<h3><strong><u>Format</u></strong></h3>
As mentioned, players are given a starting score based on their standings. Johnson is the best at 10-under. Cameron Smith, Viktor Hovland, Mackenzie Hughes, Cameron Champ, and Billy Horschel all start at even par. That means that they are already trailing by 10 shots by the time they hit the first tee.

Marc Leishman, Kevin Na, Ryan Palmer, Abraham Ancer, and Kevin Kisner are all 1-under. Tony Finau, Tyrrell Hatton, Joaquin Niemann, Scottie Scheffler, and Lanto Griffin start at 2-under. Sebastian Munoz, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Reed, Rory McIlroy, and Brendon Todd all start at 3-under.

Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, and Daniel Berger start at 4-under. Collin Morikawa is at 5-under, Webb Simpson is at 6-under, and the aforementioned trio of Thomas, Rahm, and DJ are 7-under, 8-under, and 10-under, respectively.
<h3><strong><u>Course</u></strong></h3>
East Lake Golf Club is another bomber’s course. After how hard Medinah played last week for the BMW Championship, I have to think that this week’s course plays a little friendlier with the playoff title on the line. East Lake checks in as a par 70 over 7,300 yards. We only had two par 5s last week at Medinah and the winning score was 4-under from Rahm after his playoff victory against DJ.

Rory McIlroy won last year. He was 5-under going into the tournament and played to 13-under over his 72 holes. He won by four shots over Xander Schauffele.

Approach shots will be a big deal here. Players that put themselves in bad spots around the green are going to have trouble and there are a lot of players that will be trying to make up strokes from the start. There are a lot of greenside hazards and chances to get short-sided on this course. That requires precision on approach. Power off the tee certainly helps so guys can swing short irons and wedges into the greens instead of longer irons that may not land as softly on what will likely be some hard greens.

<h3><strong><u>Yay or Neigh?</u></strong></h3>
Matchups are the best way to bet this tournament. Picking a winner means handicapping with those head start scores and that is a challenging thing to do. You’ll want to look for guys that either fit the course profile or have had some success here before and play them in matchups and 3-balls.

The current scoring format was new for last season, so the past finishes here are true outside of 2019. In 2019, you have to parse out the head starts that these guys received.

Hideki Matsuyama has played really well here with three top-10 finishes in his last four tries. Matsuyama is not a great putter, as we all know, but bomber’s courses are right up his alley. He was fourth in 2018 and fifth in 2016 with the old format, when this was just a regular golf tournament.

Xander Schauffele was the winner here back in 2017 and the runner-up last year. He really likes this course and seems to play well here. Rory is a two-time winner, including last year. Billy Horschel actually won this event back in 2014, but that was before the scoring change.

Justin Thomas has four top-seven finishes in his East Lake starts and would be the only player outside of the top two that I would look at to win this game. JT is 7-under to start the round and plays exceptionally well here. He has not been in good form recently, but he’s a guy that can flip the switch and win every week.
<h3><strong><u>Stats Handicap</u></strong></h3>
This is tough, but we’ll do the best we can here. Rory rolled over the field in SG: Off-the-Tee in this tournament last year. The only guys close to him in SG: Tee-to-Green were Schauffele and Chez Reavie. Paul Casey was a distant fourth.

Last week, Joaquin Niemann was first in SG: T2G and did really well on approach with the irons. Matsuyama was second and actually putted well, though he scrambled extremely well to give himself a chance at making more putts. DJ was third in SG: T2G.

Nobody drove the ball exceedingly well, but Jason Kokrak led the field in SG: OTT. He was tied for sixth, even though he shot even par. Kokrak is a guy that can put it out there and is definitely worth a look in matchups at this event.

DJ was flag hunting last week on approach again, as he led the field in SG: Approach. Danny Lee was second, but he couldn’t make a putt to save his life. Joaquin Niemann was third in SG: Approach. A lot of top players had an off week in SG: Approach. We’ll see if they can do better this week.
<h3><strong><u>Picks</u></strong></h3>
Dustin Johnson doesn’t play overly well at East Lake, so he could be a vulnerable favorite, though his approach shots over the last three events have been splendid. Justin Thomas is about the longest long shot I’d look at over DJ or Rahm and he’s not even that big of a price.

Matchups are the way to look, though, and guys like Kokrak and Schauffele are fine looks this week, as Kokrak can drive the ball well and Schauffele simply plays extremely well here.

2020 TOUR Championship Golf Betting Odds & Picks

Betting run totals can be extremely profitable throughout the long season. There are several angles that should be investigated before each bet.

A more casual bettor might want to bet the under in a game, but before he can get his bet in, that total has already dropped .5 to 1. A more experienced will look for edges in the five inning lines, team totals, or even fade some of the hitters with player props. My preference is to always look at the five inning totals. Situations that affect baseball totals include the winning home teams not batting in the bottom of the ninth, how rested the bullpens are, and which players are in the lineup.

The first baseball situation affecting the total I always think about is the home team not batting in the bottom of the ninth if they are leading. It might not have seemed like much at the time, but if you were playing the over in the Houston Astros home games last year, missing that last half inning of at bats was a big deal. The Astros averaged 5.41 runs per game. That puts them at .6 runs per 3 outs. If the Astros’ offensive output is close to what they did in last year’s championship run, it will be tempting to play overs. If they are at home, a bettor needs to make sure that .6 of a run is factored in to their decision, even more so this year with the Astros deepened starting pitching rotation.

The second situation I always monitor before playing a baseball run total is the availability of key bullpen pitchers can offer a significant edge over the long season. Late inning relievers will need to rest. I will be playing the over in situations where a team is missing a shutdown closer and having one of their weaker starting pitchers on the mound.

If the starter gives up more than three runs, a bet on the over can be in a great spot to benefit from the absence of bullpen pitchers. In certain situations betting on the opponent’s run total offers angles to capitalize on these bullpens. A team’s bullpen may be missing two arms due to injury and their setup man pitched in the three previous games. Even if a capable starting pitcher is on the mound the bullpen could fall apart. Using edges gained from knowledge of bullpens can help a bettor back out of bad spots and buy into teams facing a below strength bullpen.

The third edge I use when betting on baseball totals is checking the five inning lines and player props for better value than what is being offered on the full game run total. Playing on five inning lines and player props is another way to leverage bullpen situations. Look to back hot hitters who will get multiple at bats against below full strength bullpens. You can avoid these bullpen situations if you want to bet on the team’s starter by betting on the five inning totals.

Lastly, one of my favorite methods for making money with baseball totals is researching the expected lineups is a great way to further supplement the previously mentioned run total strategies. If there are bullpen pitchers unavailable it does not matter as much if Bryce Harper is out of the lineup. Fading these bullpens by betting on the over is less likely to cash. Researching the lineup participants and the team’s recent offensive performance is absolutely necessary before betting totals.

All season long I will be tracking good run total situations. Knowing the weak bullpens facing full strength lineups performing at a high level is a great time to be taking the over. However, if the hot lineup is at home there is a chance you lose a full three outs. While this should not be the ultimate deciding factor, it needs to be taken in to account. Over the long run, there is too much value to ignore the runs that are being lost without those three outs. Checking bullpen availability and expected lineups is necessary for gaining edges in run totals bets.

Important Edges for Betting Baseball Totals and Player Props

So far this season, they are just 17-24 in AL East matchups. Toronto is looking to bounce back after dropping their most recent game vs. the Reds.</p>
