Chicago White Sox vs New York Mets Betting Pick & Prediction 7/18/23

The Desert Classic has changed names quite a bit, but the simpler name in 2019 pays homage to the original Palm Springs Desert Classic all the way back in 1960. This is the 60th anniversary of the event that used to bear Bob Hope’s name and was most recently known as the CareerBuilder Challenge.

We’ll be looking at a rather large field here for a very unique tournament. The cut is after 54 holes for this one and three different courses are played. The PGA West Stadium Course is used for Sunday’s final round and players participate on the Stadium Course, Tournament Course, and the course at La Quinta Country Club over the first 54 holes.

Our goal, as always, is to find the top value prices for golfers to put together strong tournaments and be the difference in those GPPs, H2Hs, and 50/50s.

<strong>CT Pan ($8,400) – </strong>In my tournament preview at BangTheBook.com, I mentioned a lot of players that finished up well in 2018 or played well in the Asian swing in the fall. Those players tend to have value because they have been replaced by guys who have played more recently. CT Pan is one of those guys that has been replaced. Pan finished 30th, 23rd, 22nd, and 16th in the fall swing before missing the cut at the RSM Classic. Pan was second in the Wyndham Championship last year at fourth in the Dell Technologies Championship. He finished 35th in FedEx Cup points. Don’t sleep on a guy like him early in the year.

<strong>Beau Hossler ($8,000) – </strong>This is one of my favorite plays of the weekend. Beau Hossler played a ton of golf late last season and it was pretty clear during the fall swing that he was a little bit gassed. Hossler hasn’t been seen since the OHL Classic and he missed the cut there. The 26-year-old had five top-10 finishes last year and finished sixth in strokes gained putting and top 50 in strokes gained overall and strokes gained off the tee. He took major strides forward after missing the top 10 in all of his events in 2017. Hossler played well en route to finishing 20th last year with a 64-69-73-68 tournament.

<strong>Chesson Hadley ($7,600) – </strong>Hopefully Chesson Hadley can knock off the rust in short order. We haven’t seen Hadley since he missed the cut at the RSM Classic, but he finished seventh at TPC Summerlin and second in Kuala Lumpur at the CIMB Classic. Hadley played pretty well early in the season last year with a third at the Safeway Open and a second at the Sanderson Farms. So far, he’s off to another good start. Hadley had seven top-10 finishes last year after not having any in 2017 or 2016. He was 30th in strokes gained last season and comes in at a very reasonable price this week.

<strong>Jason Dufner ($7,400) – </strong>Jason Dufner likes playing at this event. He won it in 2016 and has played extremely well on the PGA West Stadium Course. Dufner shot 67 in the final round in both 2015 and 2016 and shot 68 in the final round in both 2017 and 2018. That means that he’s a guy that can make up some ground for us on Sunday, assuming he makes it through the 54-hole cut. We’re getting a cheap price here because of how poorly he played in Hawaii last week, but he did get to fly out early for California.

<strong>Joaquin Niemann ($7,600) – </strong>It wasn’t that long ago that Joaquin Niemann was priced among golf’s best, both in the DFS world and the betting world. It seems like the youngster has been forgotten. Niemann had a brilliant 2018 year, but he ran out of gas late in the season with the rigors of playing week after week. He hasn’t played in two months now, so it’s a good time to back him. The 20-year-old had four top-10 finishes and six top-25 finishes. He’s off to a slow start as a full PGA Tour member, but a lot of that had to do with fatigue late last year. He’s going to get that first win sooner rather than later.

<p>Fresno State dropped a 74-56 decision to the Roadrunners on Saturday, November 16th. The Bulldogs were +1 underdogs going in and didn’t cover the spread. The game’s total points of 130 fell short of the O/U line of 150.</p> 

<p>Fresno State trailed 38-33 at halftime but struggled in the 2nd half, scoring just 23 points while allowing 36.</p><p>Fresno State's offense struggled in their last game, scoring just 56 points with a field goal percentage of 37.5%. Their effective field goal percentage was 39.3%, and they hit only 2 of 16 three-point attempts, shooting 12.5% from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also connected on 63.2% of their free throws, going 12 for 19 from the line.</p> <p>Corey Stephenson led the way with 17 points and 9 rebounds, shooting 53.8% from the field. Jemel Jones added 13 points in just 12 minutes, despite missing all 4 of his three-point attempts. Fresno State finished with only 5 assists and 7 offensive rebounds in the game.</p><p>Fresno State's defense gave up 74 points in their last game, with their opponent shooting 46% from the field, hitting 30 of 65 shots. Maybe the Cup Series drivers are waiting to use all seven of their allotted Xfinity Series spots at once? I’m not sure, but we have a field of nearly all points eligible drivers this week for the LTi Printing 250 at Michigan International Speedway. The Cup Series guys weren’t allowed to participate in the Dash 4 Cash races and we haven’t seen much of them in the other races either.

Paul Menard is the only one this week as the drivers get ready for the 13th race of the regular season. We popped the winner last week with Cole Custer at Pocono and we’ll look to do the same here.

<h5><strong>How They Stand</strong></h5>
We took a good, long look at the standings on the Cup Series side in advance of the FireKeepers Casino 400 and will do the same here. Tyler Reddick ripped off his ninth straight top-five finish last week at Pocono and has a commanding points lead with 572. Christopher Bell has three wins to Reddick’s two, but he is nearly 80 points behind with 495. Cole Custer’s third win of the season bumped him up to 473 points. Austin Cindric has 455 and Justin Allgaier, who won the second stage last week as our other pick, has 439.

Rookies Chase Briscoe, John Hunter Nemechek, and Noah Gragson sit sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. Michael Annett and rookie Justin Haley round out the top 10. Annett is the only driver outside of the top three with a win this season. He won the first race at Daytona.

If the playoffs started today, Ryan Sieg and Brandon Jones would grab the final two spots. Jones finished third and fourth in the first two races of the year, but has not finished in the top five since.

<h5><strong>A Different Look</strong></h5>
My surprise was evident in the intro regarding the number of Cup Series drivers in the field. Denny Hamlin won this race back in 2017 and Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Paul Menard, and Austin Dillon all finished in the top 10. Dillon won it last year, with Menard fifth, Busch sixth, and Harvick eighth. Those are some heavy hitters for an Xfinity Series race. Menard is the only one this year.

Even with Cup Series guys in the race last year and the year prior, points drivers still finished second and third both years and rounded out the top five after Dillon last year.

This is a big track. Only Daytona, Talladega, Sonoma, and Indianapolis are bigger. That means that this race is more about equipment than anything else. Driver skill is mitigated a little, especially at this level. That’s what makes it a little surprising that the Cup guys didn’t do better, but it also speaks to how the playing field is leveled a little bit.

<h5><strong>Toyota</strong><strong>, Ford, or Chevy?</strong></h5>
Toyota drivers have won six of the 12 races so far. The three wins for Ford have all come via Custer. The three wins for Chevy have come via Annett and Reddick. Toyota moved from the Camry to the Supra this year at the Xfinity Series level and the returns were pretty good in the early going. Toyota has only won one of the last five races.

It does seem like the playing field is a little bit leveler this year. Chevy has made some big Cup Series strides and Reddick has had the best car or the second-best car just about every time out. After some Toyota dominance in recent years, the gap appears to be closing or maybe has closed altogether.

The reason why this is worth examining is that Toyota has three of the last four wins here in this race. Who knows what would have happened last year, but Dillon won a rain-shortened race that went 91 laps. Busch led the most laps and won the first stage, but fellow Chevy Elliott Sadler did win the second stage before finishing 30th.

Toyota is hard to bet against in this race, but Chevy and Ford have made quite a push.

<h5><strong>Track Form</strong></h5>
The top finisher in the race from last year is Custer, who finished third. Menard finished fifth. The next highest finisher was Reddick in seventh. The highest returning finisher from 2017 is Jones, who was ninth. With an almost all-Xfinity Series field this time around, we’ll have some guys setting some new benchmarks at Michigan.

As mentioned, the track hasn’t really mattered much for Reddick with two wins, three seconds, two thirds, and two fourths in his last nine races. Bell had a tough run at Richmond and finished 31st with a good car at Charlotte, but he’s a threat everywhere, especially with less of a Cup Series presence. Custer has been more inconsistent, but he’s had the pole position five times and has those three wins. He also won on the big two-mile track at Auto Club Speedway. Two of Bell’s wins are on the smaller tracks.

Chase Briscoe has six top-five finishes in his last eight races. He hasn’t shown the speed of Custer with his Ford Mustang, but he’s had some strong efforts. With a big track and less emphasis on the driver, maybe this is the week for the rookie to find his way. The +3350 balloon price is certainly intriguing.

<h5><strong>Picks</strong></h5>
Because this event is all about speed, Reddick makes a ton of sense with such an outstanding car. The problem is that Bell and Custer make a lot of sense as well and those are the three shortest prices. I really don’t think we get a long shot to the window here. Briscoe is worth some fun money, but one of the three lowest prices seems poised to take this one down. Reddick was the fastest in qualifying at Auto Club, which could give him a leg up on the field, at least to start. Custer has been the best all-around qualifier, with Bell right behind him.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the three this week. I’ll go with Bell because of how well Toyotas have run here, but won’t be shocked if Reddick or Custer win. I will be shocked if something other than those three win.
