As the NBA packages itself for the restart of the 2019-20 season, they certainly want to come back out of the gate quickly. And part of that is to match up the two top teams in the Western Conference. And having been plagued by injuries prior to the start of the season, they can only benefit from the extra rest, from a health standpoint.

As teams get back in the swing of things, a bench with some substance is going to be a good thing to have. Not that the Lakers don't have one; there are veterans like Dwight Howard and Danny Green, who have been in playoff situations. But the Clippers have the best group of reserves in the league, when you consider the talents of Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Reggie Jackson and Marcus Morris, among others.

Yeah, that might afford the Clippers an advantage, especially as the Lakers will be missing guards Rajon Rondo and Avery Bradley.

Still, we'd like to focus on something else - the total.

It is the belief here that shooting may not be so sharp coming out of the gate, and this a different location than the arena they both use in L.A. The idea that they will come out on fire doesn't seem plausible.

But we know these two squads can play defense. And that is something they can carry with them. So scoring is bound to be difficult. You might argue that the team that relies more on the long-distance shots is at a disadvantage. On that basis, it would seem to put us in the column of the Lakers, who have attempted fewer triples.

But you have to look closer.

These teams have played three times, tallying 214, 217 and 215 points. That's pretty consistent, and you see that the number put up by the oddsmaker reflects that. The Clippers, in the process of winning two of the three meetings, have held the Lakers to 43.5%, 40.6% and 44.8% shooting, all well below their season average.

It is apparent that the Clippers have been successful in taking the Lakers a little out of their game offensively.

In each meeting, the Lakers have exceeded their average in attempts from three-point land, where they ranked 23rd in the league at 31.4 (they were also 22nd in makes and 17th in three-point accuracy). In fact, they averaged almost 38 per game.

As it is, even though these teams both rank over 100 in the "Pace" category (indicating average possessions per 48 minutes), they have both trended toward the "under" (Lakers 52.4%, Clippers 54%). In fact, the only team that has gone under the total more often than Doc Rivers' team is, believe it or not, the Houston Rockets.

So the conclusions you can draw from this are (a) that they indeed have been effective defensively (which they have, as they are both in the top five in Defensive Rating) and (b) they are somewhat overrated by the betting public (and/or oddsmakers) in terms of sheer firepower.

The feeling here is that should have made an adjustment of some kind downward. We'll go "under."

One of the things that was critical in building out this roster was to surround James and Davis with players who had "been there before."

Three-time Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard would have to be considered one of those players. And so they will directly challenge the Blazers, who may have to play Hassan Whiteside more than they intended.

Unless they can dominate things up front, against a Portland team that has fortified itself in that area, this might open the door for the Blazers to win at least a couple of games.

So why is this?

Well, there are fewer runs scored. And that's by design.

The Korean Baseball Organization, the "big leagues" of baseball in Korea, made a bold decision after the 2018 season - that they would, in effect, "deaden" the baseballs they use in competition. According to a rather comprehensive article that was published at FanGraphs, they reduced the COR, or "coefficient of restitution," which would prevent the ball from traveling as far as it did before when hit.

Part of it involved making the ball larger and heavier.

Not that it was starting to resemble a softball game, but it was very offense-oriented. In 2017 and 2018, the collective league batting average was .286, with OPS figures of .791 and .803, respectively. While the slugging percentage across Major League Baseball was .409 in 2018, the corresponding KBO figure was .450. And that's quite a difference.

When the KBO went to the new ball, the reduction in offensive production was dramatic. Of course, that mostly manifested itself after a mild controversy where they were not satisfied with the balls supplied by the manufacturer early in the season, which were still too "lively."

So that .286 batting average got reduced to .267. The league-wide slugging percentage dropped from .450 to .385 - a drop of 65 points. And the league's collective OPS was .722, representing an 81-point drop.

Teams averaged almost a run less per game in 2019, as opposed to the previous five-year period (roughly 5.5 to 4.6). And the home run rate was down a third.

There were also half the number of home runs per game in the KBO compared to MLB numbers. The Kiwoom Heroes led the league with 5.42 runs per game in 2019; that would have only been good for sixth place in the 2018 season.

So yes, of course there has been an effect.

It would appear obvious to <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betanysports"><strong>BetAnySports</strong> </a>patrons that when there's a lot of offense, it can take its toll on a pitching staff. The collective KBO earned run average was down a full run in 2019 from what it was the year before. In 2018, there were 55 shutouts in the league. In 2019 that jumped to 103. In 2019, however, strikeouts were down by more than 100 per team. Apparently with less juice in the baseball, hitters were more content to make contact than to swing for the fences; an action that made for a long fly-out much more frequently than it had the season prior.

In 2018, there were only two pitchers who worked more than 100 innings with a sub-3.00 ERA. In 2019 there were seven. In 2018 there were 43 players with over 200 plate appearances and a batting average of .300 or higher. In 2019 that dropped to 23.

Did teams opt to utilize more speed in the process of playing a "small ball" game? Well, kind of, although we're not sure that a jump from 928 stolen bases to 993 is conclusive.

But maybe speed should be an option, because the effect of the slugger is being mitigated. In 2018 there were 33 hitters with 20 or more home runs. In 2019 there were only eleven.

It's still early in the 2020 season, but this is what it looks like through the first 15 games that were played on the schedule:

* The offensive slashline for the KBO is .254/.322/.397. That means batting averages continue to drop, while slugging is up, and OPS is slightly down.

* League-wide WHIP is 1.31 (it was 1.40 last season)

* There were 28 homers in the first 15 games, or 1.87 per game, which actually represents an increase over 2019 numbers (1.4).

* However, team runs per game, which were 4.55 last year, are down to 4.5 through fifteen contests.

So on balance, the KBO seems to have accomplished its mission. At the same time, we would imagine that teams will eventually be able to adjust a tad better this season to the un-juiced ball in terms of the way they strategize to score runs.

The New Orleans Pelicans would have liked to have been in the NBA playoffs, but that isn't happening.

In three games in which his activity has stepped up (they sat him down for the back end of a back-to-back against Washington), he has scored 72 points in 74 minutes.

But the fact is, he should have been playing more. Unless it is the kind of injury that would threaten to sideline him, which doesn't seem to be the case, he should have been the go-to guy for at least 32 minutes per game. He had professed that he was working on a lot of "fundamentals" during the COVID-19 break, but players who carry a lot of weight will have a tendency to put on additional weight during periods of inactivity like this.

If he can't be on the floor for all that long because he isn't in the right kind of shape, that is going to be a problem going forward.

New Orleans has scored 7.4 points per 100 possessions more with Zion on the floor than when he is off it. So naturally it is important that he can be out there as much as possible.

And he isn't going to be out there at all on Tuesday, due to what the team has listed as soreness in his right knee. Jrue Holiday and Brandon Ingram are also reportedly sitting it out.

So if the NBA wasn't happy with Zion's 29 total minutes in the first two games, they're surely apoplectic about this development.

Point guard De'Aaron Fox, who had 30 points in the previous win over New Orleans, has a shoulder injury. He won't play either, although he may play in the finale. He has averaged 26.2 points and 7.3 assists in the bubble.

Luke Walton told reporters, “These are two more great opportunities for us, so we have to be ready to go and take advantage of this opportunity.”

But we wonder if these players feel differently. Not that they have gone balls-to-the-wall to this point, but now there is nothing left to really play for, and if you're on a "no-hoper" team, you probably can't wait to get out of this restricted environment and just go home.

And in a league that sometimes looks like a merry-go-round for coaches, who knows how long Walton or Alvin Gentry (Pelicans) are going to be able to stick around. And is Sacramento GM Vlade Divac so secure?

For my part, I kind of like Walton's attitude a little better. And there's less attrition for the Kings to deal with. While the Pelicans have packed it in, Sacramento should be able to riddle them with Bogdan Bogdanovic, who had 35 points in the previous meeting, and won't be impeded by the likes of Holiday. So it's the Kings who'll hold court.... ON the court.

It's not really all that curious that Columbus would be favored in this game, because there are some things that have to be perceived as advantages for them. For one thing, Chicago's power play is looking a lot weaker since two of the members of that special team - Alex DeBrincat and Adam Boqvist - were placed on the COVID list, so until further notice, coach Jeremy Colliton is going to be searching for a combination that can make things happen. They had been successful, converting 36% of their chances, until coming up empty two nights ago against Nashville.

But really, the Columbus power play has been a disaster, scoring just twice in 22 chances (9.1%). So the edge there really depends on how you choose to look at it.

The Blue Jackets, truth be told, have been through a bit of upheaval with the recent trade they pulled off with Winnipeg. That deal brought hometown kid Jack Roslovic to the fold, along with All-Star winger Patrik Laine, as the disgruntled center Pierre-Luc Dubois was dealt off. So those guys have to be worked into the mix, and there are others, like Mikko Koivu, who spent 15 years with the Minnesota Wild, and Max Domi, who are still kind of getting used to their new surroundings. If Dubois was a disruptive force, that trade becomes a huge positive, but the return can't be fully measured just yet.

The 'Hawks had holes on defense last season, allowing more shots on goal than anyone last season. Losing Boxiest is a blow. And signing Madison Bower provides only cool comfort. When they lost goalie Corey Crawford, it was time to start all over in net, and there were three candidates. Collin Delia has allowed five goals in each of his two outings. Malcolm Sub ban has surrendered eight goals in two games, and has in general been inconsistent during his brief NHL career.

The guy who has shown something is Kevin Lankinen, who led his native Finland to the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2019, sizzling with a 1.50 GAA. After a rough start where he allowed five goals, he's only allowed four goals in three games since (outside the shootout phase, of course). The other night against the Predators he stopped 41 of 42 shots through regulation and the overtime period.

He looks like this team's logical solution. We have to believe Colliton sees it that way too. We are writing this under the assumption that Lankinen is going to get the call for Friday's game. If that is the case (and as the game approaches you can be more certain), we like Chicago as a home dog over a Columbus team that has no day off and has allowed almost as many shots per game as the 'Hawks have. If it is Delia or Subban, we don't quite trust them to hold the fort down in front of a penetrable defense, so we'd side with Columbus.

The Kansas Jayhawks are a work in progress. But haven't we been saying that for many years about this program? Now they turn to Dave Aranda, who became a "hot assistant" (just like Joe Brady, who joined Rhule in Carolina) as defensive coordinator for the LSU Tigers, who won the national championship. Aranda insists that this Baylor program, which lost to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game in 2019, can win a national crown too.

He has a lot of offensive assets returning, including quarterback Charlie Brewer, who threw for 3161 yards and 21 touchdowns, plus three of the top four receivers. But he must replace nine lost starters on defense. So he'll get a chance to apply his specialty right away.

The question is whether this much matters against Kansas, which may never get out of its rebuild. Despite only seven starters returning out of 22, Miles declined to bring some experience in by way of Juco transfers and instead added to the inexperience with freshmen. So he has to wait for people to develop. Do fans and administrators have that kind of patience? The cupboard has been bare for a long time; in fact, it has been twelve years since Kansas won a conference game on the road.

And recent series trends don't fall their way at all. Baylor has won the last ten meetings. They have covered nine of those. They have outscored Kansas by 41 points a game over the last eight. They led 34-0 at the half of last year's game, on the way to a 61-6 blowout. Kansas stumbled and fumbled its way to six turnovers. And Baylor had the 507-280 yardage edge.

We won't necessarily say that Baylor is a better team now than they were then, but they will have some new wrinkles on offense with Larry Fedora coming in as the coordinator. They have enough depth left over to make a difference on defense. And Kansas is actually "greener."

College Football Picks -- Baylor May Keep Piling On Against Kansas

<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Milwaukee Bucks</strong>&nbsp;didn’t do all that bad shooting the ball in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, connecting on 45.5% from the field and 44.4% from three-point range, which is much better than usual.</p>

Giannis had 20 points and 17 rebounds, but he experienced some woes at the free throw line, where he took twelve of the Bucks’ 16 attempts. Honestly, the free throws were the real difference in this ball game. Milwaukee’s metrics weren’t really that bad.</p>

In fact, his effective field-goal percentage of 70.6% coming into the series was third best in the playoffs. However, he was going to face something of a challenge in Brook Lopez, his Milwaukee counterpart who had held opponents to 51.2% shooting at the rim.</p>



<p>Well, all Ayton did the score 22 points with 19 rebounds, and, for a player the only went to the line seven times in the previous series, he hit all six of his attempts from the charity stripe. Again, another case where the free throws made a big difference.</p>



<p>So, what do the Bucks have to do to turn things around on Thursday night? Honestly, if they can even out that free-throw situation, they wouldn’t be in bad shape. Throughout the playoffs, Milwaukee has led all teams in rebounding percentage (53.1%), which held up pretty good in Game 1, as well as shooting percentage and point differential in the paint. The highest scoring team in the league during the regular season (120.1 ppg), the Bucks we’re allowing just 105 points per 100 possessions in postseason play, which was best among the 16 playoff participants.</p>



<p>Inasmuch as Giannis was not likely to be 100% – a key factor – considering he had 80 points in the two regular season meetings – &nbsp;Khris Middleton did pretty well to fill some of the vacuum, scoring 29 points. And the Bucks did a very good job keeping Phoenix from taking any kind of control from beyond the arc; Booker, for example, made just one of eight triples, while Jae Crowder missed all five of his attempts from long range.</p>



<p>But Booker does not earn his money shooting from downtown. Between Chris Paul and himself, they have been third and fourth highest scoring averages from mid-range in the postseason. Milwaukee allowed its opposition to throw up more three-pointers than any other team but one during the regular season. So if you don’t have to make your living shooting long-range jumpers, you can neutralize one of their stratagems.</p>



<p>Giannis will need some support out there &nbsp;So the Bucks need Middleton to continue scoring, Lopez to be active, and point guard Jrue Holiday to take either Paul (32 points on Tuesday) or Booker off their game. But we think they can make the necessary adjustments, and should get more of a break from the officials, so we will be grabbing the points.</p>
