It’s been a good week here at BangTheBook on the spotlight college basketball games. It’s not a high-volume situation, but we’ve gotten five winners in six picks and hopefully can end on a high note for the week with this Sunday Funday selection.

Purdue looked dicey at halftime yesterday, but a huge final 20 saw the Boilermakers outscore Minnesota 51-27 to secure the bag and get a dub. Choices are a little limited today, as I always try to pick a late game with some lead time so that the preview can get as many eyes as possible.

That leaves us basically with Rutgers at Northwestern, Washington State at Washington, or UNLV at Nevada. With two interesting rivalry games on the docket, how about we go with the late one and the FS1 broadcast in Reno. Our friends at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bookmaker"><strong>Bookmaker Sportsbook</strong></a> have Nevada -2 with a total on the game of 142.

These rivals will play again on Tuesday, so let’s see how the tone-setting game goes.
<h3><strong><u>UNLV Rebels</u></strong></h3>
We talk all the time about using the box score from the first game to play something in the second game. That was the case for Utah State against UNLV last time out. The Runnin’ Rebels were 7-of-31 on two-point shots and 13-of-30 from three in the 59-56 win. It was an odd game to say the least. Well, Utah State won and covered the second game.

There aren’t a lot of standout performances for UNLV thus far. They had a month-long COVID pause that began in December and leaked over into January. In eight January games, the Rebels are 5-3, but two of the wins came against lower-division competition. They swept two from a very poor New Mexico team and had that aforementioned split with Utah State. A run of strong defensive performances came to an end with 1.18 points per possession allowed in the second Utah State game.

We’ll see if they can bounce back on that end of the floor here. This is a UNLV team that has been average across the board in a lot of ways. They take a ton of threes, firing away from deep 47.1% of the time. That is the 16th-highest rate in the nation. They’ve shot well on those, too, canning 35% of their triple tries. It’s been needed because UNLV gets to the line very little and doesn’t do much on the offensive glass.

In other words, there are a lot of empty trips when three-pointers aren’t falling. Fortunately for them, a lot have fallen, as they made 23-of-58 against Utah State and have made at least 10 treys in eight of 13 games. This is a small team from a height standpoint, so it makes sense that they would take a lot of threes. Cheikh Mbacke Diong is the only true big and the only guy that consistently finishes at the rim.

<h3><strong><u>Nevada</u></strong><strong><u> Wolf Pack</u></strong></h3>
We preyed on Minnesota’s home/road dichotomy on Saturday night. Nevada seems to have an emerging one as well. Back-to-back losses in Laramie against the Wyoming Cowboys and a sweep at the hands of the San Diego State Aztecs have Nevada reeling away from Reno. The Wolf Pack are back at home now for four straight games, so they’ll have to figure some things out and get back in the win column.

This will only be the seventh game in Reno for Nevada, where they are off to a 4-2 start. The Wolf Pack are shooting 53.9% on two-point attempts at home, but have shot better from deep on the road. Small sample sizes are playing some tricks on us there, but it simply speaks to how inconsistent Steve Alford’s team has been this season.

To be fair, Nevada has a lot of new faces and young guys shouldering a big load. This is a transitional year for Alford’s team in his second season. The team’s top shot-takers are all transfers. There is Grant Sherfield from Wichita State, Desmond Cambridge Jr. from Brown, Warren Washington from Oregon State, and then a smattering of sophomores that played sporadically as freshmen with a much more experienced team last year.

This is one of the youngest teams in college basketball and it has shown with the inconsistent results and performances. Alford recruited very well at UCLA and New Mexico, but hasn’t really brought incoming freshmen to Reno in the first two years, so he had to go the transfer route. This is a team that gets fouled a lot and shoots free throws very well, but also commits a lot of fouls and has benefited from the opposition’s misfires at the stripe. It is a much taller team than UNLV, but a team still trying to find its way.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
UNLV doesn’t get to the line a lot with a lot of jump shots from beyond the arc, so maybe that won’t impact Nevada as much as it has in past games. Nevada is concerning offensively because they rely too much on making mid-range jumpers. It’s not that they shoot a ton of them, it’s that their success rate on those shots is likely to regress a bit, as those just aren’t high-percentage opportunities.

Picking a side is tough here. UNLV only has three wins against D-I opponents and two were against a pathetic New Mexico team. Nevada has shown more of an ability to win over D-I competition, but I don’t like the profile for this team. I do like their height advantage a bit.

With no concrete play on the side, that brings us to the total. Nevada seems to be playing a bit quicker here of late. UNLV takes a ton of threes. Both teams foul quite a bit and I would expect UNLV to have trouble defending the interior with the size disadvantage, which often leads to whistles. UNLV will pretty much play at whatever tempo they are told to play at, so I think this one has a good shot at going over 142 with some fouling in play at the end of a close game and a heated rivalry.

<p>Vermont’s season got off to a rocky start with a 65-51 loss to Merrimack on Saturday. The Catamounts, who were -7.5 favorites, not only lost but also failed to cover the spread.</p> 

<p>After trailing 28-22 at halftime, Vermont allowed 37 points in the 2nd half while scoring 29. The game’s total points of 116 fell short of the O/U line of 126.</p><p>Vermont struggled offensively in their last game, shooting just 33.3% from the field and 29.6% from beyond the arc. Their effective field goal percentage was 40.4%, and they managed only 51 points, with 9 assists as a team.</p> <p>TJ Long led the Catamounts with 22 points, hitting 6 of 15 from three-point range. Adam Clark added 19 points and 6 assists, despite shooting 29.2% overall.</p><p>Vermont's defense held their opponent to 65 points on 39% shooting from the field. They limited two-point attempts effectively, with the opposition hitting just 37% of their shots inside the arc.</p> <p>From three-point range, Vermont's opponent shot 44%, making 8 of 18 attempts. They also went 9/10 from the free-throw line. Their effective field goal percentage was 32.9%, and they hit only 18.2% of their threes, going 4-for-22 from beyond the arc. Free-throw shooting was also an issue, as they connected on just 45.5% of their attempts.</p> <p>Yaphet Moundi was a bright spot, shooting 75% from the field and grabbing 18 rebounds. Dejour Reaves and Moundi each scored 16 points, while Niels Lane and Tahron Allen added 14 points apiece, with Allen hitting both of his three-point attempts.</p><p>Despite giving up 25 offensive rebounds, Iona's defense held strong, allowing just 64 points. The Gaels limited their opponent to 30% shooting from the field, with a 35% mark on two-point attempts.</p> <p>Iona's perimeter defense was particularly effective, as they held the opposition to 18% shooting from beyond the arc, with just 4 made threes. The Gaels also benefited from poor free-throw shooting, with their opponent hitting only 10 of 22 attempts, or 45%.</p>

<p>During that 13-game stretch, the White Sox have registered the 10<sup>th</sup>-highest ERA in the majors (4.38). Lucas Giolito will take the mound Wednesday, and the 27-year-old righty is 1-3 over his previous six starts, sporting a 3.34 ERA and a .228 batting average against.</p>



<p>Giolito is 9-9 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 25 starts this season, as he’s had a lot of ups and downs. Lucas has emerged victorious in two of his three career starts against Toronto, posting a 3.86 ERA across 16.1 innings of work, while the current ChiSox have a .330/.347/.387 batting line against him.</p>



<h2><strong>The Jays desperately need wins in sequences&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The Toronto Blue Jays improved to 65-58 on the season following a 2-1 win to the White Sox this past Monday. It was their third win in the previous ten games overall, as the Blue Jays are slowly losing the pace in the playoff race. They were four and a half games behind the bottom wild card on Tuesday, while the AL East title seems elusive.</p>

<p>Robbie Ray will take the hill Wednesday against the White Sox, and the 29-year-old southpaw is 9-5 with a sharp 2.79 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 24 starts this season. Ray has been outstanding over his previous five outings, tallying a 1.64 ERA through 33 innings of work while allowing a .510 OPS to his opponents.</p>



<p>The current White Sox are slashing .252/.262/.537 against Ray, who started in a 6-1 defeat at Chicago back in June. The lefty took a no-decision after tossing 6.1 frames of a one-run ball. He fanned 13 and surrendered just five hits to the ChiSox.</p>

<p>Frankly, this game could easily go either way, especially with both teams playing in poor form. The Blue Jays certainly need a win more than their rivals, and I’m expecting them to thrive under pressure in front of the home fans.</p>



<p>The White Sox are very dangerous when batting against the lefties, but they struggled mightily against Robbie Ray in June. Ray is enjoying a great season and should be ready for another tough challenge, while Lucas Giolito will have a tall task to slow down the Jays’ offense. Toronto is slashing just .244/.316/.418 over the last two weeks, but the Jays have plenty of dangerous weapons on their lineup that might explode any moment.</p>

<h2><strong>Chicago White Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays Total</strong></h2>



<p>Both Chicago and Toronto are underperforming at the plate, so backing the under on the totals looks like a fine wager. The Blue Jays have a 4.03 ERA in the last two weeks of action, but their bullpen has registered an awful 6.91 ERA and 5.66 FIP in the previous ten days.</p>



<p>On the other side, the White Sox bullpen carries a 4.74 ERA and 4.09 FIP in the past ten days, so totals seem like a really tricky bet. The starting pitchers will be a key factor, and both Giolito and Ray should do a solid job. The under is 7-1-1 in the last nine encounters between the White Sox and Blue Jays.</p>

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>TOURNAMENT PREVIEW – WGC MEXICO</strong></span>

This week the world's best players head down to Mexico City to compete in the World Golf Classic – Mexico. World Golf Classic events are unique in that the field is based upon the Official World Golf Rankings which rewards points for performance on all tours, weighted according to field strength. This means that, similar to Majors, the field is made up of players from the USA, Europe, Asia and beyond. The top 50 in the OWGR gain automatic entry and the field is completed by adding the highest ranked players from a two-year span on the Euro and PGA tour, the top 2 on the Japan, Australasian, Sunshine and Asian Tour Order of Merits in 2018 and is finished off by adding the top ranked Mexican player in the OWGR. This leaves us with an elite field of 70 and a no cut event giving each player 4 rounds to compete. Before breaking down the course, let's quickly recap last week.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>GENESIS OPEN RECAP</strong></span>

Adam Scott held on down the stretch to secure an outright victory for readers, the first of 2020. Riviera proved to be one of the best tests in golf and the tournament as a whole was outstanding from start to finish. The cream really rose to the top in the first edition of the Genesis with invitational status with guys like Rory, Kuchar, DJ and Matsuyama all making a run and falling short. The fast and firm conditions made Sunday some of the most compelling golf we will see all year and it really provides a blueprint for courses that are looking to challenge golfers with obstacles other than length. Full tournament head to heads featured here went 2-1 and 4-2 overall capping off an extremely profitable week. Onto Mexico!

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>COURSE PREVIEW</strong></span>

The WGC – Mexico is played at Club Du Golf Chapultepec in the heart of Mexico City. Players will not only have to deal with Montezuma’s Revenge but also by far the highest altitude of any course these guys will play all season. The course is a par 71 that plays at over 7300 yards but with the course sitting at 7500 feet above sea level the players have said it actually plays closer to 6600 yards with players seeing 10-20% more distance on shots depending on which club is used.

Off the tee players are faced with a tight, tree lined fairways. Many European players have commented that the course feels like a Spanish or Italian style track which could account for the fact that Euros have seen a good amount of success here in years past. The course plays relatively straight forward, without many doglegs and due to the altitude players will be taking less than driver off the tee and finding fairways is a premium due to the dense tree lines that will block any wayward tee shots. We are back with the rather rare Kikuya fairways and rough, although players should be used to it by now playing it 3 of the last 5 weeks. Remember, around the greens it can be nasty.

Speaking of the greens, Chapultepec features Poa, the last time we will see the devilish surface for quite some time. That means more variance with the shorter putts due to the natural bumpiness of the greens, but I will say it is not as drastic as what is found with the West Coast Poa. This will also be the case when we head to the Northeast and encounter Poa again later in the season. The greens are rather small by Tour standards and players have commented that the slight undulations can be difficult to read. While I don’t expect to see the putting difficulty we did last week at Riv, players will need to be solid from 5 feet and in to have a chance in Mexico.

The Par 5s here are very scoreable, which gives bombers a slight advantage as they will have even less into these important holes. With conditions looking the same as the last two years in Mexico, it is fair to expect the same favorable scoring positions with the winner coming in anywhere from 16 to 20 under. This means we will need to look for guys who put themselves in position to make a lot of birdies. It is worth noting that 13 of the last 16 WGC winners worldwide have come in at 25-1 or less and considering the hefty purse that comes with winning a WGC, that makes sense. With that said, let's get to The Plays!

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>THE PLAYS</strong></span>

<strong>Xander Schauffele +2200 –</strong> With 13 of 15 WGC winners coming from 25-1 or less, it would be hard to leave the no cut event king off the card. If you look past his yearly missed cut at Torrey (hometown, distractions, who knows but he has sucked there) it is hard to find someone more due that Xander to notch his 5th win on Tour. A 2nd place finish at the Tour Championship to end last year was followed by a playoff loss to Rory at the WGC – HSBC in China and another playoff loss at the Tournament of Champions to Thomas. There is likely nothing here but that is 2 more close calls at no cut events to go along with his 3 no cut event wins. Interesting! His form is solid, gaining 5.6 strokes ball striking last week at the Genesis including a 2 under 69 when the course played its most difficult on Sunday. He struck it well enough to be right there last week, he just couldn’t get any putts to fall, losing over a stroke on the greens over the 4 days. He gained 10 strokes ball striking here last year, suggesting altitude will be no issue. Most readers know that I am a sucker for a ball striking machine that just needs a few putts to fall to content and Xander absolutely fits that bill this week and comes in as my favorite under 25-1 play.

<strong>Bryson DeChambeau +3000 –</strong> A 5th last week at the Genesis was all I needed to see to secure Masters ticket at 45-1 and I will gladly back him here at slightly lower odds in a far inferior field. I love hearing stories of guys dedicating themselves to changes in their game during the off season, while I’m sure many do, few talk about it. Bryson was open about his desire to gain more distance off the tee and devoted himself to getting stronger to achieve that goal. The results are there as he was first in SG:OTT at WMPO and 3rd at Riv. My issue came from the fact he lost almost 5 Strokes on Approach at the relatively easy WMPO, but his striking performance at the Genesis suggests that is fixed as he returned to his old superb approach form, gaining 3.5 strokes in the category last week. While last year was undoubtedly disappointing, a 2nd at the weak fielded 3M being his best finish, he is less than 2 years removed from wins at Jack’s Tournament and the first and second legs of the 2018 FedEx Cup. A return to that form seems imminent and I will always error on the side of pedigree (he also has US Amateur and NCAA Individual titles) when attempting to determine if a player will bounce back to past form. In a tournament where his new found distance could separate him from the field, I look for DeChambeau to be in the hunt come Sunday.

<strong>Carlos Ortiz Top 20 +285 –</strong> The University of Texas product will undoubtedly be a fan favorite in his home country of Mexico and he is coming into his first ever WGC event playing some incredible golf. In the field being the highest ranked Mexican player without an automatic invite (he should be thanking Ancer for being so good), Ortiz has jumped between the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour since he turned pro in 2013 but is now in his second full season playing with the big boys and has put together some impressive performances early on. He has made 10 of his last 11 cuts including back to back top 5 performances to close out 2019. What I like about Ortiz is that his game is solid all around. He has averaged positive strokes gained in each of the big 4 categories over his last 5, 10 and 20 tournaments. It is rare you see that kind of consistency with anyone outside of the elite players. Although he is not from Mexico City, my guess is he has plenty of familiarity with the course and the altitude adjustment should be a piece of cake for the Mexican National. Remember, the field is small this week and where you usually have to best 140+ guys to reach the top 20, this week that number is cut in half. At almost 3/1 I will gladly back a player with his form and familiarity.

<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>THE MATCHUP</strong></span>

<strong>2u Kurt Kitayama -1.5 (+120) o Chez Reavie –</strong> Reavie is in the midst of one of the worst ball striking stretches of his entire career. Do not be fooled by his 10th last week at the Genesis, he did so behind an unsustainable 6 strokes gained around the greens (meaning he must have chipped in a few times) and 3 strokes gained putting. Striking wise he lost over a stroke ball striking, something he has done 3 out of 5 events in 2020, missing the cut in all 3. Kitayama is little known to regular PGA Tour followers, but Euro enthusiasts are well aware of Kurt’s game. The UNLV product qualified for the 2019 Euro Tour and became the fastest player in history to record two Euro Tour wins, collecting his 2nd in just his 11th start. A T6 late last month in Dubai shows he has picked up right where he left off in 2019 where he fell just shy of winning Euro Tour Rookie of the Year. Kitayama can absolutely move it, ranking 6th in driving distance on on the Euro Tour last year and should benefit greatly from the high altitude. Kitayama is likely a name you should get accustomed to, as his goal is to play full time Stateside but for now we can get him at a discount vs an out of form Reavie.
