The Ravens have been hit with a load of COVID-19 cases; they had 19 people on their reserve list because of it, last we looked. And so their hopes of gaining any ground in the AFC North race are diminished.

There were reports of the threat of a wildcat strike among Ravens players if the game was not moved back. And that would have touched off all kinds of conflicts between the NFL and the Players Association, because it is clear that the league is bound and determined to get this game in.

Baltimore is 6-4 straight-up (4-5-1 against the point spread), and that puts them in third place, four full games behind Pittsburgh (10-0 SU, 8-2 ATS) in the division.

The Ravens, by our calculations, had 20 players on their COVID-19 reserve list by the time they boarded the flight to Pittsburgh on Tuesday for this Wednesday game that perhaps should not even be played. There are certainly absences on both sides of the ball, but the offense may be hit harder, because the reigning league MVP is not going to be part of the starting lineup.

Lamar Jackson has been declared out of this game, as has running back Mark Ingram, wideout Willie Snead and tight end Mark Andrews. There are absences on the offensive line as well.

Taking Jackson's place is another Heisman winner, Robert Griffin III, who is certainly not unfamiliar with this kind of offensive scheme. So there will be some continuity along those lines, although you'll see a notable firepower difference. More on that in a minute.

Pittsburgh does not necessarily look like a total wrecking crew, as you might expect out of an undefeated team. But they can operate with a high level of efficiency on offense. It is true that James Conner, the starting tailback (645 yards) is going to be a COVID-19 casualty. The ground game has admittedly not been Pittsburgh's best friend; the Steelers topped 100 rushing yards in each of the first five games, but they have totaled only 340 over the last five.

However, Ben Roethlisberger (67%, 2534 yards, 24 TD's, five INT's) has done a great job of distributing the ball around. Just look at his receivers' yardage totals:

The problem with quarterbacks who operate like Jackson are that at this level (the NFL), it catches up to you sooner or later. At some point, defensive coordinators wise up to what they are doing and if they can't stop him, they can at least contain him, putting more stress on what he can do with his arm.

This has been reflected in a couple of ways. One is that the Ravens, who were second in the NFL in total offense last year, are now 26th in yards gained per drive. And that is quite a difference. And Jackson has been vocal in his remarks about what he called the "predictability" of the offense; that opponents somehow knew which plays were coming and were able to call them out from the other side of the line.

That's totally believable; it is likely that offensive coordinator Greg Roman has built a simplified offensive scheme around Jackson in much the same way that the Redskins did it for Griffin in his rookie season of 2012. So we are mentioning this for obvious reasons.

What the offensive staff in Washington - which included the likes of current NFL head coaches Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur and Kyle Shanahan - found was that Griffin did not know how to read defenses, so they had to create something very simple to hide his weaknesses and emphasize what he could actually do.

My expectation is that this isn't so much different than Jackson has gone through. What is different about the situation now is that while Griffin has never stood out as a dropback passer - he just doesn't have an accurate enough arm - he has never been able to approach what he could in the running game since he blew out his knee at the end of his rookie season.

So what you have here is a guy who, years ago, was a lot like Jackson, but now slower and less elusive, and has considerably less weaponry around him. And, we might add, no time to really prepare, since the Ravens' only practice in a ten-day period was shut down by the NFL because of virus concerns. Pittsburgh gave up 475 yards in the first meeting and benefited from four Baltimore turnovers. They'll be charged up, and their pass rush will have some success. I've simply got to lay the points.

<p>North Carolina is looking to maintain a perfect start to the season when it hosts Notre Dame at Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels are slight -1.5 favorites on <a href="https://www.bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bookmaker/">BookMaker Sportsbook</a>, while the total is set at 56 points. These inter-conference rivals have faced once in 2021, and the Fighting Irish won that game 44-34 in Indiana.</p>

<p>The Notre Dame Fighting Irish entered a new college football season with two losses, but they managed to beat the California Golden Bears at home. They perhaps didn’t deserve this win as the visitors weren’t a worse side, but the Irish still prevailed with a 24-17 victory.</p>



<p>Drew Pyne completed 17 of 23 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Tyree, who led the team with 44 receiving yards on five receptions, caught one of Pyne’s TD passes, while Audric Estime was solid on the ground with 76 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. Notre Dame registered even six sacks in this one, and DL Jacob Lacey led the bench with two, while Jayson Ademilola and Isaiah Foskey had 1.5 apiece.</p>



<p>QB Tyler Buchner sustained a high-grade AC joint sprain in his shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery to repair the issue.</p>



<p><strong>Tar Heels keep marching on</strong></p>



<p>The North Carolina Tar Heels are only one of two ACC Coastal teams without a loss yet, and after defeating FAMU and Appalachian State, they beat the Georgia State Panthers on the road. They did fail to cover a -7 spread in a 35-28 victory, but what’s important for the Tar Heels, they managed to get W despite committing three turnovers opposite Georgia State’s zero.</p>



<p>North Carolina didn’t allow points in the final 15 minutes and scored a touchdown to secure a win after leading 21-10 at halftime. Drake Maye completed 19 of 24 passes for 284 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Kobe Paysour (73 yards on five receptions) and Kamari Morales (71 yards on three receptions) connected with Maye in the endzone, while the Tar Heels scored three rushing touchdowns. Omarion Hampton led all the runners with 110 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Cedric Gray and Power Echols combined for 24 tackles.</p>

Given that Notre Dame is scoring just 18.3 ppg, I am going with the home side that is among the top 20 in college football in both passing yards (310.0) and rushing yards (237.3). Drake Maye already has 930 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and just one interception, and I am backing him to have another strong showing on Saturday.</p>

Another good battle between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State fell on the side of the Cowboys, so we got to rope and ride a winner on Monday night to start the week off on a positive note. Now it’s time for the Tuesday card.

The March 2 slate is highlighted by that big Baylor vs. West Virginia battle with a weird 5 p.m. ET tip, so that won’t be in the spotlight for us. Instead, we’ll look at a later tip with a focus on Duke vs. Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets are favored by a bucket at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bovada"><strong>Bovada Sportsbook</strong></a>, but the line is showing signs of possibly coming back down to 1.5. The total is sitting at 146.

With Duke allegedly on the bubble, this game, like every game, is a big one for the Blue Devils.
<h3><strong><u>Duke Blue Devils</u></strong></h3>
Jalen Johnson could very well be a great player in the NBA, but his loss seems to be addition by subtraction to a degree for Duke. The only thing more sporadic than Johnson’s playing time was his production. He had 18 points in 24 minutes in the first Georgia Tech game, which was really his second-best showing of the season. He had 19 against Coppin State and 24 in a loss to Pitt. He did have 19 rebounds to go with his 19 points against Coppin State, but, well, that was Coppin State.

The Blue Devils won three straight after Johnson said he was opting out, including a win over Virginia that put Duke back in the NCAA Tournament discussion. The loss this past weekend to Louisville put a damper on those hopes, but wins over Georgia Tech and North Carolina to finish out the regular season would go a long way.

Standout sophomore Matthew Hurt put the team on his back in that loss to Louisville. He had 37 points and seven rebounds in his 43 minutes before fouling out late in the game. Wendell Moore Jr. was the only other player in double figures with 13. This has been an ongoing problem for Duke. There simply aren’t enough consistent scorers on the roster and it was a big enough problem to cost them a big game at home on Saturday.

In the win over GA Tech back on January 26, there were four Blue Devils in double figures, led by DJ Steward with 19. In league action, Duke is second in 2P% at 55.3% and fourth in 3P% at 36.4%, but ranks eighth in assist rate because this is not a team that shares the basketball well.

Perhaps the biggest reason why Duke is on the bubble or maybe even under the cut line is a 2-7 record in games decided by six or fewer points. Hurt tried valiantly to put the team on his shoulders and will them to a win last time out while getting basically no help. We’ll see if help arrives here.

<h3><strong><u>Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets</u></strong></h3>
Georgia Tech is playing some pretty good ball down the stretch run. There aren’t many bad losses on the resume for the Yellow Jackets this season either. Their season started with a grueling 4OT loss to Georgia State and then a 10-point loss to Mercer. After that, the losses are Florida State, Virginia, and Duke on the road, Virginia at home, and then Clemson on the road by just two points.

Josh Pastner has done a pretty solid job overall in Atlanta. There were a couple of transitional years as he put his stamp on the program, but this is a team that could very well make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010. Offensive prowess from a senior-laden team is a big reason why. The Yellow Jackets rank 17th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 37th in eFG%. They are 34th in the nation in 2P% and 86th in 3P%.

In ACC play, Georgia Tech is third in all of those categories except eFG%, where the Yellow Jackets rank fourth. They do have the highest TO% on defense. To be totally honest, the statistical resume of this team suggests that they should be better than 9-6 in league play. This is a bad rebounding team, which has been a hindrance, and opponents have shot 36.6% on threes, but Georgia Tech does have the second-lowest 3P Rate against in conference action.

Most of the losses for Georgia Tech in league action have come against stout defensive teams. The loss to Duke is the exception. In that game, Duke was 18-of-22 at the free throw line. Georgia Tech was just 4-of-5. Late-game fouling didn’t even really come into play until the absolute end. It was just an imbalanced call of the game.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
A lot of the metrics sites do have this line higher than 1.5 or 2, so we are definitely seeing that “must-win” bubble talk premium on Duke to a degree here. The Blue Devils are playing a bit better than their full body of work, so current form could also be playing a little bit of a role in the line.

But this is also a case of a known commodity in Duke against a mostly forgotten ACC team in Georgia Tech that has gone a decade without an NCAA Tournament berth. To me, that puts the value on the Yellow Jackets, who have the better body of work overall and some pretty good stats.

I’ll ride with the Yellow Jackets here. I do think this price could go down as a result of public money, so you’ll probably do better than -1.5 or -2 as the day goes along.

There are a lot of ways to interpret Game 1 between the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks. We won’t see another 5-of-31 performance from three in this series from the Bucks. On the other hand, we won’t see Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo combine to go 8-of-37. The Bucks prevailed 109-107 in overtime in a weird game with a lot of fluky occurrences.

That leaves us wondering what the two teams have in store for Game 2 on Monday night. Milwaukee is -4.5 at <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bookmaker/">Bookmaker Sportsbook</a></strong> with a total of 222.5. Game 1 had a line of 5.5 and a total of 227. Adjustments have been made in the betting markets, but have the adjustments been too big in nature? Let’s evaluate.

The reality of the situation is that the Heat should be happy about what transpired in Game 1. They failed to come away with the win, but likely saw the worst performance that they are going to see from Jimmy Butler, who did send the game to overtime with a layup at the horn, but it was one of only four makes for him in the game. He was 4-of-22 shooting, but did manage 17 points on the strength of seven free throws.

The Heat only shot 36.4% from the floor overall, as they were just 16-of-49 on two-point shots. Miami did sink 20 three-pointers in 50 attempts, though, which was a huge 3P Rate for them. During the regular season, 43.2% of their field goal attempts were threes, but they cranked it up to north of 50% in Game 1.

It worked, but also a team that shot under 36% from three shot 40% in Game 1 and it still wasn’t enough. Goran Dragic had 25 off the bench in the losing effort and Duncan Robinson, a 40.8% three-point shooter, was 7-of-13 beyond the arc. Butler and Adebayo were bad. Dragic and Robinson were good. It was nice to see some secondary scoring from the Heat, but their primary guys simply have to be better.

That would be the focus heading into Game 2. It seems clear that Miami is going to try to shoot over the top of the Milwaukee defense. It is far from a bad approach. The Bucks were 29th in 3P% defense at 38.4% during the regular season and surrendered the 40% rate in Game 1. Miami just needs Butler and Adebayo to be more involved in the fun.
<h2><strong><u>Milwaukee Bucks</u></strong></h2>
The Bucks got lucky to win Game 1, but some of the things that happened likely won’t be seen again. For example, Milwaukee was 5-of-31 from three. That means that Miami outscored Milwaukee by 45 points on three-point shots and still lost the game. The Bucks also left 13 points out there at the free throw line, including a 6-of-13 performance from Giannis Antetokounmpo, who had 26 points, but it was an ugly 26 points. Giannis was a 68.5% free throw shooter during the regular season.

The Bucks were fourth in 3P% during the regular season at 38.9%, so their Game 1 performance was truly a significant outlier. In fact, the Bucks were 15 spots higher than the Heat in terms of 3P%, but got outscored 60-15 on threes. Yeah, that probably won’t happen again. Only three players for the Bucks hit a trey. Six different Heat players made a three.

Milwaukee had 12 fast-break points to just two for Miami. That means that the Heat aren’t going to get a lot of easy buckets. They’ll have to work for everything that they get and that means sharing the ball around the perimeter quite a bit. Milwaukee missed a bunch of shots and still wound up with a significant edge on the glass.

The Bucks do have a weakness at defending corner threes and Miami exploited it in Game 1. It’ll be interesting to see how much Milwaukee adjusts to sell out on the perimeter. Opponents made nearly 45% of their corner threes against the Bucks. That was a shot that Miami took a lot during the season, but shot only 36.1% on, which ranked 26th.

The line moving down on this game is an overreaction to what we saw in Game 1. The Bucks may have only won by two, but a lot of outliers took place in this game that should even out in Milwaukee’s favor on Monday night. The number of -4.5 is too low as far as I’m concerned.

After a rough go last week, it’s been nice to find some winners on the hardwood coming out of the Super Bowl. With a huge Saturday card, we’ve got a lot to consider.

There aren’t a lot of late games tonight, which is a bummer because we like to pick evening matchups so that these previews can have a lot of lead time. It limits the available games on an otherwise huge college basketball slate. However, there is a game that looks like a good one with some actionable opportunities and it comes way under the radar in the Southland Conference between Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana.

So, we’re digging deep for this game. Here’s the thing. Money won in the Southland spends the same as money won in the ACC or the SEC. Games that are off the beaten path or listed on the “Added” board aren’t going to draw as much attention from oddsmakers and recreational bettors. They’re more focused on huge games. What that means is that line moves are more telling, sharper in nature, and a lot more respected.

To this point, we haven’t seen much movement on this game, but we may as the day goes along. Nicholls is one of the better teams in the Southland Conference. In a conference that doesn’t play a whole lot of defense, the Colonels are second in eFG% defense at 46.5%. They are second in 2P% defense at 44.7%. Most teams in the Southland have a lot of turnovers because it is a pretty careless conference overall with the basketball. Nicholls does not.

That could be one of the reasons why the Colonels aren’t as good as some of the other teams in this league, but they remain pretty balanced overall. In 10 conference games, Nicholls is second in TO% on offense, so they take very good care of the basketball. They are also third in 2P% on offense. They also like to push the tempo a bit and that is important in this game.

In the first meeting between these two teams, Nicholls won by 20 at home. The Colonels were 28-of-42 on two-point and the game was played to 77 possessions. Nicholls had 1.128 PPP in that matchup. Southeastern Louisiana only wound up to .869 PPP on 10-of-32 shooting from two and 8-of-25 from three, which was a definite outlier.

<h3><strong><u>Southeastern Louisiana</u></strong><strong><u> Lions</u></strong></h3>
Southeastern Louisiana is a 27.2% team from three-point land on the season, so that 8-of-25 showing very much stood out. The Lions have one goal on offense and that is to get to the free throw line. They are #1 in the country in free throw rate at 45%. They are 309th in the nation at 65.7% when they get to the stripe.

In that first game against Nicholls, SELA had 33 free throw attempts to just 16 for Nicholls. The Lions still lost the game by 20. They even made 23 of their 33 free throw attempts. It was not a banner evening for the Southeastern Louisiana offense. The other big skill for the Lions offense is that they pull down offensive rebounds. They are 50th in the nation in ORB%. They had seven in the game against Nicholls.

This is the worst offense in Southland Conference play. Their eFG% of 44.5% ranks 11th in the conference. They are shooting 27.7% on threes and just 46.5% on twos. They’ve been able to be reasonably competitive by the parade to the free throw line and the foul trouble that other teams are put into by their style of play. It doesn’t really seem like a very effective means of scoring points, especially with a low conversion rate at the free throw line.

This team is heavily dependent on Keon Clergeot, the 6-foot-1 senior that has taken 142 of the team’s 455 free throws. He’s shooting 78% on them, so he’s been good, but most of the rest of the roster has struggled to consistently score. Head coach David Kiefer works a lot of players into the rotation, but he has been able to get some great production recently out of Gus Okafor with three 20-point games over the last five. He really needs to rely more on his horses and he has been doing that lately.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
I know that the metrics sites are what they are and that they are spitting out accurate numbers based on the data that is there, but this line should be higher than -6. Nicholls won the first game by 20 and got outscored by 10 at the free throw line via Southeastern Louisiana’s only means of offense. SELA has one win against a team outside of the bottom 50 in college basketball and it was one of the biggest outliers of the season from three-point range.

This game is way under the radar to say the least, but I don’t think it winds up being all that competitive.
