Kyle Busch’s name has appeared on the entry list for the My Bariatric Solutions 300 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday July 18. Is it even worth putting together a betting preview?

Well, there aren’t a lot of sports going on yet, so we might as well, but Busch is the -130 favorite at 5Dimes Sportsbook for what amounts to his fourth Xfinity Series start of the season. He has one win out of those.

It was quite a trip to Kentucky for Austin Cindric, who won both Kentucky races in his Team Penske Ford. Those were his first two wins of the season and now he sits just 14 points behind Noah Gragson for second place and 33 points behind Chase Briscoe for first as the drivers head to Texas, where everything is allegedly bigger.

It feels kind of mean to say this, but maybe Busch just wants to remember what it feels like to win a race. He’s 0-for in the Cup Series, so he might as well take his chances at the Xfinity Series level. He is a six-time winner of this race and the reigning champion.

What is nice about the odds is that Busch’s presence bumps Briscoe from +250 or +275 up to +550 simply by virtue of being there because Briscoe would have been the clear-cut favorite. Briscoe already has five wins this season, including two victories on 1.5-mile tracks.

<strong><u>Texas</u></strong><strong><u> Motor Speedway</u></strong>

Everything’s bigger in Texas except for this track. It is a pretty standard-issue 1.5-mile oval loop with four turns and an asphalt surface. The first two turns come in at 20 degrees and then the final two turns are 24 degrees. This is a twice-a-year stop for both the Cup Series and the Xfinity Series. The next stop will be during the playoffs.

This will be the first time for this race in the sweltering heat of the Texas summer. Last year’s race was March 30, the earliest running of the race since 2003. It typically falls in April based on the NASCAR calendar. It will be a July race on the scalding-hot track, so tire wear will be a big deal this year with a lot of burnt rubber on the track.

<strong><u>Beating Around the Busch</u></strong>

Kyle Busch has 21 races here at the Xfinity/Nationwide Series level. He’s led 1,686 of the 4,091 laps that he has been on the track for and has nine career wins. In those 21 races, he’s finished in the top five 16 times and has 17 top-10 finishes. His average finish is 6.8 in those 21 races, so to call him a deserving favorite at -130 is a major understatement.

He’s yet to win a Cup Series race, but he’s been third, second, and first in his three Xfinity Series starts. He led the most laps in two of those races and won Stage 2 in the other one. This is his race to lose. He could very well lose it, but this is his race to lose.

<strong><u>The Rest</u></strong>

Checking in on the rest of the field, there are a lot of drivers with limited results in Texas. Justin Allgaier has raced on this track 19 times at this level and only has one top-five finish. He’s only led 37 laps out of 3,615. He’s got nine top-10 finishes, but has not found the winner’s circle.

Ross Chastain has 10 starts here with one top-five finish and just 31 laps led. Other guys that won’t be a factor, like Michael Annett and Ryan Sieg, have 15 races apiece here with nothing of note. Combined, they have five top-10 finishes.

Chase Briscoe has three starts on this track and one top-five finish. Briscoe has been the best and most consistent of the points drivers this season with those five wins. He’s had a couple of throwaway performances, with a 19th at Auto Club and a 20th at Charlotte. He was 18th at Talladega, but won the second stage before Talladega happened.

Austin Cindric’s back-to-back wins at Kentucky were long overdue. He had seven previous top-five finishes and four stage wins. He should have won at Atlanta and was second at Las Vegas and in the first Homestead race. It was only a matter of time on a 1.5-mile track or otherwise. It just so happened to come on back-to-back days.  He’s +650 this week to make it three in a row.

The guy I have my eye on is Noah Gragson. Frustrations boiled over between Gragson and Harrison Burton with a donnybrook at Kentucky Speedway. Gragson won three stages over those two races and led the most laps on Thursday night, but couldn’t get the win. On Friday, he won with a second-round KO of Burton in the pit area.

Gragson has a really nice price at +1320 here because he’s fallen behind Briscoe and Cindric and Busch is in the race. Gragson led the most laps and won Stage 2 in both Homestead-Miami races on the 1.5-mile track. He’s my favorite pick for the race.

His combat partner, Harrison Burton, is +1540 and an interesting consideration. He has not run well at all the last five weeks, but he won at Homestead and Auto Club and was fifth at Las Vegas and Atlanta. If he can put it all together, this is a good price, but the last five weeks don’t inspire much confidence.

<strong><u>Picks</u></strong>

I can’t let Chase Briscoe pass at +550 just because Kyle Busch is in the race. Noah Gragson is the other pick at +1320. Busch probably wins, but those are two good prices on guys having really good years with excellent speed in every race.

<p>Vancouver and St. Louis continue their three-game regular-season set. Back in January, the Blues outlasted the Canucks 3-1 as -175 road favorites. <h2>The Canucks won two of their last three games              </h2>

<h2>The Blues hope to break out of their slump           </h2>



<p>The St. Louis Blues (35-20-9) have struggled mightily over the last few weeks. They’ve won only one of their last six games overall and three of their previous 12 outings at any location. The Blues are now sitting at the fifth spot of the Western Conference standings, only four points ahead of the ninth-seeded Dallas Stars.</p>



<p>St. Louis is coming off an embarrassing 7-2 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes this past Saturday. It was their fourth consecutive loss on the home ice, while Ville Husso recorded his third defeat in his last four starts. Husso is now 16-6-4 with a 2.43 GAA and .922 save percentage in 2021-22, while Jordan Binnington is 13-13-4 with a 3.14 GAA and .901 save percentage.</p>



<p>It’s unknown who’ll guard the cage Monday against the Canucks, though we anticipate Husso, who’s been the Blues’ first option in the second half of the season. St. Louis surrenders 2.88 goals per game (13<sup>th</sup> in the NHL) while tallying 3.50 in a return (6<sup>th</sup>) on an 11.4 shooting percentage (1<sup>st</sup>).</p>

<p>The Canucks trail the No. 8 seed by three points. On the other side, the Blues desperately need a win to retain the No. 5 seed. I lean St. Louis because of its offense. The Blues own the fourth-best power-play percentage in the league (26.2%), while the Canucks have allowed the second-most power-play opportunities so far this season (206).</p>

It was a very impressive performance for the favorite and also for the place finisher, Excession, who started slow at the back of the back, made a huge push up the rail, and nearly had enough to take down the favorite in the muck and mud.

This week, we’ll take a look at two big races coming up down at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The first is the Fair Grounds Oaks. This is part of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks, which is a series of filly races that generally precedes the first Friday in May. Unfortunately, with the Kentucky Derby pushed back to September, the Kentucky Oaks is now the first Friday in September.

Nevertheless, we’ve got the Grade 2 TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks this week, which is a 1 1/16 mile race. Serengeti Empress, the winner of last year’s Kentucky Oaks, was the seventh filly since 2000 to win the Fair Grounds Oaks and then the Kentucky Oaks, so this one could be predictive for when we get to Churchill Downs.

This is the first race in the second leg of the Road to the Kentucky Oaks series and it looks to be a race for second place. The favorite, <strong>Finite</strong>, was listed as the 3/5 morning line favorite. Finite also drew the outermost post position, so the race to the front should be unabated.

Let’s look at the six horses in the field and put together a profile:

<strong>Antoinette – </strong>Antoinette comes in off of her first win, which came in the Tepin Stakes at Aqueduct. The daughter of Hard Spun went 1 1/16 miles in 1:38:87 for a strong time to hold off I Dare U and Quality Heat. I Dare U was actually the even money favorite in that two-year-old filly race. Antoinette stalked the pace for most of the race before sliding down at the rail to beat I Dare U over the final furlong and a half. And she just scampered to the victory in her dirt debut.

This will be her first race since then for legendary trainer Bill Mott. Interestingly, Alvarado was in the irons on Stretchthestory, who went off at 23/1 in that race. It was a patient and calculated ride from Joe Bravo. Will Alvarado take the same tact? If so, will Antoinette have the speed in a stronger race, particularly to chase down Finite?

<strong>French Rose – </strong>French Rose comes off the shelf for the first race in nine months after a couple of maiden special weight (MSW) races at Santa Anita. This seems like an odd choice for J. Keith Desormeaux to bring this filly all the way from California to run in a race where she seems to have no chance. There must be a method to the madness.

Local rider Mitch Murrill will also be the one trying to get French Rose to the board. Murrill will also ride Sonneteer for Desormeaux in the New Orleans Classic, a 4+ race that precedes the Louisiana Derby. Sonneteer would seem to have a better chance in that race than French Rose has here.

<strong>Tempers Rising – </strong>The third favorite on the board comes from the camp of Dallas Stewart. Julian Leparoux will be in the irons for this powerhouse team that has had a couple of underwhelming finishes at Fair Grounds to this point. Tempers Rising finished fourth in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes back in February and third in the Silverbulletday Stakes in January. In fact, Tempers Rising has yet to win a race.

The daughter of Bayern, who won the Breeders’ Cup Classic back in 2014, has run at 1 1/16 miles twice in her career. The distance shouldn’t be a factor for her, but she has been bested by Finite twice already, so making the board is a possibility, but winning the race does not seem to be. Her familiarity with Fair Grounds and the cohesiveness of Stewart and Leparoux could really help in the quest for second.

<strong>Bonny South – </strong>Another excellent team here as Brad Cox and Florent Geroux team up once again with Bonny South. We don’t have a whole lot of data points for Bonny South, but we have one and it was impressive. In her allowance race at Oaklawn last month, she beat Shedaresthedevil in a sprint to the finish. Shedaresthedevil just won the Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn back on March 7.

There are some additional layers to Bonny South being in this race. We could have seen Taraz in the Fair Grounds Oaks. She won the Martha Washington Stakes at Churchill Downs and the Letellier Memorial at Fair Grounds, but suffered a catastrophic injury during a workout last month and had to be euthanized. It was reported that Taraz was going to run the Honeybee Stakes and not this race, so perhaps Bonny South was built better for the distance all along.

Cox is having some tough luck of late. An injury to Mr. Monomoy, thought to be a solid Derby contender, has put him on the shelf. One other note here is that Cox is also the trainer for British Idiom, who finished second to Finite in the Rachel Alexandra. It is a different ownership group, but Cox very much knows what he is up against.

<strong>Stop Shoppin Tammy – </strong>We don’t know much about Stop Shoppin Tammy except that she is the daughter of Tapit and that she is good enough for Corey Lanerie to assume the mount. Lanerie has a full dance card on Saturday with a full day of racing, but it is rare for Lanerie to pair up with Philip Bauer.

Stop Shoppin Tammy finished fourth in her maiden at Saratoga last year before coming to Fair Grounds for a win in her maiden there in mid-February. She went gate-to-wire in that one and comes in with a little momentum here off of a terrific workout time. She is also on Lasix for the first time, so we’ll see how that goes for her.

<strong>Finite – </strong>Finite isn’t just the likely winner of this race, but she could very well win a race or two in the Grade 1s, whenever that may be. The Kentucky Oaks won’t be until September. We’ll see when the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes that precedes the Preakness and the Acorn Stakes that precedes the Belmont will be run, but Finite should be ready.

Finite won the Rachel Alexandra on this very track by nearly five lengths last month. She beat Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner British Idiom in that race and has won five straight races overall. She’s won the Golden Rod Stakes and the Rachel Alexandra at this distance, so she won’t be bothered by that. This will also be her third race at Fair Grounds along with the Silverbulletday, which she also won.

<strong>Picks</strong>

So, who do we take alongside Finite? There are only six fillies in the race, so we want to be somewhat selective after Finite in an exacta or a trifecta. The horse that I prefer for second is Bonny South. Brad Cox knows fillies. Even with Taraz, prior to her tragic passing, and British Idiom in his group, Cox pointed Bonny South to this race. Munnings is the sire of both Finite and Bonny South and it should be a Munnings 1-2 finish.

Antoinette and Tempers Rising are both of interest in exotics. Antoinette’s excellent time in the Tepin Stakes came with a really strong close. Tempers Rising is a Dallas Stewart filly and even though she hasn’t had the results, we know he’s solid with the girls. I’m still finalizing my card with regards to the exotics, but will play Finite and Bonny South together and separately.

<p>The Philadelphia 76ers wrapped up their four-game road trip on Wednesday night with a back-to-back clash against Charlotte. They were looking for the third straight victory after beating the Hornets 127-124 in overtime this past Monday.</p>



<p>Back on Friday, the Sixers outlasted the Atlanta Hawks 98-96 as 2.5-point road dogs. They overcame a ten-point fourth-quarter deficit, allowing a paltry nine points in the final 12 minutes. Joel Embiid led the charge with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while Seth Curry added 18 points and five assists.</p>



<p>Embiid dominated the Hornets in that narrow overtime victory, as Phila failed to cover a 7.5-point spread. He had 43 points on 15-for-20 shooting from the field along with 15 rebounds and seven assists. The 76ers score 110.6 points per 100 possessions (tied-10<sup>th</sup> in the NBA) but surrender 109.4 in a return (17<sup>th</sup>).</p>

The end of the regular season is about two months away in the NHL. At that point, 16 teams will try their best to get their names etched on Lord Stanley’s Cup. About two months after that, a champion will be crowned. With the NHL Trade Deadline on the horizon and the All-Star Break in the rearview mirror, our good friend Brian Blessing thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the current NHL futures betting odds to win it all.

Many of the short prices in the NHL come from the Eastern Conference, where the Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, and Pittsburgh Penguins reside. Right now, the East looks stronger than the Western Conference, but keep in mind that last season’s Stanley Cup champion was a last-place team in early January.

That team was the St. Louis Blues, who are anything but a last-place team this season and are actually the leaders in the Western Conference. After the Blues, there does seem to be a pretty decent drop-off to the rest of the conference, but sentiments like that tend to create a lot of betting value in futures markets.

One such team was featured prominently in Brian Blessing’s video thoughts about the current odds and where some of the best values are between the two conferences. At this point in time, there isn’t a lot of value on the good teams and you can probably get similar prices as the playoffs get closer.
