The Chicago Bears are, at this moment, tied for the NFC North lead with a 5-1 record (4-2 against the points). And they can inch ahead of the Green Bay Packers with a victory in ESPN's Monday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. Game time for this encounter is 8:15 PM ET at SoFi Stadium, the Rams' new palace that is still not accommodating any fans.

Jimmie Graham has four touchdown receptions, but Allen Robinson is by far the top target (40 catches, 474 yards). But the weapons are few and far between. The injured Tarik Cohen is a notable absence, which is why the Bears were said to be interested in Le'Veon Bell.

The best unit on the field in this one is most probably the Chicago defense. They are atop the NFL in a number of different categories, including: completion percentage allowed (57%), touchdowns allowed per drive, TD percentage in the red zone (36.4%). They created a real nightmare for Carolina's Teddy Bridgewater a couple of weeks ago, picking him off twice, sacking him four times, and limiting him to 16 completions and a 50.4 QB rating.

Over the last couple of seasons the Bears have kept the Rams' defense very much off-balance, especially QB Jared Goff. In 2018 the Rams came into their game with the Bears averaging 34.9 points a game and were muffled, compiling just 214 yards and intercepting Goff four times. Todd Gurley was held to 28 rushing yards and Chicago won 15-6. Eddie Goldman was a dominant figure in that game, but he's not available to the Bears because he opted out of the season.

Gurley came back last year and had a strong game, with 133 yards from scrimmage. The Rams were unable to move smoothly through the air again, with Goff going just 11 for 18 for 173 yards. So it is safe to say that Chicago, whether they were working either Vic Fangio or Chuck Pagano's scheme, has what it takes to upset what coach Sean McVay wants to do, which is to use play action. Goff has thrown off play action on 45% of his pass attempts, so they like to do this extensively.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that the Rams have done a heck of a job on defense thus far. They've only allowed 5.9 yards per pass, and with Jalen Ramsey, they have a shutdown corner. The Rams are fifth best in the NFL in terms of yards allowed per drive. And they have forced their opponents to punt 44% of the time, and that's best in the league. By the way, Chicago punts on 42.6% of its drives.

I just don't know if there is any reason to believe that this game is going to produce a lot of points. So the most judicious move would be to go UNDER the total.

<p>The G3 Bewitch Stakes has been staged at Keeneland annually since 1962, with a field of fillies and mares competing over a distance of 1 ½ miles for a share of the $300,000 purse. This Grade Three has produced some historic moments throughout history, with another of fillies running in the race prior to competing in the Kentucky Oaks throughout its early history.</p>



<p>However, it has been run on the turf since 1985, and the distance was also increased to its current trip in 1995. William Mott has been the dominant trainer in the Bewitch, landing six victories between 1984 and 2023. Three of his wins have come with War Like Goddess, who is already the most successful runner in the history of the race. The seven-year-old is chasing a fourth straight victory in the Bewitch on Friday.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-war-like-goddess">War Like Goddess</h3>



<p>It would be challenging to start anywhere else when considering the leading contenders this weekend than the three-time defending champion in the Bewitch. War Like Goddess has been an excellent runner for connections throughout her career, scoring victories in eleven of her 18 career starts.</p>



<p>In fact, she has only finished outside of the top three on just three appearances. The seven-year-old will be making her seasonal reappearance once again in the Bewitch this weekend after finishing seventh in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf last year. But, her form in the book remains high quality after scoring in the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic last season.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-vergara">Vergara</h3>



<p>Vergara will represent the Graham Motion yard in the Bewitch this weekend. The five-year-old has won four from her 15 career starts, but she looked largely progressive throughout last year. But, she is yet to make her presence felt in graded company.</p>



<p>She was only third in the G3 Long Island Stakes on her final start last season, while she was also well back in the field in both the G3 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes and G2 Glens Falls Stakes. Her only success last season was scored in the G3 Ladies Marathon Stakes, and a massive improvement on that form is required to challenge War Like Goddess on Friday.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-lovely-princess">Lovely Princess</h3>



<p>Lovely Princess could be one of the most interesting contenders in the field this weekend for trainer Kenneth McPeek. The five-year-old has won four from 15 career starts to date, but she comes into this weekend with a run under her belt this season after finishing third in the Marie G. Krantz Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds.</p>



<p>She will need to come on plenty from that run to feature in this race on Friday, but she does have bits of Keeneland form that make her appealing. That includes a success in an allowance race last April, but she was firmly put in her place when only fourth in the G3 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes in October.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-bewitch-stakes-prediction">Bewitch Stakes Prediction</h2>



<p>War Like Goddess is clearly the classiest runner in this field, and she will be incredibly hard to beat based on her high-quality form. Chop Chop could be an interesting selection in Exactas, having won once from three already this season, which includes a very eye-catching speed figure when scoring in the Wintergreen Stakes at Turfway Park.</p>

As the Atlanta Falcons continue along with this comic, tragic season of theirs, one can't help but take note of a few things.

One of them, it seems obvious by now, is that since-fired coach Dan Quinn was not necessarily the source for the stumbling and fumbling that has led to a 1-6 record. Last week they demonstrated that they not only can't win for losing, they can't win for winning either.

Todd Gurley scored a touchdown that was, as it turns out, an accident, because he left too much time on the clock for Matthew Stafford and the Lions to come back.

Of course, Stafford put together a drive without any timeouts and took it all the way down the field. The Falcons, we suppose, were disheartened by Gurley's gaffe, which was kind of dubious and self-defeating.

In the press conference after the game, Morris, who was the defensive coordinator before taking the interim job, made sure to mention that players were asked not to go into the end zone. Naturally, all of this assumes Atlanta would be able to kick a field goal at the end, and perhaps, considering the circumstances, such an assumption had no business being made.

But I'm frankly a little stunned that Morris, who has indicated that he is, in effect, more or less in an extended interview for the "permanent" job, wouldn't have said something like "We're going to score when we have the opportunity, and I'm going to have confidence in this defensive unit that I have built to stop a team on the final drive."

THAT may have scored some points with owner Arthur Blank. But instead, Morris went scoreless there.

Oh, he DID say that he wanted his team to impose its will on opponents, which is kind of ironic since it appears that the will of fate has so cruelly worked so assiduously against them. And now there are rumors flying around that various Falcon players might be available via trade, including Matt Ryan and Julio Jones.

When he was asked whether Morris is a serious candidate to retain the coaching position beyond this season, Blank said yes, if he went 11-0. I thought that to be a little bizarre, but there is something about the tone of that statement - that he would be looking to affect a big splash when he makes his ultimate coaching hire.

So it is not surprising, as we approach Thursday night's game, that it has been suggested that when the Falcons take the field, they may be doing so against their eventual head coach.

Hiring Joe Brady would constitute a "big splash." He is 31 years old and has risen up the coaching ladder very quickly; so quickly, in fact, that he is an offensive coordinator in the NFL without ever officially having a position like that even in the college ranks. But of course, we know that he was the driving force behind LSU winning a national title and Joe Burrow winning a Heisman Trophy.

As he is now running the Carolina Panthers offense, he has helped this team become much more competitive than anybody wanted to give them credit for. Teddy Bridgewater, who worked with Brady in New Orleans, is currently fifth in the NFL in passing yards and has registered 72% completions.

As we were writing this, there was the possibility that Christian McCaffrey might play. He is off injured reserve after sitting with a high ankle sprain. We're not sure his presence in the lineup right now wouldn't upset what Brady has established, at least right away.

If you put these defenses together, they are yielding over 70% completions. There are capable running backs who complement the passing game, which takes up around 60% of the plays. And with capable offensive coordinators, those passing games work (example - Matt Ryan leads the NFL in passing yardage). And as you've read, Morris doesn't have any real faith in his stop unit.

Yes, either side could win. But we feel safest going <strong>OVER the total of 51 points</strong>.
