Phoenix Suns vs Dallas Mavericks Betting Pick & Prediction 11/8/24

The DraftKings salary board is truly something for this week’s John Deere Classic. The field is extremely weak, with only 13 players that have a spot in next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush and only four of the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings. That’s how you get Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa as the most expensive players, with Matthew Wolff, Joaquin Niemann, and Kevin Streelman as the others in the $10,000 price group.

This will be quite a week in golf DFS, that’s for sure. A lot of the top players are playing the Scottish Open to get ready for The Open Championship, so we’re going to have to dig really, really deep to find some good candidates that qualify as value picks.

<strong>Pat Perez ($7,500) – </strong>Even though TPC Deere Run is a par 71 coming in at well over 7,200 yards, big hitters have rarely dotted the leaderboard. Guys like Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson, and Steve Stricker have prevailed here. Why not a guy like Pat Perez? Perez ranks 169th in driving distance, which is anything but nice, but he makes up for it by being in the top 20 in SG: Putting. He’s also top 25 in SG: Around the Green. He’s 69th in driving accuracy, which is pretty nice. If you hit it straight, play from the short grass, and make putts, you can contend at TPC Deere Run. It’s the long hitters that go into the woods or the guys that three-putt a GIR that struggle here. Perez looks like a solid play this week at a very, very reasonable price.

<strong>Sam Ryder ($7,500) – </strong>Another $7,500 price tag makes the list this week with Sam Ryder. Ryder was second here last year and has made three of his last four cuts this season. He hasn’t finished higher than 34th, but he was dealing with an injury earlier in the season. When Ryder has been out there, he’s posted some pretty decent stats, as he ranks in the top 50 in par 4 scoring, par 5 scoring, SG: Approach, SG: Putting, Birdie or Better, and Bogey Avoidance. He’s in the top 100 in driving distance and the top 80 in driving accuracy. In a field with a lot of inconsistent players, Ryder’s stats suggest more consistency than we’ve seen from him in recent weeks and he’s a pretty good play here as far as I’m concerned.

<strong>Sepp Straka ($7,300) – </strong>Speaking of consistency, Sepp Straka hasn’t had a lot of it. But, he’s a guy that has a lot of talent and we’ve seen players like that make a push up the standings here in recent weeks or get more notoriety in their first or second years. Straka is a big hitter, one of the biggest in this tournament, as he ranks 36th in driving distance. He’s just outside the top 100 in accuracy, but a lot of guys are far worse than him in that department. Straka has had problems putting, but he’s 65th in SG: Tee to Green and 46th in SG: Off the Tee. He’s 41st in SG: Approach. These greens are gettable, so hopefully he’ll give himself some makeable birdie putts this week and maybe have a few eagle cracks with that length.

<strong>Johnson Wagner ($7,200) – </strong>A punt with potential this week is Johnson Wagner. Wagner has only made nine of 14 cuts this season, but he played well last week in the 3M Open. Wagner played four rounds under 60 and ranked top 10 in SG: Putting. He’s got three top-25 finishes this year and he has played exceptionally well at TPC Deere Run in the past. Wagner was 16th last year after a missed cut in 2017. From 2014-16, Wagner was seventh, fifth, and fifth. Wagner hasn’t won an event since 2012, but his career wins are at Mayakoba and the Sony Open in Hawaii. Those are events that older guys that don’t hit the ball all that far can win. Wagner is 33rd in driving accuracy and 23rd in SG: Putting this season. That’s a good way to be in the hunt at the John Deere and I’d fully expect him to be up there this week.

<strong>Luke Donald ($7,000) – </strong>Look, I know what you must be saying. Luke Donald has not played well this season at all. The former No. 1’s best days are very much in the past. But, let’s look at the situation here. There is a ton at stake for Donald. If he can somehow be the highest top-five finisher without a berth in The Open Championship, he would get one. He also ranks 181st in FedEx Cup points. He missed the FedEx Cup Playoffs last season. He really needs a big effort in this event. It would be a surprise to see him play the alternate events that are coming up, but he doesn’t have an invite to Royal Portrush and isn’t in the WGC-FedEx St. Jude either. This is the type of course for an old man like Donald to make a run. That’s not to say that he will, but simply to say that turning back the clock might not be as hard as it seems. He hasn’t played this event in at least the last 10 years, so it’s pretty clear how serious he is.

The American League Central Division was won by somebody other than the Cleveland Indians for the first time since 2015. The Minnesota Twins put it all together, won 101 games, and outlasted the Indians, who limped to the finish line with five straight losses to end the season. The eight-win gap between the two teams really wasn’t that big, as Cleveland and Minnesota were actually tied for the top spot as late in the season as August 11. The Twins led by as many as 11.5 games on June 2.

When all was said and done, Minnesota had 101 wins and Cleveland had 93 and that was that. The Indians were the team with the most wins ever to miss the Wild Card Game in its current format dating back to 2012 and the Twins went on to lose to the Yankees.

Perception matters a lot in the betting markets for the AL Central. The Twins got better by adding Josh Donaldson, Kenta Maeda, and several others. The Chicago White Sox got better by signing Yasmani Grandal, Gio Gonzalez, Dallas Keuchel, and by welcoming Luis Robert and eventually guys like Nick Madrigal and Michael Kopech to the fold. The Indians? Well, they signed Cesar Hernandez and Domingo Santana.

To further hurt the Indians in the court of public opinion, Mike Clevinger tore his meniscus and Carlos Carrasco found himself on crutches before the first Spring Training game.

The Twins are the clear favorite to repeat as the AL Central champs. The question is whether or not somebody else has a good enough chance to place a bet.

This will come as a shock to some, but we can effectively cross out the Royals and Tigers.

That leaves us with three contenders. The favored Twins in search of a repeat, the 2016-18 champion Indians, and a team that hasn’t made the playoffs or won the division since 2008. Decisions, decisions.

A line of -147 implies a little less than a 60% chance that the Twins win this division. Quite frankly, that looks low to me. The Indians could very well have the four best players in the division in Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Mike Clevinger, and Shane Bieber, but the supporting cast is lacking. Lindor, Ramirez, Clevinger, and Bieber could all end up in the top-20 in fWAR among position players and pitchers and yet the Indians are still +335. Isn’t that telling enough?

The White Sox have the makings of what could be a stellar offense with Yoan Moncada and Eloy Jimenez and Grandal and Robert, but they don’t have the pitching for a playoff push. The White Sox may make a big leap after last season’s 72-90 showing, but they are not ready to make a push at the division yet.

That leaves bettors with one question – Are the Indians good enough? Even as an Indians fan, I must reluctantly say no. The Twins are the play to win the Central Division here, though it is extremely tough to justify a -147 price tag for a seven-month hold on your money. There isn’t a ton of value here in this division with the odds-on favorite, but an implied probability of 59.5% does look a little bit low for those that just want to play on the value rather than focus on the hold of your money.

Princeton Tigers vs Duquesne Dukes NCAA Basketball Betting Pick & Prediction 11/8/24

The Toyota Center in Houston, Texas will be abuzz this weekend with UFC 247 and a main event of Jon “Bones” Jones vs. Dominick Reyes for the light heavyweight championship. That is the last of 12 fights scheduled for Saturday’s card that also includes a title fight in the women’s flyweight division between Valentina Shevchenko and Katlyn Chookagian.

We’ll be breaking down all 12 fights for you with assistance from the odds at <a href="http://bangthebook.com/sportsbooks/5dimes"><strong>5Dimes</strong> </a>and we’ll be taking a little bit deeper of a look at the five fights that make up the main card. Action can be seen on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+ for the early prelims, ESPN for the primary prelims, and then PPV for the main card.

A few changes have taken place recently with the card. Jimmie Rivera and Marlon Vera was taken off with an injury to Rivera. Also, Dhiego Lima was bumped from the card with injury and his place has been taken by Kalinn Williams against Alex Morono.

We start in the featherweight division with Austin Lingo and Youssef Zalal at 145 pounds. Lingo is a -210 favorite with +175 on the takeback for Zalal. Both fighters are new to the UFC, but they were in LFA together. They never wound up fighting each other, but will get the chance here at UFC 247. Zalal has lost two of his last three fights, while Lingo comes in perfect. We could see a stoppage winner here with five stoppage victories out of seven total wins for each fighter. That may be the way to go when round props open.

Andre Ewell is now a -120 favorite over Jonathan Martinez in the bantamweight division. Ewell is coming off of a loss to Marlon Vera with a third-round knockout in what was a very vicious fight between the two combatants. That was Ewell’s second loss in his last three fights. He is 2-2 in UFC since making the leap from CES. Martinez is 2-1 with back-to-back wins over Liu Pingyuan and Wuliji Buren. Sharper money has spoken in this fight on Ewell, but the better look is over 2.5 when round props open. Ewell has been stopped in those two losses, but both came late in the third round.

Domingo Pilarte is -130 and Journey Newson is +110 as the Fight Pass portion of the card wraps up. Pilarte lost his official UFC debut in July after performing on the Dana White Contender Series nearly a year prior. Newsom also lost his UFC debut to Ricardo Ramos back in June. It has been a bit of a long layoff for these two fights, so cage rust could be a factor. Newsom got caught with a couple spinning elbows in the Ramos loss. It’s fair to wonder if Pilarte has that type of trick in his bag. The underdog may be worthy of a look here.

To ESPN we go for the next part of the prelim card. Miles Johns puts his 10-0-0 record on the line against Mario Bautista. Johns is -140 to stay unblemished. He won his debut fight in the UFC over Cole Smith back in September, but it was in a split decision. Bautista is one up and one down in his UFC career with a loss to Cory Sandhagen and a unanimous decision win over Jin Soo Son. Johns is giving up a little bit of height and reach here and Bautista is the more active striker. The underdog looks interesting here as well, so long as this fight stays upright.

Kalinn Williams faces long odds on short notice against Alex Morono in the welterweight division. Williams is +250 with Morono at -300. Williams has an impressive 9-1 record, but this is a massive step up in class to take on a very experienced UFC opponent. Morono is actually in a nice groove with three straight wins. Keep Morono in mind as a parlay piece.

The ladies take center stage for the first time as Andrea Lee lays a big -340 price against Lauren Murphy. Murphy’s +280 may not be high enough to consider the underdog here. Murphy came off of the shelf after 14 months off to knock out Mara Romero Borella, but she is definitely taking a big step up in class here and Lee needs a bounce back effort after the loss to Joanne Calderwood. Lee and Morono are two good open parlay pieces to put together and keep in mind for the round props.

Antonio Arroyo is +110 with Trevin Giles -130 on the comeback with the last fight before the main card. Arroyo was a two-time fighter on Dana White’s Contender Series before getting his shot on an official UFC card against Andre Muniz. He lost that fight by unanimous decision. Now he gets another crack, but with Giles, who has lost two straight fights, but would seem to be an upgrade. Giles has lost both fights by submission, so he needs a lot of work with his takedown defense, but he also fought more experienced guys in Zak Cummings and Gerald Meerschaert. Arroyo isn’t as experienced. That should give Giles a better chance.

<strong>Ilir Latifi (+205) vs. Derrick Lewis (-245)</strong>

Let’s see how this goes for Ilir Latifi. The Stockholm native is making the move up to heavyweight at age 36. The weight cut had to be tough for him, so now he’ll try his fortunes as one of the shortest heavyweights in the division at 5-foot-10. We can throw out most everything that Latifi has done to this point as he steps up a weight class to face Derrick Lewis.

Lewis has a massive size advantage here of over 30 pounds, five inches, and a whole lot of reach. This is a bad first matchup for Latifi, unless he can find a way to take Lewis to the ground. His quicks probably aren’t what they used to be, though, at age 36. If this stays on the feet, it is Lewis’s fight to lose and that seems highly unlikely.

<strong>Pick: Derrick Lewis</strong>

<strong>Dan Ige (+115) vs. Mirsad Bektic (-135)</strong>

Dan Ige comes into this fight against Mirsad Bektic with a four-fight winning streak. Ige has beaten Kevin Aguilar, Danny Henry, Jordan Griffin, and Mike Santiago. Bektic has split his last four fights down the middle and lost his only fight in 2019 to Josh Emmett by first-round knockout. This is a tough fight because Ige is the guy trending up, but Bektic is likely the better fighter overall, despite what his most recent fight would suggest.

Ige would like this fight to stay upright. Bektic’s biggest advantage could be taking this thing down to the ground to get top control and grind out a decision victory. Ige has been the more active fighter lately with five fights since the start of 2018. Bektic hasn’t been fighting as much and it does seem like Ige has made some changes to his game to be more dangerous than he previously was. The dog intrigues me here.

<strong>Pick: Dan Ige</strong>

<strong>Justin Tafa (+205) vs. Juan Adams (-245)</strong>

This isn’t the best card that UFC has put out. Here is another heavyweight fight with a pretty big number between Justin Tafa and Juan Adams. Tafa lost his UFC debut in the first round to fellow debutant Yorgan De Castro, who does look like a decent prospect and will draw Greg Hardy on March 28 in Columbus.

Juan Adams’s time in the UFC hasn’t gone well either. He did win his first fight over Chris de la Rocha, but lost in unanimous decision to Arjan Bhullar and then got pummeled by Greg Hardy. Adams is still a big favorite here over Tafa with a little bit more UFC experience and a huge size advantage of five inches and quite a bit of reach. It has to be Adams here. Size advantages are a lot to overlook in the heavyweight division since it is so dependent on striking ability.

<strong>Pick: Juan Adams</strong>

<strong>Katlyn Chookagian (+700) vs. Valentina Shevchenko (-1100)</strong>

Not much needs to be said here. They are trying to do whatever they can to find a contender to go up against Valentina Shevchenko in the women’s flyweight division and they just can’t. Katlyn Chookagian won by unanimous decision twice in 2019, but she just isn’t a versatile enough fighter to beat Shevchenko. She’s primarily a striker and those can be dangerous for champions, not to mention Chookagian’s size advantage.

The thing is that Chookagian just doesn’t have enough power. She only has two knockouts in 13 career wins. That won’t get it done. She needs to knock Shevchenko out because she’s highly unlikely to win a decision. That just won’t happen.

<strong>Pick: Valentina Shevchenko</strong>

<strong>Dominick Reyes (+335) vs. Jon Jones (-420)</strong>

Is Jon “Bones” Jones on the verge of getting upset? He beat Anthony Smith by unanimous decision and then topped Thiago Santos by split decision. Now he fights unbeaten Dominick Reyes. Jones is more focused on trying to fight Stipe Miocic in hopes of following in Daniel Cormier’s footsteps. Is he going to take Reyes seriously in this fight? Does Reyes have enough to knock off Jones?

Only one guy has done that and it was Matt Hamill at the TUF 10 finale. Jones lost that fight by DQ. Nobody has ever actually beaten Jones. He beat Daniel Cormier, but popped a positive test and the fight was overturned. He even lost two points for an illegal knee in that fight against Smith and still won in unanimous fashion.

Reyes has fought a lot of the best guys that this division has to offer. He’s beaten Chris Weidman, Volkan Oezdemir, Ovince Saint Preux, and Jared Cannonier. The most recent performance for Jones was a dud. He was booed by the fans and didn’t show a whole lot of initiative.

There is a non-zero chance that Reyes pulls off the stunner here. He’s the best fighter Jones has faced in quite some time. As long as Jones is focused, though, he’s just too good for just about anybody else on the planet.

<p>In addition to Shelton, Tiafoe, and Giron, Americans Brandon Naksahima and Michael Mmoh are also into the quarter-finals. Nakashima scored straight set victories over Duje Ajdukovic and Rinky Hijakta, while Mmoh, a wildcard entry, beat JP Varillas and Max Purcell in straight sets. The other three quarter-finalists are Darderi, Jordan Thompson, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry.</p>

Nakashima, meanwhile, has lost just 10 games through two matches in Houston and looks to be a good upset pick.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Like Shelton, Tiafoe hasn't exactly had a dream start to the 2024 season, but if there's ever a chance for him to turn his fortunes around it's in Houston, where he is the defending champion. Tiafoe is 8-7 this season and went 16-10 on clay courts during the last two seasons, while Thompson is just 6-15 on clay over the last four years. They've split their two prior meetings, with Thompson winning the most recent meeting in 2019, but expect Tiafoe to win Friday on clay courts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-finals-prediction">Finals Prediction</h2>



<p>With five Americans in the quarter-finals, there's a strong possibility of an all-American final in Houston. Shelton may be the top seed, but his performance as of late doesn't exactly inspire much confidence. The path is clear for Tiafoe, who would have a favorable semi-final match-up as well if he can beat Thompson in the quarters.</p>
