<p>One of the most interesting horse races in the U.S. this weekend will take place at Keeneland, as a star-studded field of runners will line up in the Makers’ Mark Mile Stakes. This race will cover a distance of a mile, and it is one of the standout races to be staged across the opening weeks of the Spring Meeting at Keeneland.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-race-information-amp-records">Race Information &amp; Records</h2>



<p>The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maker%27s_Mark_Mile_Stakes" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes</a> has been staged annually since 1989, with the race previously known as the Fort Harrod Stakes. It is run on the turf, with a purse of $600,000 available to winning connections. It has been a Grade One affair since 2008, with a number of winners throughout history later landing massive prizes. Opening Verse won the 1991 edition of the race, before later claiming the Breeders’ Cup Mile.</p>



<p>Meanwhile, Artie Schiller and Miesque’s Approval also achieved the feat. Miss Temple City is the only mare to have won the race. Chez Pierre showcased the international prestige of this race 12 months ago when winning in a speed record time for trainer Arnaud Delacour.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-leading-contenders">Leading Contenders</h2>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-master-of-the-seas">Master Of The Seas</h3>



<p>There could be further international success in the race this year, with Charlie Appleby’s Master of the Seas likely to be a very short price favorite. William Buick travels over to take the ride on the Godolphin runner.</p>



<p>He was sensational at the end of last season to land the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, and he has plenty of international experience already in the book, which includes a second in the G1 Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland last year. Has the right profile to dominate this field, and connections will be hopeful of a very bold showing.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-du-jour">Du Jour</h3>



<p>Du Jour is a runner from the Bob Baffert yard that will line up in the Maker’s Mark Mile this weekend. This five-year-old returned to action with a very impressive display last month, landing the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes with a speed rating of 115.</p>



<p>That performance certainly puts him in the frame in this company. However, he does have form to find on Master of the Seas after finishing well behind his reappearing rival when tenth in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile last November. But, he could have a fitness edge this weekend.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-emmanuel">Emmanuel</h3>



<p>Emmanuel is another hope for the home team this weekend, with Irad Ortiz taking the ride on the Todd Pletcher-trained runner.</p>



<p>It was hard not to have been impressed by his return to the track last month, as he breezed clear of the field to land the G3 Canadian Turf Stakes with a speed figure of 115 at Gulfstream Park. That was a fourth victory in Grade Three company, but he is yet to make a breakthrough at the top level.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-maker-s-mark-mile-stakes-prediction">Maker’s Mark Mile Stakes Prediction</h2>



<p>If returning at the same level as last season, Master of the Seas is very much the runner to beat this weekend. However, a chance could be taken on Appleby’s Naval Power, who could be the team’s Breeders’ Cup contender this year.</p>



<p>The four-year-old has already won this season after scoring in Meydan, while he has suffered just one defeat in seven career starts, and there was no shame in that loss in the G1 Dewhurst at the start of October 2022.</p>

<p>The Kansas City Royals meet the Chicago White Sox for the second straight week, so we’re taking a closer look at Tuesday’s opening clash of this American League Central three-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago with the first pitch at 8:10 PM ET.</p>



<p>Last week, the Royals upset the ChiSox at home, winning a four-game set as huge underdogs, 3-1, but Chicago is 7-6 against Kansas City in 2021. The White Sox are listed as firm -180 favorites to win the opener Tuesday, while the Royals are +166 road dogs with a total of 9.5 runs on <a href="https://www.bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/mybookie/"><strong>MyBookie Sportsbook</strong></a>. </p>



<h2><strong>The Royals got swept in Canada&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The Kansas City Royals are coming off a rough road trip to Canada, as they got swept by the Toronto Blue Jays in a three-game set at Rogers Centre (6-4, 4-0, and 5-1). The Royals’ pitching staff is doing a great job in the second half of the season, but the Blue Jays’ loaded offense was just too much.</p>



<p>Kansas City has registered the eighth-lowest ERA in the majors since July 16 (3.79) to go with the fourth-best WHIP (1.14) and the sixth-best opponent batting average (.221). The Royals have won nine of their 15 games in that span, scoring 64 runs on a .239/.296/.411 slash line.</p>

<p>Kris Bubic will get the starting nod Tuesday in Chicago, and the 23-year-old southpaw has already met the ChiSox twice this season. He got a no-decision on both occasions, allowing just a couple of earned runs on six hits and four walks through 11.2 frames of work.</p>



<p>Bubic is 3-4 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in ten starts and eight relief apps this term. He’s posted a 4.78 ERA in five outings in July (26.1 frames pitched).</p>



<h2><strong>The White Sox look to break out of their slump&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></h2>



<p>The 62-44 Chicago White Sox are cruising through the AL Central, nine games ahead of Cleveland and 12 ahead of Detroit, while the Royals trail 16 games behind the ChiSox. However, the AL Central leaders have dropped seven of their last 11 games overall while posting the fifth-worst OPS in the majors since the All-Star (.691).</p>



<p>Chicago is batting only .213 in its last 17 games, scoring 67 runs in the process. On the other side of the ball, the White Sox own a mediocre 3.93 ERA in the second half of the season, while their bullpen has struggled since the All-Star break, tallying a 4.86 ERA and 4.31 FIP.</p>

<p>Dylan Cease will toe the slab Tuesday against the Royals, and he’s 7-6 with a 4.14 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 21 starts this season. The 25-year-old right-hander has struggled through his five starts in July, going 0-3 with a 5.33 ERA.</p>



<p>Last time out, Cease has tossed six frames of a two-run ball against the Royals on the road. In three starts against Kansas City this season (all no-decisions), the righty has yielded only five runs (three earned) on 13 hits and seven walks across 16.1 frames of work.</p>

<p>The hosts will have a difficult task in this one, considering the teams’ recent form. However, I’m expecting the White Sox to break out of their funk sooner rather than later. Their offense has been terrible since the All-Star break and can only do better in August.</p>



<p>The current White Sox are slashing just .199/.226/.287 in 65 at-bats against Kris Bubic, but they own a .258/.330/.427 triple-slash against the left-handed starting pitchers in 2021 (19-10 record). Bubic has had some ups and downs so far this season, and he’s allowed only four earned runs in his last three outings (18 innings), so I’m expecting some regression when he takes on the ChiSox for the second time in six days.</p>

<p><strong>The Total:</strong></p>



<p>If you like to follow the betting trends, go with the under that has hit in the last seven meetings between the Royals and ChiSox. None of those seven contests has produced more than eight runs in total.&nbsp;</p>



<p>I don’t trust Kris Bubic, so the hosts are my top betting pick here. Anyway, the White Sox need to improve on the mound, too, and they have plenty of top-notch arms in their bullpen. I don’t expect the visitors to score more than a few runs, but the hosts could score a bunch if they finally start to hit well.</p>

<p>At 4:10 PM from Chase Field in Phoenix, we have an NL matchup between the Cardinals and Diamondbacks. Heading into Sunday's game, both teams are 7-8 overall. The Diamondbacks are the favorite at -155, and the over/under line is at 8.5 runs.</p>

<p>Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was the difference for the Diamondbacks, as he homered, scored three times, and finished with three RBIs. Ketel Marte also had a two-hit game and scored twice. As for the Cardinals, Masyn Winn went 2/4 with an RBI.</p><h3>Cardinals Records & Stats</h3><p>As the Cardinals are on the road today vs. the Diamondbacks, they are looking to get above .500, as they currently hold a record of 7-8. In the NL Central, they are in 5th place, four games behind the Brewers. So far, they have been just below average both at home (3-3) and on the road (4-5).</p>

Currently, both the Padres and Diamondbacks are 3 games behind the Dodgers for the division lead. In the Diamondbacks' series, they are coming off a win vs the Cardinals.</p>

<p>At home, the Diamondbacks have gone 5-4 this season, compared to 2-4 on the road. Arizona is just above .500 as the favorite this season at 6-3 but have gone just 1-5 as the underdog.</p><p>Arizona has been a solid bet against the run line this season, going 9-6 overall. The Diamondbacks have been especially good at home, going 6-3 against the run line in their own ballpark. They have an average run margin of 2.2 at home, compared to -0.7 on the road. St. Louis Cardinals vs Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Pick & Prediction 4/14/24

The Masters. It takes nothing more than saying the name to get fired up for the first golf major of the season. Augusta National’s iconic grounds will be in full bloom and a smattering of patrons will be on hand for the 2021 version of The Masters. The 2020 version was beautiful in its own way, but nothing beats Augusta in April and spectators munching on cheap pimiento cheese sandwiches.

Odds have been up for The Masters for a long time. Golf majors are posted well in advance to draw a variety of action and to always have something up in the golf section for these sportsbooks. With a rather weak field at the Valero Texas Open, we haven’t seen a whole lot of adjusted prices based on what happened in Texas.

<h3><strong><u>The Odds</u></strong></h3>
Dustin Johnson has a short price of +850 to repeat as champion where he just won by five strokes in November. There wasn’t a whole lot of drama and DJ’s five-shot win was the most since Tiger won by 12 in 1997.

Bryson DeChambeau, whose style of play seems to fit well at Augusta, especially on some of the more difficult driving holes, is +1100 along with resurgent Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

Jon Rahm is a pretty darn good player at +1400 if he can keep his emotions together. Rory McIlroy is +1800 with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele at +2200. Those are the only players under +3000, but it is quite a list of names the rest of the way.

My strategy is usually to find a player or two in that 30/1 to 50/1 corridor and see if I can find some good betting angles on those guys to perform well and have me in contention on Sunday.
<h3><strong><u>Course Profile</u></strong></h3>
What needs to be said about Augusta National that hasn’t already been said? We all know about Rae’s Creek and Amen Corner and Ike’s Pond and all of the other familiar elements of the plant nursery turned golf course. The greens are hard and fast. The pin placements are among the toughest on the PGA Tour.

DJ’s 20-under last year was the highest winning score ever. Pars are good scores on a lot of these holes, but you really need to maximize birdie opportunities. We’ve seen winning scores of 5-under, 1-over, single digits, double digits, it all depends on how the course plays.
<h3><strong><u>The Field</u></strong></h3>
This is a veritable who’s who of golf because only about 100 players get into The Masters every year. Some spots are taken up by guys that play simply because they’ve won before. For the most part, though, the best of the best are on hand. We won’t have Tiger because of injury, but just about every other golfer you can think of will be in this field.

It is how you end up with guys like Corey Conners at 100/1, Matthew Wolff and Matt Kuchar at +12500, and recent winner Max Homa at +13500.

It is a hard golf tournament to win and you have to outlast a lot of elite players to do, but we have seen strange things in the past.

<h3><strong><u>Yay or Neigh?</u></strong></h3>
We’ve got plenty of course form data for The Masters. DJ has finished in the top 10 in five straight starts at Augusta. He missed the 2017 version when he slipped and fell down some stairs, otherwise it could very well be six in a row.

Rory was 21st in 2019, but got back to his top-10 ways in 2020 with a T-5th. Rory had a run of five top-10 finishes upended in 2019, but now simply has six in his last seven starts. His recent form has not been great, but he plays well at Augusta National, as we know.

Rahm has a run of three straight top-10 finishes. Lee Westwood, who has been in outstanding form recently, has had quite a run since 2008. He has two runners-up, a third, seventh, eighth, 11th, and 18th out of those tournaments. He was T-38th last year.

Kuchar suffered his first MC at The Masters ever last year. He has four top-eight finishes and three additional top-25 finishes. Cameron Smith was fifth in 2018 and second, albeit five shots back, last year. Bubba Watson is a two-time winner that was also fifth in 2018 and 12th in 2019 before finishing 57th last year.

Xander Schauffele has been 17th and second in his last two starts. Tony Finau had a couple of top-10 finishes in 2018 and 2019 before a T-38 last year. Hideki Matsuyama has four top-15 finishes in six years.

Justin Thomas has gotten better each year here, finishing 39th, 22nd, 17th, 12th, and then fourth last year.

Yeah, those are a lot of big names.
<h3><strong><u>Recent Form</u></strong></h3>
With an elite field, at least at the top, such as this one, you’ve got a lot of guys that are playing really well in stroke play events. DeChambeau recently won the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Thomas won the PLAYERS. Matt Jones won the Honda Classic. Collin Morikawa won the WGC-Workday Championship.

Paul Casey had back-to-back top-10 finishes in the API and the PLAYERS. Corey Conners did as well and added a top-15 finish last week in Texas for good measure. Matthew Fitzpatrick has three straight top-11 finishes. Jason Kokrak has actually gone 9-8-9 in his last three stroke play events. Lee Westwood had those back-to-back runner-up finishes in the API and the PLAYERS. Will Zalatoris has three straight top-25 finishes.

Lots of these guys are playing really, really well with some big tournaments having been completed in March.
<h3><strong><u>Handicap &amp; Picks</u></strong></h3>
Best tournament of the year to watch and maybe the hardest of the year to bet. Why? Because we have a ton of elite players in the field and any one of them could easily win this tournament.

I do like Paul Casey and Daniel Berger in the 40/1 range. Both guys have played well and are quality ball strikers. Bubba Watson is in decent form at 80/1 and his shot shape plays well at Augusta National. A lot of people do like Fitzpatrick’s game for The Masters at 55/1. He needs to prove he can win a big event first.

I’ll take Casey, Berger, and Bubba preflop and then see how things play out as the tournament goes along.
