The NASCAR Cup Championship Playoffs are down to the Round of 8 and there are only four races left to go in what has been a wild and wonky 2020 season. Credit to NASCAR officials, the drivers, the teams, and everybody involved in the process. The calendar had 36 races scheduled and the 33rd race of the season will be the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Fans will be in attendance for this one and the allotted tickets have been sold out as the drivers return to a 1.5-mile track for just the second time in the playoffs and just the second time since they were last at Kansas back on July 23. Denny Hamlin won that race.

Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin sit 1 &amp; 2 in the readjusted standings and also sit as co-favorites in this race. The NASCAR schedule was impacted by a lot of cancellations and postponements, but we still managed to see nine races on 1.5-mile tracks prior to this one. Hamlin has the only two wins between the two guys, with wins at Homestead-Miami and Kansas.

As we often see on 1.5-mile tracks, the prices are depressed on several guys, as the prices for the middle of the pack guys go up a bit. We’ve got four drivers under 6/1 this week. We haven’t seen that in a long time.
<h3><strong><u>Standings Update</u></strong></h3>
As mentioned, the standings were readjusted for the next round of the playoffs. All drivers still in contention were reset to 4,000 points and then bonus points accrued during the regular season and the playoffs were applied. Harvick leads with 4,067 points. Hamlin is second with 4,053 points. Brad Keselowski is third with 4,035 points. Chase Elliott is fourth with 4,027 points, which puts him just above the cut line thanks to his bonus points from winning on the Roval last week.

Joey Logano has 4,022 points. Martin Truex Jr. has 4,017 points and is one of those drivers under 6/1 this week. Alex Bowman has 4,009 points and Kurt Busch has 4,006 points. Busch survived thanks to his win on the 1.5-mile track at Las Vegas in the last round.
<h3><strong><u>Kansas</u></strong><strong><u> Speedway</u></strong></h3>
This is about as generic as a track gets in NASCAR. There is a road course at Kansas and maybe that will be part of the schedule down the line, but the tri-oval with four turns and 1.5 miles of racing is the track in question this week. Progressive turns between 17-20 degrees and a pretty flat backstretch with 5-degree banking are the hallmarks of this track.

NASCAR has come to Kansas twice a year since 2011. Racing started here back in 2001 when Jeff Gordon won the first of three races just off of I-70. There is a Hollywood Casino on site, hence the sponsorship that has been in place since 2010 for this race.

There have been five different winners over the last five years and none of them are surprising names, as Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Chase Elliott, and Denny Hamlin have been victorious. Hamlin also won earlier this year and has three wins on the track. Another win would make him the only driver with four career wins at Kansas.
<h3><strong><u>Cup Championship Odds</u></strong></h3>
Before we finish looking at this race, here are the <a href="http://bangthebook.com/s/mybookie"><strong>MyBookie</strong> </a>prices for the overall champion with eight drivers left:

Harvick, Hamlin, Elliott, and Keselowski have an inside track to the season finale at Phoenix. Harvick owns Phoenix and is the points leader, so he is the favorite. Hamlin is also just about a lock to advance to the next round, unless all three wins in this round come from drivers below him, which is entirely possible.
<h3><strong><u>Kansas</u></strong><strong><u> Results</u></strong></h3>
There have been 29 races at Kansas. Kevin Harvick has been in all of them and has three wins, nine top-five finishes, and the highest average finish in 9.6th place. Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson also have nine top-five finishes each. Chase Elliott has four in just nine starts here.

Joey Logano’s aggressiveness has hurt him and helped him here. He has two wins and seven top-five finishes, but he’s only finished on the lead lap 12 times in 22 races. When he finishes the race, he generally does very well, but he’s had issues at this track. He’s finished the race 18 of 22 times, but has had various hiccups at this track.

If we look specifically at the last 10 races, Kyle Busch leads in top-five and top-10 finishes with six and eight, respectively, but he is having a terrible season by his standards. Harvick, Truex, and Hamlin each have five. Harvick’s 417 points are 30 more than Busch and 51 more than Truex, so this has certainly been a strong track for him. Harvick struggled last round, but Talladega and road courses are not his forte.

Kurt Busch doesn’t have a win here, but has the fourth-highest average finish over the last 10 starts behind Harvick, Truex, and brother Kyle.

Basically, the big takeaway here is that you should not expect a surprise.
<h3><strong><u>Hollywood Casino 400 Picks</u></strong></h3>
To me, it has to be Harvick and Hamlin this week. With both guys at +400, you’ll still turn a profit if you bet a unit on each. <p>The G3 Lecomte Stakes has been a key prep race on the road to the Triple Crown series since 1962 when it became a race for horses aged three. Prior to the changes in entry, the race was run as the LeCompte Handicap between 1943 and 1961.</p>



<p>There have been some standout runners in the Lecomte throughout history, including Risen Star, who was beaten in the Grade 3 before landing the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in 1988.</p>



<p>Oxbow became the most dominant winner of the race in 2013 when winning by over eleven lengths. He later landed the Preakness Stakes. War of Will was the most recent winner to land Triple Crown success after landing the Preakness in 2019.</p>

<p>One of the most eye-catching runners in the field this weekend is Track Phantom. The three-year-old appears to be the leading Triple Crown contender in the Steven Asmussen yard this season, and his lofty reputation was increased in late December when storming to a dominant victory over course and distance in the Gun Runner Stakes.</p>



<p>That success scored a speed rating of 97, with re-appearing rival Nash finishing back in third. Asmussen has a good record in the Lecomte, most recently winning the race with the impressive Midnight Bourbon in 2021.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ethan-energy">Ethan Energy</h3>



<p>Brad Cox brings a strong team to Fair Grounds on Saturday, with Nash among the preferred selections in the betting. However, given that the runner has already been soundly beaten by Track Phantom, it could be worth assessing Ethan Energy.</p>



<p>The three-year-old has looked progressive so far, and took a massive step forward when running over 1 1/16 for the first time at Fair Grounds in December. He dominated the field to score a 92 speed rating, and further improvement certainly makes him a clear win contender in Louisiana on Saturday.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-can-group">Can Group</h3>



<p>One of the most interesting runners in the Kentucky Derby prep this weekend is Can Group for Mark Casse. The trainer won this race in back-to-back years in 2019 and 2020, and he sends a reverting runner from the turf to compete on the dirt this weekend. The three-year-old made his first two starts on the dirt, most recently finishing behind the talented Timberlake over five furlongs in July.</p>



<p>He made a home for himself on the turf when winning the G2 Bourbon over 1 1/16 miles, before traveling well in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf to take fourth at Santa Anita. If he could transfer that form back onto the dirt, then he could be a major player in this company on Saturday.</p>

<p>Track Phantom appears to be an incredibly progressive runner for the Asmussen team, and he will likely take all the beating this weekend. <p>San Diego found themselves down 36-26 at halftime and couldn’t close the gap, as they were outscored 42-40 in the 2nd half. Despite putting up 40 points after the break, their defense couldn’t slow down Idaho State enough to mount a comeback.</p><p>San Diego struggled offensively in their last game, shooting just 36.7% from the field and 19.2% from three-point range, hitting only 5 of 26 attempts. Their effective field goal percentage was 40%, but they did manage to convert 89.5% of their free throws, going 17 for 19 from the line.</p> <p>Kody Clouet and Isaiah Griffin each scored 15 points, while Santiago Trouet added 14 points and 7 rebounds, shooting 60% from the field. Evan Otten also contributed 13 points and 9 rebounds, hitting 66.7% of his shots.</p><p>San Diego's defense held their opponent to 78 points, even while allowing them to shoot 89% from the free-throw line, where they made 17 of 19 attempts. Southern Utah Thunderbirds vs San Diego Toreros NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 11/22/24

The Kentucky Derby ended in historic fashion with the disqualification of Maximum Security. It was a decision that cost a lot of people a lot of money. It also may have cost us a chance at back-to-back Triple Crown winners.

Justify swept horse racing’s three most notable races last year to give us our second Triple Crown winner in four years. Country House would have been either second or third on the odds board for the Preakness Stakes on May 18, but many would have viewed the horse as a longer shot than that to pick up the win. Maximum Security would have been the clear-cut favorite.

With Country House now sidelined with a cough and a lot of horses sitting out the Preakness, we have something of a forgettable field for the second leg of the Triple Crown. When that happens, we usually get some betting value out of the equation.

Early odds are out for the May 18 race and Improbable is the 2/1 favorite. War of Will is the second favorite at 3/1. After that, the odds range from 8/1 on Alwaysmining, Anothertwistafate, and Bourbon War, who would have been more appropriate running at Churchill Downs, to Laughing Fox at 20/1.

We’ll take a more detailed look at the odds and the race handicap for the Preakness next week after the post positions are drawn, but it is never a bad idea to get an early look at the field.

Improbable was one of the favorites that I faded in the Kentucky Derby. The Bob Baffert colt shook off the elements to have a decent run with a fifth-place finish, but it certainly wasn’t the result that jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. expected. There was a ton of jockey movement in the lead-up to the race and it’s fair to wonder if Baffert would have preferred somebody else, though Ortiz’s trip wasn’t the problem.

There were actually a lot of horses bunched together within five or six lengths of the eventual winner and Improbable was among them 3.5 lengths back. With top three finishers Country House, Code of Honor, and Tacitus out, it makes perfect sense that Improbable would be the favorite and should close the favorite also.

That hasn’t stopped Baffert from reuniting with old friend Mike Smith, who was in the irons on Cutting Humor for the Derby. That is sure to drive some betting action.

Win Win Win is a possibility for the Preakness, though he was not listed on the odds board at BetOnline as of May 8.

War of Will may be the colt to watch in this one. He finished seventh in the Derby at 15/1, but was saddled, pardon the pun, with the innermost post for the race. All things considered, it was still a pretty good trip for Mark Casse’s colt. It was also a scary race for jockey Tyler Gaffalione, as War of Will got obstructed by Maximum Security.

The fact that Casse and Gaffalione are considering going right back out there means that the horse is in good condition and is ready to run. The November transition from turf to dirt, coupled with a ninth in the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds and the seventh at the Kentucky Derby, do make it hard to bet on this horse and a lot will likely stay away. Better odds should be had closer to post time.

Bourbon War is 8/1 and ran fourth to Maximum Security, Bodexpress, and Code of Honor in the Florida Derby. Considering Maximum Security and Code of Honor both hit the board, maybe that says something about Bourbon War. Also, he was second to Code of Honor in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream earlier in March. With Irad Ortiz Jr. freed up from Baffert’s decision to go with Smith, Mark Hennig should be reunited with the jockey that was on Bourbon War in those two races. He knows the horse. That cannot be understated.

The son of Tapit probably won’t be 8/1 on race day, so you could get a little bit of surplus value by tying up your money early.

Bodexpress probably won’t be 16/1 on race day with a weaker field and a good showing in the Florida Derby. That’s another one where you can grab a price right now. He also had a decent run in the Kentucky Derby, but was greatly affected by Maximum Security’s block on the inside lanes. Jockey Chris Landeros really pulled him back at that point. I would think a little bit of money comes in on him, simply because of the name recognition from the Derby. He’ll probably be somewhere in the 12/1 range, so there may be some value in pouncing early.
