Virginia was named as the #9 overall seed in a "sneak peek" on CBS' Bracket Preview Show. The Cavs have some great credentials. They are in the top dozen in both offensive and defensive efficiency, according to the metrics at KenPom.com. This is a team that can shoot among the best whether it is inside (21st) or outside ( 6th) the three-point arc. And they are not shy about shooting triples, as that constitutes 42% of their field goal attempts.

FSU hits threes as well(38.7%), and they are a team that is difficult to deal with on the offensive boards. They have been sloppy with the ball - in fact, when they have stumbled, it has been because they have suddenly gone cold from three-point range, or they have coughed it up to an excessive degree, or both. Examples include 9-for-32 in treys and 17 TO's against Clemson and 3-for-14 with 20 turnovers against Georgia Tech.

Well, Virginia isn't the kind of team that pressures a lot and forces turnovers. Their scheme - the Pack-Line Defense - involves getting back quickly and setting up. Unlike something like a matchup zone, the Cavs are very good at keeping the opposition off the offensive boards (14th in the nation in defensive rebounding percentage)

Virginia defends without fouling, which is very important. And when you are allowing just 46% in two-pointers, you are naturally doing a tremendous job. It is going to be more of a challenge than usual as they face FSU, which has more height per man than any team in the nation. Oddly enough, the Seminoles' best path to victory might be to shoot over the zone, as that is at least something the Cavaliers will let you do.

You can make your best guess as to who would have the critical fundamental advantages here. But the value may lie not in picking the side, but picking the total.

Through the years, when Tony Bennett's Virginia squad has played Leonard Hamilton's FSU contingent, the games have almost always been deliberately-paced and low-scoring.

In the eighteen meetings between the two, the average total points has been 114.7. Most recently, we've seen totals of 104, 117, 117, 128, 114 and 118. The highest total has been 144 (in the 2013-14 season), but that was really an outlier. We have had totals as low as 92 points (twice).

Only three times has the total between Virginia and Florida State exceeded 127.5 points. And on 14 occasions it has been at least eight points below that total.

Tommy Henry (3-4) will get his 9th start of the year when he faces the Brewers on Monday. The 25-year-old left-hander has a weak 5.98 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, and 31/20 K/BB ratio in 40.2 innings.



Brewers lost the series to the Marlins



The Milwaukee Brewers are chasing a wildcard spot, but they still lost the series against lowly Miami Marlins at home. With only three games to go in the regular season, the Brewers now must sweep the D-Backs in this series and hope for good results elsewhere and some losses for San Diego and Philadelphia.



It took 12 innings for the Marlins to beat the Brewers 4-3 in Game 4. Milwaukee was down 2-0 but scored in the 8th and 9th to force extra innings; however, they failed to get a crucial win. Freddy Peralta (4-4) was excellent during 4.0 scoreless innings as he allowed only two hits and had four strikeouts with no walks. Trevor Gott (3-3) took a loss in the end.



Brandon Woodruff (13-4) will take on the mound for the 27th time this year when he meets Arizona on Monday. The 29-year-old right-hander owns a rock-solid 3.05 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 183/41 K/BB ratio across 147.1 innings of work.

Tommy Henry had just two starts in September and allowed five runs in each, and a rookie pitcher is not reliable, but he’s young and will learn a lot this season. Brandon Woodruff, on the other hand, surrendered more than one run only once in his previous five starts. The Brewers are below-average when it comes to batting against southpaws as they average only .220 with 3.93 runs per nine innings. However, they are still in playoff contention and this is a must-win game for Milwaukee, so I am backing them to get it.

The Total



Although Woodruff didn’t play well in his lone start against Arizona this season as he suffered a loss with a 7.94 ERA in 5.2 innings, I am impressed with his recent performances. I don’t think he will allow more than two runs in this one, but I can’t say the same for the rookie Henry, who has been struggling of late. I think the Brewers will score multiple runs off of Henry, but I am still going with a low-scoring affair. Under is 7-1 in the last eight H2H meetings, while Under is 10-4 in the previous 14 H2H duels in Milwaukee.
