Things keep getting more and more toxic around the New York Jets.

There's more than enough piling on, and some backstabbing to boot. And we're almost certain it's not over.

For those who are rooting for the team to clinch an opportunity to get the #1 pick in the draft, last Sunday's collapse against the Las Vegas Raiders was quite welcome, since the Jacksonville Jaguars, with a 1-11 record, are competing hard for the same prize.

But there was almost unanimous opinion about defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' play-calling gaffe as he called an all-out blitz, rushing eight people, and left an undrafted rookie cornerback named Lamar Jackson out on an island with a receiver (Henry Ruggs) who was almost surely going to beat him in a speed duel. The result was a touchdown pass by Derek Carr with seven seconds left and another sad loss for the worst franchise in the NFL.

Rex Ryan, doing his "analysis" for ESPN, said it was the worst call he'd ever seen in all of his time in football. Boomer Esiason, who co-hosts a show on WFAN in New York, where they say controversial things just for the sake of doing so, suggested that Williams was part of the "tanking" process, although that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since Williams wasn't likely to be around next season anyway to be part of a team with, say, Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. But it gives you an idea of just how apoplectic everybody was.

Adam Gase is a goner, too, but he is also a guy who has always looked for scapegoats. So he was all too willing to throw Williams under the bus, although he admitted that he should have called a time-out when he heard through his headset that there was a "Cover-Zero" defensive call on the play. Gase says he slept on his eventual decision, but then told ownership he was firing Williams, which is exactly what he did.

Williams now has a chance to become the defensive coordinator for TWO teams with 0-16 records (the Cleveland Browns of a few years ago being the other) and in that specific position, he has been a winner in nine of his last 52 games. So this could be the end of the road for him.

If you recall, Williams was the focus of the "Bountygate" scandal in New Orleans, where he was suspended from the league. One of the people who testified against him at the NFL hearing was Joe Vitt, who wound up with the Saints' interim coaching gig as a result.

Vitt is Adam Gase's father-in-law. And he was hired as the linebacker coach by Gase with the Jets.

Like I said, it's pretty toxic.

Since apparently Donald Trump has exhausted most of his avenues through which to get some "relief" about the election, we might expect that Woody Johnson may soon return from his role as Ambassador to Great Britain, and take over the Jets' ownership again, at which point we may see changes.

For now, with this game against the Seahawks, we will be reminded about one guy who got out while the getting was good - Jamal Adams, who the Jets say they don't miss. He was one of the unhappy campers in New York, so he was sent away, as was Le'Veon Bell. One guy who actually wanted to stay was defensive lineman Steve McLaren, who actually played in a game for the Jets after learning he had been traded to Tampa Bay.

That's just bizarre.

So it looks bad, especially with the Seahawks angry after losing to the Giants at this same venue last week? Well, maybe. The Jets will most likely leave Seattle with an 0-13 record, but remember that the 'Hawks have not been covering numbers lately (2-6 ATS last eight) and have become gradually more conservative on offense, running the ball almost 43% of the time over the last four games. After a hot start, Russell Wilson is coming down to earth as well (4 TD's, 3 INT's in last four games) as Seattle hasn't hit the 30-point mark in the last six contests.

And despite all the abuse that Williams and the defense are taking now, the Jets, believe it or not, are sixth best in the league in preventing TD's in the red zone (55%), and their D-line is 4th in Adjusted line Yards and 8th in Stuff Rate. You know the public isn't waiting in line to bet on the Jets. You may be getting the better of the deal by taking the points.

NFL Odds & Preview -- After 'Blitz-Gate' Is There Any Hope For the Jets?

<h3><strong>LOS ANGELES CHARGERS at LAS VEGAS RAIDERS, 8:20 PM ET</strong></h3>

The Chargers obviously have no hopes for the playoffs, with a 4-9 record (4-7-2 against the spread). The Raiders are fighting for their playoff lives; with their 7-6 mark (both SU &amp; ATS), they are behind the eight-ball. They have fallen behind Baltimore and New England is just a game behind them and has a tie-breaker advantage.

For the Chargers, the first meeting with the Raiders was gut-wrenching, as they thought they had scored a touchdown on the game's final play, only to see it overturned. The result was a 31-26 defeat, one of five in which they were beaten by five points or less. That game, which was played on November 8, represented a 300-plus-yard effort by rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, who has 25 TD passes on the year.

The consensus is that head coach Anthony Lynn is going to be fired at season's end. Some of what's happened has been out of his control, but he has been cited for blowing things in the end game. But if there is something important that has been salvaged out of this wretched campaign, it's that the Bolts have a quarterback they know they can go forward with.

The original thought about Herbert was that he was going to sit for a while as Tyrod Taylor kept the seat warm. That didn't last long; Taylor was dislodged by a punctured lung that happened as a result of a botched medical procedure. So you might say that in the development of Herbert, the team is ahead of schedule.

Herbert has had one attempt shy of 500 in just twelve games, and part of the reason for that involves injuries in the backfield. But one of the good signs is that Austin Ekeler is back and productive. He had 146 yards from scrimmage in last week's win over Atlanta - 79 rushing and 67 receiving. So more balance is quite possible.

So who's charged (pardon the pun) with stopping Herbert and Ekeler?

It seems there is enough of a problem with the Raider defense that Jon Gruden fired Paul Guenther as coordinator. Admittedly there have been a couple of experiences that have been embarrassing. In last week's 44-27 loss to the Colts, Indy had 456 yards, and ran over Silver and Black, with 6.8 yards a carry. The winless Jets had 206 rushing yards the week before, requiring the Raiders to get very lucky at the end.

Rod Marinelli has been named as the interim coordinator. He's been this team's defensive line coach, and was a coordinator in Dallas and Chicago, and worked under Gruden at Tampa Bay. BetOnline patrons may remember that he was also head coach of the Detroit Lions' 0-16 team in 2008.

Said Gruden: "We need somebody who has a different perspective, a different approach.” I found that interesting, as it implies that Marinelli and Guenther may not have been on the same page. It is also interesting that this "new approach" doesn't have much of a chance to take hold, with this four-day turnaround.

Currently Las Vegas is 26th in the league in yards allowed per drive and 28th in the red zone. They have allowed 4.7 yards per carry and 7.1 yards per pass. So we're not all that confident in their ability to keep Herbert "short," as he's been in his last three outings (5.15 yards per attempt).

Some of the Bolts' metrics don't resemble that which you may expect from a 4-9 team. They are seventh in that "yards per drive allowed" category. They have also forced punts on 40% of drives (third best) and three-and-outs 22.3% of the time (6th).

And while we could have gotten another laydown from them, after the 45-0 loss to New England the week before, they fought until the end against Atlanta, winning 20-17 at the gun, albeit after an interception of Matt Ryan with 30 seconds left.

This may also be worth noting - the Raiders have covered only nine of 29 games in the 2nd halves of seasons going back to 2017. Inasmuch as Las Vegas' "home field advantage" doesn't mean too much to us - heck, the owner won;t even show up for home games - we think the more judicious play here is to take the points with the CHARGERS.

Thursday Night NFL Odds & Preview -- Desperate Raiders Try to Slow Down Chargers

Nobody envies the spot that the Golden State Warriors are in on Friday night. The Warriors left it all on the floor in Wednesday’s 103-100 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, as LeBron James hit yet another signature shot with a 30-foot fadeaway three to win the game. The loss sent the Warriors into this win-or-go-home game against the winner of the #9 vs. #10 game, the Memphis Grizzlies.

Golden State is -4.5 with a total of 220.5 at <strong><a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/bookmaker/">Bookmaker Sportsbook</a></strong> for the last of the play-in tournament games. The winner draws a date with the Utah Jazz. The loser will go home empty-handed with no parting gifts.

Let’s dig into this one and see what we can find.
<h2>Memphis Grizzlies</h2>
This is a long way for Memphis to go, but it is a trip the Grizzlies just took this past weekend. Memphis had won five in a row before losing 113-101 in the regular season finale. That win wound up being the sixth in a row for Golden State, who has now covered seven straight.

Memphis played everybody in that game in hopes of avoiding the Lakers in the play-in round, but came up short. Maybe the Warriors should have done the same, but this was the likeliest outcome for them anyway. Jonas Valanciunas had 29 points on 12-of-15 shooting and 16 rebounds in the game, so the Warriors had no answer for him whatsoever. They had better find one quickly.

Ja Morant was just 7-of-21 from the floor against the Warriors and followed that up by going 8-of-20 against the Spurs in the 9/10 game. Once again, it was Valanciunas who led the way with 23 and 23. Dillon Brooks had 24 points. Memphis got next to no production from its bench in that game, as the team relied heavily on the starters to get over the hump and on to the next game.

For Memphis, defense is the key to success. Offensively, the team ranked 22nd in eFG% for the regular season, but 12th in eFG% defense. Memphis was 27th in 3P Rate and 20th in making those long-distance jumpers, so in today’s NBA, the Grizz have no choice but to play defense. They still ranked 18th in 3P% against, so this looks like a bit of an uphill climb, even with the spot for the Warriors. The Grizzlies were much better at defending twos at 52.5%, which ranked 11th.
<h2>Golden State Warriors</h2>
The story remained virtually the same for the Warriors in the play-in game as it has for most of the season. It was all on the shoulders of Steph Curry. Curry had 37 points and did his best to will the Warriors to victory, but it wasn’t enough, as Golden State blew a 13-point halftime lead.

Draymond Green had all of two points in support of Curry. Andrew Wiggins had 21, but didn’t really fill up the stat sheet elsewhere. Kevon Looney somehow only managed six points while securing five offensive rebounds. The supporting cast needs to be better for the Warriors in this game. Curry will get his, but it’s what the other guys do that will likely decide the game.

It could be tough sledding for the Memphis offense and that is especially true if Golden State finds somebody to slow down Valanciunas. The Warriors were top-five in defending two-point shots during the regular season. Golden State was also eighth in defending threes. How this team couldn’t play better may be something of a mystery.

After all, Golden State wound up 11th in 2P% and ninth in 3P%. Turnovers were a bit of a factor, along with an inability to get to the line regularly. The Lakers did have 10 more free throw attempts than the Warriors in that 8/9 game, so it wound up being a factor there.
<h2>Grizzlies vs. Warriors Free Pick</h2>
As bad as this spot is for the Warriors, and as identical as the records are, it’s hard to objectively look at Golden State and feel like they are the inferior team. Curry plays such a huge role to be sure and the supporting cast is iffy. With Memphis, Morant, Valanciunas, and Brooks can all shine and contribute.

Still, the Warriors are the better defensive team and not the team with the long travel after an emotional victory. It isn’t the best of spots for either team, but give me the Warriors here.

Stetson Hatters vs LSU Tigers NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 12/17/24

We got back in the win column on Tuesday to keep up a nice 7-2 run with the spotlight college basketball games at BangTheBook. I’m not sure this pace will keep up, but it’s been nice to be seeing them well plucking one game per day. Hopefully you’ve been able to hit these, but also have been able to use some of the analysis and the numbers from the resources to add more winners to your card.

It’s important to talk about the process and some of the stats that go into a handicap. When you move on to look at other games, you can apply those concepts and some of that statistical analysis to isolate other games that make sense.

For Wednesday, we’ve got a pretty big hoops board with only a couple of cancellations and only one afternoon start. Our focus will be in the Atlantic-10 for the matchup between VCU and Rhode Island. Money has hit the road Rams, who are -1 with a total of 137.5 at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/mybookie"><strong>MyBookie Sportsbook</strong></a> against the home Rams. That means that VCU has flipped into a favorite for this A-10 headliner between two quality teams.
<h3><strong><u>VCU Rams</u></strong></h3>
Virginia Commonwealth lost the first game to Rhode Island by an 83-68 score back on Saturday January 9. It was a rare poor performance for the VCU defense, which allowed 1.087 points per possession. That still stand s as the worst defensive output to date. Defense is the hallmark for Mike Rhoades’s team. The Rams rank fifth in adjusted defensive efficiency per Bart Torvik and 16th in eFG% defense.

Opponents are only shooting 30.1% from deep on VCU. Rhode Island managed to go 8-of-14 in the first meeting. For a Rhode Island team that shoots 32.8% from deep, that was very much an outlier performance. In fact, VCU has only allowed more than eight threes one time and that was against Penn State in the non-conference in a 72-69 loss. Rhode Island has only made more than eight threes twice and one of those games went to overtime.

So, we’ve chalked up the first game as an outlier. A performance unlikely to be repeated by either side. Evidently the betting market has done the same thing with VCU now favored after opening a slight underdog. It is a pretty big overreaction and adjustment to the line after VCU was -6 at home for the first game.

Maybe VCU hasn’t played its best basketball since that game, but it still seems like a pretty big overreaction. The Rams lost by 16 at Saint Bonaventure in what was their worst offensive performance of the season on January 20. Otherwise, they blew out Dayton and beat La Salle by double digits along with a seven-point win over George Washington. Nothing that would warrant a huge overcorrection to the line.

<h3><strong><u>Rhode Island Rams</u></strong></h3>
Rhode Island is just 6-5 in A-10 play thus far. The URI Rams are coming off of an ugly loss to Dayton on the road last weekend in a game where they scored just 56 points. Offense has been a little tough to come by for Rhode Island recently. Senior Fatts Russell has a very high usage rate again this season while being an inefficient offensive player. He’s shooting 37.7% on twos and 25% on threes. He’s also taken far and away the most shots of any player on the team. Basically, Rhode Island is okay when he has a decent game, but when he plays to his season level, they’ve been poor on offense.

When Russell scores at least 15 points, Rhode Island is 6-2. When he doesn’t, the Rams are just 2-7. He missed the win against Fordham. He had 23 against VCU in the first meeting, but 13 of the 23 points came at the free throw line. Another way in which that game was an outlier is that there were 54 free throw attempts accounting for 42 points.

Rhode Island is a pretty poor offensive team. They turn the ball over too much and aren’t overly efficient on offense, largely because of Russell’s insistence on shooting too much. The Rams are, however, a quality defensive squad for David Cox. The Rams are 42nd in adjusted defensive efficiency and 42nd in eFG% defense. They held VCU to .891 points per possession in the first meeting.
<h3><strong><u>Pick &amp; Analysis</u></strong></h3>
There is something very important to point out here. Rhode Island has played five straight games below 70 possessions. VCU is a faster team, but they’ve played three straight below that number against slower teams. URI’s pace has fallen off a bit, possibly because of their limited offensive upside.

VCU has the chance to dictate the pace in every game because of their high TO% on defense, but they also wind up turning the ball over a lot themselves. For VCU, over 23% of offensive possessions have ended with a turnover, but 25.5% of defensive possessions have ended with a turnover.

There are two plays I like in this game. The first is VCU. I agree with the line move from +1 to -1. I also like under 137.5. The first game was propped up by a lot of free throws and played to a much higher pace than either team usually plays at.
