Everyone and their brothers have heard the term ERA and for the most part know what it means. But perhaps the novice bettor puts too much stock in that number. This is just more food for thought.

A pitcher's ERA is reflective of his earned runs allowed, but I think it's important to look more at HOW those runs were given up and against who. Early in the season, someones ERA might look superb, but if you look at the competition to-date you might find that he's been on the mound against some fairly weak offenses. The reverse is true in that a starter might have faced the Cubs and the Nationals twice each. So, we have to take that into consideration.

Let's look beyond that. For me, the next two most relevant numbers are WHIP and fly ball to ground ball ratio. WHIP is the total of walks and hits per inning pitched. It will give you and idea as to how many "opportunities" the pitcher usually gives the other team, in layman's terms. It also speaks to <a href="http://bangthebook.com/pitch-counts-important/">pitch count and efficiency</a>, both of which can be far more important than ERA. Anything under 1.20 for a WHIP is something that is hard to bet against. That number simply means the pitcher is allowing 1.2 base runners per inning. Anything over 1.40 is generally where we start looking to take the other team, or that pitcher needs to have a great bullpen behind him.

The fly ball to ground ball ratio is important not only because the pitcher with a low frequency of fly ball outs is far more likely to induce a the rally-killing double play. This can also be very good if a pitcher is starting in Coors Field (Colorado) or Great American (Cincinnati), two very small parks.

The reverse is also true and there is no better example of that than Phil Hughes. He was simply crushed in Yankee Stadium with that short porch in right field. But in Minnesota those are nothing but routine outs. It has become almost standard operating procedure to bet against Hughes and the Twins when the are in an American League park that is small and home-run friendly, like Cleveland, Houston, and Texas so know your <a href="http://bangthebook.com/when-should-you-take-the-under-in-mlb/">MLB Ball Park</a>!

The bottom line here is that if ERA is a big factor in you decision-making process, it might be worth digging just a little deeper. That also goes hand-in-hand with something we talked about a while back, which is knowing why your pitcher with a 2.85 ERA allowed six runs in four innings.

However, Atlanta was able to pull out the win with a 58-yard field goal from Younghoe Koo with 7 seconds left. Koo had a great game, also hitting from 53 and 42 yards earlier in the game. Kirk Cousins and Bijan Robinson connected on a 26-yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter for the Falcons.Quarterback Kirk Cousins led the Falcons' passing attack with 238 yards on 21 completions in their 26-24 win over the Saints. Atlanta's offense managed just 14 first downs and 227 passing yards on 35 attempts. The Falcons struggled to get much going on the ground, with only 88 yards rushing on 15 attempts.Drake London was the leading receiver for Atlanta with 64 yards on six catches. Tyler Allgeier, who ran for 60 yards and averaged 7.5 yards per attempt, was the leading rusher with 60 yards, including a 15-yard run.Atlanta's defense picked off one pass in their 26-24 win over the Saints, holding New Orleans to 77.8% completions. The Falcons allowed 366 yards, with 235 coming through the air. They defended 28 completions and limited the Saints to 4.0 yards per attempt on the ground.On third down, the Falcons allowed the Saints to convert 53.8% of their chances. Atlanta's defense managed just one sack in the game, but they did win the tackles for loss battle by a margin of +2.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs Atlanta Falcons Betting Pick & Prediction 10/3/24

The OHL Classic at Mayakoba may not have the strongest field year in and year out, but find me a better course name than El Camaleon on the PGA Tour calendar. This year’s tournament will be on The Chameleon and will feature a very top-heavy field that includes Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, and Gary Woodland.

You can take those guys if you’d like, but we’re always on the lookout for those bargain bin prices on players with upside.

Here are the value picks for this week’s OHL Classic:

Pat Perez ($7,700) – Coastal courses seem to play well for the older crowd and that includes 42-year-old Pat Perez. Perez skipped last week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open to give himself a week after returning from the Asian swing to get ready for this event. Perez won this tournament two years ago and it has been a bit of a theme to see older players take down this title. Perez is one of eight players on the plus side of 30 to win this event in its 11 years. Perez did have a couple of wayward rounds on the Asian swing, as he fired an 80 in the third round at Sheshan and followed it up with a 74, but he was seventh at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges, so the trip wasn’t a total loss. He’s a past winner here and is quite a ways down the salary board.

Bud Cauley ($7,200) – Bud Cauley was solid for us last week at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open by finishing tied for 10th with a score of 14-under. He struggled in the first round with a 72, but he fired 66-67-65 after that and only had six bogeys over 72 holes. Cauley last played this event in 2017 and missed the cut with a score of 1-under par. Cauley was really strong around the greens last week in Vegas and that is a big help here at Mayakoba. The fairways are rather forgiving, but this tournament is about making up strokes and scrambling around the dance floor, especially if the wind picks up. Cauley should be in good shape for that type of event. He’s only had one really bad round out of his eight so far this season.

Scott Brown ($6,800) – We’re digging really deep this week to find Scott Brown. Brown is 0-for-2 on cuts made this season, but he hasn’t played bad. He’s been 2-under in both events after 72 holes, but just wasn’t able to get above the chopping block. This has been a really good course and event for the 35-year-old. Brown tied for sixth last year at Mayakoba. Two years ago, he tied for 55th at 5-under, but was 6-under through 36 holes. Three years ago, Brown tied for fifth. Four years ago, Brown was in a good position after 54 holes, but shot a 1-over 72 on Sunday to drop to 16th. He’s a tremendous value play this week in a horse for course sense.

Carlos Ortiz ($6,700) – Carlos Ortiz is one of two Mexican graduates of the Web.com Tour to be in the field this week. Ortiz struggled last week at TPC Summerlin, but it’s fair to say that he may have been looking ahead to one of the two events held in Mexico annually on the PGA Tour. Ortiz played exceptionally well at the Sanderson Farms Championship when he finished third. Ortiz was eighth in the alternate event at Corales Puntacana Resort last year and second in the Bahamas. Coastal courses certainly seem to fit his game.

Scott Piercy ($8,000) – Scott Piercy seems to be in form. He’s got back-to-back top-10 finishes at the CJ Cup and the Shriners Open as he looks to make it three in a row down in Mexico. Piercy didn’t play in this event last year, but he finished fourth two years ago at Mayakoba. Piercy fits the mold as an older guy and those are guys that have had a lot of success at this tournament. This isn’t a course that rewards length off the tee as much as other courses. That’s important for Piercy because he’s not a long hitter, but he traditionally plays in the short grasses. He’s a little pricier than our other options, but he’s worthy of a roster spot this week.

Makai Jackson was the leading rusher, averaging 47 yards per carry, and the team scored three touchdowns on the ground and two through the air.Appalachian State's defense will be looking to tighten up against the run after allowing 183 rushing yards in their last game. Despite this, they held East Tennessee State to just 10 points and 305 total yards. In the passing game, the Mountaineers were solid, giving up just 122 yards on 11 completions.<h3>Are The Clemson Tigers Going To Defend Home Field Advantage?</h3>Clemson is looking to bounce back after a tough road loss to Georgia in their season opener. The Tigers, who were +10.5 point underdogs, fell 34-3, resulting in both a straight-up and ATS loss. The game's over/under was set at 49 points, but the teams combined for just 37, resulting in an under. 
After a scoreless first quarter, Georgia took a 6-0 lead heading into halftime. Clemson managed to get on the board with a field goal in the third quarter, but Georgia responded with 14 unanswered points to close out the game.Clemson's offense struggled in their 34-3 loss to Georgia, finishing with just 189 total yards. The Tigers were limited to 47 rushing yards on 22 attempts, forcing them to rely heavily on the passing game. Cade Klubnik completed 62.1% of his passes for 142 yards, with his longest completion going for 44 yards. Klubnik ended the game with a passer rating of 59.84 and one interception.Phil Mafah led the team in rushing with 59 yards on 16 carries, while Antonio Williams was the top receiver with six catches for 76 yards.Clemson's defense will be looking to bounce back after giving up 447 total yards to Georgia in their last game. The Bulldogs found success on the ground, rushing for 169 yards and two touchdowns.
