One of the more unique events on the PGA Tour calendar goes off this week with the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana on the outskirts of New Orleans. This event switched to team play in 2016 as a way to try and increase interest and participation between the majors. With the PGA Championship coming quickly, a decent field is on hand this week and there are some dream teams that you can consider in your handicapping.

With the format of this event, we won’t have a DFS article this week. The cut line is 35 teams plus ties for this tournament. The field features 80 teams and 160 players. Winners get 400 FedEx Cup points each, but this tournament does not apply for Masters invitations or OWGR points.

Team odds are on the right-hand side for desktop viewers and below the comment box for mobile viewers as we head down to Avondale, Louisiana for a look at the only team event of the PGA Tour year.

<h5><strong>Format and Course</strong></h5>
TPC Louisiana winds through the wetlands down near the Bayou and is a long par 72 of over 7,400 yards. As you would expect, a lot of holes have water in play, but this has traditionally been one of the better courses for scoring of all the tracks on the PGA Tour docket. Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy won this last year at 22-under. Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith won in 2017 at 27-under. The lowest winning score with the old format dating back to 2010 was 15-under.

There are a lot of hazards on this course with bunkers and water, but this course has a lot of reachable par 5s and even a few drivable par 4s depending on wind and ground conditions. You can play aggressively on a lot of these holes, which is why there have been so many low scores.

Players will play fourball (better ball) for the first and third rounds and alternate shots for the second and fourth rounds.

<h5><strong>The Teams</strong></h5>
While golf’s absolute best aren’t on hand this week, who wouldn’t want to watch a pairing of Jason Day and Adam Scott or major winners Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel. Day and Scott are the favorites at +600, with Sergio Garcia and Tommy Fleetwood close by at +750.

Patrick Reed will play with Patrick Cantlay and that Patrick tandem is +1200. Bubba Watson and JB Holmes can both hit it a country mile and there are +1600, along with Jon Rahm and Ryan Palmer.

Guys like Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler, and Jordan Spieth are sitting this one out.

From a handicapping standpoint, you definitely want guys that can balance each other out, especially during the alternate shot rounds. When it comes to the fourball rounds, you know that the bombers will play their tee shots more frequently, so you really want to find a team that has good balance between a bomber and touch on the approach. The bombers can make up the length in the alternate rounds that their teammates may not have off of the tee.

Personalities matter a lot in this as well. Garcia and Fleetwood could be something of a powder keg, whereas Brooks Koepka and younger brother Chase Koepka should get along just fine. Henrik Stenson and Graeme McDowell are both veterans that know the ebbs and flows of this game.

There are also areas in which one player is just so much better than another. For example, Tony Finau badly outshines Kyle Stanley in every way possible. Stanley isn’t even in the top 200 in strokes gained putting to help on the greens. Because Finau is there, the odds are 20/1, but Stanley has the chance to really drag him down.

<h5><strong>The Picks</strong></h5>
We’re getting a great price and some good value on Cameron Champ and Sam Burns at 70/1. Champ heads into this event 11th in strokes gained off-the-tee. The guys may struggle a little bit on approach, but Burns is top 25 in strokes gained putting. Champ is 31st. This type of event is all about birdies and eagles, so you really want guys capable of knocking down their putts. That is essential. Neither Champ nor Burns played this event last year, but they should pair well together.

Jason Dufner has played very well here with his partners. In 2017 he played with Patton Kizzire and finished tied for fifth. Dufner is back with 2018 partner Pat Perez, with whom he finished second last year. Perez is second in strokes gained putting this year. They don’t rate that well collectively in other areas, but Dufner’s been around the leaderboard the two years that we’ve had this tournament format. They are 50/1.

Kizzire is actually with Brian Harman this time around. Kizzire is 195th in strokes gained off-the-tee. Harman is 54th. Harman is nearly at the bottom in strokes gained on approach. Kizzire is in the middle of the pack. Kizzire is also 10th in strokes gained putting, which is much better than Harman’s 88th. Kizzire balances out a lot of areas where Harman struggles and vice versa, so that’s a good pairing at 66/1.

Another team with a good shot in the 60/1 range is Scott Stallings and Trey Mullinax. Mullinax was among the final groups last weekend at Harbour Town. He hits the ball a long way and ranks 38th in SG: OTT. He’s 50th in SG: Approach, but Stallings is 29th. When both guys can hit a good second shot, that is an enormous benefit, especially for putting purposes with the fourball rounds. Neither Mullinax nor Stallings grade well in putting, but playing the better approach shot can make it a lot easier.

This is a fun tournament, so have some fun with it from a betting standpoint as well.

“The full regular season must be played.” We have no idea whether or not that will happen, but for those that are knee deep in preparations for the 2020 college football season, <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/betonline"><strong>BetOnline Sportsbook</strong></a> has released season win totals. Even if you are not ready to fire on them, you should have a really good frame of reference now for putting together your power ratings and your thoughts on the teams for the upcoming season.

By no means are these risk-free, given that there is always risk in gambling, but refunds will be given if the full schedule of the regular season is not played, so you don’t have to worry about getting boned on an over bet if the season starts late or doesn’t start at all.

Another good thing about the season win total odds at BetOnline is that all of them are half numbers, which means that you won’t have any pushes. Of course, some of the vig can be a little bit cost-prohibitive, as roughly 30 or 35 cents equals a half-win, so some of them may look more like 10 or 9 or some other flat number. Nevertheless, for those desperate for something to study in the time of coronavirus, you most certainly have it.

In all honesty, it would be a disservice to suggest any picks because I haven’t done enough college football research and haven’t put together my power ratings as of yet.

For those that have put together power ratings, come up with your projected spreads on each game and then turn the spread into an expected win probability.

So you would look at the schedule, come up with your spreads, convert to expected wins, add them all up, and that would be your baseline win total.

For example, if Team A plays 12 games and has these spreads:

Then the projected win total is 5.92 wins. If the win total is far enough from your number and the vig seems manageable, then you can fire on that bet on whichever side makes sense.

For a better example, for whatever reason, BetOnline has odds up on all of Syracuse’s games except for the FCS matchup against Colgate. Here are those games:

That would give Syracuse, based on those odds, an expected win total of 4.51 with the game against Colgate unlined. The Syracuse win total is at 5.5 with the over at -120. Based on these projected spreads, which could obviously change, Syracuse probably falls around 5.3 wins if you line the Colgate game in double digits.

Is that big enough to bet? Not in my humble opinion. But, if you trust your power ratings implicitly and feel like you have an edge, you can find teams that you’ll want to bet because of the vig or because you have a strong enough read.

As I get my college football power ratings done, I’ll have some season win total bets and some additional thoughts on the teams and the odds that are out there. For now, even if you don’t want to bet these numbers or don’t feel comfortable tying your money up, you have a great frame of reference for the power ratings process and for seeing if you are in line with the market based on your projected spreads and win total numbers.

College Football Season Win Total Odds and Betting Tips

<p>At 10:00 ET, the Dallas Mavericks (-183) will take on the Portland Trail Blazers (+154) in a Western Conference matchup. The Mavericks are favored by 4.5 points and have a record of 20-11, which is good for 4th in the West. The Trail Blazers are 13th in the West with a record of 10-20.</p>

<p>This game will be played at the Moda Center in Portland and can be seen on KATU.</p><h3>DALLAS MAVERICKS VS PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS BETTING PICK</h3><p>The Pick: Portland Trail Blazers +4.5</p><p>This game will be played at Moda Center at 10:00 ET on Saturday, December 28th.</p><h3>WHY BET THE PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS:</h3><ul><li>We have this one finishing with a projected score of 159-109 in favor of the Trail Blazers.</li><li>Our projections have Anfernee Simons finishing with 19 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists.</li><li>From the field, we have the Trail Blazers finishing with a field goal percentage of 45.8% and knocking down 16 threes.</li></ul><h3>Does Dallas Have a Shot at a Road Win?</h3><p>The Mavericks improved to 20-11 on the season with a 98-89 win over the Suns on Friday. Dallas, who entered the game as +1 point underdogs, covered the spread with the victory. The teams combined for 187 points, well below the O/U line of 224.</p> <p>Dallas took control in the 2nd quarter, outscoring Phoenix 27-14. The Suns tried to rally in the 3rd, cutting the lead to 72-64, but the Mavericks edged them 26-25 in the 4th to seal the win.</p><p>In their win over the Suns, the Mavericks managed just 98 points, shooting 43.8% from the field and hitting 12 threes at a 35.3% clip. Kyrie Irving led the way with 20 points, knocking down 5 threes at 50% efficiency, despite shooting 28.6% overall.</p> <p>Irving scored 12 of his points in the 1st quarter, while Daniel Gafford added 8 of his 16 in the 2nd and another 6 in the 4th. Spencer Dinwiddie and Maxi Kleber each contributed 15 points, with Kleber and Klay Thompson both scoring 6 points in the final period.</p><p>The Mavericks' defense was stellar on Friday, holding the Suns to just 89 points. Dallas was particularly strong in the 2nd quarter, allowing only 14 points. They gave up 25 points in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarters but still managed to keep Phoenix in check.</p> <p>Overall, the Suns shot just 38% from the field, including 37% from beyond the arc, where they made 13 threes. Dallas also sent Phoenix to the free-throw line 18 times, where they hit 12. The Mavericks finished with 6 steals and 5 blocked shots.</p><h3>Can the Trail Blazers Pull Out the Win as Home Underdogs?</h3><p>Portland improved to 10-20 on the season with a 122-120 win over the Jazz on Thursday. Playing at home, the Blazers were favored by 3.5 points but didn’t cover the spread. The game’s total score of 242 points exceeded the O/U line of 227 by 15 points.</p> <p>After a 16-0 run by the Jazz put them ahead 71-57, Portland rallied in the 4th quarter, outscoring Utah 41-32 to complete the comeback.</p><p>Shaedon Sharpe and Deni Avdija each scored 27 points in the Trail Blazers' 122-120 win over the Jazz, with Avdija adding 14 points in the 4th quarter. Sharpe hit 5 threes at a 50% rate, while Avdija also shot 50% from deep.</p> <p>Portland connected on 15 threes, shooting 39.5% from beyond the arc and 50.6% overall. Deandre Ayton and Scoot Henderson both added 18 points, with Ayton grabbing 12 rebounds.</p><p>Defensively, the Trail Blazers had a strong start, allowing just 23 points in the 1st quarter, but they struggled in the 3rd and 4th, giving up 34 and 32 points, respectively. Overall, they allowed 120 points on 47% shooting from the Jazz.</p> <p>Portland had trouble defending the three, as Utah hit 21 threes at a 50% clip. The Blazers sent the Jazz to the line 25 times, where they made 17 free throws. Portland finished with 10 steals and 8 blocks.</p>

Dallas Mavericks vs Portland Trail Blazers Betting Pick & Prediction 12/28/24

<p>From Coors Field in Denver, we have the Mets and Rockies facing off in an NL matchup. This one gets started at 8:40 PM ET, and the Rockies are looking to snap a two-game losing streak. However, they are heavy underdogs on the money line (+133), with the Mets being favored (-158). The over/under line is sitting at 11.5 runs.</p>

<p>Luis Severino will start for the Mets, and he will be facing off against Kyle Freeland. The Mets are 59-53 this season, which has them 3rd in the NL East, while the Rockies are 41-72 overall and 5th in the NL West. SNY will be televising this one.</p><h3>COLORADO ROCKIES VS NEW YORK METS BETTING PICK</h3><p>The Pick: Colorado Rockies Moneyline +133</p><p>This game will be played at Coors Field at 8:40 ET on Tuesday, August 6th.</p><h3>HOW TO BET THE METS VS ROCKIES:</h3><ul><li>We have the Rockies winning by a score of 6 to 5</li><li>If you're looking for a run line pick, we also like the Rockies to cover</li><li>As for an over/under pick, we have this game finishing with 11 runs and like the under</li></ul><h3>Mets Records & Stats</h3><p>To close out their series vs. the Cardinals, the Mets picked up a 6-0 win. Leading up to the game, they were the slight favorite at -109 on the money line. It was a big second inning that really turned things in their favor, and the Cardinals could only score one run, which came in the 2nd.</p>

<p>Sean Manaea put together a good start for the Mets, going seven innings and not giving up a run. He also issued just one walk and struck out 10 Cardinals batters. New York's offense was carried by Jeff McNeil, who went 2/4 with a homer and three RBIs.</p><p>The Mets are seven games behind the Phillies for the NL East lead heading into today's road matchup vs. the Rockies. Overall, the Mets are 59-53, and they are 20-16 in divisional games this year. New York will be looking to pick up a win today, as they are just 5-5 across their last 10 games.</p>

<p>At home, the Mets are 30-29 this season, and they have gone 29-24 on the road. As the favorite, the Mets are 36-30 this year and 23-23 as the underdog. New York has an overall series record of 18-14-7 coming into today's game, and they won their most recent series vs. the Cardinals.</p><p>When the Mets are on the road, they have a positive run differential of 0.5 runs per game. They have covered the run line in 29 of their 53 road games this season. They have been an underdog in 46 games and have covered the run line in 28 of those contests.</p><p>The Mets have played to an over/under record of 58-50 this season, but their games have averaged just 9.4 runs per game. The over/under line for today's game against the Rockies is set at 11.5 runs, which is well above their season average. In fact, 99.1% of their games this season have had lower over/under lines than 11.5 runs. The under has hit in their last two games.</p><p>The Mets are sending Luis Severino to the mound today, and he comes in with a record of 7-4 and an ERA of 3.93. So far, Severino has made 21 starts, and opponents are batting .226 this season. In his 21 appearances, he has turned in nine quality starts and is averaging 6.99 strikeouts per nine innings. Looking back at his last outing, Severino took the loss, giving up six earned runs in three innings of work. Before that, he had won two straight starts. The right-hander has been much better at home, with a 4.25 ERA compared to 4.49 on the road.</p><p>Heading into today's game, the Mets are one of the top home run hitting teams in the league, and they have been very good at scoring runs this season, averaging 4.8 runs per game. Overall, their team batting average is .249 (8th) and have the 7th best slugging percentage in the league. New York's offense is led by Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor, who have 23 and 22 home runs this season, respectively.</p>

<p>Over his last five games, Jeff McNeil has gone 6/14 with a home run and five runs scored. This has helped him move into the team's top spot in batting average at .232. Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor are the top two run producers for the Mets, with Lindor's 64 RBIs leading the team.</p><h3>Rockies Records & Stats</h3><p>The Rockies will be looking to get back on track after closing out their series vs. the Padres with a 10-2 loss. Colorado was the +191 underdog on the money line going into this matchup. <h3><b>The Matchup</b></h3>
<span style="font-weight: 400;">Anthony Davis was dominating the Heat through the first games of the series. He had 34 points and nine rebounds in the opener, and Davis posted 32 points along 14 boards in Game 2. However, he had a tough night on Sunday, taking just nine shots and finishing the clash with 15 points and five boards. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">LeBron James turned the ball over eight times after committing zero turnovers in Game 2, so the Lakers couldn’t expect to get anything from Sunday’s game. Markieff Morris and Kyle Kuzma combined for nine triples and 38 points off the bench, but that wasn’t enough against the resilient Heat. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Although they missed Bam Adebayo, the Heat somehow managed to deal with the Lakers on the defensive end. They will need more of the same in order to pull off another upset. </span>

That was another important factor in Miami’s victory, but the Heat continues to struggle on the glass. They allowed a whopping 27 offensive rebounds in the previous two games. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">I got burned on Sunday, predicting the Lakers’ third straight win in the finals. The Heat really surprised me with their terrific defense, while they executed offensively like there was no pressure on their shoulders. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite that performance, I expect the Lakers to gel the things and beat the Heat on Tuesday. However, I don’t feel comfortable with a 7.5-point spread. The Heat could easily keep it close, especially if Adebayo returns. </span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Still, I think the Lakers are experienced enough to avoid another loss, so I’m buying a couple of points and taking the Lakers as 5.5-point favorites. LA won eight of its last 10 matchups with Miami but covered just five times in the process. </span>
