One of the hardest things for baseball handicappers to handle is rookie pitchers, particularly those making one of their first starts in the major leagues. Many handicappers will simply pass on those games and wait until the pitcher has thrown a few games and wait to see how he performs. There’s nothing wrong with that theory and in theory, it’s probably one of the better ones out there.

Others will go against them in their MLB debut, using the assumption that they’re going to be nervous and won’t be at their best, which is also hard to disagree with. We’ve seen plenty of rookie pitchers this season struggle a bit in their first game before settling into a groove. Colorado’s German Marquez is a good example, as the highly touted rookie was on the losing end of a 15-12 game in his debut. Since then, the Rockies have allowed 11 runs in his next five starts.

One handicapper I know waits until their second start. If they threw well in their debut he backs them their next start and continues to do so until they have a poor outing. If they were roughed up in their debut he goes against them until they have a decent game. The logic is a pitcher doing well has confidence, which is key for a young player, while those struggling may begin to press and start thinking about being sent down to the minors.

Dealing with rookie starters is also difficult for statistical handicappers and I’ve struggled with how to handle them. Right now, I assign them a 6.00 for runs surrendered, which is the highest figure I’ll use, even if a starter allows more runs than that. Whether or not to use 5.00 as a starting point is something I’ll examine after this season, as I make some minor modifications to the system, but at a quick glance, that 6.00 may not be too far off, although there are always going to be exceptions.

A quick glance at all of the rookie pitchers used so far this year, shows a number who have allowed six or more runs in their first couple of games and many times it’s hard for them to work their way back. Too many managers would rather send a Jered Weaver to the mound, despite the fact the Padres allow almost eight runs a game with him on the hill, than give another start to Zach Lee, who was sent to the minors after 5.1 scoreless innings against the Rockies in his Padres debut.

All pitchers were rookies at one time and even Clayton Kershaw had to make a debut. And some very good pitchers struggled early on, such as Corey Kluber, who dropped his first six starts, while the Indians allowed fewer than seven runs in just one of them.

As a rule, hard-throwing rookies will fare better than off-speed rookies, as major league hitters are better at handling off-speed pitches than minor leaguers. But a hard-throwing rookie has a bit of an advantage over hitters who have never seen him before. Many of your better off-speed pitchers were one-time hard-throwers, who had to adjust due to arm troubles or finally learned how to pitch, as opposed to just throw the ball.

Rookie pitchers will always be a bit of mystery box and for every Chris Sale or Stephen Strasburg there are many more who we’ll see for a few games and that will be the extent of it. Don’t be afraid to go against struggling rookies, but remember, it can turn around for them very quickly and don’t be too slow to react.

Noah Clowney and Cameron Johnson each scored 19 points, with Clowney hitting 4 threes and Johnson adding 3.</p> <p>Keon Johnson contributed 15 points, and Tyrese Martin added 14, scoring 8 of those in the 3rd quarter. Clowney and Johnson both had strong 2nd quarters, with Clowney scoring 8 points and Johnson adding 7.</p><p>The Nets gave up 39 points in the 1st quarter but tightened up in the 2nd, allowing just 19. They allowed 25 points in the 3rd and 27 in the 4th, giving up 110 points in the loss.</p> <p>Brooklyn allowed Miami to shoot 49% from the field, including 41% from three, with the Heat hitting 17 threes. The Nets sent Miami to the line 24 times, where they made 21 free throws. Defensively, the Nets recorded 9 steals and 2 blocks.</p><h3>Can the Bucks Secure a Win at Home?</h3><p>The Bucks improved to 16-12 on the season with a 112-91 road win over the Bulls on Monday. Milwaukee, who entered the game as +2.5 point underdogs, not only won but covered the spread with a dominant +21 point margin.</p> <p>A 12-0 run early on helped the Bucks jump out to a 33-17 lead after the 1st quarter. Their overall field goal percentage was 46%.</p> <p>Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez each scored 21 points, with Middleton adding 10 in the 2nd quarter. Bobby Portis contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds, scoring 9 points in the 3rd quarter.</p><p>The Bucks put on a defensive clinic against the Bulls on Monday, holding them to just 91 points. Milwaukee started strong, allowing only 17 points in the 1st quarter and capped the game with a 19-point 4th quarter. Overall, the Bucks limited the Bulls to 40% shooting from the field.</p> <p>Milwaukee was particularly effective in defending the three-point line, where Chicago shot just 20%, making only 10 threes. The Bucks also sent the Bulls to the free-throw line 12 times, where they made 9. Milwaukee finished the game with 42 defensive rebounds, 7 steals, and 1 block.</p>

<p><strong>Royals couldn’t sweep the Athletics on the road</strong></p>



<p>The Kansas City Royals were on a positive run of three straight wins, including the opening two of a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics on the road. Still, the Royals failed to get on the scoreboard in a 4-0 loss and fell short of securing their first series sweep of the campaign. With a 23-42 record, they are batting the A’s at the bottom of the AL.</p>



<p>The Royals displayed one of the weakest offensive performances of the year, registering only four hits and leaving Brady Singer with no chance of avoiding his second loss of the season. Singer, who dropped to a 3-2 record, pitched for 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with 4 K and 0 BB. MJ Melendez was the only Royal in the mood on offense as he recorded a single and a double.</p>



<p>Kris Bubic (0-4) is still looking for the first win of the campaign in his 9th start. The 24-year-old southpaw has a disappointing 8.36 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, and 24/18 K/BB ratio in 28.0 innings. Bubic met the Angels once in 2021 and was dismantled over 4.0 innings, recording a bloated 13.50 ERA.</p>



<p><strong>Angels were perfect in the last two</strong></p>



<p>The Los Angeles Angels won four of a five-game series against the Seattle Mariners, but the last two victories were impressive. The Angels didn’t allow a single run in those two, their second back-to-back no-run wins of the year. They improved to a 33-36 record and even though they will be without third baseman Anthony Rendon (wrist) for the rest of the season, the Angeles will be fine. Los Angeles will spend the next nine games at home.</p>



<p>Mike Trout launched five home runs in this five-game series, and he opened the scoring in a 4-0 win over the Mariners with a two-run homer in the 4th. Kenny Rosenberg was handed the first start of his young career and he lasted for 4.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits with one strikeout and three walks. The bullpen was fantastic and kept the Mariners at bay, letting no hits for the remainder of the game.</p>



<p>Noah Syndergaard (4-5) is hoping to snap a three-game losing streak and has a good chance when he takes on the Royals on Monday. The 29-year-old right-hander currently has a 3.53 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 35/13 K/BB ratio in 51.0 innings. Syndergaard hasn’t met the Royals since 2019.</p>

Trout has a .352 batting average against the lefties, with four home runs and eight RBI in 54 at-bats.</p>



<p>Bubic is struggling this year, and I am backing the Angeles to feast on him in the opening game of the series. Syndergaard, on the other hand, allowed only four RBIs in 40 at-bats against Kansas City’s batters, and I believe he will dominate in this one.</p>
