On the ground, Baylor's defense was more effective, holding Colorado to just 92 rushing yards, but they did surrender three rushing touchdowns.</p>

As a general rule, there are way too many names listed on the board for the Cy Young Award. National League voters have been a little more lenient than American League voters. As far as the AL Cy Young Award goes, every pitcher since 1994 has had either 20 wins or 200 strikeouts and a few guys have had both.

Remember, though, that 1994 was a strike year and that went to David Cone with a 16-5 record, a 2.94 ERA, and 132 K in 171.2 innings of work. Prior to that, you have to go back to 1992 when Dennis Eckersley won and then in 1984 when reliever Willie Hernandez won.

In other words, winning the award in the American League is very hard. You have strict criteria that you have to meet. Let’s look at the odds and then narrow the field down.

There were 24 pitchers that had at least 200 strikeouts last season. Only 10 were in the American League. They were Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander, Shane Bieber, Lance Lynn, Charlie Morton, Matthew Boyd, Lucas Giolito, Chris Sale, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Mike Minor.

There are two pitchers, Mike Clevinger and Tyler Glasnow, that would have been on a 200-strikeout pace had they stayed healthy. Trevor Bauer also would have been, had he stayed with the Indians for the entire season.

In this era of strikeouts, only Rick Porcello (22 wins) in 2016 and Cliff Lee (22 wins) in 2008 have failed to get 200 strikeouts and win the Cy Young dating back to 2006. It is almost a prerequisite to winning the award. If not, you have to be on a really good team with the opportunity to get wins. Lee was the lone exception with the wins because the 2008 Indians were bad.

That narrows down the list a lot for us. We need guys that have 200-strikeout upside. If a guy like Jesus Luzardo at 225/1 or Frankie Montas at 100/1 could stay healthy enough to throw 170ish innings, they’d have a chance. Luzardo at 225/1 is about the only really big balloon number I would consider, but it would be a tall task to work that many innings.

Because of that, quite frankly, we’re left looking at a lot of short prices. A guy like Michael Kopech at 80/1 has the strikeout upside, but he is coming off of Tommy John and will likely be limited. Same with Lance McCullers Jr.

The longest price on the board with a shot at 200 K is Eduardo Rodriguez at 50/1, but it seems unlikely that he will have the wins or the ERA, since that is still an important stat in the minds of voters.

Enough beating around the bush, eh? Here are three Cy Young Award candidates to consider:

<strong>Charlie Morton (+2500) – </strong>Charlie Morton had everything you wanted in a Cy Young candidate last season. He struck out 240 in 194.2 innings. He had 16 wins and an ERA of 3.05. He also allowed the fewest home runs of any pitcher with at least 150 innings pitched. He was really special. The obvious worry here is for a setback in his age-36 season, but Morton had a 2.32 ERA with 142 K in 112.2 innings in the first half. A 68% LOB% in the second half hurt his ERA. His K% did fall to 28.8%, which still classifies as elite, but he got unlucky with runners on base.

Morton has the bullpen to get the wins. He has the team to get the wins. He has the strikeout upside. He could also have a pretty good story if he decides that this is his last season and looks to retire after the year. The voters may give him a nod as a result.

<strong>Mike Clevinger (+1600) – </strong>Mike Clevinger is going to miss a few starts in April and that is the concern. In all honesty, once we get a clearer picture of how much time he will miss, there is a good chance that his price goes up into the 25/1 range. At the very least, you’ll probably be able to find a better number than this.

When Blake Snell won the Cy Young Award in 2018, he only pitched 180.2 innings, so it can be done. Clevinger would need over 200 strikeouts, a good record, and probably a very good ERA. Snell’s ERA was 1.89. Clevinger had a 2.71 ERA over his 126 innings last season with 169 strikeouts. He actually struggled immediately following his return from the injured list. He allowed 12 runs in 6.1 innings.

From July 3 through the end of the season, Clevinger had a 2.17 ERA with 138 K in 107.2 innings of work. If we take away his last start, Clevinger allowed 20 runs in 16 starts from July 3 to September 24. There is a path for him to win the Cy Young, assuming he doesn’t miss too much time in April.

<strong>Chris Sale (+500) – </strong>In all honesty, this is Gerrit Cole’s award to lose. I don’t know if the Red Sox are going to be good enough or if Chris Sale is going to be healthy enough, but Sale will have the numbers. He only pitched 147.1 innings and struck out 218 batters. Sale should have won the award in 2017 with 308 strikeouts, but for some reason, he didn’t.

Sale was hurt by three things last season. Actual injury. Sequencing luck. Home runs. Sale was limited to 25 starts. He had a 66.7% LOB% that drove his ERA up to 4.40, despite a 3.39 FIP. His xFIP was 2.93. His HR/FB% ballooned to 19.5%. He was never really right last season.

I wouldn’t bet Sale at 5/1, but if you find a higher price in the 8/1 or 9/1 range, he’s worth it. He has a chance to really bounce back with a vengeance. I don’t know if he’ll have the wins on a mediocre Red Sox team, but he’s going to have the strikeouts and should have the ERA and FIP.

I have much better long shot options in the National League.

Current F1 points leader Lewis Hamilton is sitting at -120 to win the race and after last year’s debacle, you can be sure that Hamilton will be looking to make amends. After dominating the field in 2017, Hamilton was the clear favorite last year and took the pole.

A slow start saw Hamilton drop back to third and then he was taken out by Kimi Räikkönen, falling to the back of the field. Hamilton charged back to second place, but finished 2.264 seconds behind at the checkered flag.

Hamilton and Mercedes are the class of Formula One this season and he’s won six of the nine races, while teammate Valterri Bottas has won twice. Red Bull Racing Honda was able to put an end to the Mercedes stranglehold in Victory Lane last time out in Austria, where Hamilton finished a disappointing fifth, the only time he’s not been in the top two all season.

But if there’s one race Hamilton would like to win each year, it’s likely the one race held in the United Kingdom, where he was born, although he currently lives in Monaco and owns several homes in the United States.

Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix five times, winning in 2008 and then seeing a lapse of several years before returning to the top step of the podium, but had wins in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 before last year’s disappointment.

Not surprisingly, Bottas is No. 2 in the odds and he’s in second place in the season standings, while Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel are the only other two drivers at less than 10-to-1 odds. Max Verstappen, who won is Austria, is 10-to-1, followed by Pierre Gasley at 30-to-1 and each of the other drivers are 100-to-1 or greater.

By no means is Hamilton guaranteed to win the race, but at -120 offers a bit of value and should probably be closer to -200 based on winning four of the last five British Grand Prix races and six of the nine Formula One races. Add in a bit of incentive to do well in the UK, and it’s probably a decent wager.

The Boston Bruins looked like they could not have cared less about the Round Robin tournament for seeding. As a result, they draw arguably the most dangerous of the Qualifying Round teams in the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes swept a trendy upset pick in the New York Rangers right out of the playoffs in short order.

This might be the most interesting handicap of the first round. Do we let these three recent games we saw overshadow how great Boston was in the regular season? They were 44-14-12 and the only team to reach 100 points. They felt slighted by having to play these games for seeding when they were eight points clear of anybody else in the Eastern Conference.

Can they flip that switch? Do we get the Bruins from October through February in the month of August? Or do the Hurricanes, a team that wasted no time getting into mid-season form, advance to the second round?

The Hurricanes won their series so fast that they actually will have a week off between games. A week in the bubble with nothing to really do except practice, lounge by the pool, and golf may have taken some of the edge away from their game. It might put them on more equal footing with the Bruins.

One of the major talking points of the first round is how much playing those games for your postseason lives carries over and how much of going through the motions in the Round Robin carries over. I guess we’ll see on Tuesday night.

Also, that Saturday start time is quite an interesting one, eh?

The tight-knit Hurricanes outscored the Rangers 11-4 in the Qualifying Round. Carolina scored eight goals at 5-v-5 to New York’s two and controlled the play. It wasn’t as big of a mismatch on the stat sheet as everything would suggest, but Carolina did have 10 more high-danger scoring chances than the Rangers. The scoring chances were actually fairly even, with Carolina holding a 66-63 edge, but 30 of Carolina’s scoring chances were graded high-danger.

Only 20 were for the Rangers and that was the big difference. Carolina got the higher-quality looks and took advantage. Some will point to the play of Henrik Lundqvist as the difference in the series when Igor Shesterkin was deemed unfit to play in Game 1 and Game 2, but Lundqvist, who was not good during the regular season, wasn’t the only problem. He was actually a small problem compared to New York’s lack of finish and poor power play efforts.

The main focus in this series should be Carolina’s smaller margin for error. The Rangers were a deeply-flawed team that became a hot commodity because of how Shesterkin played just before everything shut down. There have also been questions for Carolina with James Reimer and Petr Mrazek. Mrazek was -5.35 goals saved above average during the regular season with just a .905 SV%. He wound up playing well in Game 1 and Game 2.

It was a bit surprising that head coach Rod Brind’Amour went to Reimer in Game 3 when Mrazek had been so good, but Reimer stopped 37 of 38 shots and looked sharp. Brind’Amour has yet to name a Game 1 starter for this series. The smart money is probably on Mrazek, since he got the first nod in the Qualifying Round, but Reimer played better during the regular season.
<h3><strong><u>Boston</u></strong><strong><u> Bruins</u></strong></h3>
You’ve heard it ad nauseam in the betting world. Do not overreact to what you’ve most recently seen. If you were grading the Boston Bruins based on their Round Robin play, you would say that they don’t even deserve to be a playoff team. They scored four goals 5-v-5 and allowed eight. That was a huge departure from the regular season when they were +36 in 5-v-5 scoring. They weren’t the most prolific 5-v-5 offense, as they tied for 16th in goals for, but they allowed the fewest 5-v-5 goals in the league.

Only Minnesota allowed fewer high-danger scoring chances 5-v-5. Only Montreal and Vegas had more high-danger scoring chances 5-v-5 than Carolina. Boston’s power play was second in goals scored with 57, 10 more than Carolina.

Nothing that happened in the Round Robin, where the Bruins power play went scoreless, should creep into your handicap about this series. There is a case to be made that the Bruins may start slowly against a team that hit the ground running, but Boston was maybe the best team in the NHL during the regular season.

Tuukka Rask was one of the league’s top goaltenders during the regular season with a .929 SV% and a 2.12 GAA. He posted a 22.51 goals saved above average mark, which was among the best in the league. He played fine in the Round Robin, but the Bruins were moving guys in and out of the lineup and tried to figure out some different things with line combinations and whatnot. They had absolutely no interest in those games and Rask still played well and didn’t face a whole lot of high-percentage shots.
<h3><strong><u>Series Prediction</u></strong></h3>
Boston in 7.

The Bruins barely cared in the Round Robin and still had more scoring chances than the opposition. They had more high-danger scoring chances. They went through the motions in every way, shape, and form. Rask got to make some saves and some guys got to knock off some rust.

Rask could very well be the big difference in this series. He’s a better goaltender than either option for the Hurricanes. Boston’s suffocating defense at 5-v-5 against the high-danger scoring chances of the Hurricanes is another focal point. Boston did have 125 fewer high-danger chances than Carolina at 5-v-5. Boston still scored more goals. They also had the second-best PP% in the league.

Carolina will give Boston a series. The Bruins may have screwed up by not taking the Round Robin seriously at all. Rask and the defense will be the difference, but it could take a while to get there.
