But Rhule, who was not Fitterer's guy, gets the ax.

Rhule wasn't David Tepper's guy either, as it turned out. One thing you never want to hear an owner say about his team is that it lacked intensity because that is usually a reflection on the coach. And this was the case with last Sunday's 37-15 defeat at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers. Tepper essentially felt they stopped trying at some point.

Evidently there were also some personality issues with Rhule, stemming from his propensity to be a control freak. This has happened before with college coaches moving into the NFL; one example that comes readily to mind is Greg Schiano, who had trouble adjusting to players on the pro level, despite the fact that he had sent plenty of them into the league when he was coaching at Rutgers.



Rhule, who had great success at Temple and Baylor, created perhaps too much of a college atmosphere, hiring a lot of assistants from there (Phil Snow, the D-coordinator, has already been fired), and he seemingly wanted input in a number of areas that were not within the scope of his authority. This may be a bit surprising, considering he has at least spent some time in the league as an assistant.



So what happens now is this: he departs the scene and will be eligible for $40 million in pay that has been pledged to him over the course of his contract. And the team has elevated Steve Wilks, the secondary coach, to the top job. Wilks served one year as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and won three games. So it's not like this is an infusion of new ideas that have worked somewhere else. He was part of this regime, although there is almost no way to avoid that when a guy comes into the interim position.



But who really knows what was going on behind the scenes. It was no secret that Rhule was one of those guys who started the season on "the hot seat." And he was everyone's favorite to be the first coach to get fired (if you had that ticket, you cashed it). Tepper, one of the wealthiest owners in the NFL (and that's saying something), is not known for his patience. And he didn't get involved in this franchise to stay mediocre.

The U.S.Open is the next major on the calendar, and it is being played at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. But one thing you have to understand about the U.S. Open is that it has more than its share of winners who had never been heard from before, and haven't been heard from much again.

That includes Lucas Glover, the 2009 champion, who has had only three PGA Tour wins in his 19 years as a professional. Andy North won the U.S. Open not once but twice (1978, 1985), and had only one other victory on tour. After 1985, he missed the cut in seven of his next ten U.S.Open appearances, finishing no better than 37th.

Cyril Walker was the 1924 champion, beating Bobby Jones.That was his only top ten in the U.S.Open. He did reach the quarterfinals of the PGA Championship (a match play event at the time) in 1931. Nine years later, he was working as a caddy at a municipal golf course in Miami Beach.

And then there is the case of Orville Moody. We must explain that the U.S. Open allows for players to go through local and sectional qualifying, meaning that anyone with a two-handicap or better can give it a try. Moody qualified through this process in 1969, then proceeded to win the tournament. It was his only victory in a PGA Tour event, although we should mention that he won plenty of times on the Senior Tour.

There are a number of other examples. The point we're trying to make is that it should be no surprise if the eventual winner comes out of nowhere, so maybe it's not a bad idea to look further down the odds list and, well, look for someone who could come out of nowhere.
