With a WGC event on the horizon and three straight high-octane events, quite a few players are taking this week off as the Honda Classic takes place at PGA National. This event is here for the 15th time on the Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. This will end the Florida swing, as the golfers won’t be back until the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook in early May.

Coming out of the WGC, two Invitational tournaments, and then the PLAYERS Championship, the PGA Tour’s signature event, some strong players are at the top of the board, but the overall strength of this field is quite a bit lower with the Dell Match Play next week and The Masters just two weeks after that.

We’ll break this one down for you with the odds from <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betanysports"><strong>BetAnySports.eu</strong></a> down at the bottom of the page.
<h3><strong><u>The Field</u></strong></h3>
Daniel Berger and reigning champion Sungjae Im headline this week’s field. Lee Westwood will give it another go after playing a round at Augusta National with his son on Monday to decompress from what happened last week at the PLAYERS Championship when he came up one shot shy of Justin Thomas. Joaquin Niemann is also on hand, along with Brian Harman and Talor Gooch, who both had strong showings at TPC Sawgrass.

To give you an idea of where this field stands, though, Adam Scott is +2500. Rickie Fowler is down at +4500. This is not a heavy field at all. It’s a good time to go price hunting for sure. I hate to harp on who isn’t here when there are a lot of good players that are on hand, but this field is lacking top-end talent to say the least.

Per BAS, Berger is the +1100 favorite, followed by Im at +1200, Westwood at +1800, Niemann at +2000, Scott at +2500, Harman at +2800, Shane Lowry, who also played well last week, at +2800, Gooch and Russell Henley at +3000, and Chris Kirk at +3500.
<h3><strong><u>Course Profile</u></strong></h3>
PGA National is a par 70 that comes in at 7,125 yards. The Bear Trap is what this course is known for with lots of water in play on holes 15 through 17. Wind can be a huge issue on this course because there are not a lot of trees to obstruct the breeze. Club selection is really important, just as we saw on Sunday’s final round at Sawgrass when the winds picked up.

Aggression can be really punished here. Players tend to be a little bit risk-averse off of the tee, going with long irons and fairway metals over the driver. Getting in trouble and having to scramble when par is a good score can be challenging.

How tough is scoring on this course? Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, and Camilo Villegas are the only players to win with a score of at least 10-under par. When Im won last year, he was just 6-under. The winning score is typically around 8 or 9-under. There are only two par 5s and some big par 4s.

<h3><strong><u>Yay or Neigh?</u></strong></h3>
This is our Horse for Course section. The players that have played well here are guys that have been in good form because this is a very hard course to consistently score well at for a variety of reasons.

Several recent winners are in the field. Im is the reigning champ. Keith Mitchell won in 2019. Fowler won in 2017. Scott in 2016. Padraig Harrington won in 2015. Russell Henley won in 2014. Michael Thompson won back in 2013. Rory Sabbatini is here again and he won in 2012. So is Villegas with his 2011 win.

The problem is that virtually none of those guys are in great current form. Henley was eighth here for his third straight top-25 finish, but he has been 30th or lower in his last four events. Im is in the best shape of past winners, but that’s why he’s second on the board at +1200. Fowler missed the cut last year and also last week, but was second two years ago. He has three top-10 finishes here lifetime.

Westwood was fourth here last year and has racked up back-to-back runner-up finishes, hence the low price at +1800. Scott has three top-15 finishes to go with his lone win here.

If Westwood has turned back the clock, maybe Luke Donald can do the same. He was 11th here last year and has several top-10 finishes in the past. Speaking of older dudes, Graeme McDowell has four top-10 finishes and a 14th in his career. Charl Schwartzel has been 17th and 16th the last two years to go along with top 10s in 2013 and 2012.

Outside of the guys with a win or a lot of high finishes here, Wyndham Clark has been 11th and seventh the last two years. Byeong Hun An has a couple of top-five finishes over the last three years. Berger was fourth last year and second back in 2015. Luke List has a couple of top-10 finishes, but has missed the last two cuts.
<h3><strong><u>Handicap &amp; Picks</u></strong></h3>
The shortest price on my list this week is going to be Brendan Steele at +4000. Steele has made seven cuts in a row overall and was fourth in The Honda Classic last year. He had three straight top-15 finishes from 2015-17. He was seventh in SG: Tee-to-Green here last season.

Matthew NeSmith is +9000. He’s tied for second in ball striking among the players in this field. He was in a great form cycle for a seventh, 16th, and 20th recently, but has missed two straight cuts. He was 38th in his first career start here. This is a good price on a ball striker and we’ve seen how well ball strikers do in Florida with the most recent winners.

One thing I would look to do here is fade Lee Westwood in matchups. Westwood spoke about being tired for the final round in his post-tournament media scrum. I’m a little surprised he isn’t skipping this event, but he’s in the field for now. He’s 47 and the Florida sun can be a lot. He’s been in the thick of two straight events on tough courses and he really sprayed the ball around on Sunday. He’s a fade guy for me.

Find out who I like to win in this Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics showdown.</p><h3>OAKLAND ATHLETICS VS WASHINGTON NATIONALS BETTING PICK</h3><p>The Pick: Washington Nationals -134</p><p>This game will be played at Nationals Park at 1:35 ET on Sunday, August 13th.</p><h3>WHY BET THE WASHINGTON NATIONALS:</h3><ul><li>Over their previous five games as the underdog, the Athletics are just 2-3 straight-up.</li><li>Washington is on a four game winning streak when favored on the moneyline.</li><li>The Athletics are just 0-2 in Ken Waldichuk's last two starts.</li></ul><h3>OAKLAND ATHLETICS SEEK TO IMPROVE THEIR ROAD RECORD</h3><p>This season, the Athletics have an overall series record of 9-27-1 and are currently 5th in the AL West. Oakland's overall record is 33-84, which includes their current two game losing streak. On the road, the Athletics are 15-43 and 18-41 at home.</p><p><p>Ken Waldichuk takes the mound for Oakland, boasting a 2-7 record. The right-hander has made 26 appearances this season, posting an ERA of 6.30 and a K/9 of 9.16. His FIP stands at 5.37, while his opponents' OBP is .368.</p></p><p>Ken Waldichuk was unable to secure a win in his most recent start, as he pitched six innings and allowed two runs. Despite the quality start, the Athletics were unable to come away with a victory, falling to the Rangers 5-3.</p><p>The Athletics have been one of the top power lineups in the league of late, having hit 4 home runs over their last five games. Compared to other clubs, this is 7th best in that span. For the season, they are ranked 20th in home runs and 27th in slugging percentage. Overall, Oakland is averaging 3.5 runs per game (29th).</p><p>JJ Bleday has been a major contributor to the Athletics' offense in recent games, leading the team with two home runs over their last five contests. The slugger has hit 10 long balls so far this season and holds a batting average of .203.</p><h3>WILL THE WASHINGTON NATIONALS TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS AT HOME?</h3><p>Winners of two straight games, the Nationals are in 5th place in the NL East. So far, they have a series win percentage of 39% (14-22-2). Washington has gone 28-32 on the road this season compared to 24-34 at home.</p><p><p>Washington starter Trevor Williams will take the mound today hoping to keep the ball in the park after giving up a home-run in five consecutive appearances. His 2023 campaign has been a mixed bag thus far, with a 5-7 record and an ERA of 5.00. The right-hander has tallied 86 strikeouts and boasts a K/9 figure of 6.83, but he has also issued an average of 3.02 walks per 9 innings.</p></p><p>Trevor Williams' most recent start against the Phillies saw him surrender six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings, resulting in a loss for the Nationals by a score of 8-4.</p><p>During their last five games, Washington is the 18th ranked offense in terms of batting average. In these games, they have hit a combined .226 and are averaging 3.6 runs per game. Across the entire season, the Nationals are hitting .259 with an OBP of .319 while averaging 4.3 runs per contest. This figure puts them 18th in the league.</p><p>Lane Thomas has been a major contributor to the Nationals' offensive success this season, leading the team in home runs with 20 over the course of the year. His batting average of .284 is impressive, but he is currently listed as questionable on the team's injury report. In their last ten games, Thomas has hit four home runs and will be a key factor in determining their success going forward.</p>

Oakland Athletics vs Washington Nationals Betting Pick & Prediction 8/13/23

One of my favorite futures to consider is the Home Run King prop. To my recollection, winner Peter Alonso wasn’t even listed anywhere before the season. You could find Eugenio Suarez at 80/1 and he finished second. Jorge Soler was third and also not listed.

It seems unlikely that somebody so far off the radar could win it this season, but you never know. The really unfortunate thing for readers of the guide is that it came out so early this season that a lot of sportsbooks either didn’t have odds up or didn’t have a big collection of players listed. There were 162 players listed last year at BetOnline when I wrote up the article. This year, there are 29. At time of writing, Bovada had 25. It is a real bummer that we cannot go far enough down the rabbit hole to look at some extreme long shots.

The <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline</strong> </a>prices range from +1000 to +6600 and the <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bovada"><strong>Bovada</strong> </a>numbers range from +800 to +5000. We’ll make the most of it, but I’ll try to throw in some other names that I may like from a long shot standpoint.

Before we get into the odds, let’s get into a few things to help narrow down the field. First, I need guys that hit fly balls. Ten players hit at least 40 homers last season – Alonso, Suarez, Soler, Cody Bellinger, Mike Trout, Christian Yelich, Alex Bregman, Nolan Arenado, Ronald Acuna Jr., and Nelson Cruz. Trout was 2nd in FB%. Bregman was 8th. Arenado was 12th. Bellinger was 22nd. Suarez was 23rd. Alonso was 29th. Soler was 31st. Cruz was 38th. Acuna was 60th. Yelich was 74th. All of those are out of 135 qualified hitters.

Ideally, I would like guys that pull the ball. Suarez was 3rd, Bellinger was 16th. Soler was 21st. Alonso was 25th. Bregman was 29th. Arenado was 54th, but his ballpark renders that less important. It isn’t a be-all, end-all since so many of these guys have elite power to all fields, but it does matter to me.

Extreme strikeout rates are typically bad. Suarez was the only player with a K% in the bottom 10 to hit at least 40 homers. Alonso was 15th, with Acuna Jr. 16th and Soler 17th. Walks seem to be less detrimental, as Trout was 1st in BB%, Bregman was 3rd, Bellinger was 11th, and Yelich was 13th.

I’m looking for guys that have elite contact quality metrics, put a good number of balls in play in the air, and pull the ball more often than anything else.

Because home runs are a counting stat, we have to be really careful with guys that have major injury issues or are coming off of procedures. To me, that would actually eliminate Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Eugenio Suarez, and even Joey Gallo. Gallo is also moving to a different park and an environment that will suppress power when the roof is closed. The hot, open air of Globe Life Park will be missed by the power hitters.

Any one of those four guys could win the Home Run King crown, but they are not worth my money because of those concerns.

Who is on my list? First, Yordan Alvarez at +1400. Alvarez hit 50 home runs between Triple-A and the Major Leagues last season with prolific power. I mentioned that Alvarez is actually a guy I like for the MVP at 100/1, even though he will predominantly play DH and the voters may hold that against him. Alvarez showcased violent contact quality and didn’t even carry all that high of a FB%. He also used the whole field with his power. As the Astros work with him to get out in front of the ball more, he is likely to elevate and pull, which is likely to increase his home run total.

Alvarez was 7th in Barrels/PA%, which is a very good indicator of elite power and contact quality. Among those in contention here, Nelson Cruz was 1st, Mike Trout was 3rd, Miguel Sano was 4th, and Aaron Judge was 7th. The difference for Alvarez was either a lower launch angle and lower Hard Hit% relative to the other guys. As he sees pitchers around the league again, I fully expect those areas to improve.

Another guy I like at +2500 is Franmil Reyes of the Indians. Reyes goes from the marine air of Petco Park to Progressive Field for the full season. Cleveland’s ballpark does play better for left-handed batters with the 19-foot wall in left field to punish righties, but Reyes does have immense power to all fields. He was 14th in Barrel% last season, but his 51% Hard Hit% ranked in the 98th percentile and his exit velocity was in the 99th percentile.

Reyes does strike out a lot, but he doesn’t walk as much as several of the other hitters on this list. That should give him something of an advantage by having more opportunities to put balls in play. The one big area of concern for Reyes is his lower launch angle, but the Indians have morphed several of their players into launch angle disciples, like Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez.

Lindor’s launch angle went from 7.7 degrees in 2016 to 13.6 degrees in 2017 and peaked at 14.5 degrees in 2018. Ramirez went from 9.4 degrees in 2015 to 12.9 in 2016 to 14.8 in 2017 to 18.8 in 2018 and then 19.8 last season.

Now that the Indians have Reyes, they can look to unlock his power potential even further. With his violent contact quality, don’t be surprised if he flirts with 50 homers this season.

Lastly, at +4000, Miguel Sano’s value is too good to pass up. Sano was 4th in Barrels/PA% last season and had the highest Hard Hit% in all of baseball at 57.2%. That means that 57.2% of Sano’s balls in play were hit at 95+ mph. Sano hit 34 home runs in only 439 plate appearances. His exit velocity and Hard Hit% were both in the 100th percentile. He, too, increased his launch angle last season. After coming in at 13.2 in 2017 and 12.9 in 2018, his launch angle skyrocketed to 15.9 degrees in 2019. The high K% is a concern here with Sano, but the contact quality metrics are exceptional for hitting for power. He’s always hit the ball violently and his average exit velocity was just about 7 mph higher than league average.

The +4000 price tag is a disservice to his power.

My three picks for Home Run King are Yordan Alvarez, Franmil Reyes, and Miguel Sano.

Getting hot at the right time can take you a long way in college basketball. Staying hot is the trick. The Oregon State Beavers have to hope that a five-day break doesn’t wind up being a cool-down period. Wins in five in a row and eight of nine have this dangerous #12 seed matched up with the #8 Loyola Chicago Ramblers in a Sweet 16 matchup that few people saw coming.

Loyola Chicago’s path to get here went through top-seeded Illinois, a team that many people felt was good enough to make the Final Four or maybe even win the NCAA Tournament. The Ramblers had other ideas with a 71-58 win to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three NCAA Tournaments.

These lines have been up all week with plenty of time to marinate and <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bovada"><strong>Bovada Sportsbook</strong></a> is showing Loyola Chicago -6.5 with a total of 125.5.

Oregon State was a middling team in what was thought to be a good, but not great, Pac-12 Conference. Through 16 conference games and 22 total games, the Beavers were 11-11 with a 7-9 record in league play. Then something happened. A 59-57 win over California seems like an odd catalyst, but Oregon State won that game without making a single three-point shot.

In the eight games since, seven of them wins, the Beavers are shooting north of 40% from three, including 16-of-41 here in the NCAA Tournament in wins over Tennessee and Oklahoma State. It isn’t all unicorns and rainbows for the Beavers, though. Many believe that the game against the Cowboys should not only have been closer, but could very well have gone in the other direction.

Oklahoma State was 10-of-36 on two-point shots, including a 5-of-16 mark at the rim. Given that Oregon State ranks 236th in 2P% defense at 51.2%, it is easy to see why observers would think that. Oregon State doesn’t really stand out in any way from a full-season standpoint, but is in the top 20 in adjusted offensive efficiency over the last 10 games and the top 60 in adjusted defensive efficiency.

As always, though, we have to wonder if something just clicked. Wayne Tinkle is a solid head coach. So what if the Beavers don’t have great numbers for the full season. They have great numbers now and current form is a major factor in March.

<h3><strong><u>Loyola Chicago Ramblers</u></strong></h3>
If current form is a major factor, well, the Loyola Chicago Ramblers look to be on another level. It wasn’t like the Ramblers squeaked by Illinois. No. Not even close. Loyola Chicago held Illinois to .875 points per possession. The Illini had been held under a point per possession just twice otherwise this season. That was against Purdue and in a weird home game against Maryland.

The .875 points per possession were easily the worst for the Illini. That was the job that Porter Moser’s team did defensively. Oh, yeah, and the Ramblers also had 1.071 PPP against Illinois. The game was played to 66 possessions, which tied for the third-slowest game of the season for the Illini. A Missouri Valley Conference team dictated the pace and flow of a game against the Big Ten Tournament champs and a #1 seed.

Had Loyola Chicago played immediately after beating Big Brother, it might have been a tougher spot. Playing five days later should help the team come back to earth a little bit and prepare for this game. I think it’s actually a positive to have a little layoff here, whereas I think it is a negative for Oregon State.

The Ramblers are ninth nationally in eFG% offense. They are fourth in 2P% offense against an Oregon State defense that struggles to defend in the paint. There really are a lot of things pointing in Loyola’s favor here.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
My biggest question about this game has to do with the spread relative to the total. This is effectively a three-possession spread in a game that will be low on possessions and probably low on points. The total is in the mid-120s, which is actually fairly high for a Loyola game given some of their other scores this season.

Still, I don’t see Oregon State stacking up from an efficiency standpoint in a game where Loyola dictates the tempo. The layoff for the Beavers hurts their momentum, which is an intangible concept, but teams that are riding a high want to keep playing. You could say the same for Loyola, but I believe a few days to process beating Illinois is a good thing before getting back to work.
