Alabama Crimson Tide: The defending champs of the college football betting world are going to have a huge bulls-eye on their backs this year, as the Crimson Tide look to roll over their competition yet again. All of the main cogs to the offense are returning, most notably Heisman Trophy winning RB Mark Ingram. The same can’t be said for the defense, but HC Nick Saban has done a fantastic job on the recruiting trail in recent years bringing some top talent to Tuscaloosa. Alabama should be the SEC West champs once again at bare minimum.
Arkansas Razorbacks: With road games at Florida, Alabama, and LSU last season, the Hogs never really had much of a chance to get started. This year, the Tide and Bayou Bengals are coming to Fayetteville, while the Gators don’t show up on the slate. Parlay all of that with the return of Heisman hopeful QB Ryan Mallett, and the opportunity is there for HC Bobby Petrino to make himself a hero for the Razorbacks in ’10.
Auburn Tigers: The first year of the HC Gene Chizik era went without a hitch last year, as the Tigers found their way to Outback Bowl as a high bowl selection from the SEC. The offense is going to need a bit of an overhaul with both QB Chris Todd and RB Ben Tate graduating, but there are plenty of weapons left to try to come somewhere near duplicating last season’s 33.3 points per game average. If not, Auburn could struggle, as its defense is coming off of a season in which it allowed 27.5 points per game.
LSU Tigers: HC Les Miles certainly has his work cut out for him with the Bayou Bengals in 2010. His offense was a train wreck last season with both QB Jordon Jefferson and Jarrett Lee calling the shots. Neither one seems capable of leading a solid attack, which will put a ton of pressure on the defense to stop some of the best offenses in the country. Trips to North Carolina, Florida, Auburn, and Arkansas are going to be horrendous, as will visits from West Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama. Could LSU really be left home from a bowl game? We don’t think it’ll be quite that bad, but it might not be pretty, either.
Mississippi Rebels: Any time you have to replace a starting quarterback, running back, and wide receiver, your offense is certainly going to go through growing pains. If there’s a man that can fix all of that in a hurry though, HC Houston Nutt is the one you want in charge. The brutal problem for Ole Miss this year is its road games; trips to Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, and LSU are all but certain defeats, and though the Gators are dodged on the slate, finishing .500 would be a major, major accomplishment.
Mississippi State Bulldogs: Even though the Bulldogs went 3-5 last year in conference play, we aren’t so sure they can figure out how to duplicate that this year. They are almost certainly dead in the water at LSU, Florida, and Alabama this year, especially without RB Anthony Dixon there to tote the rock. Dixon accounted for over a third of the MSU offense in 2009, and without him in the Bulldog backfield, there are going to be plenty of questions for QB Chris Relf to answer.
