7/30 - Brett Favre said he was retiring in March but filed for reinstatement with the NFL on Tuesday. He is awaiting approval from commissioner Roger Goodell, which could come as early as Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Angels pulled off a blockbuster deal Tuesday to acquire Teixeira from the fading Braves, bolstering a team that already has the best record in baseball but won’t be satisfied with anything less than a World Series title. Los Angeles sent first baseman Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steve Marek to the Braves, who raised the white flag on this season after a rash of key injuries.

7/29 - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell personally informed Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch on Monday that he won’t be disciplined by the league for a hit-and-run accident that left a woman injured.
If it wasn’t for the daily twists and turns of the Brett Favre unretirement saga, this would be considered a really big deal: Ryan Grant does not have a contract in place and skipped the first practice of Green Bay Packers training camp Monday.

7/25 - Fifteen players and both managers were ejected -- and a fan was sent to the hospital -- following a 10-minute, benches-clearing brawl in a Class-A minor league game between affiliates of the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.The fan was taken to the hospital after being hit by a ball thrown by Peoria (Cubs) pitcher Julio Castillo, who was throwing at the Dayton (Reds) dugout but missed during the first-inning melee between Midwest League teams. 7/23 - 42 year old Greg Maddux has never gone so long without a win. He hasn’t won since May 10, going 14 starts without a victory. He was thwarted again on Wednesday with an assist by the Padres’ defense and bullpen.
