It was right there for the taking for the Columbus Blue Jackets. They led 3-0 in an elimination game. They could have knocked off the Toronto Maple Leafs and punched a ticket to face the winner of Saturday’s Tampa Bay vs. Philadelphia game. Instead, they did what the Maple Leafs did in Game 3. They blew a three-goal lead and went on to lose in overtime.

The back-and-forth in this series has been incredible. Aaron Portzline of The Athletic Columbus <a href="https://twitter.com/Aportzline/status/1291962519611940864">summed it up best</a> on Twitter. Columbus scored the first two goals of the series. Toronto scored the next six. Columbus scored the next seven. Now, Toronto has scored the last four. The team that scores the last goal could very well be the one that advances.

The Maple Leafs are favored in the -145 range in the betting markets. The Blue Jackets are +125 to erase the bad taste of Game 4. How they do that is anybody’s guess. It was a slower burn for the Maple Leafs. The Blue Jackets led 3-0 with four minutes left in regulation and gave up two goals in 51 seconds and then a third with just 23 seconds left in the game.

Columbus is saying all of the right things about looking ahead and moving forward and this and that, but the reality is that they shouldn’t even have to play an extra 60 minutes in this series. They may also have a goaltender controversy on their hands.

Elvis Merzlikins took over for Joonas Korpisalo in Game 3 in a move that head coach John Tortorella said was more about sparking the team than Korpisalo’s play. Then Merzlikins got the start in Game 4 and was brilliant for 56 minutes. As the Maple Leafs scored to make it 3-1, Merzlikins was less aggressive on shooters. Columbus collapsed in front to protect him and maybe impacted his ability to make saves. Merzlikins went down too early and left the top of the net unprotected. He got too small in the net and left his legs open.

It was just a snowball effect for the Blue Jackets, who rested on their laurels after going up 3-0. It was the mark of a young, inexperienced team, but the Blue Jackets are anything but. Now, they have to rally. They’ve done it before. They did it in Game 3 and did it in Game 1 last year against Tampa Bay.

The Maple Leafs don’t have any such controversy. Frederik Andersen was fine in Game 4. He didn’t really have much of a chance on any of the Columbus goals and bounced back pretty well from the Game 3 collapse by him and his team. He didn’t see much work in the overtime period, as the play was dictated by his team, but he played big in the net when he needed to.

When the game is on the line, the best are supposed to take over. Auston Matthews did that for Toronto. He led all skaters with 10 shots on goal. He had the game winner and two assists in the third period. On the other hand, Matthews was held in check for most of the first two periods. He and John Tavares came alive late in regulation and on into the overtime period. The Maple Leafs will now have the last change for Game 5 and that could have a massive impact on what happens.

The Blue Jackets have some drama on defense as well. Dean Kukan was back in the lineup for Game 4, but he was injured during Game 3 and Columbus had to shorten the bench on the blue line. In Game 4, Zach Werenski was limited to just 21:24 of ice time. It was Seth Jones logging 33:11 and David Savard and Vladislav Gavrikov that picked up the slack with 27:41 and 29:04, respectively. Werenski missed the last nine minutes of regulation and all of overtime.

He’s a huge loss for the Jackets. He and Jones are one of the top pairings in the league and certainly one of the most underappreciated. Werenski had a wrist issue earlier in the series and there was no update on his injury on Saturday during Columbus’s media availability. He’ll go if he can and it seems clear that Columbus needs him, especially with how Matthews likes to come in the zone on the off-wing, which would be Werenski’s side.

It sure feels like Columbus had their chance and let it slip away. They have a goaltending controversy and a top-pair defenseman injured. They have gotten an excellent series from Pierre-Luc Dubois, but other guys have been missing in action. The Maple Leafs got a second life and have been the team to carry the play more often than not in the series.

It looks like Toronto will advance.

The 2017 tournament was a rather emotional one, as the Old White TPC flooded during the record storms in West Virginia and forced a cancellation of the 2016 event. This is a rather strong event two weeks before a major and there are a lot of compelling storylines. Four spots in The Open Championship at Carnoustie are up for grabs. Seven of the top 35 in the Official World Golf Ranking are on hand as well. This should be a good one.

Value Picks

Danny Lee ($8,800) – We’ll start a little on the high side of average with Danny Lee. As mentioned in our official tournament preview, Danny Lee is a good gamble to be the first round leader, as he’s shot 63, 64, and 65 over the last three tournaments. Lee won this event in 2015, as he outlasted David Hearn and Robert Streb in a three-way playoff. Lee has only made two of his last five cuts, but he does have top-15 finishes in those two events. He was ninth here last year following his 2015 win. He was also 16th back in 2014, so he’s really been a good horse for course play here. We tipped the winner in this article last year in the person of Xander Schauffele, so hopefully we can do the same this year with Lee or one of the others listed.

David Lingmerth ($7,200) – We often talk about situational spots in sports betting. Last year’s Greenbrier Classic was a bad one for Lingmerth. He entered play on Sunday with the lead at the Quicken Loans National, but shot his second consecutive 73 to let the win slip away. He opened with a 64 here in White Sulphur Springs, but it was all downhill from there. Lingmerth was sixth in 2015 and 16th in 2014 at the Greenbrier. This is a guy that was +2000 last year, is +7000 this year, and is very well-priced at $7,200. He was 20th two events ago at TPC River Highlands and played fairly well last week at the Quicken Loans National at 1-under. At this price point, we don’t need a lot, but he does have a high ceiling.

Robert Streb ($7,000) – You won’t find many guys with 16 missed cuts in 23 events priced anywhere close to this, but you do have to respect what Robert Streb has done at this course. Surely you’ve heard the term “horse for course”, well, that’s what Streb is with The Greenbrier’s Old White TPC track. Streb finished second to Xander Schauffele last year at 13-under. It was his second straight runner-up finish at this event. He lost in a four-way playoff to aforementioned Danny Lee, Kevin Kisner, and also David Hearn back in 2015. Streb shot par or better for all four rounds in 2013 and shot a mostly respectable 2-over in 2014. His final-round 73 prevented him from moving up the board on a tough day for scoring. At this price point, with his track record here, it’s hard to pass because he’ll allow you to roster top players like Tony Finau, Bubba Watson, and Schauffele.

David Hearn ($6,700) – Maybe David Hearn found something that worked for him last week at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. Hearn made his first cut since April 19 and finished 2-under. Hearn hasn’t exactly played badly between made cuts. He was 1-over at TPC Southwind, 5-over in Fort Worth, and 2-over at the new course, Trinity Forest, for the AT&amp;T Byron Nelson. He just hasn’t been good enough. Hearn, though, has been very good at Greenbrier. He finished 14th last year after that tough playoff loss in 2015. He also shot 6-under over his first 54 holes in 2014 before a final-round 76 that sent him plummeting down the board. For whatever reason, he just happens to like it here.

Kevin Kisner ($8,000) – Let’s go with somebody maybe a little bit safer to wrap things up with Kevin Kisner. Kisner really hasn’t done much since being the runner-up at the Dell Match Play to Bubba Watson. He’s missed three of his last five cuts and hasn’t had a top-50 finish since mid-April. He missed the cut here last year with a score of 2-over, but he was second back in 2015. It seems like Kisner is one of those guys who will lay low for a while and then all of the sudden put together a run that reminds you that he’s still around. Perhaps this is that week.

Tony Finau ($9,100) – Normally we like to go a little bit lower than this price tag, but Tony Finau might be the best player in the field without a spot in The Open Championship field. You can bet that he doesn’t want to be idle or playing in the Barbasol Championship in two weeks. Finau finished tied for 13th here two years ago at 10-under, just two shots back from a top-five finish. This is a 7,300-yard par 70, so guys with some length can have some success here. That 2015 performance is the only course data we have from Finau, but it’s a good starting point. He has made five straight cuts and has two top-20 finishes and four top-30 finishes in that span.

Xander Schauffele ($7,900) – Xander Schauffele has been coming on pretty strong of late. The 23-year-old San Diego native played well enough at Erin Hills to earn himself an exemption for next year’s US Open. He was fifth at Erin Hills and followed that up with a 14th at the Travelers. He finished 35th last week, but did go 70-68 over the weekend to slide up the board a little bit and earn a little more money for his efforts. Schauffele has made five straight cuts and seems to be gaining confidence each week. After getting into the US Open and securing an exemption for next season, you can bet he wants a crack at The Open Championship.

Gary Woodland ($7,500) – Gary Woodland already has a spot at Royal Birkdale in two weeks, but he wants to grab a victory here. He didn’t play this event in 2015 and finished 72nd in 2014 thanks to a final round 75. That fate was eerily reminiscent of his 2013 performance, when Woodland hit Sunday at 7-under and then shot a 77 to give it all back. The winning score that year was 13-under, so Woodland may not have taken down the tournament, but he went from a likely top-five to a 62nd. If he can avoid the Sunday landmine, he’ll be a good buy this week.

Braden Thornberry ($6,900) – We’ve seen some amateurs and recent college champions put together some great tournaments recently. Braden Thornberry was one of them. Thornberry’s $241,000 pay day at the FedEx St. Jude Classic had to be forfeited so he could keep his amateur status to play in college, but he opened some eyes with a seriously strong performance at TPC Southwind. Thornberry shot a 71-69-67-65 to finish fourth. He shined with the flatstick and starred as a scrambler since his driver was a little bit erratic. Old White TPC is tree-lined, but making putts is a big deal on this course, so Thornberry has a shot to make some noise.

Ted Potter ($7,200) – Some guys just have courses that work for them. We’re paying an inflated price on Ted Potter Jr. this week, but it’s probably what he deserves. Potter’s only PGA Tour event this season has been the US Open, which he gained entry to from winning a sectional qualifier. He missed the cut. Potter didn’t play this event in 2015, but he gains entry as a past champion back in 2012. He was 26th in 2014, sixth in 2013, and had a dramatic playoff win over Troy Kelly on Hole #75 in 2012. Potter shot 64-64 over the weekend to win. As far as course form and past results go, Potter is your guy.

There is no doubt about the weaponry A&amp;M possesses. What we question is whether they can get really fired up for this game. And we can tell you that if they are not focused, North Carolina has more than enough dynamite in its lineup to steamroll them. We actually feel comfortable taking the points in this one, as we see the Tar Heels being an offense that won't get slowed down much. And the OVER may not be a bad idea either.

Capital One Orange Bowl Odds, Pick, & Prediction: North Carolina vs. Texas A&M

The NHL Qualifying Round Series are complete and now the Stanley Cup Playoffs officially begin. While futures bets and the teams around the league graded the Qualifying Rounds as a playoff berth, the next set of games will technically be termed the “First Round”.

After best-of-five series in the Qualifying Round, the playoffs now return to being the usual seven-game series format. Obviously all of the games will be played in either Toronto or Edmonton, but each series will have the 2-2-1-1-1 format with the all-important last change going to the home squad.

The teams that were not fighting for their postseason lives were fighting for seeding in a Round Robin tournament, so they’ve been playing. They haven’t been playing with the same intensity and some teams did take the Round Robin games more seriously than others. They also only played three games and every team that advanced except for Carolina wound up playing at least four games. The only series to require a decisive fifth game was Columbus vs. Toronto, which was won by the Blue Jackets.

With that victory on Sunday night, the First Round was set in stone. The Philadelphia Flyers wound up being a surprise #1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Vegas Golden Knights also ran the table in the Western Conference, so they grabbed the #1 seed. The Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues went winless in Round Robin action. The Bruins looked like they’d rather be anywhere else. We’ll see if they can flip the switch as the First Round begins on Tuesday August 11.

As mentioned, the Flyers scored the #1 seed in the Eastern Conference, so they draw the #12 seed Montreal Canadiens. It is a little bit surprising to see Colorado lined above Vegas, given that the Golden Knights also draw the #12 seed in the Chicago Blackhawks. However, the Avalanche face the Arizona Coyotes, who have the longest odds of any team in the field.

Odds have changed a little bit since the 24-team playoff was announced. The Boston Bruins went 0-3 in Round Robin play and went from +650 or so to +900. The St. Louis Blues also went through the motions, but their odds have not changed a ton. Perception is such an interesting thing.

The Flyers went out and dominated Round Robin play and went from double digits to the Eastern Conference favorites. Certainly it helps that they face Montreal, but that was still a big switch in price. Washington’s uninspired performance in the Round Robin also moved the Capitals down.

The best opening round series on paper looks to be Boston and Carolina. The Capitals have an interesting series against former friend Barry Trotz, who led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup in franchise history just a couple of years ago.

Tampa Bay gets a crack at revenge against Columbus, which is also going to be a fun one. The Flyers are one of biggest favorites of the opening round and the favorite to win the conference because most people believe that is the only series that can’t go either way.

Finding a value play is tough here. The Bruins draw a tough first-round matchup because they screwed around with the Round Robin games, but this is a team that was as good as any during the regular season. They just put themselves in a tough predicament.

If I had to pick one, I’d say Tampa Bay at +350. The Blue Jackets were outplayed most of the series against Toronto, but Joonas Korpisalo and Elvis Merzlikins were excellent.

The Avs and Knights get top dog status here because they have the easiest of the Western Conference First Round matchups on paper, but it certainly does appear like the chances of a chalky First Round are much higher in this conference than the East. Colorado is now healthy and Vegas now has a better backstop in Robin Lehner, so those two teams are indeed deserving favorites.

Dallas actually drew a decent matchup against Calgary in all honesty. The Stars, who had some issues in the Round Robin and throughout the season scoring goals, have much stronger goaltending than the Flames. That could be the biggest difference in the series. While any team that advances to face either Vegas or Colorado will be a clear underdog in the Second Round, the +900 price on Dallas to carry over isn’t terrible.

It seems like a lot of people will pencil in Vegas and Colorado to advance to the next round and then be on a crash course in the conference final. Some will even put it in pen. It will probably happen that way, so if you want to pick between the two and take one at +250, that wouldn’t be a bad bet either. Both teams looked crisp in the Round Robin and will be clear favorites in the next round. St. Louis is a tougher matchup for Vegas than Dallas/Calgary for Colorado, so they get the slight nod. If Vancouver can get past the Blues, then the Golden Knights are sitting pretty, but that seems unlikely.
