Maybe a new place will help Rod Carey get a bowl win. The first-year Temple head coach is 0-6 in bowl games in his career. All of those losses came with the Northern Illinois Huskies, who were often punching above their weight class in December and January. Carey’s Owls take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in this year’s Military Bowl in Annapolis, Maryland.

Some of the line from down from UNC -6 to UNC -4 could be related to Temple’s proximity to Annapolis, which should lead to a pretty pro-Owls crowd, but the underdogs have a terrific defense and that is likely the primary factor. Temple finished the regular season tied for 14th in yards per play allowed on defense with 4.75. North Carolina, meanwhile, finished 60th with 5.54 yards per play allowed.

Temple played the 80th-ranked schedule and plays in the high-octane AAC, where a lot of teams are offense-first, offense-second, and defense-third, so you have to respect what the Owls were able to do on that side of the ball. They allowed 5.19 yards per play in conference and actually held the two Power Five conference teams that they played to 4.16 yards per play. Of course, those two Power Five teams were Maryland and a Georgia Tech team transitioning away from the triple-option.

These two teams don’t have a whole lot of similarities. North Carolina may have had trouble on defense, but not on offense. Even with a true freshman QB in Sam Howell, the Tar Heels finished the regular season tied for 23rd in yards per play with 6.37. They had 6.2 yards per play in conference action and even finished in November with 7.75 yards per play in games against NC State, Mercer, Pitt, and Virginia.

The Tar Heels made a surprising hire before the season by getting Mack Brown to be the face and the figurehead of the program. That’s not to say that the wily vet doesn’t have a lot to do with the day-to-day preparations of the team, but simply to say that he was brought in to be the closer with recruiting and stand up in front of the media. Offensive coordinator Phil Longo and defensive coordinator Jay Bateman are two highly-touted assistants and the Tar Heels should be set up for even more success next season.

The best performance of the season for UNC was actually a loss to Clemson, but that 21-20 defeat, in which UNC failed on a potential game-winning two-point conversion, showed the talent and potential of this Tar Heels bunch. Winning 15 extra practices by beating Mercer and NC State was huge for the future of the team and this is very clearly a team you want on your radar in the Coastal Division next season.

Howell made some freshman mistakes, as he took 36 sacks, but he also threw for 3,347 yards and 35 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. He is already sixth in program history in passing touchdowns with a game left in his TRUE freshman season. Per <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/ADavidHaleJoint/status/1204450188338900993">David Hale of ESPN on Twitter,</a></strong> Howell became one of 11 Power Five quarterbacks to post a 60% completion rate, throw for at least 35 TD with 10 or fewer interceptions, 3,300 yards, and have 8.5 yards per attempt through 12 games. Six won the Heisman and six start on Sundays in the NFL. Those guys are Joe Burrow, Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, Will Grier, Mason Rudolph, Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, and Robert Griffin III. Not too shabby.

Javonte Williams and Michael Carter stood out with 5.6 and 5.8 yards per carry, respectively, and barring a trip to the NFL Draft, both will be back. Former QB Chazz Surratt switched to linebacker and led the team in tackles. There is a lot of talent and a lot of returning talent in Chapel Hill that got better as the season went along.

Anthony Russo played well for Temple once the Owls decided on a full-time starter. He completed 58.6% of his passes with a 21/11 TD/INT ratio and only took 14 sacks. Re’Mahn Davis needs 100 yards to hit the century mark. His work picked up for a fairly pedestrian 4.1 yards per carry for Jager Gardner. The third-leading rusher was backup QB Todd Centeio.

I didn’t want to put the cart before the horse here, but my thoughts on the game could have come in the first paragraph. I disagree with this line move. My line is UNC -6.5 and I don’t understand why the number is moving down. Carey is a terrible bowl coach. The UNC coordinators are very strong. UNC is a more athletic team. After missing a bowl game each of the last two years, UNC is supremely motivated, too.

This is one of my favorite plays of the bowl season. The -4 is probably the stopping point, so those waiting on a 3.5 are unlikely to get it. I’d get in at -4 because there is a good chance it goes back up.

You know when you’re throwing darts and you need a double 20 to win? Invariably, you throw one just above the wire for zero points and then throw one just under the wire for 20 points. Then you have to come back up and aim for double 10 and do the same thing again. And then your friend wins the game?

That happened to us last week with the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300. There were only three logical choices to win – Christopher Bell, Cole Custer, and Tyler Reddick. Reddick was the pole sitter. Custer was the best regular season driver on 1.5-mile tracks. Bell won the race. Last week’s article suggested a unit on each Custer and Reddick with a profit no matter which guy won, but neither guy could get us there.

So, we now move on the Desert Diamond West Valley Casino 200 at ISM Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. Formerly known as Phoenix International Raceway, this one-mile loop just outside of the big city is the site of the final race of the Round of 8. The championship race awaits next week at Homestead-Miami.

We’ll break this one down with some analysis of the track, the drivers, and the playoff picture, with odds on the right-hand side for desktop viewers and down below the comment box for mobile viewers.

<h5><strong>Last Chance Saloon</strong></h5>
Chase Briscoe, Michael Annett, Austin Cindric, and Noah Gragson are in win or go home mode. There is a small chance that Briscoe can catch Justin Allgaier without a win, but the 18-point gap between the two drivers looms rather large, considering Allgaier has not finished lower than ninth since the second race at Daytona on July 5. Allgaier has four top-five finishes in five playoff races.

Cindric would appear to have the best shot. He’s been second, third, third, 25th, and third in his five playoff races thus far. Maybe Briscoe has a good shot, considering he’s won a stage and led the most laps twice through five playoff events. We can safely close the book on Gragson and Annett.

Briscoe is +1320 and Cindric is +1920. Considering how big these prices are, a little Hot N Fresh pizza money on the two long shots isn’t a bad idea. After all, they’ll need to drive very aggressively. It may be in the best interest of guys like Bell, Custer, and Reddick to stay out of the way at times and not get their cars banged up going into next weekend.

<h5><strong>Jingle Bell</strong></h5>
Bell won this race last year, but after finishing 37th at Kansas and 32nd at Texas, the stakes were a little higher. This season, he is the points leader. The points reset at Homestead-Miami anyway and the highest finish among the four drivers will get the championship, so he doesn’t have as much to vie for this time around. He was 30th in the race at Phoenix earlier this year, but he did win Stage 2.

The winner in the spring was Kyle Busch, who has 11 wins at this level at Phoenix. At least he’s not in the race this weekend. Reddick was third and Custer was fourth. Those two guys are lined at +330 this week, with Bell the clear-cut favorite at +130.

Bell was the only one of the three to post a top-five finish last spring at ISM. In the fall race, Bell won and Daniel Hemric was second. Custer was eighth and Reddick was sixth. Shorter and intermediate tracks have been the strong suits for Bell this season. He’s got wins at Bristol, Dover, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Richmond. His Texas win was just his second on a 1.5-mile track.

Adding more fuel to the Cindric fire, he was fourth in this race last year as a rookie.

<h5><strong>Justin Time</strong></h5>
Or this could be the week for Justin Allgaier. Allgaier won three stages at Phoenix last year, but couldn’t get the overall race win. He was second with the most laps led and the pole in the spring race. In the fall race, he won stages 1 and 2, but finished 24th. Earlier this year, he was 14th and never really threatened.

Allgaier still doesn’t have a win this season, but he has 15 top-five finishes and seven stage wins. He’s getting closer. He could use the win to add an exclamation point to his spot in the final four, but it would only be necessary to win if one of the four drivers below him pulls the upset and keeps him out of the playoffs.

Allgaier will have some controlled aggression this week. Barring a win for the four drivers below him, he basically just needs some reasonable number of points to advance. However, he may want to go for that win and remove all doubt. He’s +1190 this week.

<h5><strong>Picks</strong></h5>
Look, one of Bell, Custer, and Reddick probably wins this race. They’re just the best on the circuit right now. Bell is the best short and intermediate driver, so he is a deserving favorite and could very well repeat in this race.

But, I think this is a week for throwing some of those aforementioned darts in hopes of hitting a bullseye. Allgaier, Briscoe, and Cindric are all live because of what is at stake. These are small investments, say maybe a quarter or a half unit to get a nice pay day. That would be the approach that I would take this week. Reddick and Custer each have one win at a one-mile distance, so they can win, but this is a race to take some chances, much like the drivers will. Allgaier was the favorite here last year and now we're getting +1190. That is some good value.

They connected on 42.1% of their three-point attempts, hitting 16 threes, and their effective field goal percentage was an impressive 65.1%. The Commodores also dished out 23 assists in the win.</p> <p>Inside the arc, Vanderbilt shot 68%, with Shannon Grant contributing 16 points and 10 rebounds. That means that you have to dig for this one, which features the top 60 in the FedEx Cup points list that wanted to play, the top 10 from the Asian Tour, and eight sponsor exemptions.

It’s easy to take Justin Thomas and Ryan Moore this week, but we’re looking for value options. That’s what we’ll be doing all season long on the golf side.

<strong>Cameron Smith ($8,400) – </strong>Cameron Smith comes in right around the average salary for the six-man roster in DraftKings. Smith is a good candidate this week. He was fifth last year and also fifth back in 2014 at TPC Kuala Lumpur. He played very well in the CJ Cup last year with a third-place finish. He likes these early events and played quite well at times last season, including thirds in the Northern Trust and also the Dell Technologies Championship. He made it all the way to the Tour Championship, where he finished 20th out of the 30 players left standing. This is a guy that finished fifth in the WGC-Dell Match Play and fifth at the Masters last year, so he can play.

<strong>Danny Lee ($8,100) – </strong>Danny Lee had a solid showing at the Safeway Open last wee. He was 10th and only had seven bogies while toting around the course at Silverado. The nice thing about this event is that TPC Kuala Lumpur is that it is a short course for a par 72, which helps somebody like Lee, who wasn’t a big hitter last year. That being said, he was sixth in driving distance last week at Silverado, so he turned it up a little bit and actually putted really well. Lee was seventh last year in Malaysia and five of his last eight rounds here have been under 70 after some tough early rounds. Hopefully last week’s strong effort gives him some confidence this week.

<strong>Beau Hossler ($7,800) – </strong>It’s a bounce back week for Beau Hossler. He was tipped in a few places last week by some respected golf minds, but he fell short of the cut. He was 2-under, but a 73 on Friday was the kiss of death, as he had a triple bogey on his card to go along with 10 birds and five bogies. Hossler hasn’t played this event before, so this will be some uncharted territory for him, but he played well to start last season with a 10th at the Sanderson Farms and a seventh at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Maybe getting away from the States and seeing something new will provide a boost.

<strong>Kevin Na ($8,600) – </strong>Kevin Na bypassed last week’s Safeway Open, so he’ll open up his 2018-19 season with the CIMB Classic this week. Na has played well here in the past, as he racked up consecutive top-five finishes back in 2014 and 2015. This is a short course, which helps a guy like Na, whose best asset on the course is with the putter. Na can get really hot with the putter and making putts is important on courses like this where everybody is racking up GIRs. He’s kind of a high-risk player this price tag, but it’s worth it if he’s got his rhythm on the dance floor.

<strong>Anirban Lahiri ($6,900) – </strong>Maybe things happen for a reason. Andrew Landry backed out of the CIMB Classic this week, which opened the door for Anirban Lahiri. Lahiri was 10th last year at 13-under with one of the lowest rounds on Saturday when he fired a 64. He finished third in 2016 at 19-under, just four shots off of Justin Thomas’s pace. Lahiri was a respectable 21st in 2015. He’s not in very good form, but this is a course that he has tamed in the past and he was gifted a chance to jump into this field, which could lift his spirits some despite the recent struggles.
