Florida State Seminoles: It wasn’t that many years ago that the garnet and gold dominated the ACC. Could the good times be here again in the first year of the HC Jimbo Fisher era? Things sure look to be going FSU’s way at least on paper this year. Yes, a visit to Miami and a trip in from Clemson won’t be fun, but the Noles might have the best offense in the conference under the direction of QB Christian Ponder, a Heisman Trophy hopeful. The questions are all going to stem around a defense which had a triple digit rating for the first time seemingly in forever for a program that was built around its ‘D’ in years past.
Clemson Tigers: The Tigers have to be breathing a sigh of relief that QB Kyle Parker is electing to stay in school and play quarterback for them as opposed to joining the MLB, where he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies this past year. Still, Clemson wasn’t a bona fade fantastic team last year in the ACC and will be struggling just a tad without RB CJ Spiller to get the pigskin to in every imaginable way. Is this a letdown year for the Tigers? It’s possible, but this is clearly the weaker side of the ACC to be playing in.
Boston College Eagles: If RB Montel Harris runs himself into the ground this year, the Eagles could be in some trouble. If he holds up, they could win the ACC. The back rushed for over 1,400 yards a year ago, making him the top rusher in the conference. The schedule sets up favorable for BC as well, as the worst games are seemingly at home against V-Tech and Clemson. Only the trip to Tallahassee is worrisome, but even still, a 5-3 record in the ACC would be acceptable. Going 6-2 should challenge for the Atlantic crown.
North Carolina State Wolfpack: The good news for the Wolfpack is that they have one of the best quarterbacks in the conference in the form of QB Russell Wilson. The bad news is that he doesn’t have a heck of a lot of help around him. The worse news is that Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina all show up on the Coastal side of this schedule. NCSU only went 2-6 in conference last year. It might not be a much better showing in ’10.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons: Last season saw one of the greatest classes in Wake Forest’s football history graduate. The Deacons are going to have to start anew at the quarterback position, where four year starter Riley Skinner is now a thing of the past. There aren’t any tremendous options to replace any of the departing starters, as recruiting classes in recent years have been relatively poor. Needless to say, this is a rebuilding year in Winston-Salem, and a bowl bid would be a bit of a miracle.
Maryland Terrapins: The Turtles may as well just crawl into their shells for the season right now. If not for how bad Virginia was, Maryland might be the most embarrassing BCS school in the country. The Terrapins have a ton of holes all over the place, particularly on defense where they ranked 100th in the nation last year in scoring at 31.2 PPG. An offense that ranked 102nd overall at 315.5 YPG isn’t much to write home about either.
