the 1st inning. That’s close to impossible to happen again. In total, there were 15 walks in the game and 32 men left on base while both teams combined for 1/14 with runners in scoring position. It’s frustrating but it happens and that’s why it’s wise to start off the year with conservative bets.

Tonight, I’ll be siding with the chalk as the red hot Dodgers play in Colorado on National television. Perhaps playing a night game in a haze of weed smoke at Coors Field may help Corey Seager hit the ball as he’s the only big name Dodger starter that’s struggled this year. The rest of team has mashed as they lead the MLB in most hitting categories. This line opened at -140 and has been steamed up to -155 and should close higher than that come game time. It’s hard to sweep a team but I’m not ready yet to jump on the Rockies even with the possibility of getting some value tonight. Their big bats of Arenado, Story and Blackmon have struggled so far but if they lose again tonight then I may look for them to get back on track in their upcoming series vs Atlanta’s bullpen and SF’s starters.

Julio Urias makes his second start of the year after an impressive debut (5IP/0ER/3H/7K). Albeit, it was against possibly the worst line up in the league in the Giants but it’s a good sign. He’s back after missing most of 2018 with an elbow injury and is throwing harder than ever. A few Rockies have seen him before and have had some success (Arenado 3/4, Blackmon 2/3, Dahl 1/2) so there’s a possibility Arenado and Blackmon may get their season on track against the young lefty.

It’s mediocre righty Chad Bettis on the mound for Colorado which you’d think is good news if you’re a big left handed Dodger bat. However, in 2018 his ERA and hits allowed were double that from right handed batters vs lefties so I like the looks of Justin Turner and AJ Pollock who are a combined 13/33 vs the Chad. After getting roughed up last week in Tampa taking the loss and giving up 7 hits, 6ER, 2BB over 5.2 IP, he’ll need to be on his game to limit this Dodger offense. Statistically, the Rockies hold a bullpen edge so far in 2019 but the Dodger bullpen is better. That said, they may throw out their Tuesday afternoon stripper squad if they have a lead so it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Rockies pick up a few runs late.

NFL Preseason Odds -- Will the Eagles Have Enough "Arms" to Fly Past Pats?



Who is eventually going to be taking snaps at quarterback for the New England Patriots in the regular season? Well, as most BetAnySports customers know, that has yet to be determined. So these preseason games may go a long way toward determining that.



The Patriots saw some stuff that was encouraging out of both former MVP Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones in last week's win over the Washington Football Team, and now they'll take on another NFC East team as they visit the&nbsp;Philadelphia Eagles&nbsp;at 7:30 PM ET on Thursday at Lincoln Financial Field.

And we are following the Patriots' situation with a lot of curiosity, because without Tom Brady, they had problems. While the widely-acclaimed "G.O.A.T." was winning another Super Bowl in Tampa Bay, Bill Belichick was struggling with his quarterback situation. He had chosen Cam Newton as the heir apparent, and Newton had proceeded to throw just eight touchdown passes.



While Newton certainly has some usefulness in the rushing department, the strength of his arm has come into question, as it had been in his latter years with the Carolina Panthers. No, he is not the same guy who won an MVP award as he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl. But the question is whether he can win with what Belichick can put around him.



But maybe the better question is whether he'll even get a full opportunity to redeem himself. A rookie quarterback was drafted in the first round, and that rookie is eventually going to take over the starting job. Will that happen sooner than later? As we alluded to at the top, a game like this one might help Belichick make his decision.

It's really no secret that Belichick and Alabama coach Nick Saban are very close friends,



And so you've got to imagine that the two spoke at length about Mac Jones before Belichick drafted the QB in the first round. There were questions about Jones' arm during the draft process, although it was said that the San Francisco 49ers were interested in taking him with the third overall selection, before they decided on Trey Lance.



But Jones was said to be "NFL-ready," in terms of his ability to lead an offense. But you know, he was unusually accurate on long passes, completing 74% beyond 20 yards in the air.



It's conceivable that as New England proceeds with two tight ends as a major staple of its offense, that will play into Jones' strengths, although Belichick is hoping this will help Newton too.



And since&nbsp;BetAnySports&nbsp;patrons know that the Pats like to run the ball - indeed, NEED to - it was significant that they got big plays out of fourth-round draft pick Rhamondre Stevenson, who rambled for a 91-yard touchdown against Washington. It's going to be a committee in Foxborough, and he'll be part of it.



We're not sure what to expect out of the Eagles, except that if they're healthier, they could be better than last season. There were so many injuries. Then there was drama. And now there's a new coach (Nick Sirianni, who was the offensive coordinator with the Chargers last year).



The chances for the Eagles pretty much comes down to how much Jalen Hurts can progress. Will defenses concentrate on his running ability and make him beat them with his arm? Whatever the case, Hurts' teammates are reportedly, to a man, enamored with him.



But the second and third-team defenders were not stellar last week against Pittsburgh. They made Dwayne Haskins look like an All-Pro. That wasn't a good look.



Remember that Jones (13 of 19 last week) is a quick study, and that Bryan Hoyer and Cam Newton have had time in the offensive system. On this end, we favor the Patriots minus the points.
