<p>The Yanks are still five games behind the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays, but they are tied with the Red Sox and Oakland Athletics for the wild-card spot. New York has won 13 of its first 17 contests in August, scoring 86 runs on a .255/.343/.418 batting line and posting a nice 2.89 ERA in the process.</p>

<p>The Twins have improved on the mound in the last few weeks, but their offense hasn’t impressed, and Minnesota will have a tall task against the Yanks’ in-form pitching staff.</p>



<p>The Yankees have done a solid job at the plate so far this month, while their pitching has been remarkable lately. New York’s relievers boast the lowest ERA in the majors in August (1.91), so I’m backing the Yanks to extend their good run of form.</p>

<p>I’ve mentioned how good the Twins bullpen is at the moment, but Minnesota could easily struggle with depth. The Twins will have to start regressing at some point, though the Yankees’ offense doesn’t look like a massive challenge.</p>



<p>Betting on the hosts seems like a slam dunk, while the totals are a tricky wager. The Yankees are killing it on the mound, so the under should be the right move, but I don’t trust the Twins ‘pen despite its recent record.</p>

<p>New Orleans is hoping to avoid the fourth straight defeat when they host Orlando at Smoothie King Center. <p><strong>Pelicans are on a losing streak again</strong></p>



<p>The New Orleans Pelicans (30-31, 28-33-0 ATS) did bounce back from a ten-game losing skid with three consecutive wins but returned to losing ways and are now on a three-game losing run. The Pelicans returned home from a four-game road trip on which they suffered three defeats, including the latest one to the New York Knicks. New Orleans allowed even 73 points in the opening half at Madison Square Garden, and although they improved in the second half, it was far from enough to avoid a massive 128-106 loss. The Pels shot just 39.2% from the field and made only eight triples opposite the Knicks’ 19, while the hosts were also better in rebounds (54-39).</p>



<p>Brandon Ingram led the Pelicans with 19 points and four rebounds. Josh Richardson had 16 points, team-high four assists, and game-high four steals, C.J. McCollum scored 13 points with four dimes, while Jonas Valanciunas posted a double-double of 12 points and team-high ten boards.</p>



<p>PF Zion Williamson (hamstring) is out indefinitely, while PF Larry Nance Jr. (ankle) left the last game with an injury and is questionable to face the Magic on Monday.</p>

They are scoring 114.7 points per contest, which is an average offense in the NBA, but that cannot be said for the Magic, who average 110.8 ppg – the third weakest offense in the league. Although they are playing without injured Zion Williamson, the Pels are still alive in the playoff race and I am backing them to return to .500 with a win on Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p><strong>Pick:</strong> Take the Pelicans at -1.5 (-133)</p>



<p><strong>The Total</strong></p>



<p>The Pelicans failed to score more than 110 points in each of their previous five games, and even though Orlando has a relatively good defense, I expect the hosts to bounce back offensively in this one. New Orleans will likely have to score at least 115 in order to get a win, and I am backing them to do it. It’s going to be a tight encounter, so we could have an interesting finish and overtime is also a possibility. Over is 6-1 in the last seven H2H meetings; Over is 5-0 in the Pelicans’ previous five games after allowing more than 125 points in their last game, while Over is 6-1 in New Orleans’ last seven vs. a team with a losing straight-up record.</p>

<p>Last time out, Gausman took a loss in a 7-4 defeat to San Diego, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and a walk through five frames. He’s 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in four starts against the Padres in 2021 (24 innings pitched).</p>



<h2><strong>The Padres desperately need a win</strong></h2>



<p>The San Diego Padres lost at St. Louis 8-7 last Sunday and got swept by the Cardinals in a three-game series at Busch Stadium. It was their eighth defeat in the last ten games overall, so the 76-73 Padres trailed the bottom wild card in the National League by three and a half games.</p>



<p>San Diego has fallen apart on both sides of the ball lately. In the past two weeks, the Padres have recorded the third-highest ERA in the majors (6.03) to go with a 1.30 WHIP and a .245 batting average against. They’ve posted an underwhelming .231/.287/.326 batting line as well.</p>



<p>Joe Musgrove will take the hill Tuesday, and he’s 11-9 with a 2.99 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 28 starts and one relief appearance in 2021. The 28-year-old righty has registered a 4.15 ERA through his three starts in September, allowing a .871 OPS and .261 BABIP to his opponents.</p>



<p>Musgrove met the Padres last week and took a win in a 9-6 road victory, yielding three earned runs on five hits and three walks across six frames of work. He’s now 1-2 with a poor 6.75 ERA in three starts against San Diego in 2021.</p>

It was another tough loss for Bobby Hurley’s bunch when these two teams met in Tempe last Thursday. Arizona came away with an 82-80 victory to send the Sun Devils to their fifth straight loss. In that span, ASU has lost in overtime to UCLA, by one to Oregon State, and then by two to their in-state rivals.

It has been a struggle to close out games. Arizona State is something of a positive regression team. They are 10th nationally in TO% on offense and 44th nationally in TO% on defense, but they simply haven’t maximized those extra possessions enough. They aren’t a bad offense, per se, but an average one at best, coming in 164th in eFG% at 50.4%.

The Sun Devils don’t really stand out offensively in any way, aside from taking care of the basketball. They are one of the nation’s worst offensive rebounding teams, but that didn’t play a huge rule last game against the Wildcats, as both teams had nine ORebs.

The loss right at the buzzer was particularly devastating for Arizona State because it came on a putback at the rim from 6-foot-11 freshman Azuolas Tubelis. Amazingly, it was a missed three that led to the putback. Missed threes have not been the MO for the Arizona State defense, as opponents are shooting 36.3% on triple tries.

Bad rebounding teams will struggle and ASU fits the bill. We’ll see if Arizona does better in that department here.

<h3><strong><u>Arizona</u></strong><strong><u> Wildcats</u></strong></h3>
The Wildcats are one of the top rebounding teams in the nation, ranking in the top 15 in ORB% and top 40 in ORB% against. They’ve also shot 37.7% from the three-point line. In other words, everything that they do well is an area of weakness for Arizona State. However, the Wildcats only won by the game by two points. In order to cover this spread, they’ll have to win by at least six.

The line shot down from the +7 opener to +5.5. There really isn’t too much to the box score that would suggest such an adjustment from the last game. Arizona State had 12 more free throw attempts and six more points at the line, but still managed to lose. The Wildcats forced ASU into a 21.5% turnover percentage, the highest of the season for the team from Tempe.

Arizona is such a hard team to defend. A lot of teams around college basketball have one or two players that really stand out and shoulder the load. The Wildcats have several that grade above average offensively. It makes them a tough team to play against because a lot of different guys can hurt you in multiple ways. Arizona finishes well at the rim at 65% and could actually take more shots from there instead of settling for mid-range jumpers. If there is one big flaw for Sean Miller’s team, I would point to that.

Opponents have made 36.9% of their three-pointers in conference play against Arizona. It will be interesting to see if the ‘Cats can make an adjustment to that. For the season, they’ve done okay in that department, but also played a weak non-conference schedule. Perhaps that is why some people have hopped on the Arizona State side here with the early line movement.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
The first game was played to 74 possessions, which was a pretty quick pace for Arizona. Only one other regulation game in conference play has gone that quick and that was against USC. Two non-conference games against Grambling State and Eastern Washington to start the season played to 75 possessions.

That might be an adjustment for Arizona here. They’ll also have to do a better job defending the perimeter. Even going 11-for-21 last game, Arizona State is still only shooting 32.7% in conference play from three.

The opening move makes sense here, especially with how tightly contested the last game was, but I wouldn’t expect ASU to have a big free throw advantage here. In fact, I’d expect it the other way if Arizona can play from in front with a game lined in fouling range. I would also expect Arizona to slow it down and control the pace and tempo of the game a bit more.

I’ll go against the early line move here and look to lay Arizona -5.5.

Undoubtedly Florida has standout talent. And they played in a good league. But the SEC was in no way on the level of the Big Ten or Big 12.

Some folks are saying that the Big Ten is not what it was cracked up to be, judging from the losses by teams like Purdue and Ohio State. ORU took the measure of the Buckeyes on Friday, and they did so in a rather unorthodox manner.

We say that because the Golden Eagles got 59 of their 75 points from just two people. Kevin Obanor had 30 points, while Max Abmas added 29. When you got beyond those two, Oral Roberts got just six total field goals from the rest of the team. But the other guys obviously didn't crumble; they committed just six turnovers and also held Ohio State to just five out of 23 from beyond the three-point arc.

On the season, Abmas was the nation's leading scorer, averaging 24.2 points per game. Obanor came in with 18.2 ppg. These guys can really drain it from long range. Abmas was 43.5% accurate, while Obanor is 45.3% and Kareem Thompson shot 41.5%. And ORU isn't shy about shooting triples, as that constitutes 41% of their attempts. On top of that, the Golden Eagles don't turn the ball over very often (15th in offensive turnover percentage). And they are the best free throw shooting team in the country (82.4%), so they aren't going to leave many points on the table.

Yes, ORU was blown out by the likes of Missouri and Oklahoma. But they also hung pretty tight with Wichita State and Oklahoma State. They're not intimidated in the least.

In most categories, Florida is solid, although there isn't much special to be seen. Well, except that they are up near the top in terms of their ability to defend three-pointers (just 30.5%). This presents a problem for ORU. So does the presence of 6-11 center Colin Castleton, who had 19 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks against Virginia Tech in Friday's overtime win. You may see Florida's offense moving a little more inside.

We think that Oral Roberts has enough firepower to come in through the back door. But it wouldn't be surprising if Florida really made them work for those shots. Remember that the Gators were "under" the total going into overtime the other day, and that means they have played nine out of the last ten that way - in regulation time, that is. That may be the primary way we go here.
