Massachusetts Minutemen vs West Virginia Mountaineers NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 11/8/24

We still have a little while to wait for the 2019 Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York, but early odds are out for the third and final leg of the Triple Crown. It doesn’t look like Maximum Security will be in the race, so owner Gary West will continue to fight his battles off the track instead of on it.

Preakness Stakes winner War of Will is running, which is rather interesting with no Triple Crown at stake, but the three-year-old colt bounced back well after the Kentucky Derby and is expected to do the same here at Belmont Park. Right now, there are 12 hopefuls listed on the betting board, but there is a chance that other horses jump in the mix.

There are some familiar names and some unfamiliar names on the list for the Belmont Stakes. The horses with the short prices are all very familiar. Tacitus was third for trainer Bill Mott at Churchill Downs back on May 4. A win in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct and a good showing in the Tampa Bay Derby are the reasons why Tacitus tops the board at +250.

It would be War of Will, but oddsmakers and bettors are rightly skeptical about three huge Grade 1 stakes races in five weeks for the Mark Casse colt. It’s very possible that War of Will goes off the favorite, especially because we’ll have revisionist history “what could have been” narrative since WoW was one of the horses most impacted by Maximum Security’s interference in the Kentucky Derby.

Casse was concerned about another rail draw for War of Will, but it didn’t matter in the Preakness. We’ll see if the same happens here. This is a 1 1/2 mile race and probably the longest that these horses will run in their careers, so that’s more reason for those to be worried about fatigue for the Preakness champ.

Game Winner has not been a winner for a while. In fact, the Bob Baffert colt hasn’t won in his last three tries. Strong showings last year in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, American Pharoah Stakes, and the Del Mar Futurity have resulted in a second at the Rebel Stakes, a second at the Santa Anita Derby, and a fifth in the Kentucky Derby. With what handicappers hope is a smoother, drier track, this is a speed horse very worthy of making a run. The current +550 price tag could very well be better than what we see on race day if you want to tie your money up for another two weeks.

Owendale had a terrific third-place run at the Preakness as one of the longer shots on the board. He’s +700 for trainer Brad Cox here. Owendale finished behind Everfast, who hit the board as an even longer shot in the Preakness. That was the best finish for the Dale Romans colt since the Holy Bull back in February. This will be Everfast’s seventh race of 2019 and third since May 4. I’m guessing Everfast will not be popular on race day and this 12/1 price could be had or better.

Master Fencer might be pretty interesting on Belmont day. This colt finished sixth at Churchill, but made up a lot of ground on a sloppy track. This is the longest of the Triple Crown races and he was closing quickly. Workout times haven’t been impressive, but there could be some hidden speed here at 12/1.

Plus Que Parfait, Spinoff, and Tax all had disappointing Kentucky Derby runs. Trainer Danny Gargan may opt to switch Tax to a turf horse, so there’s a good chance that he doesn’t even run here. Save that balloon number for race day.

Trainer Todd Pletcher is likely to send Spinoff back out after a very disappointing Kentucky Derby trip. The wet and muddy track may have been the primary factor, but the step up in class didn’t help either. Plus Que Parfait <strong><a href="https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/Walsh_had_to_back_off_Plus_Que_Parfait_no_Belmont_Stakes_try_123">will not run</a></strong> in the Belmont Stakes so DO NOT BET IT.

That leaves the three newcomers. Sir Winston, Intrepid Heart, and Global Campaign. Sir Winston just ran to a second-place finish in the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont on May 11. Intrepid Heart was third and Global Campaign won. Global Campaign is another that <strong><a href="https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/Belmont_Stakes_timing_not_ideal_for_Global_Campaign_123">WILL NOT RUN</a></strong> in the Belmont and will likely run the Ohio Derby later in June at Thistledown.

Intrepid Heart is another Pletcher horse and is very likely to run after the decent showing in the Peter Pan. The only other race on Intrepid Heart’s resume was an allowance at Keeneland in early April. John Velazquez will likely be up on Intrepid Heart after a rather strange trip in the Peter Pan with a stumble out of the gate and a lot of inexperience from the horse. Velazquez is the type of guy you’d want in the irons for the son of Tapit and I’m guessing 14/1 is a better price than we’ll see on race day. This is one to get now.

Sir Winston has one win in his career, but is a horse that might love the distance here. He’s a closer that gets off to bad starts and makes up ground at the end. With shorter distances, it’s harder to get on the board. With this long race, the lack of speed, but the significant endurance could make Sir Winston a really intriguing bet. This 16/1 price may be a bit lower on race day, but likely not by much.

Intrepid Heart is the only one I’d consider getting a jump on now. Wait for race week and the post draw with the others.

This Grade 2 race features some of the top fillies in the sport and is the main event on the day before the Preakness Stakes. Formerly known as the Pimlico Oaks from 1919-51, this is a 1 1/8 mile, or nine-furlong, race around the dirt track in Baltimore.

None of the nine fillies in the field ran in the Kentucky Oaks. In this preview, we’ll break down the morning line odds, the post positions, and the nine horses in an effort to make some money with Friday’s race, which has a post time of 4:48 p.m. ET.

This is the second leg of the Filly Triple Crown. The Kentucky Oaks and the Acorn Stakes are the other two. Davona Dale is the only filly to win all three. That happened in 1979. Davona Dale just might be the best filly ever with wins in the Mother Goose Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, Fantasy Stakes, and also the Bonnie Miss Stakes.

There are some very familiar names and some not-so-familiar names in this year’s race. Todd Pletcher has two fillies and Brad Cox has another. We don’t see guys like D Wayne Lukas, Steve Asmussen, Bob Baffert, either Servis, or Dale Romans. That shouldn’t matter because last year’s winning trainer was Kellyn Gorder and the winning jockey was Paco Lopez.

This should be a competitive and fun race. Hopefully the rain holds off on Friday. The chance of rain in Friday’s forecast could really change this handicap.

The starting point should always be the Todd Pletcher horses in this race. Pletcher has two, as second favorite <strong>Always Shopping</strong> will be ridden by Manuel Franco and <strong>Off Topic</strong> will be ridden by world-renowned rider John Velazquez. Pletcher is in search of his fifth Black-Eyed Susan Stakes win. His most recent was with Stopchargingmaria in 2014. Two of Pletcher’s four wins in this race have been with Velazquez. It is extremely interesting that Velazquez is in the irons for Off Topic and not Always Shopping. Those are the types of things you want to look for in these races.

Always Shopping won the Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct back on April 6 with the third-lowest odds in the six-horse race. Always Shopping simply outran Positive Spirit on the final stretch for the victory. Off Topic never really made a big push for Velazquez. It seemed like more of a casual run than a sprint.

Always Shopping comes from the Mike Repole Stable, which was the stable for Stopchargingmaria in 2014. That was with Javier Castellano instead of Franco. Again, something seems a little strange here in this race with regards to the Pletcher horses.

Off Topic has the bloodline (Street Sense), the jockey/trainer tandem (Velazquez/Pletcher), and also the stable, as WinStar Farm bred the horse. Off Topic hasn’t been able to win races, but has hit the board late. This may simply be a horse without enough giddy up to win. The Gazelle was a much bigger test than the allowance races and maidens and it wasn’t a very impressive showing.

<strong>Point of Honor</strong> will be a very popular bet on Friday with trainer George Weaver and jockey Javier Castellano, even as the favorite. Castellano won this race in 2014 with Pletcher’s Stopchargingmaria and in 2015 with Keen Pauline from trainer Dale Romans. The daughter of Curlin, Point of Honor was fourth in the Gulfstream Park Oaks, which is probably why handicappers are down a little on her. She did win the shorter Suncoast Stakes and a maiden at Gulfstream in December, but was fourth in the six-horse GP Oaks to Champagne Anyone, Dunbar Road, and Cookie Dough.

Point of Honor had a bad start in that race and made up ground, but did so a bit too early, as Castellano started to challenge the leaders, but quickly gave up the pace to the hard chargers on the outside. <strong>Cookie Dough</strong> completely ran out of gas in that same race, so Irad Ortiz Jr. will have to pace the filly a little bit better this time around.

It was the same thing for Cookie Dough in the Davona Dale in early March. Jeltrin won at 50/1 by chasing down Cookie Dough over the final furlong. Cookie Dough has a great chance to hit the board and set the pace here, but winning is another story, as this horse just isn’t built for distance.

Let’s talk about <strong>Las Setas</strong>. The Katharine Voss filly is a Maryland regular at Laurel Park and local jockey Jevian Toledo will be the rider. Las Setas is perfect with wins in the Weber City Miss, Beyond the Wire, and Wide Country, all at Laurel Park. The longest of those races, however, was a 1 1/16 trip in the last race on April 20. An impressive set of results, but this is a big step up in class for the home team.

<strong>Brill</strong> is coming off of a decent trip at Oaklawn in the Fantasy Stakes with a third to Lady Apple and Motion Emotion. A third at Santa Anita in the Chandelier Grace 1 race and a fourth at the Del Mar Debutante have all given the horse a change of scenery. That can only help heading up to Pimlico. Brill went off as the second favorite and gave a good trip, but seemed a bit gassed for the final stretch after mostly matching Motion Emotion stride for stride for about six furlongs.

That’s the big problem with this race. We don’t have closers. We have pace setters, but we’re lacking closers.

Could <strong>Ulele </strong>be a closer? We don’t really know what we have in the Brad Cox filly because she hasn’t raced much. She was third back in February at Oaklawn to Motion Emotion, the favorite in the Fantasy Stakes, and Off Topic, one of the Pletcher fillies in this race. A win in the allowance race at Keeneland on 1 1/16 miles over High Regard was impressive. High Regard won its allowance on Kentucky Oaks day and had run in the Davona Dale, Golden Rod, and Rags to Riches Stakes, hitting the board in the latter two.

Ulele is an unknown, but jockey Joel Rosario is not. Rosario won the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes in 2013 on all-time name team horse Fiftyshadesofhay. Interestingly, Rosario won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last year with Jaywalk, but she ran 13th in the Kentucky Oaks with Javier Castellano in the irons. Rosario opted to ride with Baffert’s Flor de La Mar, but that horse finished 11th. It was a 20/1 shot, however, and Jaywalk was 8/1.

Something tells me that Rosario knows how to pick them. It was Florent Geroux’s ride at Keeneland in the allowance race on April 4. Geroux will be on Brill in this race.

All in all, this race looks pretty wide open. Always Shopping will likely close the favorite with wins on 1 1/8 mile races at Aqueduct. I can’t get on board Cookie Dough with the lack of finishing in the last two races and with this race being 1/8 mile longer than the Davona Dale and an extra 1/16 relative to the Gulfstream Oaks.

I’m going in on Ulele here. The Cox/Rosario tandem is a good one and he’s got a busy weekend with two horses in the Preakness and others on the undercard. My guess is that he feels like he has them well-trained for the shorter of the Triple Crown races.

Cookie Dough will likely hit the board late and is a definite consideration in tri and super wagering. The fact that Off Topic got Velazquez and Always Shopping got Franco is rather interesting. Always Shopping has those two wins on 1 1/8 mile trips with Franco, so I’m looking at an exacta box of Always Shopping and Ulele, with the hope that Ulele can find a way to win and bump the payout.

The bloodline for Brill with Medaglia d’Oro is a lot to overlook and two Grade 1 stakes races are more than we can say for most of the contenders. I’ll throw Brill in a box trifecta with Always Shopping and Ulele.

The spotlight race on Friday May 3 at Churchill Downs is the Kentucky Oaks. The signature three-year-old filly race is the day before the Kentucky Derby and one of the best showcases for female horses in all of racing. A full field of 14 horses are entered and there are two alternates ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Much like we discussed in our Kentucky Derby preview, wet conditions are expected for the week leading up to this weekend, so we could be looking at a muddy and sloppy track. Track conditions have to be factored in to every horse handicap.

The 1 1/8 miles required for the horses in this race is longer than all of the lead-up races other than the Demoiselle and the Gazelle Stakes, so this is a lot like the Triple Crown races in that regard.

You’ll want to remember that as we break down the field for the Lillies for the Fillies in the 2019 Kentucky Oaks.

<strong>Bellafina</strong>

When you talk about dominant in filly races, you talk about Bellafina. The 2/1 favorite rolled through the Road to the Kentucky Oaks circuit with wins at the Santa Ynez, Las Virgenes, and the Santa Anita Oaks, as she outlasted Flor de La Mar for the win. That Santa Anita Oaks featured only four horses and the conditions were picture perfect for racing, so it’s fair to be less than impressed with that performance. Bellafina was the 1/5 favorite.

Bellafina was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenille Fillies last year at Churchill, but she was in heat, so racing wasn’t the only thing on her mind. She finished behind Jaywalk, Restless Rider, and Vibrance, who did not run well in other lead-ups and will skip this race.

The odds suggest that it’s Bellafina’s race to lose, but distance hasn’t been kind to her and it will likely be wet and sloppy. She only ran against four horses in the Santa Anita and five in the Las Virgenes. While a deserving favorite, this is a much larger field and it can make horses uncomfortable.

<strong>Champagne Anyone</strong>

Champagne Anyone gave a strong effort in traffic in the Forward Gal Stakes back in February with a third-place finish. She moved deftly along the rail on the backstretch to get into contention and then gave a strong final push to finish third behind favorite Feedback and Bye Bye J. That was only a seven-furlong race and Champagne Anyone would have caught the two leaders had it gone any longer. That’s relevant here because this is a 1 1/8 mile race.

Champagne Anyone had a strong win in the Gulfstream Oaks over Dunbar Road, who is an alternate here, but would be among the favorites as you can see on the board above. She’s had some good practice times and put on blinkers that could be a big help in traffic here in this race. It doesn’t hurt that she comes from Street Sense, the winner of the 2007 Kentucky Derby and second-place finisher to Curlin in the Preakness that same year.

<strong>Restless Rider</strong>

Restless Rider was second to Jaywalk in that Juvenile Fillies race at Churchill last November. She was also second to Liora in the Golden Rod Stakes and then second to Out For A Spin in the Ashland Stakes. She’s a Kentucky horse through and through with a lot of runs at Churchill and Keeneland. She’ll be on the board here. Whether or not she’ll win will depend on how she closes the last eighth of a mile. She’s been right there at the end of most of her second-place finishes.

<strong>Serengeti Empress</strong>

Serengeti Empress is a great horse with a great name, but sometimes timing is everything. She’s slated to run in this race, but she suffered a very scary incident at the Fair Grounds Oaks with some respiratory bleeding. That was about five weeks ago. She’s stepping up in class and doing so at less than 100%. That’s a pass.

&nbsp;

<strong>Jaywalk</strong>

Realistically, there are four horses that can win this thing. Bellafina, Champagne Anyone, Restless Rider, and Jaywalk. This filly has the very experienced Javier Castellano in the irons. He won on Cathryn Sophia back in 2016 for John Servis and the two are back together here.

The concern about Jaywalk here is that she’s trending downward. A third in the Ashland and a fourth in the Davona Dale were not good showcases heading into the Kentucky Oaks. On the other hand, she was the best in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on this same track last November. That was the team of Servis and Rosario in that one, but Jaywalk went basically wire to wire and got stronger at the finish by opening up a six-length win.

John, much like his brother Jason, doesn’t push his horses too hard in lead-ups to major races. I can’t help but wonder if he was holding Jaywalk back a bit after that big win, with this spot all but set in stone for the Kentucky Oaks.

<strong>Picks</strong>

I’m actually going to stay away from the favorite in Bellafina here. She’s a deserving favorite, but I think the other contenders are just as strong, if not stronger. Jaywalk and Champagne Anyone are my top two for this race and I’d put them in an exacta box.

Restless Rider should also hit the board. A trifecta box of Jaywalk, Champagne Anyone, Restless Rider, and Bellafina makes a lot of sense here, as those are the top four contenders and I’d be surprised to see any other horses sneak into the top three. Hope for Bellafina to hit the board third for the best payout.

But we're not sure that his recent declaration for president is going to be the thing that has enough of a considerable effect, even after creating a "cause celebre" with his (in his view) persecution by a liberal Manhattan judge.</p>



<p>Musk, the 2021 recipient, is the justifiable favorite. Even though his purchase of Twitter was finalized in 2022, the sweeping changes he is making are the source of much controversy as they seek to transform the way that free speech is, for lack of a better word, governed in the social media world. It is a powerful and influential platform to control.</p>



<p>Musk, it goes without saying, also makes news with anything he does with SpaceX, and he was one of the original founders of Open AI, which, through Chat GPT and other offerings, will change the world. One concerning note is that Quantrill has allowed at least two homers in three of his past four outings.</p><p>So far this season, the Rockies are averaging 4.2 runs per game, which is 20th in the league. However, they have been much better at home, averaging 4.9 runs per game. As a team, they are batting .243, which is 12th in the league, and their team on-base percentage of .305 is 18th in the MLB.</p>

<p>Michael Toglia and Brenton Doyle are tied for the team lead in home runs, with 21, but Toglia is batting just .219 this season, while Doyle comes in with a batting average of .269. Doyle has been hot of late, going 8/26 in his last seven games with five runs scored and one homer. Jake Cave is also swinging a hot bat, going 7/13 in his last three games with a home run.</p>

The Kentucky Derby ended in historic fashion with the disqualification of Maximum Security. It was a decision that cost a lot of people a lot of money. It also may have cost us a chance at back-to-back Triple Crown winners.

Justify swept horse racing’s three most notable races last year to give us our second Triple Crown winner in four years. Country House would have been either second or third on the odds board for the Preakness Stakes on May 18, but many would have viewed the horse as a longer shot than that to pick up the win. Maximum Security would have been the clear-cut favorite.

With Country House now sidelined with a cough and a lot of horses sitting out the Preakness, we have something of a forgettable field for the second leg of the Triple Crown. When that happens, we usually get some betting value out of the equation.

Early odds are out for the May 18 race and Improbable is the 2/1 favorite. War of Will is the second favorite at 3/1. After that, the odds range from 8/1 on Alwaysmining, Anothertwistafate, and Bourbon War, who would have been more appropriate running at Churchill Downs, to Laughing Fox at 20/1.

We’ll take a more detailed look at the odds and the race handicap for the Preakness next week after the post positions are drawn, but it is never a bad idea to get an early look at the field.

Improbable was one of the favorites that I faded in the Kentucky Derby. The Bob Baffert colt shook off the elements to have a decent run with a fifth-place finish, but it certainly wasn’t the result that jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. expected. There was a ton of jockey movement in the lead-up to the race and it’s fair to wonder if Baffert would have preferred somebody else, though Ortiz’s trip wasn’t the problem.

There were actually a lot of horses bunched together within five or six lengths of the eventual winner and Improbable was among them 3.5 lengths back. With top three finishers Country House, Code of Honor, and Tacitus out, it makes perfect sense that Improbable would be the favorite and should close the favorite also.

That hasn’t stopped Baffert from reuniting with old friend Mike Smith, who was in the irons on Cutting Humor for the Derby. That is sure to drive some betting action.

Win Win Win is a possibility for the Preakness, though he was not listed on the odds board at BetOnline as of May 8.

War of Will may be the colt to watch in this one. He finished seventh in the Derby at 15/1, but was saddled, pardon the pun, with the innermost post for the race. All things considered, it was still a pretty good trip for Mark Casse’s colt. It was also a scary race for jockey Tyler Gaffalione, as War of Will got obstructed by Maximum Security.

The fact that Casse and Gaffalione are considering going right back out there means that the horse is in good condition and is ready to run. The November transition from turf to dirt, coupled with a ninth in the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds and the seventh at the Kentucky Derby, do make it hard to bet on this horse and a lot will likely stay away. Better odds should be had closer to post time.

Bourbon War is 8/1 and ran fourth to Maximum Security, Bodexpress, and Code of Honor in the Florida Derby. Considering Maximum Security and Code of Honor both hit the board, maybe that says something about Bourbon War. Also, he was second to Code of Honor in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream earlier in March. With Irad Ortiz Jr. freed up from Baffert’s decision to go with Smith, Mark Hennig should be reunited with the jockey that was on Bourbon War in those two races. He knows the horse. That cannot be understated.

The son of Tapit probably won’t be 8/1 on race day, so you could get a little bit of surplus value by tying up your money early.

Bodexpress probably won’t be 16/1 on race day with a weaker field and a good showing in the Florida Derby. That’s another one where you can grab a price right now. He also had a decent run in the Kentucky Derby, but was greatly affected by Maximum Security’s block on the inside lanes. Jockey Chris Landeros really pulled him back at that point. I would think a little bit of money comes in on him, simply because of the name recognition from the Derby. He’ll probably be somewhere in the 12/1 range, so there may be some value in pouncing early.
