Certainly when the time comes to choose seeds for the NCAA tournament, the Iowa Hawkeyes plan to be in contention for one of the top positions. You can say what you want about Maryland's most recent effort against Indiana, which resulted in a 63 - 55 defeat. But they are really going to have to turn in a sizzling defensive effort to keep themselves afloat against this Iowa squad, which has scored a victory over a Purdue team that has already beaten the Terrapins. This is a team that shoots with an impressive degree of accuracy on both the outside and the inside, and a lot of credit for that has to go to Garza, who is easily among the nation's top offensive players.

Garza has shot 62% from inside of the 3-point arc, and he is enough of a threat from the outside that he keeps defenders honest. Iowa may have been outclassed a little in that previous 99 - 88 loss to top-ranked Gonzaga, but Garza had 30 points and ten rebounds in that contest.

And Iowa isn't going to give Maryland anything cheap either - their turnover rate is just 13.3% of possessions, and that's the fifth-best figure in the country. Four of Maryland's five losses (with Purdue being the exception) have come by at least eight points. So we can lay the number here with a certain degree of confidence.

Start times are staggering throughout the day on the Memorial Day holiday for today’s baseball card. There are a few night games, though, including the matchup in Chavez Ravine, where the Los Angeles Dodgers host the St. Louis Cardinals. It is the best pitching matchup on the board with Jack Flaherty for the Redbirds and Trevor Bauer for the boys in blue and white.

Bauer and the Dodgers are a growing favorite up in the -180 range, as we continue to see money on the Dodgers and money come in against the Cardinals. <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bovada/">Bovada Sportsbook</a></strong> initially had a total of 6.5 on this game, but it has since moved up to 7 with some betting activity on the over.
<h2><strong><u>St. Louis Cardinals</u></strong></h2>
Bettors that had been fading the Cardinals and buying the Diamondbacks finally got one to come through on Sunday. St. Louis lost 9-2 to miss out on a four-game sweep at Chase Field. Monday’s opponent is quite a bit tougher.

Why are bettors so interested in fading the Cardinals? There seem to be a few different reasons. Looking at Pythagorean Win-Loss, St. Louis has overachieved by three wins per that standings metric, which is based on run differential. The Cardinals are 30-23 for the season, but only +5 in run differential. When looking at BaseRuns, the Cardinals look more like a 28-25 team, so they’ve played well, but not as well as their record would suggest.

Another area where bettors are expecting regression is in the HR/FB% department. Home runs are down this season as a result of the deadened baseball, but the Cardinals are not really allowing any this year. Their HR/FB% is 7.8%, easily the lowest in baseball. As a result, the Cardinals have a 3.91 ERA as a staff, but a 4.72 FIP in 465 innings across the 30 games this season. Bettors will look at their HR/FB% and say that it needs to regress, though they’ve gone all-in with trying to prevent homers.

Another element of the ongoing Cardinals fade is to go against St. Louis on the road. Busch Stadium suppresses power and offense. The Cardinals have a 4.09 ERA away from home, but much better numbers in the Arch City. As a result, bettors are trying to pick off spots to fade them away from home. St. Louis has one of the highest walk rates for the season, which you can get away with at Busch Stadium, but not as easily on the road. What’s most interesting is that the team’s HR/FB% against is actually lower on the road at 7.1%. The Marlins are the only other team in single digits in that department.

Jack Flaherty gets the call today with a 2.84 ERA, a 3.48 FIP, and a 4.02 xFIP. He’s worked 57 innings with over a strikeout per inning and solid peripherals across the board. His 69.5% LOB% is a little on the low side, yet he’s still running that sub-3.00 ERA, so bettors may be looking at that wondering what’s going on here.
<h2><strong><u>Los Angeles Dodgers</u></strong></h2>
The Dodgers dropped three of four at home to the San Francisco Giants just one week after completing a sweep at Oracle Park of one of their two rivals in the NL West. Prior to this current three-game losing streak, Los Angeles was 13-2 over the previous 15 games. A team this talented seems capable of simply flipping the switch whenever it’s required and that’s what the Dodgers did, at least for a while.

Their pitching failed them at home in that series, allowing 24 runs in the three losses. A loss today would tie the longest losing streak of the season for the Dodgers, which happened from May 4-7 with two walk-off losses to the Cubs in the middle. It is hard to have prolonged losing streaks with so many good starting pitchers and all of the offensive talent that the Dodgers have.

This is a team that ranks third in fWAR on the offensive and defensive sides per FanGraphs at 10.4. Only the White Sox and Astros are higher. The Dodgers haven’t hit for as much power as we would typically see, but they do have one of the league’s best walk rates, a key element to this handicap since Flaherty can sometimes get a little bit wild.

The Dodgers also have a good starter on the mound for stopping a losing streak in Trevor Bauer. Bauer has a 2.07 ERA with a 3.44 FIP in his 69.2 innings this season. Bauer has only worked 20 innings at home, but he’s also only allowed two earned runs in those 20 innings at home. He’s made most of his starts on the road and has pitched well overall, with some excellent peripherals. He does have a .176 BABIP and a 91.3% LOB%, so regression is likely to come, but not to the degree we’d see from most guys.
<h2><strong><u>Cardinals vs. Dodgers Free Pick</u></strong></h2>
The move on the over makes a lot of sense here up to 7. There are some signs with Bauer’s profile that do suggest regression. I’d also be surprised if this was a good matchup for Flaherty. He throws a lot of fastballs and can end up with a lot of deep counts. I’d expect some walks and some hard contact against him going out on the road against a good offense.

A lot of focus has been placed on the playoff teams at this point in the NBA season. Rightfully so, of course, but sometimes the best betting options on the card will come from the games that appear to mean absolutely nothing.

Take Sunday’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic for example. These two teams have been mathematically eliminated for weeks now, but are still playing out the string, as players try to pad their stats and get additional playing time or contracts for next season. Sometimes those are the best games to look at late in the year.

With that, we take a look at the Timberwolves, who have only been favored on the road two times this season, in a road favorite role of -7 against the Magic with a lofty total of 229 at <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline/">BetOnline Sportsbook</a></strong>. Orlando was favored on the road against the T-Wolves back on January and won by a point in a game that stayed way under the total of 218. My, how things have changed.
<h2><strong><u>Minnesota Timberwolves</u></strong></h2>
Do athletes really quit? Do they really tank? The Timberwolves are a respectable 4-3 in their last seven games, which accounts for a quarter of their wins this season. Minnesota is 20-47. The T-Wolves have not been in playoff contention at any point. Yet, they’re 6-5 over their last 11. They may have waved the white flag on the playoffs, but they haven’t given up.

They’ve even had some really close losses lately. They lost by three in a back-to-back at Sacramento on the 21st after winning the first game. They lost in overtime to the Pelicans on May 1. They lost by four to Memphis on May 5. They’ve been trying. Well, on one end of the floor anyway.

Minnesota has given up 140, 139, and 121 over the last three games. They allowed 114, 107, 104, and 96 during their four-game winning streak, which included a sweet of a home-and-home with Utah. It does seem like the defensive effort level has gone by the wayside for a lot of teams late in the regular season and Minnesota seems to be one of those teams.

They’ve scored at least 100 points in each of their last 12 games, so offense isn’t necessarily the problem. Anthony Edwards has gotten more playing time and more of a chance to shine of late and he’s run with the opportunity, including a career-high 42 against Memphis two games ago. Karl-Anthony Towns is still putting up double-doubles with regularity. This is a team trying to have fun to close out a challenging season and do so with offense.
<h2><strong><u>Orlando Magic</u></strong></h2>
Things went south for Orlando very early this season. After an 8-10 start, the Magic lost seven of the next eight to fall well off the playoff pace in the Eastern Conference. Eventually, they would fall all the way to the 21-46 record that they have now. They’ve lost 15 of their last 19, so they have not rebounded to play better the way that the Timberwolves have. A big reason why is because Orlando was a major seller at the Trade Deadline to acquire picks and futures and their day-to-day lineup is just not good at all.

Guys like Dwayne Bacon, Cole Anthony, and Moritz Wagner are getting lots of playing time. Bacon, in his fourth year in the league, is a bench player at best. He’s scoring points for the Magic simply because of the increased volume of minutes played. It could lead to more playing time down the line and possibly some more money, but this isn’t an upside play akin to the Timberwolves giving more PT to Edwards.

More playing time for Cole Anthony is a good thing, though, as the UNC product has scored over 15 points per game in his last 10. His inconsistency is still on display regularly, as he’s had a couple of 20-point games this month to also go along with games of four and eight points. The Magic are in a great position to let him learn on the fly. The same is true of Wagner and Ignas Brazdeikis, who is getting a few more looks right now.
<h2><strong><u>Timberwolves vs. Magic Free Pick</u></strong></h2>
Minnesota has a lot more upside than the Magic right now. If this was a standalone road game, I’m not sure I’d like the Timberwolves, but because it is a two-game road trip, they’ll at least be focused on winning one of them, I would think. If nothing else, Towns is trying to be a leader and Edwards is trying to make a name for himself. The Magic have guys with individual motivations for more playing time or free agent dollars, but they don’t have the same level of talent at present.
